This may be a two star review but take it with a grain of salt. Maybe I came on a bad day but I will and want to definitely return. I just can not ignore the many issues that can be avoided. Good Cuban food seems to be one of the hardest things to find in Southern California, an I ALMOST found it here at Versailles. Aside from Porto's, there just are not that many places to begin with let alone good. This could have been a five star review but I just can't let go of the issues. I first tried calling and kept getting a "voicemail box full" message, even after opening. I noticed others mention the same but some also say they could get through so although I was able to place my order online, I think they should check on the phone service too. I arrived around 11:20 for an 11:30 pickup and the place was empty except for the two older gentleman working the bar/front area. One approached me asking what I was here for, when I said I am picking up an online order, as he walked outside he pointed to the other who was walking behind him. By then he had picked up the phone and I did not want to interrupt him. He saw me and waved me over so I said again, I was here for an online order. The other gentleman walked back in and the one on the phone pointed back to him. Then he said "5 more minutes". That was fine I wasn't in a rush and know I arrived a bit early but they could at least communicate better. I was handed my order and I was happy to see my mamey shake prepared just as my order was bagged rather than it made and let sitting. I got back to my office (less than a 10 minute drive) and immediately caught the strong delicious smells of the food. I couldn't help but notice how overpriced and expensice the mamey shake was, the second issue with this restaurant. I was aware of the $8.50 price tag but figured they have one size and that "one size" would be something like a 24oz cup. Nope. It was just a normal, maybe 16 oz cup. Porto's charges half that price for a mamey shake, $4.69, and the Porto's version tastes better. This had a weird bitter taste almost like the fruit had gone bad or wasn't ripe yet. I get that prices of everything are going up but you're really going to price gouge a shake like this for double what other places charge? I also did not realize the sandwiches come with fries. The website menu says they do but I was looking at the order page which makes no mention of a side or that you can substitute the fries for plantains. Although it was nice to have a side, the fries were the soggiest I've ever seen and they were cold. Third issue with the meal. We ordered the tostones appetizer which was also cold and soggy, not crispy crunchy like tostones should be. Fourth issue. They came with two dipping sauces - a cilantro like sauce that was okay, and then the garlic mojo which was not good at all. It was weirdly citrusy and yes I'm aware this is the marinade for the pork but as a side sauce it just did not taste right. Three of us tried it and none of us liked it. Now for the stars of the show - the Cubano and Media Noche sandwiches. I'll start off with the only negative here - they were not toasted. A Cubano and Meida Noche are absolutely complete and perfected when they are nicely toasted, these were not. They were wrapped up and the already soft breads became even more soggy from the moisture and steam. Other than that however, the sandwiches were AMAZING. Honestly the BEST Cubano and Media Noche I have ever had. We split the sandwiches as they were big enough to do so and if I was able to keep leftovers I definitely would have because it was a lot! I love the sweet bread was absolutely delicious and perfect for the media noche. Right amount of mustard and pickles for that sharp kick, plenty of cheesy goodness that stretched on every bite, and the meat - oouf! The ham was hearty while not too salty and the pork was soft, juicy, and just delicious. There was so much meat too they definitely don't skimp on it. It's a shame really, other than the bread issue the sandwiches seem like they came from a completely different restaurant compared to the other items. As I said at the beginning, the issues here have to be addressed. But the sandwiches were overall amazing and I would absolutely return for the media noche sandwich. I am hoping we came on just an off day and next time things will be better for a 4 or 5 star meal! read more

One of my all time fav restaurants even though prices are quite a bit higher now than I would like--all restaurants are more expensive! Pandemic effect. My favs are the Fried Bananas, Roast Pork mixed with the sides of rice and black beans or the Shredded Beef. yum!! Love this place!!! Been coming for years and they deserve this review! The food is always delicious. They bring out this amazing crispy garlic bread to start. I got the shrimp in garlic and butter sauce for the first time and it was so flavorful. My friend got the chicken which is amazing and what they are known for. I have tried a few things and everything has been delicious and has not disappointed. The parking lot is small but that is not their fault and there so a street parking. This is a mandatory stop for us anytime we head to southern CA. I love the Arroz con Pollo and my husband has been working his way through every item on the menu for over 10 years. Everything is great. Service is exemplary; we are often in and out in thirty minutes and no one bats an eye when we are dusty and dirty from camping or in sequins and bow ties from attending formal events. This place has been a staple in LA for decades. Went with 2 girlfriends for lunch on a Sunday. It was fairly empty. Parking was easy. Server was friendly and attentive. Myself and another friend are pretty picky ac neither of us had eaten here before. I had ropa vieja and she had arroz con pollo. She really enjoyed it. Mine was good. This resturant is a place I've always passed by and have been eager to try. The crowds it drew, led me to it! Came here for a lunch date, and was pleased with the garlic smell as soon as I entered the resturant. I was instantly intrigued because I love garlic, and was seated with a nice warm bowl of toasted French bread pieces with garlic butter. It was delicious!! The only thing I didn't like was the stewed version of this Cuban chicken. It's skin was soggy and didn't hold enough flavors. I would have much rather preferred the crispy LS chicken instead or, the grilled chicken breast with onions on top. It looked great when everyone else ordered theirs. However, my chicken seemed warm, not hot. The rice wasn't fresh and tasted like it was steamed in its moisture for too waaay long, that it had lost its taste. The oxtails was good and fell off the bone perfectly. The white rice was plain. I wanted to give this place 5 stars because of its wonderful, impeccable, customer services. Unfortunately this wasn't the best Cuban food I've had thus far. I was super excited, then was kinda let down. I even let my niece taste the food when I took it to-go, and she didn't favor this meal either. I think this wasn't a great day to order. Or maybe it's just not particularly good eats for my liking? Hole in the wall. Ambiance was a little dim. Furnishings seemed well used. They provide complimentary buttered bread which is addicting. We got the cubano and the famous chicken. The sandwich was your standard cubano, but it was made well. The bread was toasted well like you'd expect from a good panini, crunchy on the outside yet soft on the inside. The meats had a good bite but were not difficult to chew through. The pickles were crunchy and contrasted nicely with the rest of the ingredients. The cheese was gooey but didn't overwhelm the rest of the sandwich. I liked the diagonal cut because it let me get a great cross-sectional view of the interior. While the sandwich was good, the fries were even better. The fries were quite crunchy on the outside yet soft and fully cooked on the inside. They reminded me of slightly beer battered fries in texture. The seasoning was also on point. The chicken was cooked well. The meat was tender, the white meat was not dry, and the dark meat had its flavor brought out. The sauce was saucy and new to me - savory and nice to mix in with the rice. While I would have enjoyed crispy chicken skin , I appreciated the juiciness of this chicken even more. The onions were surprising and also new to me - they had a zesty and sharp taste brought about by their pickling process. The acidic crunchiness from the onions contrasted with the meaty savoriness from the chicken. The plantains were soft and sweet. The rice and beans were cooked well, and I liked mixing the sauce with the rice, but they (the rice & beans) were the plainest parts of the meal. read more

This is one of my favorite places to eat in the Valley. The food here is excellent. The garlic bread is toasty and packed with garlic and butter. They serve large portions, so come hungry. I usually get the grilled pork chops with rice, black beans, and fried plantains. The combination of the savory pork, citrusy signature Versailles sauce, and sweet plantain is out of this world. The service is wonderful. Despite the fact that it's usually very busy, the staff is always makes sure that we have everything we need. Versailles is a borderline legendary Cuban restaraunt in LA. Everything came out super quickly despite being busy. It was very casual. The complimentary garlic bread pieces were quite good. The salad was very basic , but was decent with the vinegar. The plantains were amazing , easily the best part of the meal. The Cuban sandwich came highly recommended and I didn't like it so much. There wasn't enough flavor in it for me, especially the pork.The shredded beef was pretty good too. This place won't wow you but it's decent enough. Versailles appears to be past it's prime. Used to eat here a few times a month in the mid-2000's and while service was never great, it didn't suck like it has the last few times we ate here. This place used to always be packed with a half hour wait or more in the past, but was only about 30-40% full (between inside and outside)...on a Saturday night...during the dinner rush. Our waiter seemed bothered by our presence and felt like he was rushing us during our entire visit...I even called him out as he was walking away while I was in the middle of placing my order. To make the situation worse, he got pissed off when I brought to his attention that he charged us for a soda that we did not order. So what does he do? He removes the $2.99 soda, but now charges me $3.25 for a side of mojo that I guess he didn't charge us for on the original tab. While I guess the bill is now accurate, it was kind of a douchebag thing to do. To make the situation even worse, had he done his job well and asked questions by giving me options, when I asked for a side of mojo, I would have opted for the small $0.75 1oz side of mojo and not a huge $3.25 cup of it. That said, the food is just as great as I remember and would have given 4-stars had the service been better. As for quality, Versailles is pretty legit. While this location was never as good as the previous Manhattan Beach location, Versailles tastes more authentic than most other Cuban restaurants in The Valley and I dearly miss the Universal Studios location on Citywalk. For context, my wife is Cuban and Versailles was her first recommendation. Besides the service, the only thing Versailles could have improved upon is that if you are going to offer outdoor dining, some patio heaters would have greatly improved our experience. Versailles isn't the only Cuban restaurant in town any more and if you want to keep your customers coming back, you might want give some remedial training to your waiters. read more

I love oxtail!!! When I think of Versailles I think of their oxtail stew. Full of flavor and tender fall off the bone meat. I went with my friend and we shared the Oxtail and Shredded Beef. They were both good but my ultimate love is the oxtail. They always have the best service, the place is nice and clean. Tostones ($5.50): fried green plantains. The perfect start to a perfect meal. It's been over 10 years that I've last had Cuban Food. We popped by today for brunch and saw it was kinda empty at first but, I'm my own critic and don't ever jump to conclusions! We started it off with Cafe Con Leche, "Latte", I ordered the Vaca Frita-Sauteed Shredded Flank Steak, "OMG" every single bite was Amazing! The food is absolutely tasteful. My wife ordered the Lengua Guisada- Stewed Beef Tongue, every bite was delightful! The food is So Good that we didn't even wanna finish it because then we would be sad and cry and have withdrawals the whole day, so, we took it to go. What other choice did we have. Service was a little slow to my liking, but our food cane out quick and hot. I ordered the Bistec De Palomilla- top sirloin steak. The black beans, rice and plantains were amazing. The best Cuban plates in the LA/valley area. The fried pork chunks were crispy on the outside, but still super tender and soft on the inside. Stingy with the bread. Placed an order to go and tipped well but they would not give me any bread without paying extra as though it was an option on the menu. The woman at the front had a bad attitude and never gave me a receipt for the extra bread she made me pay for. Seemed sketchy. On top of it all, the food's quality has slipped while the prices have risen. Fattier meat with less balanced flavors.
