I been wanting to try this donut it shop for a while as I found it on Yelp and saw it had great reviews ! They have a little parking lot which is convenient. We went inside and the lady greeted us she was very nice and quick to make our order although she was only employee there but it's a small little shop , not much to it but it works ! I got a bacon egg and cheese with salt , and ketchup on a rolll! It was very yummy ! I also got two donuts one chocolate frosted with sprinkles and one Oreo topping donut ! I honestly didn't care that much for the donuts , just not as fresh as I was hoping for , kind hard and dry inside. The icing and sprinkles were good though ! The prices were fair ! read more

Pictured is Village Donut Shop, a tiny store on a country road in Jackson, N.J. I've driven by it a few times but haven't stopped in until this past week. The name rang a bell and it occurred to me that this spot which can fit two, at the most three customers inside, was recently reviewed by Robyn Lane of WRAT 95.9 FM and Peter Genovese of nj.com. I stopped in earlier in the week for a breakfast sandwich and some donuts. Both were so good that I returned twice more. Previously I would go to Obco's in Toms River for donuts. They have a reputation as one of the finest donut shops in the state. I was surprised to find that I preferred the donuts at the Village Donut Shop. These are next level and the finest donuts I've ever had. So far I've had crullers, glazed, jelly, and something called chop suey which is a glazed donut with raisins, walnuts, apple, and cinnamon. But it doesn't stop there. I follow a guy who reviews Taylor ham/pork roll sandwiches. He rated the sandwich at Village Donuts as one of the best giving it a 9.2. I had it as well as a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. Both were the best I've had. The owner, who does all the cooking, bakes his own rolls. The eggs are fresh and cooked perfectly. Called "live" by the reviewer. Cheese was nicely melted and balanced with the quality bacon and pork roll (Trenton brand). I was so impressed with this place that I decided to post about it here. Every time we go in here, most of their donuts are gone. We'd get there early and the shelf would still be bare. I've never cared for their customer service nor attitude. I feel that the owner is racist, but didn't really have that confirmed until Hubs went in with me. You get this hostile and angry feeling when going in there. Not going there ever again. read more

This was a little shack looking spot with tables outside to eat, but nothing available inside. They had breakfast sandwiches and donuts available. The staff was pleasant while we placed our order. They also did not take credit or debit cards. 4 donuts were ordered ($7.50). Honey Glazed - This was definitely my favorite. The donut was light, and the glaze flavor made for a pleasant donut. Sugar Jelly - My complaint about this was the jelly, not the best quality, but the donut as a whole dusted with sugar was great. Oreo - This was my least favorite. This appeared to be sitting there awhile as it was a little hard. Coconut Custard - This was surprisingly good. I'm all the Jackson New Jersey about 3 1/2 years ago and was fortunate enough as I'm moving in to discover acquaint little donut shop on Cassville Road. I walked in and met the owner. He was amazing. His whole family was working in the business making donuts and breakfast sandwiches. I grabbed a cuppa coffee we chopped it up. We talked about the Jets and the Giants and about 15 minutes in the bullshit and about six dollars later I saw myself leaving there with a dozen glaze donuts, and six sugar jelly filled donuts that were the most amazing product I've had in New Jersey. The Village Donut Shop is a place that I drove by thousands of times, but I have never gone in. Part of the reason I never went in was because I would drive by in the afternoon or evening when they were already closed for the day . It also doesn't look like much from the outside. Then I heard that they've been around for decades, and that seems like the type of place that I would want to check out. Yesterday morning I drove by early enough to stop, so I finally did. They are a very traditional and authentic, tiny donut shop, with freshly made donuts of the highest quality. Only about one person can fit in at a time to order. They are definitely way cooler than any of those new trendy donut shops you see around. I got the Chop Suey, which is like an apple fritter without the apples. It was absolutely delicious. I will certainly stop there again when I'm passing by in the morning. Keep in mind they really bake the donuts only in the morning anyway because that's the time you eat them, and they need to be fresh in order to taste good. Highly recommend! read more

I really hate giving bad reviews and wanted to love this tiny little shack but the experience we had was really off-putting. There was a younger woman at the counter when we walked in, she was really rushing us along. There was still about an hour before they closed so I'm not really sure what the rush was. I can't really put it in words but we felt super rushed. Like when we said we needed a minute to look at what they had she was asking us how many we would get so she could get the bag ready and asked again when we said we weren't sure yet since we didn't get a chance to look at what they had. Once we picked out the donuts we were rung up so quickly we didn't get to pick out drinks. I handed her a $20 (cash only) for our $8 bill but only got $2 back. Due to the previous rushed experience I just kind of took it and walked out the door (you're supposed to wait outside due to the small space). When I went right back in to explain what happened and how I didn't get enough change back she gave me a look like she definitely didn't believe me. I was positive about this because I only had $2 in my wallet and nothing in any of my pockets. It was really awkward. Overall the donuts were good and their selection (from what we quickly saw) looked pretty good. I'd like to give them another try one day but I think I'll just send me husband in to pick them out. read more

Definitely a hidden gem. Their strawberry and honey glazed donuts were amazingly delish!!!! Melts in your mouth!!!! You must think I'm crazy, like cotton candy melts in your mouth, not donuts....I KID YOU NOT! They are amazing! Like ORGASMIC-LY AMAZING! I'm not a morning person at all, especially not on a Saturday morning, but had to in order to get to try these amazing (yes I used amazing A LOTTA times already) donuts. Since it was our first time going, my bf and I bought half a dozen of diff flavors to try. Custard filled donuts taste similar since it's the same filling but with diff topping. Not crazy about the crullers, a bit dry for me. The honey glazed and strawberry ones tho........YU-UMMMMM!!!!!! I'm drooling just from thinking about em. You gotta try for yourself to know. These guys are giving these other shops a run for their money. I've been to quite a few donut shops in my day(not DD). They have a good variety of some old school donuts with a few jaw droppers also. Dropped in yesterday to pick up 1/2 a dozen donuts. Not a huge selection of donuts in this small shop, but they cover all the basics. We went with a lemon stick, a coconut creme, a cinnamon roll (which costs a bit more than a regular donut), an apple crunch, a glazed cruller, and a sugar jelly. My Father-In-Law liked the lemon stick, between me & my wife, we thought the cinnamon roll was the best. The dough in the donuts with fillings was a bit dry, we were underwhelmed with the apple crunch and the coconut creme donuts. Overall, we were not as enamored with the Village Donut Shop as our fellow Yelp reviewers. I've eaten plenty of donuts in my travels, I find the donuts here to be fairly average. read more

I've been passing by this donut shop multiple times a week, usually after they're already closed, as they close pretty early, around 3pm. One morning I was able to get there early enough to stop by. I was welcomed in by the owner, who makes all the donuts himself and bought a box of half a dozen. He was nice enough to let me take an apple turnover instead of a donut and when asking between two donuts, he proclaimed, "just take both!" and placed both into my box. So in actuality I got 7 donuts for $9, which is still more expensive than say Dunkin Donuts but the taste is so much better. They're melt in your mouth and don't seem to get stale even hours and hours later. I'll be coming again! read more

So I stopped in here today at 6 am because I was up early and had heard many things about this donut shop. I wanted to give 5 stars somehow I feel it deserves 5 stars but something was a bit off. The donuts were delicious but something told me they weren't fresh perhaps a day old? Not sure how all that works in the donut world but we did enjoy them even tho they were a bit heavy which I am contributing to them being a day older. My husband is a jelly donut connoisseur and he adored the jelly donuts he must have had 2 through the day and guarded them all day long at work. The Boston cream was fantastic and could have skipped the cinnamon bite and plain. The store itself needs some work inside something brighter might be nice for the ambiance to reflect the donuts and the service while not unpleasant could have had a little more effort I mean it is 6 am and people are patronizing you a tad of appreciation might have been nice. 20.00 for a dozen might seem slightly steep but you get a lot of dough in the donuts as well as stuff on the inside. The griddle was full of bacon sizzling away and perhaps the bothersome caveat I can't put my finger on that I was expecting to smell fresh baked donuts and instead smoky bacon. This road side shack has been baking the donuts and slinging breakfast sandwiches for as long as I have been making the morning drive to court in Toms River, and likely a lot longer than that. It is tiny inside, with donuts on the left and grill on the right for those fresh and greasy sandwiches. Open at 6, they are often bare by 10. The coffee is hot and caffeinated, if not the best of breed. But, the raison d'etre are the amazing doughballs, deep fried and then dipped in a heavy glaze as thick as amber tree sap and sweeter than Tupelo Honey. These are not the Krispy Kreme light as a feather variety. No, siree! These bambinos are heavier, thicker, chewier and sweeter than those guys. Not exactly dense, these bad boys are certainly, "substantial." If you like this style donut, you will have found your Donut Heaven. The Glazed traditional and Glazed Crullers are knockouts! I honestly don't even know where to begin with this review. There are so many amazing aspects to the Village Donut shop. First of all - it's ALL ABOUT PERSONALITY! The donut shop is run by an old school Italian named Sal (Salvatore) and make no mistake about it - without him there would be no donut shop. In a world full of chain restaurants and drive thru donut joints that all have the same stale corporate taste, Sal gets up every morning at 3:30 to make his donuts and pastries by hand. His recipes haven't changed in the 17 years that he's been at this location and for almost a century before that. Now is where I have to stop and insert a disclaimer - if you're looking for the "wawa experience" or "Dunkin service" then don't bother reading any further and don't even try stopping at the village donut shop. Now if you're a millennial like me whose nostalgic for the good ol' days of small town America and seem lost in this corporate modern world - then by all means, you must go to the donut shop (or simply "Sal's" as I call it). The entire shop is no bigger than 15'x20'. There is barely enough room for four people to stand comfortably inside. Outside there is a small picnic table and a few beautiful flowers (planted by Sal himself). Walking into Sal's makes it feel like you stepped back in time to the 50's. Usually there will be some sort of oldies music playing or classic Italian. Sal is always there! Remember - he IS the donut shop. The doors open at 5 am officially but I've been there at 4:25 one time and Sal made me a sandwich. The coffee is out of this world!!!! I've tried many times to replicate it at home but it's impossible because I'm not Sal. There is no coffee bar. Each cup is made to order unless you're a regular and sometimes you can get you're own if Sal is busy at the grill. There is only one blend - house blend. There is no decaf, dark roast, hazelnut, etc etc. Sal's clientele is almost 100% regulars. Many of them, like me, come there every single day. It's part of what gives the place such class and charm. People from all walks of life come in every day and Sal knows almost all of them by name. He knows how they like their coffee. He knows what part of the homemade crumb bun they like. He knows about their family and all the kids love him. What's interesting is that he comes across as an ass sometimes but if you know him well enough then you understand that it's all part of his amazing personality. I only mention this because if seen newbies come by and get turned off by his approach. The official closing time is yet to be determined. Usually it's when Sal is out of donuts. Some of the reviews posted here mention that the selection was limited. This is what makes the place so special - it's like a limited batch of fine wine. If the wine is amazing then you will do whatever it takes to get it and be thankful even if you got a few leftover grapes (or crumbs in this case). This is a weird way to end a review but I realized that it's impossible to explain to someone why this place is amazing. Bottom line is this - if anything in my review seems appealing to you then definitely check out this donut shop but ABSOLUTELY GET THERE BEFORE 9. If you take the time to get to know Sal and appreciate his fine craftsmanship then welcome abroad to one of the most exclusive club of "regulars" in the world. If none of this sounds appealing to you then I'm sorry but please don't come. As much as I want to rave about the Village Donut Shop, I don't actually want everyone to find out about it because it will be flooded with even more people and that will ruin my mornings ;) read more
