On an early Tuesday morning, I walked into this very homey, pleasant kitsch restaurant, greeted by the waitress hostess--smiling as brightly as the sun. Quite a welcome! After the pleasant observation that I was welcome to any seat, I was told about the help yourself coffee. Very good coffee! I was aware of the reputation for freshness of the breakfast fare. So I put it to the test, choosing the Eleanor Roosevelt--(vegetables with some Swiss cheese and a light mustard sauce (one of their claims to fame)). The dish was an egg omelet cooked to perfection enfolding the fresh nearly crisp vegetables. This was not the overstuffed, over-oozing with cheese omelet. Just the right combination of ingredients. Walked out with a mini rhubarb custard pie for $5 (dessert for after dinner), currant cream scone for $3 (good for breakfast next day), and ginger snaps $1.50 for two. Every time we eat here we keep muttering two things between us. 1.) This is the jewel in the crown of Door County and we're soooo lucky that it's in Jacksonport. 2). They need a sign that says "Breakfast and Lunch." I should add that we've polled numerous friends that visit Door County and everyone thinks it's simply a bakery. Of course, it's not only a bakery. It's the best breakfast place in Door County; probably in the state. It's a five star breakfast. Yes, at around $12 bucks a person (avg.) it's not as cheap as some. But it's worth every dime. We've had, at one point or another, virtually every breakfast on the menu. Each is spectacular, beautifully presented and always accompanied by a artistic assemblage of fresh (and consistently perfectly ripe) fruit. The smoked whitefish cakes with poached eggs is a particular favorite. 'Colonel Mustard in the Garden' is another favorite. There's one breakfast that looks like an American flag; bacon strips serving as stripes with cheese stars in one corner. Everything is fresh and beautiful. (See the photos.) Lunch sandwiches are assembled with generous portions on thick bread. It's the kind of sandwich that you bite into and think, "now this is a sandwich!" You get your own coffee, which is the most inspired thing about this place. You walk in, pick your own table and head for coffee bar even before the waitress has noticed you're there. No waiting for 10 minutes for coffee here. I want to hand out two stars just for that! Every waitress that has ever served on us at Town Hall Bakery has been cheerful and friendly. The owner (middle aged, dark hair) is virtually always around. He appears shy at first, but just ask a question and he's happy to talk. What else can I say? There is EXTREMELY interesting art on the walls and around the restaurant. The unmistakable painting, "The Rower," is particularly memorable. The place is atmospheric, but not in the way the word may imply;it's light and airy feeling. It colorful, slightly chaotic, decidedly funky. Okay, we almost walked out because the prices were a little much for small quantity of food but the yelp reviews drew us back. The breakfast food was out of this world. Creative dishes. I haven't had pancakes for at least 6 months. I've been watching my calories. I decided to "carb up" for a 20 mile bike ride. I couldn't have chosen a better place to break that fast. I mean big deal, they're just pancakes right? I never thought I could ever get this excited about flapjacks. Ill be back. These are panCAKES, not mear flapjacks. They are almost a 1/2 inch thick and almost as light as angel food cake. My mother loved her food too. There was only a single waitress for the entire place, but she handled everything beautifully. I don't know how she did it. She was friendly, and patient. Despite the circumstances she really seemed to love her job. My only complaint is that I found the menu a little confusing. When a plate of crisp bacon was delivered to our table, I wondered, "who ordered that"? It looked really good and I wanted a plate of my own. It turns out it WAS mine. That said there were some very curious dishes on the menu. I would have loved to have tried most of them. That said, you can get a simple farmer's breakfast if you want. The place is decorated with what I can only describe as bric-a-brac, but it's not in the least bit gaudy, or twee. It's open, airy, and light. I'll be back for both breakfast and lunch. It's not just unusual, but downright impossible in this day and age, to find a restaurant that is not paid a regular visit by a Sysco Food truck. Fortunately for me, I managed the neat trick of identifying one such example right here in Wisconsin - the Town Hall Bakery, in sleepy Jacksonport, WI, midway up the eastern shore of Door County. A meal here will likely put you in mind of the phenomenon that sometimes occurs on having discovered a true dining gem. The thought that, were you to be in possession of a magic wand the waving of which would change its location to a hip zip code such as Seattle, Boulder, or perhaps Soho (where it would fit in like a native), it would be the kind of place destined to quickly become, deservedly, an institution. I'm not kidding when I say that this is one of the most delightful dining experiences from the aspect of atmosphere as well as the taste sensations and quality of ingredients in evidence. The menu features something for everyone, from creamy yogurt and house made granola (which I'm told ships to devotees from the four corners), to featherlight and flavorful pancakes and innovative egg dishes, garnished by tasty fresh fruit, and a pretty nasturtium blossom for good measure. The bakery is first rate, with cookies, cinnamon rolls and scones, pies and cakes, that are truly made from scratch, as opposed to the "scratch" version that my local bakery labels their baked goods. Restaurants on the Sysco dole, are laying in all manner of cost cutting, time saving, flavor killing "mixes" that, prepared by them, pave the way for the disingenuous claim of "home(house)made" status. Do not be fooled people! Though special spots like the Town Hall Bakery are the kind of place that could be found in many neighborhoods all over this country prior to 35+ years ago, they are now, sadly, a dying breed. So if you care about the concept of keeping restaurant food real, as opposed to a science project designed to create a nation of addicted diners, marching like zombies towards a smorgasbord of denatured, greasy and nutritionless fare, then vote with your feet and pay a visit to this place. I have been to this place 4-5 times over the years more out of necessity ( coffee to go) and a couple of times for breakfast. Each time I promise myself not to return. The man whom I am presuming is the owner is usually rude and unwelcoming. This morning was no exception- when I walked in, he greeted me with, " all we have is coffee and a couple of scones." Uh, ok I just came in for coffee to go anyway. However, right behind me some people walked in i guess he knew and he immediately greeted them by asking if they wanted a smoothie, a latte, a mocha, maybe some quiche? Unbelievable. Smell is my greatest memory retriever and this place smelled EXACTLY a like a little cafe I used to walk to when I lived in Seattle. Such fond memories walking in here. Baked goods for days! My husband and I had the good fortune of stopping at your establishment on Monday, 10/12/15. We were on our way home from Door County, after a long weekend, and decided to stop in for breakfast. He had noted that your restaurant was well rated on Trip Advisor.com. Breakfast was fabulous, the best ever, we had the apple pancakes and the smoked whitefish omelet. They were beyond compare. The atmosphere was inviting, allowing us to go to the counter and refill our coffee cups at will. It felt like I was in my grandmother's dining room-so inviting. I loved the antique shopping that was available-tasteful-not over the top. We will definitely be back. We, also, decided to take home a piece of bakery, as we were much too full from your generous servings to eat any there. We bought the frosted cinnamon bread which was nothing but wonderful. This place is a gem in Door County. Amid the sprawl of tacky strip mall coffee shops that seem to be popping up this is a legitimately gorgeous building, with beautiful art inside and fantastic food. Perhaps due to fatigue the owners are no longer serving lunch as of Summer 2017. But the breakfast is fantastic and the feeling around the wood-filled building is not to be missed. If you can have one breakfast in Door County, this is where you want to go. read more

We've been going to Door County for years and were trying to hit up some eateries we haven't been to before this trip. We ended up on the Jacksonport side of the Peninsula and there was an event in Bailey's Harbor so we had to find a place to eat south of there before going to Cave Point County Park. The dining selection in Jacksonport is beyond limited. Especially since we had a baby with (didn't want to bring the baby to a bar)... We ended up eating at the Town Hall Bakery and it was pretty disappointing. A series of things occurred that made it a very weird experience for us. We walked in and went for the drinks, but the standing cooler next to the counter although it was filled with bottles or pop it was turned off, and had a really, really offensive odor coming out of it. So they actually had no cold beverages at all. They gave us ice, but the pop all tasted off (maybe it was the ice?). Whatever it was, It was a gross start to the meal. Then after about 15 minutes, our food finally came and it was odd--The thing I ordered they were "out of" so they made me something else--a chicken sandwich of sorts with some "locally grown" fruit around it and "chips". The chips were mini Tostidos. I thought they'd be "house made"...not so much. The fruit was weird mystery plums and things like that--nothing really appetizing. I couldn't even finish the weird sandwich they made either as it too tasted off. It was just not good. My sister is perhaps a kinder person than me and tried to finish her food. My husband didn't eat any of his. He thought it was disgusting. There was nothing to offer our baby at all. I think the owner felt bad when he noticed we didn't really touch most of the food (which was also pretty over-priced considering what we got) so he started bringing baked goods over to us for free to take with us. The scones were rock hard. So was the cookie he gave us. It was just getting worse and worse. He also gave us some bottled water on the way out. Luke warm bottled water. Yum. So basically I would NOT recommend this place. Drive somewhere else. Its over-priced and not good. I am not sure how they have so many stellar reviews when we found it so disappointing. read more

We returned after four years, again on a weekday in June, but this time we both left feeling kind of meh.... it's OK but wasn't worth the drive south from Baileys Harbor (where we spent the night). I mean, if you're in the area and you're hungry, it'll be fine, but I felt that they are not trying to add that little something extra that makes it worthwhile to go there. My husband again ordered the whitefish cakes but he thought the flavor was too strong. The guy waiting tables seemed reluctant to give me toast with my omelet ("do you want toast with that ... one piece or two? maybe you two can share?") and the bread did not appear to be homebaked (even though this is a bakery) and came dry, with little packages of jam. The waiter never checked back to see if everything was OK. Again, our meal was OK, but for $11 to $14 for breakfast, it should have been better. Also there was very little that could be purchased in the baked goods display (small scones were $3 and cookies were $2.50). If it's Tuesday, there's a better selection of baked good at the farmers market across the street. read more
