Would I hire them again for a project- yes, absolutely. good things- They did a great job communicating overall and were easy to converse with. Jorge is able to deal with people directly, and this can work if you are a non-general contractor/homeowner. The quality of the work was overall very good/thoughtful/economical. they have real experience that can head off issues with inspections, cost problems, and general best-practices. They stayed on schedule for the most part and stayed flexible as other trades were working around them. it is important to stay actively engaged so you can be sure you understand their needs and communicate whatever else is going on around them. suggestions- We developed a written scope of work with assumptions, work area/task descriptions and general details. i would say this was extremely helpful for both of us to set a fair price, schedule and expectations. i suggest anyone hiring ZC do this. ZC did not initially send a detailed scoping document. I suggest anyone hiring ZC do this or at least work it out carefully with ZC. We purchased our own materials and that worked out pretty well. ZC did a better job than i did in estimating materials so i suggest sticking with their estimate vs figuring on your own. you might have some overage, but it will save back-forth. ZC lost a star because of close-out. i'd say most of the scope was complete as agreed but there were a few messy bits and expectations that could have been clearer. I suggest pausing toward the end of a job with ZC and developing a clear list of final items rather than relying on a string of conversations. Obviously things change as you go and we added cost/time here and there. Calculating this got pretty muddy in the end so it was hard to rationalize the added cost proposed by ZC. that said, it wasn't egregious, but more back-ups would be helpful. unknowns- There was very little fine woodworking/trim/etc in this scope. I don't have an idea of how well ZC would do with this type of thing. I'd say their experience mostly is framing/siding/decks, etc. This is a family business and Jorge is a terrific Austin story. I would encourage anyone to give him a shot.

After having my foundation fixed I had them repaired the brick on the side of my home that had along crack in it. Cleaned up the cracks and recoated the skirting. They did two plumbing jobs for me. One was correcting the poor work another local plumbing company did a year before. They did an awsome job replacing my front entry door with a new one that required a lot of extra work. They added concrete to extend the floor for the door to sit on. Finally they replaced all the rotten trim on my home around the windows and corners joints on my home. I plan on hiring them back to do the paint and many more jobs in the future.

We worked with local, family-owned CG&S on an exterior renovation - updating our 1940s home to…read moreCraftsman style. Our home had no original details, but did have a lot of the original exterior materials. The team had to meticulously remove our particle board siding in sections and reseal as there were no exterior walls/wrap and our insulation was just under the siding; shim the roof level while regarding interior drywall as we don't have attic space; shim walls to align with varying depths of windows hung by another company; re-run electrical; and then add wood siding, two new decks with detailed craftsman woodwork, a custom front door, and other finishes. Working on our older home was harder than starting fresh and they handled it with care. Handling permitting was also in their remit and we were glad it was. Our architect handled forms for historical buildings/neighborhoods, city arborists, easements, and other zoning debacles. When we were limited by the city's requirements for expanding our porch, our architect adjusted our plans as best she could to still have a beautiful outcome. We also appreciated most of the subcontractors selected for the job. While the budget was hard to talk about up front, we didn't have any change orders due to surprises - unlike our interior reno project. With any long term renovation project it was important to stay in communication, keep notes, and ask questions and most stressful moments were quickly addressed by the team. The CG&S owners still invite us to their annual tamale dinner and treat us like family. We hope to do another project with them some day!
