Being held hostage at the Village Cafe... been waiting for check for 20 min... ordered the specialty french toast which was supposed to be chocolate chip cherry -there were literally neither cherries or chocolate chips....SUPER disappointing... wait staff all seems to be annoyed that they're at work and taking it out on customers. This place is wonderful! They have cute little antiques all around the restaurant that are available for purchase. The food is outstanding. They have a coffee cake of the day, a quiche of the day....our last visit I had the quiche of the day which was a Denver quiche. It came with fruit and a huge muffin! Service is always great. During the busy season, you may have to wait, but they get people in and out quickly. Its usually never longer than 15-20 minutes. It's well worth it! read more

Sad about the downfall of this place. Giving it two stars out of nostalgia. I actually worked at Village Cafe for a summer a few years back, but in the years since, the owners seem to have bitten off more than they can chew with new ventures, and the quality (staff, food, atmosphere) has suffered accordingly. I used to unabashedly plug this as the best breakfast in Door County, but the last two times I've gone, I've been sorely disappointed. About a year ago my food was bland as could be, and looked hastily prepared. Wait staff had been snippy and acted put out when I asked for something as simple as ketchup. No matter how busy we were in the past when I worked there, we served every customer with grace and a smile and the waiters and cooks ensured every dish was perfect. When I went back today, it sealed the deal. I won't be back. I drove 2 hours round-trip from Green Bay to meet an out-of-town visiting friend here, so excited to share the breakfast with her. To start with, my waiter was ill-suited for the job - he seemed nervous and disorganized. I watched him have a terribly uncomfortable interaction with the table across from us, and then mix up the order for the table next to us twice. Other waiters on staff, save one, also seemed frazzled or unhappy to be working on a busy vacation-season morning. Our food took twice as long as normal to arrive, and when I bit into my french toast I actually began to tear up. Someone had entirely botched the batter! It was so salty it tasted like a brine. Thinking perhaps I was crazy, I had a friend try a bite. She too was disgusted and exclaimed it took half a cup of coffee to get rid of the flavor. I clearly explained the problem to the waiter twice, explaining the batter was ill-prepared, not my dish in particular. He took 20 minutes to return, informed me he still hadn't understood, and had "assumed" the staff would be re-making my order. He regretted to inform me he "missed" the announcement they wouldn't be serving french toast for the rest of the morning as they were too busy to re-make the batter. I was shocked. When I worked there I'd be in a bad, close-to-fired position for not only being that off my game, but telling a customer they're totally out of luck over 20 minutes later. I was already late to a morning meeting at this point, with my friends already finished eating. Needless to say I declined his offer of a "bran muffin to go" instead. The owners don't sufficiently delegate or train managers, and hire too many young teens to run the majority of their operations. The days of old when a handful of talented, experienced cooks split their time between Village Cafe and Villagios are gone. They seem to have a shortage of waiters skilled for the job, and it shows with a good chunk of their staff now ill-suited for the work. I'd avoid the Mojo Enterprises until the owners sort out their mess and go back to what was working beautifully in the past. Such a shame. read more

kind of the stand by breakfast-at-noon place in dc. usually there's a long wait in the summer on weekends. during the week or in the winter, you can get a seat any time (plus, they're actually open in the winter, which is a big thumbs up from me). the food is consistently good. i've had the omelettes numerous times and they are very tasty and come with a side of these delicious seasoned potatoes. the other meals don't come with these potatoes on the side (which is disappointing) and they actually cost like 3.50$ extra if you just get them a la carte (that's a lot!) so that's a bummer. the eggs benedict are a favorite of my late grandpa. they always look delicious so i'd probably try those some time too (although *plug* if you stay at the village green lodge in ephraim, sue makes the hands down best eggs benedict EVER *end plug*). my sig o got a simple 2 eggs and bacon platter when we went there last weekend and it seemed good. it came with 4 slices of bacon so that's a lot. i have to say sometimes i feel like the portions could be bigger. .. but i have kind of a big appetite, so maybe they're alright. also, if you want sugary sweetness with your breakfast, try the hot chocolate. my cousin always gets this when we go and it's delicious. it's served in a huge mug and comes with like a mountain of whipped cream on top. one star for consistently good food, one star for those delicious potatoes, and one star for being open in the winter. always a classic brunch stop for me. read more

Bad choice for dinner. We saw the menu and thought 'yum chicken pot pie'. Instead it was a watery broth that wasn't very flavorful at all and it was quite pricey for the small bowl it came in. Hubby ordered a beef version of the pot pie and I think he had 2 or 3 teeny tiny pieces of beef. Plus service was ridiculously slow...refill on your drink...guess again. This has been a must visit for years on our trips to door county. This last visit was not very good. When we sat down my water glass was filthy, and had to replaced. Our service was mediocre, and the coffee cake we ordered was forgotten until we reminded our server. I had the potato bowl, which was drowning in sprouts. The chunks of potato were huge, and underseasoned. My husband got standard breakfast fare, and his sausages were almost raw in the middle. Perhaps VC needs to go back to basics on cuisine, and spend less time buying chotskies. We won't give up on this joint, it's always been great until this stop. read more

Visited the cafe twice around July 4th, 2008. The decor is pretty over the top, with lots of pastels and 'cute' art strewn across the walls; much of the art is available for purchase. It may be a little much but just hold on until you get the food. Food to try: - Breakfast Sausage. Very nice flavor and texture. Typical order is 3 medium-sized links. - Baked Goods! We're talking: coffee cakes, carrot cakes, and even Tollhouse pie. Look/ask for their cakes. Since they are rather large - even splitting it with two people - be sure you have enough room for them before you order. - Spicy Potatoes. Instead of hash browns (flat and brown), I got hash the size of quarters that (I think) used some Curt's Table Spice* They were spicy but not overpowering. My biggest complaint is that some of the 'taters' were blackened, detracting from the overall flavor. *This spice is made in Door County and has garlic, salt, pepper, and ?? google around for curt's table spice door county I had spicy crab-cakes and cream cheese omelette one day and veggie benedict the other. Both recommended! The restaurant is usually a tad busy so you may have to prod your (or someone else's) server for things like coffee refills. read more

To the comment below, by Valerie, I would like to respond to. I was actually there that day, and remember the occasion. If I remember correctly, you were very hostile with the waiter, cussing at them. It is not the waiters fault, and he tried to service you the best he could, went back to the kitchen to ask for your special order, as HE and THE KITCHEN were very busy. If that isn't good service, I don't know what else is. After the kitchen failed to make this request, he then went the manager of the store, and tried to clarify the information, where you then stormed out. They gave you tremendous service, however YOU were extremely rude. Very immature behavior. First of all, I would like to mention that the menu there CLEARLY states that lunch is not served until 11, however BREAKFAST is served all day. Yes, they use the same ingredients that are used during breakfast, but Village Cafe is a very busy restaraunt, and with my experience in restraunts it can mess up their way of doing things and ruin the experience and even orders of others. It can drastically slow service down, even in the instance of something so small as a grilled cheese. The service here is wonderful, I would disregard that issue. Maybe you may have slower service, but this is a very busy retaraunt especially on Sundays. read more

We've only gone to breakfast here, and everything is exceptional. The cherry or pumpkin pancakes, french toast, breakfast potatoes are wonderful. This place was a great find for a starving couple wandering around Door County! The owner was so nice and did a great job of checking up on tables. The food itself was fairly priced and above average for the area. Our meal took a while, but you could tell that everything was made from scratch. The decor was loud, but exactly what I want when I am on vacation. Both the egg dishes and the lunch/sandwich specials are outstanding! This place is sooo good. I know the breakfasts are delicious or whatever, but I am not a breakfast-food person. (Seriously, I eat chili mac for breakfast at home.) I am here to tell you that lunch is also delicious. I had some kind of bean burger with cajun spices, and my boyfriend had a turkey cherry wrap thing, and they were both awesome. And the decor, as others have mentioned, is hilarious and weird. There aren't a ton of dining options in Egg Harbor, but the Village Café makes up for it. read more

I love the Village Cafe for breakfast. You have to get there early or you will be waiting for a table on most summer weekends. During the week the wait time is shorter, but in any case, it is worth the wait. If you have to wain, look around at their decor, it is fun and great. A good restaurant needs more than decor to keep people coming back, and the Village Cafe has great food. I eat mostly breakfast there and there is plenty of choices. We ate breakfast here on our way out of Door County this week, and it was fantastic. The food was plentiful and delicious, and my bacon was cooked EXACTLY as I like it (very, very crisp, just south of burned, lol). And the best part is that they use Fiesta dinnerware to serve. This place has great quality, tasty food. I got the granola, super tasty but would have wanted a little more. My dad got the Greek wrap and potato chips. Do not skip the chips. If you're in the area during the off-season, be sure to go here, because it's one of the few restaurants that stays open all year. Regardless of when you're visiting Door County, though, this is well worth it. We stopped in just before our long ride home. I got the Egg Harbor breakfast (two eggs, two bacon, two sausages, two pancakes). My wife got the corned beef hash breakfast. Both were excellent. The corned beef hash is homemade, not that horrible stuff from a can. The coffee was very good too, including the decaf, which can be disappointing at some places. Coffee refills were numerous and prompt. The two-sided menu is quite large, and that's just on the breakfast side. The server was delightful, the decor is cheerful, and we had a great experience. Honestly, I can't think of a single thing that could have been improved. read more

Had breakfast here on our last morning in Door County. I had the PB&G Wrap (Peanut Butter, Banana, Granola and Yogurt in a warm wrap) and it was delicious and filling, along with a side of fruit. My husband and I had already ordered when we spied a piece of coffee cake on the neighboring table. And by "piece" I mean "slab" - it was enormous! So we figured what the heck -we're still on vacation! and ordered that as well - the flavor of the day was Raspberry, and it was so delicious! Could have split that between the two of us and been full, but glad I tried the wrap as well, as it was something unique I've never tried before. I read some of the other reviews complaining about the decor, but I thought it was cute and charming - all the colors and knick knacks made for a happy place that reminded me of my grandma's house. This is a cute place. However service was SLOW. Food was marginal for lunch but breakfast foods were better.

If you are looking for a breakfast spot, look else where. First off the waitress that served us couldnt take simple drink orders. Second, the food we ordered took 35 minutes to come out.. food that takes like 2 minutes to make. And when it came out someone in my family had a hair in their omelette. 3 others asked for poached eggs and got a hard boiled mess, I asked for hollandaise and got a puddle of yellow mess all over my potatoes. Village Cafe saved the day when we were desperately looking for breakfast after 11am in the 'off season' of Door County. The food was good, my girlfriend had Heuvos Rancheros and I had French Toast (my favorite breakfast ever) and some breakfast potatoes. All of these were cooked capably and were very tasty. One dines at the Village Cafe mostly for the eclectic atmosphere and the location. There are not that many choices for a casual breakfast or lunch in this stretch of Door County. As a result, I find the food to be no better than average and the service to be less so. There was nothing wrong with any of my visits but on the other hand, nothing remarkable about my experiences stood out. I will stop here for a meal when I am in the neighborhood, but more often than not will choose to drive further up or down the road. read more

I ordered eggs and I'm fairly certain they used liquid egg substitute. Really, they were nearly tasteless, watery, and altogether bad (I got three peoples' secondary opinions; they agreed.) The service was slow, especially for a restaurant that was nearly empty.
