Step through these doors and it feels like you are stepping back in time. This is what a real butcher shop feels like. It's a perfect movie set from the 1930's. My family has been coming here since before I was born. Of course their meats are amazing. It's a German butcher, so they will have all of the German sausages, cuts, sides and mustards. The staff and the customers are old friends. Everyone seems to know each other. Even though they are based on tradition, they are making new creations all of the time. This is a true Syracuse tradition and you should come, even if just to smell what a real butcher smells like. read more

Smells amazing as soon as you walk in! Very kind and helpful staff behind the counter. While all looks and smells great and I appreciate how great the staff was, I felt like there was nothing especially great about the meats that I ordered. Burnt ends had great flavor but were nearly impossible to chew. My dogs did love their pup jerky though! read more

This place is a landmark in Syracuse. The meat is top quality and so is the service. They have so many choices and it's nice to have a butcher that can customize your order. It's soup season now so I will be going in to get a smoked ham hock to season the soup. On this visit I got stew beef for a beef stew and it was very lean and perfect. I make the drive from Marcellus as it's totally worth the time and trip. The service is spot on and very friendly. I always end up buying way more than I intended to and my wife always rolls here eyes at me when I get home and unpack my booty. I really need to come with a list and stick to it as I typically come for "steak" and walk out with so much more. Their bacon is a tad thin for my liking as I prefer a thicker cut bacon , but what it lacks in thickness it more than makes up for in flavor. I can overlook that as the bacon is indeed TASTY! The variety of their sausages is pleasing and all are indeed good. For some reason, perhaps a total lack of self control at my end, I always seem to walk out with some sausages even when not on my list. My only issue (all be it petty) - I do wish they'd put a higher fat content with more spice in their breakfast sausages as I like a spicy/sage breakfast sausage. With that said, theirs is good and I will buy them again. It's just that we all like what we like and I prefer a stronger flavor breakfast sausage then they offer. I love the aged and extra sharp cheddar they offer and l've never had a bad steak there. Let me say that again....I'VE NEVER GOT A BAD STEAK THERE. Although I've been tempted to sample there prepared food selection, I've not yet done so. It all looks good, but I'll have to reserve my comments for when I sample something. Excellent imported German foods. You can get your spaetzle here, your red cabbage, and you can top it with their homemade saurbraten. According to the sign out front Liehs & Steigerwald's has been dominating the sausage and bratwurst scene in Syracuse since 1936! How am I just learning about them now!? We're talking about specialty sausages like chorizo, andouille, and kielbasa; bratwursts in the beef, pork and chicken varieties; and German hot dogs and coneys. All are around $7 a pound and all good in size. But lets concentrate, specifically, on those chicken brats. We picked up a few Spicy Buffalo Wing Chicken* Bratwursts recently for a bbq and I looooved them! Chicken, hot sauce and bits of blue cheese all mixed up! Sooo so good! Other chicken varieties included bacon/ranch/chive, cordon bleu, rosemary/garlic. Nom nom nom. I want to try them all! And I will be next time I'm up in the 'Cuse. :-) read more

I have been coming to Liehs & Steigerwald for over 60 years, since I first came with my father at the age of six, and the store is indeed a Syracuse landmark. Their meats, sausages, liverwurst, and other products are absolutely wonderful, the staff is always friendly and helpful, and just the scent of the smoked meats as you walk in the door will make you smile. Going there is always a treat, and coming home with their products makes my family happy. Every time I walk into this place, I'm always mad at myself afterwards for not going in here more. Their sausages are just phenomenal. My father, who knows his food, has declared that their extra hot Italian sausage is the best sausage he's ever had. High praise if you know my father. They always have great looking cuts of meat as well but I've never purchased anything. Thankfully this place is a two minute drive from my house, so I know I'll be back in the near future. read more

Best Bratwurst outside of Müchen Go either to the original on Grant or the new place in Downtown. And get the best hot dogs and bratwurst in CNY. Their meat is terrific better than anything you could get at that chain supermarket everyone loves. They have a wonderful collection of snefs from Germany. Their cooked sauerkraut is perfect for use with the brats or in a choucroute which you can make with their smoked pork chops. The staff at both Grant or downtown are friendly - helpful - and know what they are doing. They won't steer you wrong. If you are just stoping downtown to pick stuff up - there are loading zone parking spaces in the alley - just leave one free for me. read more

Great place for German Meats. The small shop on Grant always smells good. We have had their holiday kielbasa, which half a ring is big enough for a family of four with two teenage boys. I didn't care for their smaller bratwurst, I prefer the plumper type. Which they do have and are good. Recently we had to special order some sausages, which they gladly did (there is a minimum pound limit). They turned out great! It is nice to have a place near by will get you exactly what you need. We had great service when we went here wanting something specific. Every year a few days before Christmas we make a prime rib. We normally get it from Baltimore where I live and I drive it up to Syracuse, but we went to Liehs and Steigerwalds to try something different. This is your typical family meat market, it's really fun and more importantly, I love supporting small businesses and I'm happy that this one is doing well. We ordered a 5 pound dry aged prime rib and were pretty satisfied. While the flavor of the dry aged meat wasn't the best we've ever had. It cut like butter and had an amazing buttery texture. It was a comparable price to what I normally pay and I wasn't surprised by the price at all, I thought it was very fair. I would like to come back here and try more of there products, I really enjoyed this place a lot! read more

I'm very disappointed with the quality of the products. I was in this shop 2 weeks ago, bought Wiener, they was pretty good. Also a few Knackwurst, they was not dry enough, full of fat and soft. I hanged them at home for one more week, but the taste was very disgusting and they endet up in the trash. I got also Hackepeter (raw meat which you put on a roll with salt, pepper and onions). The seller say this is Hackepeter to eat it raw. At home under a other light and a look in the middle, the meat was pink and we decide not to eat it raw. Maybe other products are good, but I was just happy with one of three products of my purchase. read more

This is an amazing place to get German or local specialties. The whole reason I came here was because a friend of mine passed away and he had been coming here for years. Now I'm absolutely addicted to their pastrami & coneys, not to mention there's Cooper's chard which the lovely lady at the counter was so kind to let me sample and now I'm hooked on it too! I have been going here since I was a child. This is the last of its kind in the area, a real butcher shop. Your incredible experience starts in the parking lot where you can smell the meats smoking. When you get inside, take a deep breath, yummy. I think they should can the air in this place and sell it! I am serious! My favorites here: the ring bologna, the pepper bacon, and these spicy pepperettes (sp?) that hang on the wall. Bock wurst, when in season, is to die for. I'm a huge fan, and I've been going here with my parents since I was a little kid. I'm a huge fan of the bacon (every flavor is worth a try), festival sausage, and especially the landjagers. They're a local family business well worth supporting, and the downtown location has sandwiches too. They sell Boar's Head deli meats as well, which truly are a cut above the average supermarket deli.
