Came here again as part of the a Hartford coffee crawl. I got the Costa Rican coffee with a shot of brown sugar cinnamon. Coffee should definitely be enjoyed in store and not on the go to experience the drip and siphon pot ways of brewing I forgot to specify that I wanted cream/milk in it so it came out black and I could really taste the coffees full flavor. I had a brief, but very positive first experience at Victus Coffee. I had heard great things from friends so I was excited to give them a try, and it was also one of the participating shops in the Hartford coffee crawl. I went to their downtown Hartford location. The space itself was comfortable, and the service was warm and welcoming. They don't offer as many specialty drinks or flavors as other places, but that's okay. Just keep that in mind. I ordered the honey mint cold brew. It was extremely straight forward, but also extremely tasty. The coffee was strong and had great depth of flavors. Very good quality coffee. The mint and honey complimented and highlighted it, playing only supporting roles. So that was all great. Unfortunately, the parking and traffic challenges that come with the downtown location will keep me from returning as often as I would like to. But if I were in the area, I'd happily make the stop! I have heard equally wonderful things about their Glastonbury location, though, so I'm excited to give that one a try too. If you're in the area, or just up to the Hartford traffic and parking, I would highly recommend Victus. read more

Visited on a Thursday morning after open. Convenient parallel parking opportunities in front and side of establishment. The shop was clean and seemingly well organized. They only allow customers to use the space, WiFi, and bathrooms, which I'm sure helps with this. There were three different pour over options, and the Ethiopia medium roast I tried was great. The staff were friendly, but not particularly talkative. The prices for the Hartford area seemed reasonable given the quality of beans and drinks received. read more

Victus is a staple of Hartford serving up some coffee staples. Their menu doesn't steer farm from the classics, but they do offer some excellent seasonal menu options. There is a variety of seating options and the décor is lovely. The baristas are extremely talented and offer up some great suggestions if you're not sure what to order. Their beans are amongst many other local coffee shops in CT and they offer an online order/subscription option. One thing to try is their Siphon coffee pot! Parking is along the street or other lots downtown but is walking distance to many Hartford businesses. read more

I was immediately welcomed into the establishment and chatted with the staff. They were super helpful and accommodating. I had the blueberry scone, pumpkin chocolate chip cookie, and iced Americano. I had a really pleasant experience here. So thankful for Victus moving into this space downtown. I've been a couple of times because it's close but more importantly because I like the vibe and love their mission. The baristas are always friendly and move super quick when making a drink but still put so much TLC into it. Over my visits I've enjoyed a couple of iced lattes- which were amazing, local canned drinks like 860 Kombucha, and a few snacks. My favorite has been prosciutto, Brie and fig jam on a croissant but the morning options in the case are super yummy too! It's a good space to get work done because it's very quiet and the music is perfect for productivity but there aren't a bunch of outlets so just be mindful of that. read more

I ordered an iced matcha latte and an egg, bacon, cheese piadia (spelling might be wrong) for $18. They asked in Whole Milk was ok and I said ok. The iced matcha was basically tasting like only milk. I had 3 other people try it and all 3, including myself, said it's not good. I considered what to do for a minute and decided maybe I should say something. I never ask for any drinks to be remade but I understand this is generally acceptable at places like Starbucks. So I asked the Barista if I could add more matcha to this drink. Her attitude was immediately very defensive and told me that it had been made with the standard number of ounces of matcha and that matcha powder is very expensive. She implied that my question was stupid because matcha is obviously expensive and if I want more I need to pay for it. So I then told her directly that this matcha tastes terrible and asked if she wanted to try it. She said she did not want to try it and that I should not have ordered it with whole milk, that next time I need to order it with oat milk. Then she walked away saying "sorry you didn't like your drink". This interaction was so bizarre to me. I don't understand why people act like they have to protect the expense of the matcha like it's coming out of their salary. If she made it badly, then maybe some constructive criticism is not a persecution. Maybe she gets these kinds of asks often and maybe that's something she has to take a minute to process as her problem. I'm sure there are ill intended people out there, but I wasn't asking for a refund. I was with my parents who are both in their 70s and my kids both under 14. I wasn't some high schooler trying to get free drinks for all my friends. It's just a bad experience that I don't wish others to have. I ended up going to the Bloom Bake Shop nearby. If you're in the area and considering one or the other, consider Bloom for a better experience. The coffee here is amazing! I was in Hartford for a 4 day work trip and went to Victus 3 of those days and was so impressed I brought a colleague with me one day! And yes, she really enjoyed her coffee too! Plus the shop is really nice, I wouldn't call it cute, it's more of a modern sleek style? Not really sure how to describe it but the layout is bright and airy with plenty of room to work if you need to or just relax. It's definitely a vibe! This J.Rene Coffee Roasters shares space with the Cookshop on LaSallle in WHC. I saw the storefront when I finished lunch across the street. I needed an iced coffee at the time. One thing led to another, and I ended up at J.Rene. Service was friendly, but not very knowledgeable. The lone person working wasn't sure what kind of roast (light, medium, dark, etc.) they use to make the cold brew. She told me she believed it was a blend of South American and African beans. The coffee tasted like a dark roast. So I'll assume it was a dark roast blend. It was decently smooth and balanced to start, but it had a slightly bitter finish. It was fine, but not my favorite. I wouldn't rush back to J.Rene, but I might return under the right circumstances. Three Stars. read more

I've been wanting to get coffee at J. Rene in West Hartford for while. There are two locations, one is on Park Road, and one is on Lasalle Road. Today I'm reviewing the one on Lasalle Road. I've tried going here several times but they were always closed. I guess I got lucky this weekend. This is basically a coffee counter inside of the kitchen store Cookshop Plus. They have a very small seating space by the window, a tight squeeze for three guests, otherwise your coffee will be to go. I got an iced latte with whole milk. It only comes in one size, 20 ounces. I would typically get a small coffee, but they don't offer that here. This was just under $6.00. I asked for a bit of sweeter, and the barista said that would be an extra .75 cents. What? The coffee was already $6.00. I guess I made an unpleasant face when I heard that. He just let me have it this time. The coffee was pretty good, solid and full bodied. They also sell a small selection of pastries. While I enjoyed the coffee, I'm not impressed by the space or lack of variety. Maybe their other location has more to offer. This is fine, but I won't be coming back. read more

Victus Coffee is inside Cookshop Plus, but a sign is usually outside, so you won't miss it. Victus Coffee closes much later than the J.René location on Park Road, is never crowded, and you can usually easily find parking across the street. There is minimal seating, I think four seats at most, but this isn't exactly a sit-down coffee shop; it's more of a grab-and-go type of place. The coffee beans they use are just as high quality as the ones used at the Park Road location; one difference is that the Victus brand is a bit stronger, which is great for me. This location usually has the same barista, and she's very kind and knowledgeable about the different beans and syrups used. I highly recommend their in-house made cinnamon brown sugar syrup. Overall, highly recommend! read more

I'm so happy to see that J. Rene has expanded to a 2nd location in WeHa, and one within walking distance too! This one shares a space with the The Cookshop, so there's not as much seating, but you can pick up all your coffee supplies and kitchen goods after downing your morning cup of joe. The coffee menu is similar (mochas, lattes, espressos), but I'm not sure if they offer seasonal syrups at this location. The selection of sweets and pastries is also smaller. Still, this makes for a convenient stop for your caffeine kick whether you're out for a stroll or meeting friends. read more

If you're a true coffee lover (and I don't mean Starbucks) this is true artisan coffee. Yes of course they make lattes and other types of coffee but they are true coffee artists. I travel for a living and I appreciate great coffee places. They can do pour over coffee which has always been favorite, until now of course. I had an opportunity to stop in on Mother's Day. I saw the sign, and the store looked impressive. It is a really nice art deco experience. I ordered a latte and it was delicious. J. René Coffee Roasters is a very covid friendly coffee shop. The baristas you meet always have such an amazing conversation topic to have with you as you order your coffee. If you are not exactly sure on what to order, their suggestions never disappoints. Aly always greets me with the kindest hello, and makes a great cappuccino. This is honestly the only coffee shop I know of since I moved to Connecticut that makes a traditional macchiato! If you enjoy a superb doppio and macchiato, the espresso shots are rich in flavor and have such a velvety feel that it's one of the best things to start your day with. read more
