Pancakes

Big Bro and I had a great early morning brekkie here at Village Inn on L St. I had the Denver Omelette with hash browns and English muffin. The omelette was perfectly cooked, no runny, raw egg in the middle as so often happens. The filling was generous and it enough for me to make two meals. The hash browns were also perfect--not overly oil laden which also happens a lot. Bro had his eggs over hard and the two pork chops were tender, not dry. The side of pancakes was huge and you can never go wrong with VI pancakes. Since we were the first diners of the day, service was very quick. Shelley, our server, was all smiles and very friendly. Bro is a regular here, but I am not. I might have to change that.

I love this village inn! I was in on a Sunday evening and I had never been there for dinner. We had a sweet server named Patty and she was the nicest. I didn't know what to order and she recommended s couple things and I ended up getting the double burger. It was delicious and tall! My onion rings were crispy. My mom also ordered a cheese burger and the fries were delicious! Our server was prompt, kind and honestly had us laughing a couple times. I never really consider village inn to be over the top but she made it a comfortable experience. It was pretty slow, granted it was a Sunday evening. It was quiet even though there were at-least 7 other tables near us. They had the place decorated for Valentine's Day as well! It looked super cute!

They say people are more likely to share a negative experience than a positive one. Well, not today Bucko. My local Village Inn is outstanding! Excellent service, consistently good food, reasonable prices, a manager that actually walks the floor and checks on customers, and a clean environment.

Chedda and fresh jalapeños. Yum!

DP ordered Lemon Berry Pancakes, a plate-filing short stack of goodness. I'd like to say it tasted as good as it looked, but I couldn't tell as DP chowed down like a hound from hell. In a good way, of course. She did allow me to share her Maple Braised Bacon (meaning that I was able to snatch a piece while she wasn't looking). Really, really fine, something I'd definitely order again. For me. Not to share. I had the Schnitzel Bennie with tart cherry jam and lemon hollandaise. Sound unusual? Tasted great! My only gripe was that the pork cutlet was a bit small and could have used a bit more seasoning in the breading. Would I order it again? You betcha! Service was fast and efficient. The decor was quirky and inviting but the space was loud enough that it was really hard to carry a conversation. Overall rating: yahoo!

We said first available seats, which ended up being at the end of the bar. More about that later... I ordered the vegan standard and hubs ordered the banana bread French toast. The server was friendly and the food came out in a timely manner, considering the place was packed. Regarding the vegan standard, it seems they have cut back on the amount of tofu scramble and increased the amount of hashbrowns, which was a little bit disappointing. As usual it was very tasty though! I tried a bite of the hubs French toast and it was VERY unique and tasty! II will be getting that next time. I was disappointed to hear that they haven't brought back the vegan biscuits and gravy, but maybe once again they will! So the food was great but our experience, not so much, based on where we were sitting. I feel like they should not even use the last spot at the bar to seat a patron. Right next to where I was sitting is the place they bring the clean silverware to dry it off, then they would toss it into the silverware holder. The noise was very annoying and they did nothing to try to even be quiet about it. The other thing about that location is the register is pretty much right in your face, like 15 inches directly in front of me and someone was pretty much there the whole time. Other areas of the bar wouldn't be quite so bad, but next time we will wait longer to get a table or sit at the bar top that looks outside instead of at all the workers doing their thing and talking to each other. Other than the location of where we sat this visit, this is still one of our top spots for a yummy vegan breakfast, and we will be back!

Last week I had the Carbonara which was delicious. Served with lots of crispy bacon and choices to add. I tried the grilled chicken. The pasta was perfect and the sauce was amazing!! While dining the chef came out to visit and get feedback as well dropped off a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies fresh and warm out of the oven. What a treat!! This is the perfect go to spot for any and everyone. Don't expect sales people to mob you, just follow your nose off the showroom floor. Nice and clean and worth a little wait during busy times. The restaurant offers a mix of booths and tables, and I love the thoughtful theming throughout. The owner is incredible. So kind, genuinely passionate about what he does and always willing to customize orders to make sure guests leave satisfied. My husband and I visited for lunch on Friday. It was busy, but we easily snagged a booth and our food arrived quickly. I tried the Gregg's Chicken Enchiladas and absolutely loved it. So much so that I finished every bite, which is rare for me since I usually get full quickly! The plate wasn't small either, and the chicken was perfectly cooked with just the right touch of spice. It came with a side of black beans and rice. My husband had the Carne Asada Burrito and was equally impressed; he didn't leave a single crumb on his plate. We make it a point to visit at least once a month for breakfast or lunch because we love supporting this place. I cannot recommend it enough!

This Breakfast/Brunch gem features a U shaped bar flanked by booths on either end of the room. Walking into this place feels like walking into a Time Machine from when it was opened in 50s or 60s (website said 1968). Regardless it hasn't changed much and that's the charm of it all. The background story of who Harold was captures the American spirit and the wall decorated with his war medals brings it all home and bolsters the charm of this place. In addition to Harold's story, the business also has some Hollywood charm. We sat diagonal from the booth that Jack Nicholson sat in for the 2002 film "About Schmidt" where he played a retired insurance agent from Omaha (the film was also mostly filmed on location). You'll know if you're in the booth because there is a gold plaque commemorating the booth. The servers were fast and friendly. This diner is known for their homemade cake donuts, cinnamon rolls, and pecan rolls; we unfortunately did not partake as we were too full. Prices were reasonable and as stated before, you get a lot of food. Bottom line: if you need a brunch spot and you have the time, go check out this dime of a diner...you won't regret it.

We tried the bacon cheeseburgers. Mine came with onion strings, which were actually really good. Her fries were bland beyond saving. The burgers themselves were just okay. Not bad, not "best in the city" either. Maybe the wild menu options are where the hype comes from. Service is fine. Not warm, not rude, just efficient. Overall: classic dive vibes, solid onion strings, average burgers. If I ever go back, I'm ordering something with more razzle dazzle.
