I love the variety of options at Veg Cafe! The space itself gives a warm and comforting vibe, and my friends and I were seated near an open space/balcony type area. Service was slower than expected for a weekday lunch for ordering and receiving our meals. For the mushroom pasta, the mushrooms added a deep, savory richness that made the dish feel hearty despite being fully plant-based. The sauce coated the pasta nicely without being heavy, and the flavors felt balanced and thoughtful. My portion size was filling, although a friend commented that her portion size was smaller than expected. Still, a solid choice for some cozy food!
Veg Café did not disappoint with their phenomenal Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge menu this year. We started with the crispy potato taquitos. I love potato tacos and am always looking for good ones in the area. These particular potato taquitos were crispy with generous potato filling and a pumpkin mole sauce. Talk about an elevated taco! Our next dish was the stuffed pappardelle with butternut squash, mozzarela, and toasted walnuts in a sage sauce. The pasta was toothsome and held up well with such hearty ingredients. However, the star of the show was the miso maple salmon. I eat salmon regularly and the feel and taste of roasted oshi slmon filet was dead on like salmon. It even flaked like real salmon. We were truly impressed with this dish. We ended this fantastic meal with a pumpkin toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. The toffee pudding was dense, but not dry. The hazelnut caramel sauce was delicate and worked well with the vanilla ice cream. We always come to VC every year for the challenge and they never disappoint. Of all the restaurants we tried for the Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge this year, Veg Cafe was hands down my favorite. Every single dish was a homerun. Besides the food, service was outstanding. Our server was very knowledgeable and eager to share info about the dishes and ingredients. The cafe itself is cute and quaint. It's small and cozy with eclectic decor.

Yummy food and excellent service. Allowed me to knit and chill on an easy Saturday. The potato taquitos were a lil spicy but I'm extra sensitive to spicy stuffs.
Overall we really enjoyed Veg Cafe! We went on a Saturday night and I do recommend placing a reservation as it does get busy. The restaurant itself is very cute and offers a relaxing atmosphere. Not pictured, but we also ordered the mushroom calamari and bruschetta. OMG the vegan calamari is amazing! The bruschetta was also good, nothing too crazy though. I ordered the lasagna and definitely recommend it. Fun fact, our server mentioned there was something 133 layers of noodle? The layering made for a very pleasing texture with lots of space for sauce to hide. Husband ordered the Moroccan bowl-it was hearty, filling. and had incredible amount of flavor. Great experience!
I love this restaurant and have been going for years!! So many creative plant based meals with rotating specials, it's impossible to get bored. I got their special--Pazole, and it was delicious. The broth was thick and had plenty of hominy and mushrooms which made it hearty. I wish they had some tortilla chips to go with it. The potatoes are a must get! They have a nice seasoning on them + the house made ranch is FIRE. So good! The space itself is cute and eclectic which makes it cozy and the service very friendly 10/10 recommend!

I was told most of the menu is seasonal, with dishes rotating in and out four times a year. A few popular staple items stay permanently. They also have specials posted on the wall. Great location in Midtown Sacramento. Quietly tucked away vegetation and vegan restaurant. So many delicious dishes to choose from, I wanted to take home the mushroom calamari. Greeted immediately, there's an elevator for those who'd prefer to avoid the stairs. Advised by patrons exiting the meal was worth the stairs, and I wasn't disappointed. Beautiful plating, which was art itself, and fabulous art by a local artist on display. If that isn't enough, you can dine on the enclosed balcony to people watch or sun bask.

The cauliflower and fried mushroom calamari style, french fries, and gnocchi were really good! So much flavor and sauces to choose from. They also offer seasonal specials, which are always fun to try. The service is usually great, and the space is perfect for get-togethers or small events. I came here with friends during Memorial Day Weekend to enjoy some vegan eats. I previewed the menu before coming and was looking forward to trying the vegan burger. However, I must've overlooked when the lunch/dinner menu is available because upon arrival a bit before 2pm, we were informed we could only order off the brunch menu, as their regular menu doesn't start until 3pm. I was disappointed, as I was set on getting the savoury vegan burger. However, I opted for the veg griddle as a backup option. It was way too sweet. It honestly reminded me exactly of a McGriddle, so if you're into that, this might be your thing. I couldn't tell the dish was vegan at all. The faux meats and cheeses in my meal closely mimicked the "real" thing, so at least they've nailed down the ingredients.

A hidden plant-based gem above Thai Basil! I love this plant-based spot hidden away on the second floor of Midtown Sacramento. Parking: Difficult, limited street and metered parking. You have to look closely to find it because it sits quietly on the second floor directly above Thai Basil on J Street. You can take the slow elevator or use the stairs to reach a gorgeous, sunlit balcony and dining room filled with art from local creators. Service: A bit slow, but friendly. Space: Tiny and limited, but they maximize the space by fitting in a bar, art displays, indoor dining, and the balcony seating. I noticed the waitress constantly rearranging the table settings depending on the party size. One thing I did notice was that the wood floor in the balcony area squeaks pretty loudly whenever someone walks to or from their table, including the waitress coming in and out. Restroom: One tiny unisex restroom. Recommended: Savory crepe (chickpea, coconut turmeric), Breakfast burrito, Crispy Potato Taquitos, and Blue Butterfly Lemonade. Everything was surprisingly rich and had complex flavors. Definitely a fun little spot to discover if you enjoy plant-based food! read more
Came here to meet some good friend for brunch on a Sunday. Arrived right at 11 (when they opened). So we were seated quickly. I had the egg scramble. I asked for Jo onions and of course it had onions. They server was so confident that there wasn't any, so they brought it back. When I got it back. It appeared to have no onions. Then after a few bites. I bit into an onion. Thank goodness I my allergies are minimal. It could have gone all bad. They asked if I wanted to get a drink on the house, but I can only have so much coffee. I did try my fiends chicken and waffles. If we do come back. I'm definitely getting that. read more

My friend told me about this place. It's upstairs from Thai Basil, so I got a little confused with which door to use. Once I found the right door, I went up the stairs, and I was inside this beautiful space with lots of natural light from the windows. The all vegan brunch menu had tons of delicious looking options. I wanted a chocolate chip waffle, but I'm weird about gluten-free stuff (I usually don't care for it), so I decided on the biscuits and gravy instead since the biscuits weren't gluten free. I usually don't like impossible sausage, but the gravy was delicious and the biscuits were perfection. My partner got the breakfast sandwich that comes on a waffle, and it was super good too. If you know, you know! Veg Cafe is upstairs above Thai Basil, and it was such a pleasant experience. I came for lunch with a co-worker and we seated ourselves at a window table overlooking J Street. It was my first time visiting, and I opted for the chocolate mint expresso martini from the specials board to start. For lunch, I chose the pesto pasta. Everything that I ordered was beautifully presented and flavorful! Our server was prompt and checked in on us from time to time without being overbearing. The prices are reflective of the location, but overall, a good place to grab a plant-based lunch and catch up with a co-worker! read more

I sat by the window with a great view and nice music. The service was good and they shared the days specials. I ordered the fried mushrooms which were crispy and flavorful. I also ordered the special drink that was fruity and fun. I was a little disappointed with the stuffed pasta because it was not hot and they didn't have the pumpkin toffee pudding. This place needs more love from Sacramento, because the food here is sensational. Veg Café went fully plant-based in 2019, survived the pandemic, and continues to deliver flavor-packed dishes that rotate seasonally. It doesn't get more "farm-to-fork" than this. Recently I stopped by with a friend to experience the Winter Menu and we were both impressed. Every dish - from starter to dessert - was delicious. We couldn't even narrow down a favorite because everything we tried we enjoyed and would order again. I personally enjoy that Veg doesn't rely on using faux meats and truly sticks to keeping plants the focus. If you want to taste what plant-based should taste like, this is your place. Pro tip: Check the specials board for the latest and greatest! read more

My fiancé brought me here for my birthday dinner. This place is above Thai Basil - it's a cute little spot with some plants and sofas around :) Ambience is casual. We sat near the window and had a nice view of the street with trees. They have these cute spring themed cocktails. I got the Butterfly and Fiance got another drink I can't remember. We got the spring bruschetta and a side of Aaron's fries. The bruschetta was AMAZING and super fresh. My fiancé doesn't like asparagus but he was able to eat the bruschetta and wanted more. I got the spring primavera and he for the mayor burger. Everything was tasty and the food came out pretty fast. I'd recommend to non-vegetarians as well and would definitely come back again to try a different dish! read more

This restaurant was hard to find because it's on top of another restaurant, but when we walked it, it was soooo cute inside! It felt very warm, boho, and thrifty, in a good way. The food and drinks were delicious, being all veggie, it was just a little overpriced. The service was good. The staff in there were very friendly, explained the menu for first timers like us, but it was kind of slow. I don't know if there were only 1 or 2 people serving that morning, but the friendliness made up for the waiting time in between. Overall, would come back. read more
What a find this cafe was! My sister brought me here for lunch today and I loved everything about it. The ambience & decor is eclectic & charming. I loved sitting upstairs by the window with the sun beaming through. The chandeliers were a perfect touch. Our server was Sean and his personable manner and attentiveness were appreciated. An absolutely amazing vegan restaurant! The interior is very cute, considering how small the places they do have quite a bit of seating, and they do allow for reservations. We were seated very quickly, had someone come over and check on us for drinks, and then a few minutes later took our food order. Everything came out fairly quickly, and was served on cute/unique dishes. The chicken waffles was really good, though personally I would want to eat a lot of the components separately (just personal preference), and the biscuits and gravy was not at all what I expected it to be, but was absolutely delicious. It was wonderful to be able to go to a restaurant and eat anything. I wanted off the menu, without worry about cross-contamination and allergies. It should be noted that this restaurant is upstairs so you will need to climb a set of stairs to access the dining room, but they do have an elevator as well. We will definitely be back! read more

The location is great. It's right on J St right next to Rick's. It's on the second floor of a home that looks like it was converted into a restaurant. The flavor was surprisingly good. I was throughly impressed with the pizza. For being a vegetarian/vegan focused restaurant? The flavor of the food is really good. You almost can't taste the difference from "regular" food, or is sometimes better than it. The service was great. Our server came by multiple times to check up on us. They also provided us with recommendations for their menu being that it was our first time. The prices are on the steeper side. You can expect to walk out of here for around $40 for a meal for two making this a ($$$) for me. Bottom line/TLDR: great vegan food read more
