As a (non-raw) vegan in lockport, Vegan cafe was one my least favorite places because it was raw and pricy. I gave it another chance, and another chance, and another chance, and another chance. And finally. Finally I can say... vegan cafe is my favorite. Nothing wrong with the food, it's just hard for me to eat raw, cold food. But it's growing on me. If this place can change my mind about raw food.. then they are doing something right. I been to maybe 8 full vegan restaurants, and maybe 50 vegan "friendly", but this place is home. maybe because I'm from lockport, or it's different than any other restaurant I been to, it's unique. it's a treat, and it's healthy. So delicious! Well presented. Super nice employees. Just the whole execution. The atmosphere is great and the fact that it's vegan, raw and organic can't be beat! The cheeses are good. I loved the cheesecake. It's to die for. Really. They take a full approach to health and nutrition and while raw can be limited they make it fun, tasty and accessible. The location is pretty far out of my way so I can't get there too often but I appreciate that this is like the only vegan place in that area where locals would be very limited otherwise. Incredible service. The host and staff immediately welcomed us when we entered the cafe. Provided us with a sample of their meatless meat on a chip and sold us on the meat lasagna. Answered all of our questions about plant-based eating, which was extremely helpful. Ambiance is welcoming, friendly, and open, where you can see the staff prep all the food. If you've not had the opportunity for this particular type of restaurant, it is an actual pleasant surprise. I personally, have not had raw vegan food and my palate has now been enlightened. This little gem is located in downtown Lockport - I haven't been to this burb yet (Mirella, you are taking me all over the place I LOVE IT ) but after going, my sister exclaimed, "Ah one of my favorite river-town suburbs.." This is located on a main street in Lockport with a lot of easy street parking. My husband and I came around 2PM, which for an after lunch hour, the café was getting a steady stream of people. The servers were incredible - they greeted us, explained the dishes are raw and answered any questions. We went with the Margherita pizza which was flax crust with a tomato type sauce on top. I was skeptical but it was REALLY REALLY GOOD!!! Flavorful, spiced just right and filling. The meal also came with salad and choice of fruit or brownie. My husband, being the demon he is, requested we try the fruit over the brownie. The fruit was a mix of apples and pineapples with a caramle drizzle on top. The salad was tossed with dressing added in. Quite an excellent, EXCELLENT meal. They also have other options which looked delish including an extensive juice menu, nachos and basically a fully 2-3 page menu. The environment is cozy with brick walls, a REALLY cool ceiling (don't worry I took a pic) and music a-playing. An entire plant based restaurant is in a small unassuming cafe. It makes it worth going on a long drive over there for lunch and getting some good healthy eats. Vegan Cafe has a pretty limited inside area but it's never that busy thanks to its somewhat remote location in Lockport. Has a variety of styles including Mexican such as taco salad and also has desserts such as brownies. The prices are pretty high which is the only bad thing. Came here for an all vegan date and had a good time with plant based food. It's only open for lunch and closes after a few hours. This makes it very hard to get to. Not only is it kind of far away. On top of it there's limited hours so it's only good for lunch, or early dinner if you go for an evening before it's late. Also it's closed Sundays and Mondays so hours are almost the worst thing about it. What is the worst thing about it are prices. I had the Green Juice. It's $6.95 for the regular. This is made with celery, chard, cucumber, ginger, green apple, kale, lemon, and spinach. It's very green. This is a good way to get vegetables. Both of us had a Taco Salad because it was among the cheapest food. It's $7.95 for the small. This has guacamole, pico de gallo, and vegan taco meat, over spring greens, topped with vegan nacho cheese and sour cream, so quite a lot of plant based stuff. Good for an occasional lunch of eating healthy. It would be nice if they were open more often. The prices are also high and we would have got a lot more if they weren't so expensive for the bigger things. read more

Cute little restaurant in downtown Lockport. They have been here a while but the area is really growing with great restaurants and shops. My husband and I were greeted promptly by the friendly employees and explained how their food worked. The menu was big with a lot of raw vegan options of the favorites. I was really happy to see not everything was mushroom based. I wasn't sure what to expect. For starters we got the pizza bites. Sunflower almond crust, cashew cheese, marinara and fresh basil. My husband then got sloppy Joe's which was a walnut and sun-dried tomato based meat open faced on flatbread. I got the pad Thai which was zucchini noodles with cabbage, carrots, cucumbers. Both meals came with a salad. I got the garlic ginger dressing with my salad. We both loved the food. Even my husband who only ordered burgers and fries! My husband and I are not vegan, but we appreciate good food, and Vegan Cafe is excellent. It was our first time in, and we were treated like good friends. The menu was completely explained to us, and we enjoyed a sample plate of several dishes. It was hard to choose. The Pad Thai with zoodles is delicious, and my husband raved about the sloppy Joe's. I was enlightened by a Yelp Elite event to this places' existence. I had never been to Lockport before either, so it was a nice treat to find such a cute looking town somewhat nearby where I live. I love all foods, including vegan food, but I don't eat Raw Vegan food often, so this was quite an experience. ------------------- I ORDERED: ***Pad Thai Daily special $13 (usually 17.95) "A delicious almond-based variation of the classic Asian favorite. Served over zucchini noodles with carrots, cabbage, cucumber, green onion, chopped almonds, and sesame." Rate 4+/5 This was a full size order of their pad Thai dish. The noodles are zucchini noodles aka zoodles. These were fresh and topped with a nut based (I think almond) sauce. This sauce was so good! It was light but still flavorful. The dish was accompanied by a fruit salad (mainly apples, with some walnuts, topped with a cinnamon sauce) and a side salad (greens and your choice of dressing). I enjoyed the fruit salad although I wish there had been some other fruits included- maybe strawberry or something. Regardless, the sauce on it was delicious and paired really well with the apples- I mean cinnamon and apples!! You can't go wrong. I loved the sesame ginger dressing I chose for the salad. I mean it's sweet, but had a slight kick from the ginger. Definitely happy with my selection. OF NOTE: You can find the DAILY SPECIAL on their Instagram page. It is usually $13-14, which I think this is a great deal for what you get. Otherwise, they also have a LUNCH SPECIAL for $10-13 served Tuesday-Friday 11:00-14:00 Which "Includes a half order of any menu item (not including appetizers) plus your choice of one signature side salad and a brownie bite" ----------------------- The following I had as part of the event, so I can't comment on the price, but I can comment on their flavors: ***Nachos $12.95 for half order. "Taco meat, guacamole, salsa, & onions, topped with nacho cheese & sour cream. Served with corn- flax chips." Rate 3/5. I know these are a fan favorite, but this is where my love of cheese ruins my ability to love these nachos. I really wanted to like these more than I did. If I thought of them as chips with Pico de gallo and guac, then they would have gotten a 4+/5 from me. But because these are listed as nachos - which in my mind means it should be cheese forward in flavor - these fell short. I didn't taste anything that reminded me of cheese. I've had raw milk cheese and vegan cheese/cheese sauce that I've loved, but I'm not sure if I've ever had a raw vegan cheese/cheese sauce that I've enjoyed. That being said, I got the meat on the side and when I added that to the chip, I felt like I was eating a taco. That stuff is seasoned really well! I just don't think the sauces taste like cheese or sour cream which is why these didn't remind me of nachos. Again- that doesn't mean these aren't good, they are. They have lots of great fresh flavors! One thing to note, if you don't eat flax a lot, and your digestive system isn't used to eating raw and fiber forward meals, if you get this dish, you may get a little bloated after. That's not bad; I think this is the most fiber forward meal I've had in a while! I'm sure my gut and bowels will be grateful later. The half order was the perfect amount. I don't think I'd be able to finish a full size, especially if I'm saving room for dessert! ***Brownies $6 "Made from pecans, dates, cacao, and vanilla" Rate 4+/5 These are yummy. They are soft and sweet, very cacao forward which is what I'd expect from a brownie. They were topped with a cinnamon vanilla sauce. NOW I was to try the brownie turtles! I think those would be my fav and likely 5/5. I was sad that they didn't have the cheesecake available. I really wanted to try one. But I heard they will have a strawberry mixed with some delicious sounding citrus-like fruit available tomorrow. So, I may need to make my way back to Lockport to try it. read more

My wife is vegan and she's told me places like this are very rare, especially in the suburbs of Chicago and it's primarily a west coast thing since it's a raw vegan place. This place was absolutely fantastic, I nearly passed up the place too. Tons of great stuff in the area too I might add! I am not a vegan or a vegetarian, and I came to this restaurant with a family member who is vegan and I have had vegan and vegetarian food before, but it was always hot. This is only cold food cannot see who would want to eat this type of food When it's cold outside and then having more cold food. Anyone can make salads and that sort of thing but I was not impressed with the food especially at the price point. Also, I would expect an establishment like this to procure fruit and vegetables from nearby farms, that is not the case, I don't even think all of the food there was organic which is a big letdown read more

Came here with a friend to try local vegan joints. Parking was slightly difficult, as the lots seem as if they may be unsafe or reserved, and street parking is hard to find. The location seems at first impression run-down, but the interior looks on-trend and there is plenty of seating and space inside. Harvest Pasta - found the description citing the multitude of elements to be included in the pasta to be slightly deceiving. Once ordered, the food looked and seemed easily prepared and not as robust. There wasn't much of an overall flavor, but the ingredients were fresh and the dish was clearly health driven! Also ordered a mango tea which was delicious. However, couldn't help but be slightly disappointed in the price for what you actually get for the food and drinks. This place impressed me after a not so great experience ! Let me start by saying how happy I am this place is under new ownership... Trying this place awhile back made me not leave a review due to some lacking qualities. I am glad this place stayed and changes have been made- very smart move! I walked into thinking I would get mediocre service like last time and since it has been a long while I was ready for anything. Firstly, I was greeted warmly and given a nicely short/sweet/detailed synopsis of who and what this place does. It was nice walking in and not being looked at like an alien - I felt like family. The smiles were genuine and no judgement passed.... (Side note: I am vegan ... I've def. noticed a lot of click/cult association and I really hate it and don't understand it- totally something I stay away from) Again, it was awesome how warm the welcome was :) thank you! The food quality was outstanding tonight and exceeded my expectations. I went back after one year, and the lovely ladies running the place (Linda was the chef's name) both remembered me from one year ago. I have been there exactly once before, and they still recalled who I was, where I'm from, and what I enjoyed the last time I came. So rarely does any restaurant "get it" when it comes to service. The folks at this place have got service down pat. And they've also got flavour and excellent selections. On the specials menu for that day was a raw lasagna, a zucchini fettucine alfredo, and an eggless egg salad. There were more, but those were the ones that the waitress mentioned. I immediately put down my menu, and asked for those. Then, while they were being prepared, I asked for an order of the famous stuffed mushrooms. The mushrooms were, as I recalled, divine. I devoured the lot of them with my friends. Then, the food arrived, and I cheered at how beautiful it all looked. Then we all fell to, attacking the food as if we hadn't eaten in hours. As usual, we shared everything, so that we could all taste a bit of each thing, and still feel like we had a full meal. This time, because I was so excited by the specials, we saved dessert for last. The lasagna was like eating the sun. Bright, vivid tomatoes, lots of herbs, lots of garlic, and deep flavour permeated the dish. The fruit salad on the side was delightful. The alfredo was so good that I all but licked the plate clean. It was an enormous plate of zucchini noodles, topped with a creamy alfredo sauce whose texture and taste still give me good dreams. The eggless egg salad was my husband's favoured dish, with a side of baby spinach and walnut salad, topped with dried cranberries. The dish went together beautifully. Then, as last time, I asked for the raw apple pie. And the brownie. WHAT A BROWNIE. Dense, chocolatey, and not too sweet. The apple pie was, as usual, a heavenly treat. So glad we made the trip from Valpo to Lockport to try Healthy Sins Vegan Cafe. So impressed with the creativity and flavors put into the menu. Great surprise in this old-school, not quite rebounded downtown Lockport. Everything is fresh, raw, vegan, and cold. Also the most flavorful and satisfying possible lunch even if you're a carnivore.
