We worked with local, family-owned CG&S on an exterior renovation - updating our 1940s home to Craftsman style. Our home had no original details, but did have a lot of the original exterior materials. The team had to meticulously remove our particle board siding in sections and reseal as there were no exterior walls/wrap and our insulation was just under the siding; shim the roof level while regarding interior drywall as we don't have attic space; shim walls to align with varying depths of windows hung by another company; re-run electrical; and then add wood siding, two new decks with detailed craftsman woodwork, a custom front door, and other finishes. Working on our older home was harder than starting fresh and they handled it with care. Handling permitting was also in their remit and we were glad it was. Our architect handled forms for historical buildings/neighborhoods, city arborists, easements, and other zoning debacles. When we were limited by the city's requirements for expanding our porch, our architect adjusted our plans as best she could to still have a beautiful outcome. We also appreciated most of the subcontractors selected for the job. While the budget was hard to talk about up front, we didn't have any change orders due to surprises - unlike our interior reno project. With any long term renovation project it was important to stay in communication, keep notes, and ask questions and most stressful moments were quickly addressed by the team. The CG&S owners still invite us to their annual tamale dinner and treat us like family. We hope to do another project with them some day! read more

It's hard to find good remodeling resources in Austin. Don't know why, but it's always been that way. We found what I believe to be the best in Austin. We had a 25 year old house that defined uglyfunk. Small rooms, dark hallways, tiny kitchen. Built on a hill with limited access to the house. I wanted to knock it down and start over but it wasn't practical. After meeting with several remodeling companies we settled on CG&S Design. They did everything from concepts to detailed design to babysitting the final punch list AND helping me find the service companies for regular maintenance. The job was so good that they won a NARI award for our remodel. I moved into a great house it came with a kitchen I referred to as "the cave". I have a visual impairment and needed to make the kitchen a light and visually comfortable room in which to work. After having received several bids, and based on the recommendation of a friend, I chose CG&S. Throughout the process I was impressed with the team's knowledge, skills and creativity. From design and architecture to construction and management/administration, everyone was very professional and understood my special needs. Not only do I have a very comfortable and functional kitchen but it is also elegant and beautiful. Also, because of some of the design features, my dining room is updated and both spaces now flow very well. As someone who is creative, I especially appreciated how my ideas were incorporated into the design while new ideas were suggested that were taking advantage of new technologies, e.g., bringing light from the roof of a two story home into the first floor kitchen. I was very pleasantly surprised with how the new design seemed to make space of the kitchen appear much larger and the ceiling much higher. CG&S helped me to choose appliances and materials and worked with trust worthy suppliers of materials and appliances. The team provided a line-by-line budget, met with me every two weeks at the house to see what had been accomplished and to check on the budget. The project manager was also amazing. He truly cared about the project and my living in the house as the project was underway. Those who did the construction were all respectful and careful; dust and inconveniences were minimized. We live in Central Austin (78703) and used CG&S to add a bathroom and laundry room and to enlarge and update our kitchen. Not only did CG&S create an excellent product, but they were also extremely professional and provided great customer service (all the way from the owners down to the construction crew). Both my husband and I have busy work schedules, and the CG&S team made the process as easy as possible for us. We never even had to move out of our house! The crew was very good about keeping the work site clean and being as unobtrusive as possible (while removing walls). It was clear they know what they are doing and are good at it. Our project was relatively small and the quote we received from CG&S for the project was definitely not the lowest. However, the quality of their work is excellent. They were meticulous, custom cutting wood finishes to match our existing siding and custom cutting molding to match the original molding, among many other things. I cannot imagine having gone with another builder. Additionally, we were impressed with the level of wrap around services we received -- between our architect, designer, general contractor and project manager at CG&S. We hired CG&S to remodel our kitchen and add on an adjacent dining area. This company was such a pleasure to work with. The whole process was great. The architecture/design team creates amazing 3D drawings, so you can see what your space will look like. They help you with colors, popping them into the drawings so you can see them in your space. The construction crews are super nice and respectful, and always clean up after each day. Our project manager was in contact nearly every day. CG&S is also very straightforward with their pricing. The number they give you in the beginning is very close to what you will actually pay. Any additional costs will be in the form of a written change order that you approve. CG&S seemed like a great design company, which is why I sought them out, but they go through a "weeding out" process before they meet with you, and apparently, we weren't up to snuff. We own a high-end home that needs a ton of work, and we were looking for guidance on what to focus on and what a healthy budget should be (because we have no idea). However, before they got any real details or even saw the home, they were disqualifying us based on budget. I think we have a pretty healthy budget and could probably increase it if it made sense, but it clearly wasn't high enough for them to consider us. We contacted G&S Design-Build because my father had such a great experience over the years with the work of Clarence and Billy. Randy and Billy agreed to take on creating a dry-in space out of an original project of existing concrete walls with rounded corners which no other contractor wanted to tackle. They did a spectacular job with the money we had to enclose the walls with a standing seam metal roof accommodating the already existing archways with windows and doors. We now have the most beautiful tongue and groove cedar ceilings in Central Texas!!! Very respectful and trustworthy workers who obviously enjoy their craft. Our communication lapsed toward the end of the three month period and we were surprised at the end of our cost plus arrangement. read more

I e-mailed CG&S over the Christmas holidays regarding a master bath renovation and did not expect to hear back until after the New Year. But within about a day I received a called from Billy, the president of the company. He was very down to earth and friendly. In our discussion, it became clear that they might be a little out of my price range. But that did not change how he treated me. He still wanted to get a sketch of my space and some photos which I emailed to him. Within hours he got back to me with a rough estimate just so I could know what I might be looking at. His estimate was really not that much different from others I have received, but the treatment and attentiveness I received was far better. While I have not yet made up my mind who to work with yet, and am still examining my budget, I am really considering using them just because of how they have treated me thus far. I have still not heard back from some of the companies that I contacted. If I am treated this well when they are fairly certain that I won't hire them, I think I should really consider them and am seriously doing so. read more
