Dave Portnoy probably rated this low, it's not his type. This is thicker doughy crust with a sweet tangy sauce. A college pie. Not a contender to New Haven pies, but it's one of the best traditional places on The Hill that make it good. I have always been surprised that nobody in CT or any college bar has copied the sports "schedule" motif on the wall. The banners on the back are the teams the football team plays. A decade-plus later, and that's still the case. Up from the City for a CUSE football game (v. UCONN), I stoped in for a quick bite, having chicken wings and pizza; the two dishes that kind of made Varsity famous. The chicken wings were excellent, and as crispy on the outside and juicy in the inside as they've ever been. The BBQ sauce they use is very good, with a little bit of a tangy punch. So delicious! The pepperoni slice was very good, also, with the perfect tomato sauce and cheese balance. Even though I've pretty much had nearly everything on the menu, those two Varsity classics remain my favorites. Went there for lunch 7/15/25 and the air conditioner was not working. It was 92 degrees outside. Excellent staff that works there; especially the cooks. Felt bad for the workers doing there job in the extreme heat. Will the owner do anything about the air conditioning? Same thing happened to Brooklyn Pickle Genesee Street last week. Management really ought to put a sign out front for patrons to let them decide if they want to dine there with no air conditioning in the dead of summer. Went here for lunch before we toured the university. Place was busy and a little confusing when we walked in, but quickly figured it out. There are three stations set up for what you are looking for. We went to the wrap station first because it was at the back of the restaurant. Server was friendly and helped me with the options. I went with the chipotle chicken wrap, was made quickly,and paid at the station. We then went to the pizza station and they lots of variety for slices. My daughter opted for two plain slices. When I paid for the pizza, they politely asked if I paid for the wrap, so guessing I could have brought the wrap over and made one transaction instead of two. Was not a big deal to me. I asked my daughter how the pizza was, she said really good! When at the pizza station everything smelled terrific so no doubt that it was really good. My wrap was huge and full. Normally would have only ate half and get the other half to go, but not an option in our scenario. Wrap was also packed, no skimping, and was very good as well! Me and my 2 kids came here for breakfast. The places was not busy. I noticed the customer who came before me stood for a while before his food arrived. I can't believe I'm going to say this (as a proud New Jerseyan no less) but...I liked this pizza! Ok, hear me out: I believe that pizza is a regional food that must be reviewed based on its stylistic peers (eg. New York vs Detroit vs Chicago etc), rather than overall. That said, I don't know how to categorize the Syracuse version on the spectrum of style, so for what it lacks in my ability to figure that out, it tastes pretty good. Crust was thick yet still light and crisp, reminiscent of the pan pizzas of Metro Detroit, but still resembled a classicly round New York pie otherwise (albeit much smaller in size of pie and slice). Sauce and cheese were pretty utility but did the job. White slice also performed well. All in all good stuff, I liked it. Keep up the good work, Varisty! read more

If you have never had a Humdinger, then you are missing out on one of Life's greatest treasures. Eating a Humdinger is like the first time you hear your best friend do a perfect cover of John Denver's classic "Take Me Home, Country Roads". I'm not sure how many Humdingers I've had in my life, but it is more than the number of championships the Buffalo Bills have won. If you're a vegetarian, vegan, or pescatarian, then you probably won't want to eat a Humdinger because it contains fried chicken. On the other hand, if you do eat chicken, then trying the Humdinger will probably be one of the top 3 most stellar achievements of your year. Pro tip - if you want fries instead of chips, then when you order the Humdinger you should also say, "fries instead of chips". This will cost more, but the fries are better than the chips so it is worth it. read more

The Bad: I dig the style, but it could use some renovation. The tables and seats are worn (for some that is part of the charm). In summary I'd recommend this place if you find yourself in the area and are in need of a quick slice or burger. The prices are reasonable and you can't beat the atmosphere on game day. And then, again, on days three and four. Breakfast is incredibly reasonably priced and made to order. I had an omelette (which comes with toast) that was under $10 even after I added cheddar cheese, onions, peppers, tomatoes, and bacon. This omelette was SO good. The staff were incredibly nice and had our orders down by day two. Make sure you give yourself about 15 minutes for your breakfast to be prepared, but otherwise I definitely could have made this a regular thing if I were local. read more
