I've been to quite a few pearl tea places in the area: Verde, Tapioca Express, Quickly, Q-Cup, Eggettes, Tea Era, Tea Celcius (no longer in business), Tea Plus (no longer in business, but a good example of bad tea), as well as some random places in Washington and a few others I can't think of at the moment.
Verde's milk tea is frothier by far than any of the other places I've tried. Its fruit teas are consistently better than that of other places. They don't curdle, they aren't overly syrupy, there is strong (albeit artificial for the most part - though their "smoothies" contain real fruit) fruit flavor as well as strong tea flavor and the flavors compliment each other well.
Verde has a particularly yummy and creamy melon milk tea, the almond milk tea is tasty and has strong almond flavor without bitterness, the coconut milk tea is creamy and flavorful without the off-putting slightly rancid aftertaste that Eggette's coconut milk tea has. The mango milk tea is not as creamy as I would perhaps prefer, but unlike some other places that advertise mango "bubble tea" and don't seem to have any actual tea in them, it has a good balance of tea and mango flavor.
I like strong tea, so I love that the Earl Grey is served very strong. I rarely order plain old pearl milk tea (I usually get a flavor), but it is the black tea that they put in most of the drinks unless otherwise specified, and its flavor is good in those drinks that I mentioned. The jasmine green milk tea (just green on the menu, but it is jasmine) is quite good, though it does not have the complex flowery jasmine flavor that you get from the Jasmine Green from Tapioca Express. This actually makes it a more versatile tea, as the green tea at Verde goes well substituted for the black tea in most of Verde's milk tea drinks, whereas the stronger and slightly more bitter jasmine flavor of that of Tapioca Express is more distracting (can be good or bad). On a side note, the mint green milk tea is refreshing, and one I like to get when I'm pretty full already but must have tea.
The degree of sweetness and flavor of the pearls varies, but the pearls are generally chewy and sweet, and are a pleasing texture - not too mealy like they sometimes get when they've been sitting in liquid too long and not too hard as they sometimes are, I'm assuming if they've been sitting too long or cooked improperly. Non pearl options like rainbow jelly and nata de coco are good, too.
Verde also serves a variety of foods, which I have less experience with. I have ordered MANY a thick toast from Verde, and the toast is hit and miss. When made correctly (in other words, the way I like it) it is moist and buttery and delicious. Wrong as it may sound, the toast is always better when they put the layer of butter underneath whatever flavor goes on the toast. Even the chocolate is improved with that slightly salty, moist and, well, buttery extra layer underneath. My favorite flavors of thick toast are peanut butter, coconut, and chocolate in that order. That covers about half the flavors. Peanut butter may sound simple, but theirs is a little sweeter than ordinary peanut butter and gets just the right crispiness and oozing peanut butterness underneath when toasted. If I'm in the mood for a savory snack, the garlic butter thick toast is delicious as long as they put enough butter! The jam butter thick toast (one might be blueberry and there's another flavor maybe) and plain butter thick toast are of little consequence to me. Maybe they're good, but nothing special. Other items on the menu include bento style meals, snacks like tea egg (interesting), fried chicken (salty & oily but...good), and fried tofu (yummy, has a great garlic sauce), various desserts: cheesecake, panna cotta, shaved ice (I'm sure others will have a lot to say about the shaved ice - they look GOOD, but I'm always too full from my tea to get a huge thing of shaved iced, too).
The ambience is enjoyable. Verde is often full of young couples and college students (it seems to attract a lot of Stanford students), though I see older middle aged folks, too, as well as families. I go more often in the evening after 7pm or so, but I've been at all times of day. It's not a very large space and does get pretty crowded at times, so you may not always find a seat inside, and sometimes people are smoking outside the door, which is unpleasant for me. Though it can be crowded, the wait is rarely long. The employees are historically methodical and efficient about getting everyone's tea made. Hopefully that won't change with the recent employee changes.
In the over ten years I've been going to Verde, the menu has expanded a little, but they serve the same tea that has been consistently good all these years. In the past year the employees have changed a lot, so there's a greater chance that the quality of the food/drink during an individual visit may not be up to par, therefore I can't give it 5 stars. read more
