Decided to have a family lunch on a whim today & are so thankful that we had it at the Village Baker! This little unassuming restaurant is off the main drag of M104 with a small parking area in the front, plus a small parking lot behind the building. Walking in the front door, you're greeted by the bakery on the right, the restaurant on the left & a unique gift shop/waiting area in the middle (all items are made by local artists). The decor is eclectic, creating a cozy atmosphere. As we had a wait for a table for lunch (note to self: reservations are a smart idea for next time!), we perused the bakery. Cookies, scones, muffins, cupcakes, chocolate confections, cake, cheesecake, bars - easily, something for everyone! I'd highly recommend the butter butter cookie & the creme brûlée bomb - heaven! Lunch for our group (4 adults, 2 kids) included mimosas (from the full bar) & kiddie cocktails complete with umbrellas. My kids were ecstatic! They have separate kid's menus complete with rainbow rye bread grilled cheese & teddy bear pancakes (berries for the eyes, strawberry jam for the mouth), both of which met with great favor! We found this place by accident while web searching for a place to get cupcakes. As soon as you walk in you smell the fresh baked bread. First impression is the restaurant it's self looks a bit dated and gave me low expectations of the food. I was proven wrong, it doesn't match the food. The food was delicious. We ordered the crab cakes appetizer, 2 different Spaetzles, a French martini & a German beer. My martini was pink with foam, online shows it as yellow with no foam. I think it may have been wrong but it was still good. The crab cakes were smaller than expected for the price but good. The meatball Spaetzle was a little blain but okay. The beef & Mushroom Speatzle was my favorite. I love the fact that the noodles are homemade & you can tell as soon as you see the dish. We arrived just before 5pm on a weeknight. They were not busy. For not being busy service was slow. We waited looking for our server & then called out to her to get things ordered. She was very nice just not attentive. Next time we will sit at the bar. Stopped to the bakery on the way out. Grabbed a few things. I'm in love with their fruit tartS. One of my favorite desserts that is hard to find. Had breakfast as a group of 6. ordered the breakfast pizza. My food arrived 15-20 minutes after everyone finished eating. They did comp my pizza and provided a pretzel while others were eating. Had them box the food to take home. Still disappointed with service this time. Normally have great food and service here. going to chalk this off to karma hates me. The service at this restaurant is absolutely terrible. Came by for brunch and politely waited in line as they let group after group go ahead of us. Clearly the fact that we were from out of town -- visiting the area for a summer vacation since my husband grew up in the region -- made us unwelcome at this establishment. When they finally did deign to seat us i(after a 45 min wait) they decided they were now only serving lunch. Unreal. We were one of three groups who were selectively shuffled down the waitlist that day. Another group of women stormed out after waiting over an hour. There are MANY great places to eat in Grand Haven area. I wouldnt waste my time on these rude xenophobes. Maybe try the Unicorn Tavern or Morning Star for a more agreeable atmosphere and fantastic food. We will not be stopping at the village baker ever again. read more

I had just arrived in the city of Spring Lake for the first time and wanted a warm and hearty meal. I did my yelp review and found this location offered desserts. Reading the reviews really brought it home and I made my way there. I was able to dine in but they also offer take out. The menu seems to have a French-German influence and I ordered my very first taste of spaetzle. You can craft your own dish and I highly recommend it. The portions are ideal and the flavors on point. After dinner, I ordered some pastries to be boxed up (They were closing otherwise I would have eaten them on the spot). Very confused how this place doesn't have 5 stars... My husband and I popped in for pastries and a chai latte, but ended up staying because the bartender/barista, Sherman, was so delightful! Sherman not only made a great chai latte, he was witty and made time for us at the counter. The food was also delicious! It's a scratch kitchen and everything was well priced and so good! I ordered the lobster Benedict and it was only $17!! Plus a homemade Asiago scone, forget it!! That is an easy $30 back home!! First off Jill behind the bar is terrific. Was told I could sit there because there was a wait for a table. I asked the high school aged hostess if they were doing spacing at the bar and she said oh yes there's plenty of space. Went and sat at the bar. After ordering two older ladies wanted to sit at the bar but wanted me to move over I offered my seat because trying to keep some space because of Covid. Went back to hostess explained situation and from there it was all attitude. She was rude and acted like I should know how the restaurant works telling me I could wait or order to go. Noticed a bunch of empty tables in the bakery section. Asked if I could sit there. She said yes if you order to go (With the most condescending tone). Explained to her I've never eaten here before. I stopped by the mini Muskegon location during 4th of July week and the baked goods were so good that I had to go visit the larger location for lunch. The drink menu is very expansive with a full bar, espresso menu and multiple wine and beer options. My husband and I went for lunch on a Saturday and had a hard time deciding between the breakfast and all-day menu options because there were so many. If you do they won't call it and then later they will be angry with you for not crowding in the modest waiting area. Next, when they try to upsell the hash browns by adding onions, don't be surprised with a little pile of raw onion slivers on top. That's not how they do it in Idaho or at Waffle House but this is Michigan. Ordering Cajun? Right ingredients no spice no heat. You can add your own Franks but that tastes like Buffalo, not New Orleans. SanFrancisco sourdough toast? It did remind me of Swedish wasa brod. Cold, hard like a rock. Lots of people like it. This spot is so cute!!! We had a chocolate cherry scone, a lemon poppyseed muffin, and a iced chai latte. The bakery items not only looked delicious but tasted it! I'm a picky chai drinker, so this one wasn't my favorite, but still drinkable! The service was also spectacular! Very attentive and ready to help! My husband and I had Sunday morning breakfast at the Village Baker. We arrived about 10am and were seated immediately. By 11 it was fairly crowded and there was a wait both for the bakery and to get a table. The service was quick and friendly, and the food was amazing. My husband had the shrimp and wild mushroom omelette, with hashbrowns, rye toast, and Guatemalan French Press coffee. The omelette was huge, and he mentioned that he probably hadn't needed to order the hash browns. I ordered the lavender/peppermint bark latte which was amazing, and then waffles and hash browns. The waffles are made from dough not batter, and are hands down the best I've ever had. Again, I didn't need to order the hash browns (which were delicious), because it was just too much food. I wound up bringing half of my breakfast home. If we're ever in the area we will definitely be eating here again. read more

It's not often that a review of mine earns that coveted 5-star rating. Village Baker did in spades. The key here is balance. The pizza, while not the best I've ever had, for the price absolutely can't be beat. It's crispy with still a little chew, ultra fresh toppings and not over the top. We had spatzle with grilled chicken, herb butter sauce, mushrooms and peas and it was perfect. Someone deserves a ton of credit in the kitchen. So refreshing to see a chef not afraid to season their food. Artfully crafted. We started with pretzels and crab cakes. Both excellent. The beer cheese wasn't what I expected, I would have preferred a stronger more bitter beer flavor, but it was so well done as a cheese sauce there's nothing more I could ask for. We even stopped at the bakery and got some muffins and the bill didn't break the bank (less than 60 for all of this and more). The decor is pleasing, the building is quaint, we were seated quickly, Stacey our server was top notch. Between the huge menu, the quality, the price and the people, you won't find better. So proud to call this a local Spring Lake business. We'll be back often. read more

Wow! Just WOW! We wanted to order everything on the menu. Decided on a breakfast sandwich and an omelette. The sandwich is on an asiago scone with sausage, egg, and white cheddar - delicious but quite rich to the palette. There is a piece of melon as garnish, but perhaps tart berries would balance better (order some OJ to do the trick). Hash browns were dense like a pattie from McD, in a different stick-to-your-ribs way. The omelette was fluffy and filling. The only negative thing was the toast.
