Julian Anderson's Julep

Multiple people in our group have lived in New York City, and we were so excited to experience this level of a bar in Pittsburgh. It's New Orleans inspired. I appreciated the gorgeous interior design. The rich red, gold, black. The music helped keep conversations more private as the seating is like a NYC subway car where there are bench seating along the length of the walls facings each other. The bartenders chiseled ice squares, used beautiful crafted stemware and frosted mugs, concocted lime foam, mixed on-fire ingredients, and sweetened the air for a next level libation experience. The service was very attentive and they didn't just drop off the drinks but gave instructions on how to best enjoy the custom drinks. Twenty-layer twice-baked fancy fries with chicken nuggets was a very tasty indulgent snack. Note: it comes with crème fraiche to cut the salty flavor so don't skip it. It also comes with a choice of caviar which increases the price significantly. The whole experience was worth every penny to us. Note: there is 3% operating fee added as well as a 20% gratuity.

The atmosphere alone is worth a visit. The drinks are definitely crafted with care and have a lot of complexity, but with only two bartenders working, it took quite a while to get ours. Not the place to go if you want quick service or are grabbing a drink before another event. My biggest downside is the price point--most cocktails are around $17. They're good, but at that price I can really only justify having one. Note: They do not have food, just snacks like peanuts. Overall, amazing ambiance and well-made drinks, just expect slower service and a higher bill.

In addition to indoor seating on the first and second floor, they also have a fenced in patio outside for sitting. As we sat outside, we saw groups of people who could not figure out how to get into the speakeasy. Another thing that happened was that they closed early the night that I went because of the lack of customers. A group was trying to come in as we were leaving but we told them they were closing for the night. So be aware of that, if you're planning to go late night (past 11 pm). However, the drinks were amazing as always! They now added a couple of small bites so we tried the cucumbers. They were delicious and packed with flavor! Our drinks were great as always. They have even more options than the last time I was there which was nice! I still really enjoy this little space!

Apteka is one of my favorite restaurants, period. One of my biggest gripes about eating out is…read morethat everything is always so unhealthy and expensive. This isn't the case at Apteka, where everything is homemade and plant based. Despite the love and care that is put into each dish, the prices remain low (your entire meal will be less than the cost of a single steak at a traditional restaurant). The ambiance is a bit chaotic, so I recommend outdoor seating if possible. They don't take reservations, so you will have to wait unless you show up well in advance of opening. All of this is worth it! Everything is good here, but the ice cream we had on our last visit was exceptional. I was so full, but I would have eaten a second scoop. If ice cream is on the menu, get it. They use a dense cashew cream, which is imo the best base for vegan ice cream. I wish they would open up in DC, but this is the type of place that can only exist somewhere like Pittsburgh. If you are in the area, run there!

Excellent Polish food on the limited menuand an excellent matching wine list, thoroughly modern. It feels sleek and casual, with a professional and knowledgeable crew. Seating is chaotic since there aren't any reservations and you sit wherever there is space. I had fried pierogis and a cold beet soup. Packed with flavor and excellent on a warm summer night. The wine went so well with the food; I think it was all Eastern European wines, since what grows together goes together.

This is a super cool spot, and I'd say it's great for everything from a quick bite to a full meal. I'd also highly recommend it for a date night. My only very minor consideration, and probably more of a summer thing (because I run a little hot), is that it can get a little warm near the open kitchen. It's on the third floor and they are cooking with proper charcoal skewers, so I think that's probably just part of the experience. Having said that, they do everything possible to keep it comfortable. The atmosphere is chill, and the service is excellent. Since we had dinner reservations nearby, we just wanted a couple of bites. The otoro was melt-in-your-mouth awesome--fresh, with high-quality sushi rice(my nephew said it was the best sushi he's had in the city). We also tried the chicken and wagyu beef robatayaki, both of which were perfectly cooked and finished with a delicious sweet and umami glaze. I'd definitely come back for a full meal, but it's also a great option if you're looking for a cool place to grab a cocktail or beer and a couple of appetizers before or after other plans.

I loved being able to see into the kitchen and watch them cook the yakitori. The food was good and fresh, but honestly none of the flavors necessarily stood out as particularly memorable. Overall, a fairly good experience with nice presentation and a really beautiful atmosphere.
