Well, I've heard nothing but rave reviews about 1837, and Pharaoh's eclectic vegan menu, so with my last vacation day, I thought my palate needed to be "The Judge" of all this Hype! Well, I drove down to 1837 Vegan, located at 1829 22nd street Sac, Ca and ordered the Jack Fruit Tacos, along with the Mac-N-Cheese, organic fries, and the oyster mushroom, all of which came with unique & delicious sauces... People, "The Hype" is legit, the food was delicious & cooked to perfection! As I sat down to eat all that I ordered, I said to myself, because I ordered so much I'd take the leftovers home. Well, the thought was admirable, but because I couldn't get enough I just kept eating until it was all gone... The owner and all who work with him are super people, and great ambassadors for their restaurant and this city, so let's support them....

I love love love everything about this place! They always have the nicest people answering the phone and taking orders in person. The food is delicious! It's amazing how much flavor they pack into it. I highly recommend!!!

This is some of the most flavorful vegan food around! The jackfruit tacos can't be beat and the bbq sauce is out of this world. It's an awesome local popup that you shouldn't miss out on. Follow them on IG to see where they're popping up next! @1837vegan

If you're a fan of eastern cuisine, this Tibetan lunch spot is a must-visit…read more The Meal: it's really only one thing to choose. I expect they might make a different meal every day and you just go in and order large or small. Those are your choices. They don't have any spicy condiments and I guess that's pretty normal for Himalayan food. They did slice up a jalapeño for me so I was able to get that capsaicin rush that I demand. If you like spicy stuff, I might recommend bringing your own hot sauces. However, I had no idea I was stopping for lunch and I forgot to bring such things (I clear out any food from my car every night due to the bear situation where I live) So, I just bought one of their five dollar hot chili concoctions that appears to have primarily Cayenne peppers and oil in it. There's no ingredients listed on the bottle so I can't tell for sure. This was a great find because one of the few places I've been missing in the Sierra that we had in Santa Cruz is Tibetan Momos. Sadly, these folks did not have any Momo's, ( Himalayan versions of Gyoza ) They do have a large TV on the screen that I didn't notice at first, and it was playing scenes from Tibet almost like a screensaver. But it had photos of lambs and other farm animals. Very cute. Definitely this contributed to the ambience. It'd be cool if they have door seating, but I didn't notice anything of the sort. Anyway, I'm coming back to Sacramento tomorrow so I'll probably eat here again and find out if they do change up the meals. But all in all this was a good experience. I suppose I can check this website too to find out more. https://www.himalayavegan.com

So nice to find a vegan restaurant not too far from home…read more I loved the easy menu style. Basically: do you want a small plate or a big plate? Soup? Dessert? Simple. Best part is all the food is delicious. We started with 2 bowls of mung bean w/ mixed vegetable soup. It was a true creamy soup, so I put my spoon down and drank it out of the bowl. Sorry manners? Then ordered 2 large plates of short grain brown rice, kidney beans w/ onion & garlic, baked yam, kabocha & butternut squash w/ garlic, collard greens and kale w/ shiitake mushroom sauce, and a mixed salad w/ basil lemon & agave dressing. Everything was very good. My favorites were the kidney beans, the yam combo, and the greens with the basil lemon dressing. We also got a Bahn Mi. Loved that it was really full. I don't like a skimpy Bahn Mi. For dessert, we took home slices of Coconut Pie, Chocolate Pie, Key Lime Pie, and the Himalaya Pie (layered with key lime, strawberries, coconut, and drizzled chocolate). My favorite was the Key Lime Pie -- tart and creamy. Then the Chocolate Pie, which was soft and indulgent. The Himalaya Pie was fun because every bite tasted a little different. The only one I didn't care for was the Coconut Pie because the texture was a bit hard from the coconut fat. One of the best things about this place is that they change things up based on what's seasonal. We travel with our dogs and called ahead to ask about outdoor seating. They don't officially have patio seating, but they kindly pulled a table outside for the two of us. They accommodate well-behaved dogs, and there was a great overhang for shade. We felt very comfortable sitting out there, so don't be shy about asking if you're traveling with your pooches. I briefly saw the inside and it was neat and well organized. I also saw someone bring their own container, which I loved. Definitely a spot we'll return to.

A hidden plant-based gem above Thai Basil!…read more I love this plant-based spot hidden away on the second floor of Midtown Sacramento. Parking: Difficult, limited street and metered parking. You have to look closely to find it because it sits quietly on the second floor directly above Thai Basil on J Street. You can take the slow elevator or use the stairs to reach a gorgeous, sunlit balcony and dining room filled with art from local creators. Service: A bit slow, but friendly. Space: Tiny and limited, but they maximize the space by fitting in a bar, art displays, indoor dining, and the balcony seating. I noticed the waitress constantly rearranging the table settings depending on the party size. One thing I did notice was that the wood floor in the balcony area squeaks pretty loudly whenever someone walks to or from their table, including the waitress coming in and out. Restroom: One tiny unisex restroom. Recommended: Savory crepe (chickpea, coconut turmeric), Breakfast burrito, Crispy Potato Taquitos, and Blue Butterfly Lemonade. Everything was surprisingly rich and had complex flavors. Definitely a fun little spot to discover if you enjoy plant-based food!

Mother does just that with every menu item. The hardest part for me was choosing what to order, so naturally I over-ordered so I could sample multiple things and have plenty of leftovers for later. The team here was really nice and welcoming and the restaurant is very cute. They have seating for parties of various sizes and some outdoor seating as well. I stopped in at around 1pm on a Friday and it was busy with dine in and take out orders, but not overwhelmingly busy and I grabbed a seat easily. I ended up asking for recommendations and ordered the oyster mushroom Po'boy ($18), the chile verde ($20) and added a fried egg (+3), as well as the butternut squash mac and cheese ($11). While all of the dishes are vegetarian, many of the dishes can be prepared vegan but they don't use any animal product alternatives (like faux meats) instead they let the veggies shine. The Oyster Po'boy was on a soft and fluffy bun and had crispy, delicious fried mushrooms on it with some house made pickles and house made chips. The chips were amazing, so crunchy with the perfect amount of salt. Overall I can see why this is a customer favorite item. The Chile Verde was so flavorful and bright and came with some salad and avocado on the side. It's a filling dish and I definitely recommend the fried egg to bring the whole dish together. The Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese has crispies on top made with the parmesan bread crumbs and is so creamy, flavorful and indulgent. I will be craving this mac and cheese again soon. I'm so glad they moved to this location in Midtown (on K between 23&24) since I'm in this area so often. I'm so excited to try more items from the menu and check in for seasonal items.

My boyfriend is a vegetarian and was so happy to find this gem of a Vietnamese vegetarian…read morerestaurant. I'm a meat lover who can enjoy the health benefits of eating more vegetables. The food was pretty good. I really enjoy how fresh their spring rolls appetizers are. I recommend the one with shredded taro, sweet potato, and tofu! The Bun Bo Hue style dish was like a 4/5 just because the soup was very toned down compared to Bun Bo Hue broths that I'm used to (which are prepared with meat, but are also just much more spicy and flavorful with a strong lemongrass kick). This broth flavor was very muted flavor-wise. It's probably healthier than the meat-version since it's very light and not fatty and heavy like the broth I am used to, so that's a plus. I really like the selection of tofu and soy proteins (a ham and beef vegetarian alternative) included. The soup also has delicious mushrooms. However, what brings my rating down is the ambience. The first time I came here to dine-in back in winter was fine. But for whatever reason, I had such a strange experience this second time around and had to share it so that hopefully no one else has to experience this. The music is the same song on endless loop, which can feel a bit odd. But what was odder was the fact that the restaurant seemed to be a one woman show. The server was taking care of my table (my boyfriend and I were the ONLY people dining in the restaurant), fulfilling the online orders and checking those people out upon arrival, and dealing with the unhoused individuals who were constantly coming by the restaurant for free water... in addition to watching her dog? The service was basically non-existent because the dog kept running out of the restaurant and the server was constantly running after it. I usually base good service on how frequently our water cups are refilled. During the whole hour we were there, both my partner and I had finished our water cups (I finished my water within the first 20 minutes of arrival) and not once were they refilled. It was impossible to even ask for a refill. It took us a solid 10 minutes after finishing our food to get a to-go container and a check. It was hard for the server to be attentive when so much was going on, but it was just not good service-wise. It was honestly such a strange experience, and I will not be coming back to dine-in.

Each sandwich was really tasty, but the Big Zac w/ the beefy patties really stood out to me because of how much it tasted like meat! Admittedly, I haven't eaten a true beef burger in probably 5 years, but I was really surprised how meaty this one tasted. My boyfriend, who still eats beef burgers, agreed that it was really good. For the western burger I ordered the hippie patty, and it was a pretty standard veggie patty. The bacon was also probably what you'd expect for plant-based bacon -- not truly an imitation in terms of texture but a decent replica of flavor. The chicken sandwich had a really nice crunch to the exterior, and the protein was decently flavorful. The milkshake was also delicious (hard to go wrong there).
