Village Lock & Key - Broken, Cheap set they replaced with ease - Keys & Locksmiths Near Me - Poway, California

On 9-21-23, I decided to go to Village Lock & Key to support a local business. I had a minor issue involving 1 of 3 identical locks for my work cabinet. I had lost the original key and had another locksmith 20 miles away make new keys since I was in that particular area. When I entered Village Lock & Key, I greeted the worker who didn't appear to be too motivated (he didn't return my greeting & was a little slow getting up from his desk). I explained the problem that I had with the lock & key, which was identical to 2 other locks on the same work cabinet. I made an attempt to show him the lock & key, however the worker appeared disinterested (A bit hesitant in approaching the front counter). He finally & reluctantly examined the lock & key and proceeded to tell me he couldn't help me because I didn't have the right key. I explained that the same key was for all 3 locks and the key opened the two other locks but that there was something wrong with the 3rd lock which I had brought in. The worker insisted that the problem was with the key and not the lock. He reiterated that I didn't have the correct key and said that the original person who made the key did not do a good job. I left Village Lock & Key frustrated, NOT with the minor issue involving the lock but with the overall customer experience. I decided to drive an extra 20 miles to revisit the original locksmith (Grah Safe & Lock) who had made new keys for my cabinet. After showing the friendly & attentive worker my lock & key, I was told the problem would be resolved in a couple hours. Turns out there was a very minor problem with the actual lock, NOT the key. A big plus: Since I had originally purchased keys from them, Grah Safe & Lock would NOT charge me for repairing the lock. Now THAT'S what I call customer service. These guys are absolutely amazing. They are professional and ponctual. I called on Monday and set up an an appointment. Todd (who's basically a lock installation wizard) was able to correct errors made by the original lock installers, get our commercial/key card lock installed, tested and then left. Needed a copy of a key made, as they started making the first key I asked them to wait because I need to make sure I have enough cash since I just noticed the sign $10 minimum for a credit card. I asked what the price was and I thought I heard .75 per, so I said ok, I know I should have enough for 1 key, but hold on please, let me check my car. I find out I only have a $1 in change, I run back and tell him I only have enough for one, I look on the counter and there are 2 keys. Then the total is 5.75, I told the guy, I thought it was .75 obviously I misheard him and he also didn't hear me say wait even though he nodded. I end up buying some extra keys to get to $10. What's sad is that there was a Home Depot closer to my work, but I wanted to support a small business. Now after this experience I'll be going to Home Depot. I didn't need $10 worth of the same key and they also didn't listen when I asked them to wait. read more

Let's just say I had the worst Monday in the history of Monday's . The topper was I left my keys at my office mailbox and drove all the way home without them( I left my car running when I checked the mail) I got home and was locked out of my house and had no way to go back because my car wouldn't start. I called Todd and he was at my house within 30 minutes. Got me inside and then re keyed 3 locks for me in about 45 minutes. He was friendly , professional, quick and reasonably priced. I thought I lost a set of keys so I came to Village Lock and Key for copies. This was a very quick process and they were able to copy a wide variety of keys including mailbox, home, car, and even my car's "The Club" key. Prices are a little higher than Wal Mart but this was sooo easy and quick. I'll come back, that's for sure. Oh, and when I came home this evening I found those "lost" keys... I flew in from Washington DC with a brand new luggage and the combo code didn't work. The first thing that came to mind was a locksmith. Locksmiths that should be an expert on all kinds of locks right? Well, I called this shop and was told that there's no absolute way it can be opened. They suggested to just break it! What! Break a brand new luggage! Wrong! I took my luggage to Anthony's Shoe and Luggage Repair, and Voila- they figured out the code and had my luggage opened! We had a broken door knob and several locks that require re-keying. I was referred to Village Lock & Key from a local locksmith who couldn't make it out. Great advice. We quickly went to the location in Poway, had our locks re-keyed and a small repair. Service was done very quickly, professional and the location is great. When you get peer referrals you know you're good. The shop has a tremendous inventory and if you need something they have it. Another nice feature is that Village Lock & Key is open on Saturdays unlike many locksmiths and has a physical location to drop stuff off at. The location is great, it's in a convenient mall, well lit and there is seating inside to wait while you need work done. If you need to get groceries or other tasks, they're within walking distance. They cost slightly more, which is the 4 star justification, but that's the price of convenience for a brick and mortar location and the weekend hours that are offered. We will be back for other services and trust that Village will do them equally as well. read more

I tried this place a few years ago. For nearly a week straight their online hours showed open, but no one was ever there. Two years later in desperate need of locksmith help I headed there once again, as their online hours say open. On my way I figured due to prior experience I better call. The man that answered said he was leaving offering no return time. Online hours are not accurate. I wouldn't recommend wasting your time with this place. Called these guys and the gentleman on the phone was very rude because we didn't buy the key from him. Not only was he rude but he displayed little common sense 1. I sent an email inquiry and received a response in less than an hour, with complete details and pricing for each individual item. I then called and scheduled the appt for the next day. They arrived on time within the 1 hour window, had all necessary parts, gave me my final price over the phone (my boyfriend was home and I was at work), and allowed me to pay over the phone with a credit card. Wonderful Service. Called them at 2pm and had 10 locks re-keyed by 5:30 the same day! Todd (i may have forgotten his name) was fantastic. He whipped through the house and identified locks I didn't even realize I would need keys for...granted this is his job, but he could have easily given a rat's ass about what I didn't ask for and just filled out his work order and left, only to have me call back later realizing I forgot a ton of locks needing to be keyed. On Sunday night my husband and I returned from Mexico. We were so excited to be home and see our kids, I accidentally left my purse and carry-on in the car. That night someone broke into my car and stole everything including keys to both cars and our house. I called Todd on Monday morning and he came out immediately and re-keyed our entire house. Brought a lock for my screen door. They couldn't re-key it so they sold me a replacement for $80.00 that didn't work. They are a professional locksmith so they know what they are talking about. I brought the original to another Locksmith and they re-keyed it. I brought the replacement back and showed them how the other locksmith was able to re-key the original, but they wouldn't take back the replacement because it was a special order. So I'm out $80.00 because they are a professional Locksmith and do not know what they are doing. I even told them I would leave a bad review in Yelp, but they didn't care. read more

Since I posted my review of Village Lock and Key, they have attempted to reconcile what I perceived to be as 'poor service.' I have increased the star rating since VL&K has tried to make their service better. For an establishment to initiate contact speaks volumes about whether or not they care, and I think VL&K is trying to make it right, which shows their commitment to customer service. For this, I am very pleased, and may consider doing business with them again ( I may eat my words from my original review). Perhaps I was just a one-off case. Give them a chance. read more

On Saturday 10/29/11, I called to find out if they could cut and encode keys with special chips for my daughter's car. They confirmed. I purchased 2 Chrysler Sebring keys here (special due to chip in key) for my daughter and they keyed 2 additional. They had me go to the dealer to get the PIN code to enable them to do the chip programming. Unfortunately they thought they had the right software version to encode the "chipped" but they did not figure that out until AFTER they cut the keys... net net... cost me 120$ to buy 2 and cut all 4 total.... So I still had to bring them to go back to the dealer to get the chip programmed. read more

Had my house rekeyed after moving in. A few locks didn't match so we put new ones in. He noticed a few latches were failing so those were replaced too. Once it came time to do the job, he was very fast but ran into troubles with my front door. It seems my door handle was secured by only the bottom bolt! He quickly installed the new handle set and found that the holes that the lock fits through weren't in the correct location OR straight. The magician was still able to make it work. Also had to drill a hole for the lock cylinder in my wooden framed glass sliding door. He ended up doing much more work than expected but the additional charge was minimal. Very fair prices for a quick, harmless, and easy transaction. Nice to know I have a 'lock guy' now. read more

Went back a second time today after the 3 keys copies he made at shop the first time didn't work and STILL doesn't work again. Even with the first error, no offer to compensate me for my inconvenience to go back and to have go back a second time to find out copies won't even fit in the lock! I'm not sure the owner is aware the employee doesn't know how to make key copies. Also I had to pay cash for the keys. Their old location and staff was great! read more

My daughter was locked out of our house when her key broke in the lock. I called, left my office and they met me at the house as soon as I arrived home... within 20 minutes from my initial call. First time using their service. They charged $55 to cut my Honda key without telling me upfront that it won't work after the cut and will still need to be programmed. Proceeded and charged the $$ then told me "we only guarantee that it turns, another $80+ to program it". While I understand that it costs to replace these keys and I should have researched more to know about this myself, I hate to see this kind of services when they just don't want to tell you things upfront until it's done... halfway and tell you that it costs $$ extra to do this & that... read more

Called the Scottish Locksmith and he notified me he retired and sold the business to Village Lock and Key. One of our locks broke and required removed and replaced. I contacted Village and was notified the cost would be for overtime given it was a Saturday which is understandable. I was not home when he arrived, but he arrived on time and replaced the lock that was broken. When I arrived home, he had already left. What I first noticed was the newly painted white door had greasy handprints all over it. The door was also cracked where the lock meets the door jam. This is where he had to break out the old frozen lock. Then to top it off, I discovered broken metal pieces all over the ground in the house and in the garage. He just left it for the customer to clean up. You would think that paying a service provider a few hundred dollars for 30 minutes work they would at least clean up and show some level of consideration. So, I give a rating of two. read more

So by now, I should just get AAA considering I keep calling locksmiths for help. I was cleaning out my car and I guess I misplaced my car keys. My only spare was inside my car and for a quick second I thought I might have left my regular keys in the trunk or something. Well I did a quick yelp and came upon these guys. Within 30 minutes they came and I got my doors unlocked. They there very fast and very professional. In the end, I got my spare keys inside my car and found my regular keys an hour later under my bass guitar speakers in my room! I have been putting off getting new locks and re-keying my house because I thought it was going to be a hassle. Boy was i wrong, I am sure it is because I used Village Lock & Key, they made it painless experience. I initially had called to get a quote and found that they were helpful, knowledgeable and took the time to ask clarifying questions. Which helped save me time and frustration, as I would not have been able to get all my doors with one master key. I have an older home, with older doors and locks, along with some new doors and lock which complicated the process. There was only a 30-minute time window (nice!) and to top it off they arrived a bit early! Again I experienced the same type of customer experience, helpful, knowledgeable and asked questions to ensure that I understood my options. He had all parts and tools needed for the installation, re-keying and cutting of new keys. All in all I am happy with their work , would use them again and would definitely refer a friend to them.
