To preface... as someone who grew up in Mexico, vecino hits like food from home every time. I have been six times now and not once have I been disappointed. I have been trying Mexican restaurants all over the U.S. and no where compares to vecino and to think I found my favorite in Detroit amazes me. It truly is worth every penny. For what to order: All their appetizers are great. We usually switch it up and are satisfied with each one that we've ordered. The Totopos with salsa are a must and their guac is great as well. For mains- the asada del día is our go to. It is always cooked to perfection and comes with fresh tortillas. And it is hard for me to come by a tortilla in the U.S. that I enjoy. But here, they are excellent. They import their corn from Mexico and you can tell. This is served with bone marrow and some garlic onion spread that goes great on the taco. For dessert- their tres leches is amazing. The coconut cream pairs so well with the cake. I could eat like 10 of them. As if it's not obvious at this point vecino is my favorite restaurant in Detroit and one of my tops in the world. Fun, new, very hip and trendy spot! It was super loud and had a ton of mood lighting as the evening went on, but it was hard for my friends and I to actually engage in conversation given the volume of chatter and music and just overall environment in the restaurant, which was noticeably a struggle! I felt a little out of place being here given just how trendy and super party-like atmosphere it all was haha! And in the months since I've come here, it remains a super popular spot to go to if you're looking for that extremely lively atmosphere! None of this takes away from the quality of their delicious food! We had incredible dishes and they clearly take a lot of pride in sourcing intentionally all their ingredients for their food, and the waitstaff did their best to intro us to everything, despite how overstimulatingly loud the environment was, so I only came away from each presentation with about half the information they wanted to convey. But all in all, the food was good across the board, and we tried a ton of different dishes. There weren't any that were overwhelming showstoppers that made me want to come back here again and again to try the rest of the menu though, so I left Vecino knowing that I wasn't going to return anytime soon. There's so much to love about Vecino but you'll pay a pretty penny for it. However, I hope this means though that their team is paid well and that they have a sustainable model as I'd love to see them thrive! Onto our meal experience: We made rezzies via RESY, which was seamless and quick. Street parking was pretty easy. Upon arrival, we were seated promptly and it was fairly empty at 4:30pm but pretty packed when we were leaving, so make a reservation! Our server was fantastic - so knowledgeable and friendly! We started with their fantastic cocktails - I loved my Tomatini (blanco, cocchi, tomatillo, thyme, bay leaft, tomolive, chilo oil). It was like a spicy tomatillo marg! Delish. For food, we had: *Totopos & Salsas - this in itself cost $14 which is kind of wild BUT Vecino has their own masa program which was great to try some interesting heirloom varieties. Also, there was definitely no pico de gallo up in here. The salsa trio was salsa macha, salsa cascabel and salsa cruda. All were stunning! We took them home with us! *CHICHARRONES DE PULPO: perfectly cooked so the octopus was tender and had a wonderful texture. It was kind of breaded-ish and there was a puree and potatoes. Just a wonderful dish in general! *TUNA TOSTADA (tuna, chipotle aioli, leeks, avocado) - flavors were GREAT on this. The tuna was fresh - no hint of fishiness at all. It's a pretty small portion so I could probably eat it myself BUT we just cut it in half and split it between the 2 of us. *DUCK ENCHILADAS - let me preface that I'm not usually an enchiladas gal. BUT when they make the corn tortillas in house, it's so dang good. This was flavorful but again pretty small portion (just 2 enchiladas). Beautiful plating though. *BUÑUELO (Oaxacan corn chocolate, mint basil ice cream) - our server recommended this one and she didn't lead us astray! A wonderful dining experience with a open pleasurable atmosphere. Gracious and friendly staff perform service beyond the norm found in most modern establishments, efficient but not overbearing or annoying. The food is truly amazing, wonderful presented with flavors that excite and satisfy. I wanted to eat everything on the menu. Visited this restaurant over the weekend with some friends and it was such a wonderful dinning experience. The restaurant is beautiful inside with cool vibes and great lighting and comfortable seating throughout. It was a last minute decision to do dinner here the restaurant was very accommodating getting us in for a last min reservation. The menu was definitely not what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant and was intimidating on what to order. We were very lucky to have a server who had excellent insight on the menu items and guided us in the right direction. The food was excellent but I would say for the price the portion size of some of the items was disappointing. I would go again but with the knowledge of exactly what to order. Came here for a birthday dinner and had a really excellent time. We got the salsas to start and let me say the chips are truly delicious. The peanut oil salsa, while it may sound weird, is incredibly flavorful and we could not stop eating this. We went with the lamb shank masa, the duck enchiladas, and then the half chicken as our entree dish to share. Everything was wildly flavorful and delicious. Service was really great. Cocktails were a little lacking for us in flavor (Cantarito for me), but the food was stellar. Will have to come back and try more of the offerings! read more

Really nice spot, but I just can't justify the prices... I think everything we ordered tasted good... the crudo, the tostada, pollo, pescado etc. there weren't any bad dishes... but I wasn't blown away nor full. The Tres Leches cake was in a raspberry milk, that was different and enjoyable. I wanted so badly to really love this place but I was just...underwhelmed. Maybe my expectations were too high based on feedback I had received from other people that had been there but I was wasn't impressed, especially since it's on the costlier side. Nothing was bad. It just wasn't very memorable and I don't think the cost justifies the experience. The restaurant itself is cute and cozy, definitely giving date night vibes and the bathroom were cute as well. Parking was also a hassle since there isn't a dedicated lot or place to park. It's a really busy area and you have to fend for yourself with street parking. I definitely had to drive around for several rounds before I found someone coming out and could snag a spot a couple of blocks away. This was my favorite new restaurant of 2025 in Detroit (I think also Restaurant of the Year, if I'm not mistaken). It's got an amazing interior and ambiance, incredible service, and the food is inspired and innovative. It's halal friendly, which is an added bonus. It's definitely meant for sharing, so I would recommend coming with a small group of friends to order a bunch of menu items. We ordered across the menu and shared everything as a group of 4 people. Drinks are super interesting (I really love the "spicy margarita" which is called Picosa Verde), the El Clásico was pretty good but tasted too lime-y. You can order food at the bar also so it's an option if it's all booked up! The first time we went, we had the Sikil Pak which was only okay, it was a complex flavored dip maybe too salty (& they don't give you enough crudite) but they are happy to pack any leftovers, Tuna Tostada= delicious and the Fish=a favorite! So delicious! It's market price so yes, it can be $$$$ but you can't find anything in Michigan like it! I love Vecino! Service is excellent and the ambiance is great! This place does not care about you or any other diner's review. ..Vecino means "neighbor" in English: in this case, It reminds me of age-old acrimony between neighbors where money matters more than people: No warmth. No Parking. We spent $280 for 3 ppl and left unequivocally dissatisfied with service, food, and value. Never coming back. Waiter "Violeta" grimaced at all moments coming to the table. Unhappy with 0 smiles to give. The experience for us was hostile and unfriendly. My work colleagues also felt the service was subpar; unlike other reviews that describe servers explaining dishes, Violeta seemed to throw her hands up when we asked for suggestions. She instead pushed and repeatedly insisted we hadn't ordered enough food as if her rent depended on it. We asked if we could start with 5+ plates for three people before we ordered more (at about $30/plate). She pushed it "wasn't enough food" and said she would get in trouble with the kitchen if she didn't put the full order in at first... We continued to go back and forth until we all felt uncomfortable and one of our party left the table to escape the pressure. The most basic of introductions: chips and the salsa came over 20 minutes after we ordered them, only after we inquired about what was going on, and only minutes before the expensive appetizers arrived. I agree with reviewers who felt their money didn't stack up to their expectations. $30 for an unimaginative and wet tuna tostada. Another $30 for a two mole dish with 2 quarters of sweet potatoes and another 2/4 of parsnip. Not even a full root vegetable. The agucahile and lamb shank were beyond reproach. I wish they set the standard for price/value. Still... Violeta's "favorite" hibiscus margarita (another upsell) disappointed: two of the three of us left our unfished our $20 cocktails at the table. This place is all fuss and no heart. It doesn't belong in Detroit. Bathroom was so very dark (little light, black toilet, black sink, few lights leading to door) that should make anyone with mobility issues worry. This is a beautiful restaurant with a great vibe. I especially appreciate the curtained vestibule to keep the cold out. A very cozy touch. The service was absolutely phenomenal - they take your coat when you arrive and hang it up for you, the seating is very comfy, the lighting and candles are really pretty, and our server was excellent. She described menu items knowledgeably and confidently recommended great cocktails and dishes. They've got the details right here, down to the exceptional water glasses. To drink, I ordered one of their non alcoholic options, and I'm so glad they have many selections to choose from. Our server was great at explaining the flavors of several to us, and I went with the phony negroni which is a sweet, red, pretty cocktail that is prepackaged. My friend ordered one of their regular cocktails, just without alcohol, and she loved it. It was made with lots of fresh citrus juice, a house made Squirt, and a spicy gummy candy stick. A very fun cocktail I will get next time. As for food, we shared the octopus dish, 2 of us ordered the duck enchiladas, and one of us ordered the talyuda with chorizo. Our favorites were definitely the enchiladas, the chorizo on the talyuda was amazing, and the octopus was cooked very well - it was tender - and we really liked the pineapple, but it needed a little salt and the spice rub was a little on the bitter side. A beautiful dish, but I think I'd try the venduras en mole next time. Overall, a good meal; the masa is the star of the show here, especially in the enchiladas. The corn has the most amazing flavor that really shines just as much as all the other delicious ingredients with it. The tomatillo sauce was absolutely delicious - smooth, almost creamy; so tangy and well-seasoned. I'd definitely return just for those enchiladas. The chorizo was also memorable - it had such a great texture and flavor. Overall, the menu is a bit sparse, but everything on it sounds interesting. The prices are also fairly high, even for downtown, but the flavors are elevated, the plating is beautiful, and the service is top-notch. Creative adult beverages and non alcoholic libations to accompany our meal or to enjoy all on their own. I had the chicken with roasted carrots, fresh micro greens with a tomatillo salsa that added just the right amount of flavor without the heat. Everything had great flavor and the chicken was perfectly cooked. My companions had the T-bone and the ribeye which they devoured with a side of rice. I recently went to Oaxaca, Mexico for the Día de Muertos and I experienced some really upscale Mexican restaurants so when I researched the menu I expected the same. The vibe, the decor and ambiance was on point. Location is pretty tucked away on 3rd Avenue. The food was good but definitely overpriced. I ordered the tuna tostada, a mushroom dish and whole Brazino. I don't mind spending money on food when the portion sizes are worth it but not here. Additionally, I will admit, I did not have a reservation but I was seated rather swiftly and FORGOTTEN about. My service was extremely slow. I sat on the patio which is beautiful in the summer however I do believe they are short staffed. I would only go back for bar food to be honest. read more

Four of us went for dinner. We had cocktails, appetizers, main dishes, desserts, and wine. Here's how we rated: Salsa trio OK, chips very good, guacamole excellent, green salad excellent, cauliflower good, duck enchiladas excellent, tuna tostada not good and very small, hamachi crudo not good and also very small, tres leches excellent, chocolate mousse OK, pescado red snapper OK, Mexican wine good, cocktails OK. Biggest issue for us was pricing for the portion sizing. We ordered the large red snapper at about 1 1/2 lbs - it was $102. The crudo was $26, the salad $23, cauliflower $23. Mexican white wine - $19. Given the portion size, they are overpriced by 20-25% in our opinion. Seemed like they had a lot of staff for their size. Decor was OK, many have commented on dark bathrooms. Noise level is moderately high when filled up, but we could still talk. Given all the rave reviews here, our expectations were higher for this restaurant and we were somewhat disappointed. read more

Vecino is an upscale Mexican restaurant. I love the concept, Mexican is often relegated to cheap Tex-Mex, with a side of refried beans, this shows a refined side. Overall, we enjoyed the experience. I do think the price point was a bit high for the plate, as others have mentioned. The interior is lovely, low lighting, cool cider blocks behind the bar, and actual candles. The service was good, where it was great was the pacing. My friend and I split several plates and the flow they came to our table at was perfect. The other area that shone was the drink service. They had interesting cocktails as well as non alcoholic cocktails, and a good Mexican wine list. I have no familiarity with Mexican wine, the red blend we tried was fantastic, so apparently I need to learn more. The high point of the meal was the tuna tostada. I would come back just for this. All the ingredients were balanced, just perfect on the spice, and a good blend of textures. The next, the pork belly tamale, was not. It was very disappointing. The tamale was too dense, and there was barely any filling. Without the sauce it was dry. I've had fantastic tamales road side, for this price I expected much better. The last, the duck enchilada was good as well. I do not see duck much, and thought it was interesting. Orders go in all at once (recommended) and they will course things out accordingly. - Chips & Salsa. This seemed table stakes to try, and was very good! The house made chips were nicer than the usuals, and the trio of salsas tasted very freshly made with good ingredients. The last was most unique; the green was probably my favorite. - Esquites (corn) with asparagus, parmigiano foam, piquin. Serving was larger than expected! Good but I wouldn't necessarily say a must. - Molote! I liked these! Actually think an order of these allows you to try to green and red salsas nicely and may not need both chips & salsa and this dish! Especially if trying not to over-order :). - Bok Choy. A little unexpected with the Mexican dishes and flavors. This came with miso/szechuan/peanut flavor notes. - Pescado whole fish with salsas, a nice bright salad, and fresh homemade tortillas. Delish and the highlight of the meal by far! This is a large portion and MP (ours was $79 the day we went). - Patatas Bravas. A saucier version! I would say these are skippable, especially with all the good housemade tortilla and chips. Also really loved the dessert we got - the Pan de Elote with mezcal ice cream, cajeta, peanuts. We've eaten at fantastic restaurants around the world, and this incredible place stands out among some of the best we've tried. The staff were some of the most attentive we've ever had (they worked hard to accommodate dietary needs including a need to schedule the dishes to come farther apart due to my past bariatric surgery), and they made the entire small plate menu selection process beautifully conversational. We enjoyed the tuna tostada, the carrot tingas, pulpo al pastor (octopus grilled with pineapple), betabel (beat/goat cheese salad), the broccolini with green mole sauce, and a raspberry / thyme sorbet with a rosemary crumble on top. The tuna tostada took first place as the absolute star of the show - perfectly thin, tender, sashimi-style tuna on a homemade tostada with unique fixings (crispy fried onions, etc). The green mole on the broccolini was like no mole I've ever tasted before. The rest of the meal was remarkable, and the savory and sweet / light sorbet was the perfect finish to our meal. If you come to or live in Detroit, I can't see considering your dining adventures "complete" without making a reservation to eat at Vecino. read more

Long story short: this is probably the best high-end Mexican restaurant in metro Detroit, and maybe one of the top 5-10 restaurants in the entire area. Long story long: I'm very picky with Mexican food (I was born and raised there), so I decided to try a bit of everything with a group of friends. As far as I can remember, we tried: - Enchiladas: the duck confit was delicious - Tlayuda: probably the best dish of the night, though quite messy - Huarache de cochinita: decent, but I wish the cochinita would've been juicier - Nopales: pretty solid - Salsas: all of them were very good and a couple of them actually had some nice heat - Frijoles charros: yummy and very much reminded me of home - Guacamole: really good but pricey, though it was actually a decent portion - Pan de elote (dessert): decent, but probably my least favorite dish of the evening We also tried a bunch of cocktails and all of them were good -- my favorite was probably the Picosa Verde, though the Matcha Sour was super interesting. I also appreciated that their wine list actually contained Mexican wines -- the Bajío sparkling was a nice break from cocktails. Ambiance was great. Beautiful decor, good volume, and nice sexy, dark but not TOO dark lighting. If there's one thing to maybe nitpick a bit, it's the service. We had a reservation but our table was nowhere near ready, so we had to wait for about 30 mins. on their patio, which is at least nice and ample. Several other people also seemed to be waiting for a long time despite having a reservation. Our server also wasn't super knowledgeable on the wine list. Dishes seemed to arrive at random times and their pacing was a bit off for a place this expensive. But, it wasn't bad enough IMHO to drop a star. Let me start this off right: the service was fantastic. The staff deserves a raise -- they're the only reason this isn't a one-star review. Now, the restaurant itself? Let's just say it's giving "fine dining prices, mall food court execution." I ordered duck breast and got chicken. The server told me they were out of duck -- which, okay, things happen. But it's a little like ordering a Porsche and getting handed the keys to a Prius. Still, I was willing to let that slide... until the cocktails came out. I ordered a mezcal cocktail; my girlfriend ordered the same one, minus the alcohol. When the bill came, both drinks were the same price. I asked, and apparently "non-alcoholic mezcal" costs the same as the real deal. At that point, I realized I'd paid full price for a vibe and a placebo. Ambiance? 10/10. Prices? My buddy and I made a reservation here on a Thursday night after Vecino had been recommended to us a few times. We decided to set at the bar and we were graciously greeted by Alexa, working at the bar! She was extremely knowledgeable about both the food and the cocktails. The drinks were awesome and the food was unique and very good. The vibe of the restaurant is a huge catch. Dimly lit, candles all over, and an open fire in the kitchen which can be seen right when you enter the restaurant. Our favorite item was the pescado (pictured) which was a whole fish served open face with one salsa on one side and another type of salsa on the other side. So good!! Must order if you visit. Some other items we loved were the duck salsa enchiladas and the molote. Huge shout out to Alexa. She was awesome. We engaged in conversation all night and ended up staying much longer than expected. I've been curious about Vecino since I heard about them, so I was very excited to have the opportunity to try their food while I was in the area. It was such a great experience, from the giant wood front door, to the Palo Santo burning at the hostess table, the wonderful service by the entire team, and of course, the amazing flavors of every dish we had. They thought about every aspect of the dining experience, and I appreciate that so much. Although the menu isn't labeled, our server recommended many options that were gluten free, including their special dessert. Coming to this place is not just about eating--it's about living the experience. My wife and I traveled from Ohio to try this spot based on friends' recommendations. We had a date night planned, and we couldn't have chosen better. The comments we had heard didn't do it justice. Even though the menu is on the smaller side, the culinary offering feels complete, with flavors that are fresh and homemade. I highly recommend making a reservation 24 hours in advance. We didn't, and decided to take the risk of waiting for a table. The host was very kind and accommodating. While we waited on the back patio (which is meant just for drinks), someone came out to check on us. She must have sensed that we had traveled a long way, because she was so kind--she offered us guacamole to take the edge off our hunger, and we ordered two mezcal cocktails. The mango with chile one absolutely blew my mind--delicious! We were also served their salsa flight, which was perfectly balanced. But above all, the service is what stands out the most. They make you feel like a regular guest--almost as if you were part of their everyday circle. At the end, we found out that the woman who came to check on us was actually one of the owners, Adriana.
