He told me that the reason he came was because he is a man of his word. I was impressed because Alex is very young and mature for his age. This is rare today in America. We are in the midst of a tenant turnover (not the best time as a landlord), and having the home sit idle for any amount of time seems like an eternity. But that's not how it is with John. Two days after the tenants moved out, John supported us by conducting a walkthrough of the place, highlighting areas that needed some attention, and got to work. He brought his mower and lawn edger to do some landscaping, flushed the water heater, fixed the front door lock (after troubleshooting it live with a support agent), tightened up some loose cabinetry in the kitchen and bedrooms, and even cleared out the garage of dust and loose debris. John is incredibly thoughtful and is a great communicator - thorough and complete. He actually takes care of the home like it is his own, and honestly, that level of detail and support helps me ensure that I can stand behind the value & security of home when it goes back on the market for the next tenants. When they showed up they said, "Nope there's a piece of wood trim in the way, and we can't," and they left. Literally that's all they said... and left. So I begin the process of calling around to plumbers and handy men. John is the only person that could squeeze our small project in, and when I say "squeeze" I mean it. He (like many others) was booked solid, BUT he went SO far out of his way to make it to our house. Even hanging around for a while in our part of town when I missed his call and it took me over an hour to get back to him. I couldn't believe it. He's clearly not short on business, so the fact that he was concerned enough about his costumer to just wait around and see if we would get back to him boggles my mind. He had SURGERY scheduled for the next day, and was so concerned that if he didn't get to our call that night he wouldn't be able to for some time. Again, he's not short on work, he just cared that it would be a nightmare for us to go that long w/o a dishwasher. Now you would think, busy as he is, with surgery the next day, and late in reply to him as we were, that he would rush the job. NOPE. He stayed here for hours making sure he did the job right, and he was a very pleasant "house guest" as well. Funny stories about his work. Tips about other "jobs" around our house that came up in conversation, and actually tips too, not just fishing for more work: "Oh yeah you could do that yourself, you just need XYZ and to watch out for these things." The dishwasher is installed, run beautifully, and the price was absolutely fair and appropriate. I probably would have paid more. Especially considering how long he was here, and that our instillation did have a few unexpected issues. Again you might worry with other companies, that all the polite conversation it racking up the price, but no way, not with John. Read the name of this business and believe it. You will love this handyman service.

Customers Beware! Property Damage. False Invoices. First Time Workers. Hiring HandyMatt does not…read moremean you get Matt himself as his website and texts suggest. Instead, I received someone who was working their first day ever for Matt with no supervision or heads up. We had a fairly simple workload to get completed. Towel Rods to install and twenty or so art/pictures to be hung. After five hours (5!) we had three towel rods installed and 3 pictures hung. Barely one item per hour. I was texting Matt all throughout the day that the pace of his worker was far too slow. He acknowledged the pace was unacceptable and agreed to comp three hours from the morning to get a more appropriate pace of work to price and to allow the worker to finish the work with feedback his pace had to improve. At the end of the day the worker then spilled paint all over our brand new wood floors in the nursery and onto a Lola blanket that thankfully saved our nursery rocker from being destroyed. He got it cleaned up better than I could have expected, but that was an extra hour at bedtime with babies crying and a room smelling of strong acetone to get things back to "normal". After the fact, I never received an apology from Matt. I was sent repeated texts and emails about paying his invoice. I had provided a link to the blanket ruined which he did not properly deduct the replacement cost from the invoice. He also sent through the invoice with less hours removed than agreed to and said he had "re-assessed" what he thought was fair. That his work speed went up after my complaints so that should have somehow forgiven the snail pace to start the day that was then capped by damage to our property. Overall, the one and only redeeming quality was that the worker was kind and his craftsmanship was good. We let him keep working because his work and presence was not an issue, but his speed and quality for the hourly rate were not at all in alignment. $110/hour is a premium rate for a handyman which means a premium experience. Premium quality and premium efficiency. I made it very known he could continue working but only if his speed was more appropriate or the rate was reduced to match his performance. I left offended by all of my experiences with the person that has their name on the business. Attempting to re-negotiate an agreed upon reduced rate AFTER damage in my home occurred is a bold move to maintain a reputable business. I let Matt know multiple times I would be letting my experience go public with a review and anyone who is considering hiring HandyMatt should really think twice before proceeding.

Our experience with Storey Construction was absolutely HORRIBLE....a never-ending nightmare of…read moreincompetence. They constantly made mistakes that they then charged us to repair. They misrepresented their professionalism and abilities and then fraudulently charged us when we posted a truthful review on this website. The photos speak for themselves. We met with John and Ty many times at our home and at their flooring store regarding projects at our home. Ty the owner of Storey Construction offered to not send fraudulent charges he invoiced us months after we parted ways if we pulled down our review and signed a non-disclosure agreement. Seriously has to be one of the worst contractors in Austin. They talk down to the employees and bad mouth them on a daily basis. They yelled at us when expensive mistakes were made because "they didn't know what was going on." Since they are talking a 20% cut of your whole project they should know what's going on, but they don't and they blame the client's for being "difficult" when they can't open the new front door their guys installed. (Oh, and their guys installed it while gouging our new hardwood floor...repair was offered but we wanted nothing more to do with these amateurs.) Do yourself a favor and find another contractor; this one forces unhappy clients to sign NDAs and offers financial incentives to clients who will leave good reviews. This is not about money...I posted a 2-star review on June 1st, 2017, 3 weeks later we were fraudulently billed $1,100. When Ty was contacted via email about the bogus charges he would only speak over the phone and said the charges were generated 8 weeks after our final payment because of my Yelp review posted on June 1st. I have learned Yelp has no dedicated department to field intimidation threats from business owners. My husband was told by Ty the charges would "go away" if we pulled down the reviews and signed a non-disclosure agreement. The charges were for $1,100 we paid Ty's businesses close to $50,000 in total. We also have the final statement which shows they removed the $1,100 charge because it was bogus. Here's what happened, we ordered 5 new doors for install, 3 wood, 2 fiberglass. I wanted to order them pre-painted but was told by Ty and John unfinished was the way to go. They swore their guys were master painters and that the price would be cheaper as it would be a flat rate rather than hourly. We paid their flat rate in full before the doors even arrived. Then on the final bill they tried to charge us for 10 or 18 extra hours of work for the painting of the doors. That was never agreed to, there was never any change order sent and we proved the painting charges were included in the previous bill so the new charge was removed. Then we received a bill for the amount that they removed from our final bill in April on June 22nd. We sent Storey Construction a Certified Letter concerning our dispute with the bill. We also filed a complaint with the Austin Better Business Bureau to which they never responded but is on file for the next 3 years. There we have evidence to our claim. Instead of responding to our request to proof these charges were legitimate Ty sent the bill to collections in early July. Our only request in our BBB complaint was for the fraudulent charges to be vacated and for a written apology for our atrocious treatment. The mistakes to our home were ongoing to the point we mutually made a decision to part ways because their sub-contractors were too incompetent to complete the job without further damage. If you like being berated for requesting that the job is done right then this is the contractor for you. When John told his guys to skip the step of installing a door frame before installing the base boards; I waited for John to leave and instructed them not to install the base boards and I texted John a little later that I requested they not install the base boards yet. John drove back to my home to yell at me for being "difficult" before recognizing I was right. John was also the person who happily accepted two new fiberglass doors with the wrong in-swing. I was the one to catch that they both had wrong in-swings. I can't even list all of the mistakes we had to deal with but the worst is being told they'll "fix it." Your told you won't be charged more, but you will...they don't distinguish between the hours they work messing up something and the hours they work messing it up again. You'll end up paying at least 3 times when you have to hirer a real professional like we did to fix what their team did the first 2 trys. I have no doubt some customers had much experiences than we did, but I believe that far too many other Storey Construction customers have been silenced by NDAs that were signed to take care of bogus charges. That is how Ty Storey claimed to us "they take care of bad reviews."

They added on 400 square feet of…read morespace (an office, expanded living room, and covered back patio) and updated the existing house with new floors, ceilings, dry wall, skylights, lighting, doors, and hardware, AND worked with UB Kitchens to put together a spectacular new kitchen for us. Our Project Manager, Jess Jackson, and the rest of the Catalyst team went above and beyond for us. This huge project was completed on time and far exceeded our expectations. All of the subcontractors did beautiful work and kept the job site clean and well organized. Nate and Jess posted detailed photos and updates to our Buildertrend site throughout the project, which made it so easy to be kept in the loop while living off-site. Jess helped us through all of the many decisions that had to be made along the way--she was an invaluable resource and looked out for us every step of the way. Jason Box, the owner, was also wonderful and runs an honest and transparent business. We are so grateful to have found them and give them our highest recommendation. They are a highly knowledgeable and skilled team doing excellent work efficiently.
