I was anticipating a good slice when I stopped here before a lecture at SU; instead I received a small, hardened slice of pizza, which couldn't even be folded. What a disappointment. I also ordered a tomato soup, which I swear was made by Campbell's. Of course, this is a place close to SU on their meal plan, so it is somewhat similar to cafeteria food. On the other hand, my husband ordered a salad, which had a choice of three lettuces, five vegetables (and quite a selection), and many dressings. Varsity has been my go to restaurant on Marshall Street throughout my 4 years at Syracuse. The pizza is a classic (at this point I've probably tried all their flavors and all of them are solid), their tenders are great, the humdinger is amazing, heck even the salads are good! If you are visiting Syracuse University or just looking for food around campus I would always recommend varsity. It can get busy during lunch and dinner hours but it's never ridiculously crowded. The one beef I have with Varsity is that the food isn't consistent. 8 out of 10 times you go there you'll be blown away, but those 2 times you'll leave disappointed. So go there as soon as possible and pray you're in the 80%! read more

The workers there consistently prep pizzas and cook them so that its customers aren't waiting in line long. Here's the thing about Varsity (yeah, 'Varsity' - not sure why 'Pizza' is thrown in as part of the name, because it's not really a pizza place): I think some management of expectations is in order. Take the pizza. It's a Greek/Upstate style of pie that a lot of local places (Acropolis and Dorian's among others around this neighborhood) serve, but Varsity does it better. It's doughy, double-cooked (first in a pan, then on the floor of the oven), and it's fantastic. But it's not 'pizza' in any traditional sense of a great pie. Same deal with the wings. They aren't a typical Buffalo style; they've got a semi-sweet sauce. Again, if you're looking for something else, steer clear. If you want a slice of great pizza, you won't find it here. If you're looking specifically for a thin-crust New York -style slice, you really won't find it here. (But you could to to Gianni's in Eastwood or Mario's in DeWitt or dozens of other places in the area.) And if you want pizza -- or anything else -- made of ingredients whose source is proudly shared with you, oy, don't even bother. (Bread products are made by New York Bakery, a decent commercial bakery. The dough comes fresh from a local bakeshop. And unlike 90% of pizzerias, Varsity uses fresh green bell peppers on its pies rather than canned. But I'd be willing to bet that nearly everything else in the place came frozen from the back of a Sysco truck.) No, Varsity isn't the place to find any of these things. It's just an iconic University Hill institution with a broad menu and decent prices. What Varsity does, I think they do pretty well. It's a cool spot to read the DO, people-watch, take advantage of cafeteria-style service to grab a quick bite, or have a pie and beers after an SU game. They've got good short-order cooks making a bunch of decent diner-style burgers and sandwiches. The Humdinger's a classic, and their Cajun haddock on Fridays is criminally underrated. read more

As someone from NYC, nothing will ever top the pizza you can get four hours away from Syracuse. That said, Varsity's pizza was juicy and packed a flavorful punch. Came here at the recommendation of a friend as I was in town for one night. I wanted to something quick, cheap, and good and this place did not fail. I came on a Monday Night during the summer and it was quite empty as Syracuse students are not currently in town. I went for the double cheeseburger with fries and it costs me around $12 which is reasonably priced. The service was good, staff was friendly, and it was a quick in and out. An institution in its own right, Varsity has been apart of my Syracuse University experience more than any other locale right off campus. From when I was a little girl to now my parents have loved the location and my mom constantly reminds me of the times when she would hear "Amy your wings are ready, Amy." Varsity has good food, great people, and is the quintessential college pizza joint. This is my favorite pizza place in Syracuse, and I have been coming here with family and friends since before I could walk. It was a Friday night tradition which has faded as we've grown older, but I still stop here one every week or two when I'm in town. My favorite Varsity slice is the Spinach or Tomato feta. It's the right amount of dough, thickness, and crunchiness, and they are very generous with the feta cheese. It's one of my favorite pizzas of all time. They keep their prices affordable, and their quality is consistent. If you come around lunchtime on a weekday, all the specialty pizzas will be available by-the-slice. If you come at an off time, such as the late evening, you'll generally have to order a whole pie if you want one of the less mainstream toppings like barbecue chicken. Their wings and the special tangy barbecue sauce -- it's a secret recipe -- are great, though they may be an acquired taste. When I'm on campus around lunchtime, their cafeteria-style lunch line serves up great hot turkey sandwiches with mashed potatoes, gravy, and a side of cranberry sauce. Their chili cheese fries are also a cheap and tasty favorite of mine. They've cleaned the place up in recent years, added TVs, replaced the famously graffiti-covered bathroom with something clean and modern, as well as removed the water fountain that used to squirt people in the face if you pressed too hard. Yet the place still has soul. There aren't many cafeteria-style restaurants like this that hearken back to another era. I highly recommend a visit. It's a greasy spoon, not fine dining, and it delivers on its promise. An added note -- they have a projection screen that is used during major sporting events. If only Yelp had a "6th" star... Whenever visiting the 'cuse for the holidays, I have a "Must See" list of places to visit in the short time I am home. With the Orange currently undefeated and #1 in Mens' Basketball, it made my visit to The Varsity even better. I met my old college roommate here for lunch. There is free parking on Marshall St. from 12p-1p (although you better be on a full out sprint with a fist full of quarters for the meter at 12:59p). The sweet smell of pizza welcomed us at the threshold as we vascillated between being good and ordering a salad or being lured by the sounds of the Sirens and eating the best pizza ever created in a pizza oven. I ordered a slice of broccoli pizza, my roommate, a slice of spinach pizza. The crust alone would be enough to fork over the $75 ticket change for my flight just so I could go back and visit one more time before heading back south. I love that in the far back, hanging high above the salad/sandwich counter, are small towels with the names of all of the Orange basketball opponents and every time the Orange win, they turn the towel upside down. Atmosphere is casual (popular with the area hospital staff). Blue booths are scattered throughout the restaurant (using this term loosely). In my 4 years at Syracuse as a student I never ONCE had a good experience there. Varsity's location and "fame" on the campus is the ONLY thing keeping them in business. If their success was based on customer service alone then they would've been bankrupt years ago. The woman who is usually making wraps and salads acts as if she is so bored she cannot be bothered to make you food. One night I was ordering a wrap and she asked me what flavor wrap I'd like, I looked back up at the board and said to myself "Hm...spinach or wheat?" And she very curtly sighed and said "It really doesn't matter, they all taste the same anyways." Moving down the line to the grill, these guys are real jerks. If you don't totally know the lay of the land and know exactly what to say and how to order then they'll visibly show signs of frustration and treat you with disrespect. I don't think I have a single friend (male or female) who hasn't been treated rudely by the people at the grill. Sometimes when we are potentially discussing grabbing dinner at Varsity someone will say, "I would but I'd want to order from the grill and I really don't feel like dealing with those guys tonight." The guys at the pizza counter are the most tolerable in the whole place. Nothing bad to say there. Now finally, here I am, graduated and back at home OUT OF THE STATE and I check my credit card statement and see that I have $2.50 charge from Varsity Pizza that was dated in May, A WEEK after I left campus. I hadn't been to Varsity since early April. So I called and was told that they "weren't able to see that sort of information." I've worked in food service and I've seen their POS system and they are ABSOLUTELY able to see past charges made by their credit card machine. Pushing that obvious lie aside, they took down my name and number and said they'd "research" it and call me back. No call back. It's been 5 days. I now have to call my bank and dispute the charge. read more

Recently I visited the old alma mater and I just had to visit Varsity. This is by far one of the long lasting landmarks of M-Street (I was talking to a '78 grad on the train one morning and she asked me if it was still standing!). Its orange and blue theme will make any Orangeman proud. They have old photographs decorating the place. The food is great, the people are friendly, and the pitchers are plenty. Definitely a great place to be pre-football games (even though we have been sucking as of late). Its also a frequent stop for families, the nearby hospital workers, as well as hungry students. I really like the pizza here and would often pick up a slice to-go after work when I worked nearby. The slices are generally fresh, warm, and delicious. There is also always an array of types of slices to choose from. I have enjoyed any kind of pizza here that I have tried, and I love the flavor of their sauce and cheese. They also have a great salad station with lots of fresh veggies and other options. I was really impressed the first time I got a salad here. I haven't tried any of their other food. In addition to picking up food to-go, I've met friends here for lunch during the week. It gets very, very busy over the lunch hour with people on their lunch break from work. However, they do an excellent job of keeping the place clean even during busy times. Service is always fast and friendly. They do deliver, but it is limited to a close vicinity. The food set-up confused me the first time I came in here. The counter by the front door is where you order slices and pay for them; the counter at the back is where the salad station is and where you order and pay for any food aside from slices. They do serve beer, though I've never gotten any here. Overall, Varsity is my favorite pizza place in Syracuse and I really wish they delivered to where I live. read more

Varsity is a cult classic amongst the Syracuse students, faculty, and residents. The place has really good (albeit not super healthy) food and cheap pizza and beer served by incredibly friendly staff members. Friday's and game days can get super crowded, but it's honestly worth the wait and hassle if you have to stand in line. If you want cheap pizza that's good enough, Varsity has you covered. The best thing you can probably get there is the burgers. Very fresh and juicy. Prices recently went up but still worth it. Pretty good salad selection if that's your fancy Greek one in particular has some nice character to it. One surprise that I enjoyed is the humdinger. We ordered there for lunch for work. I called ahead to make sure they could do Buffalo chicken tenders and they said yes. I called back a few minutes later to place the order. We got back to work and they were regular tenders. I called about it the lady apologized and asked what I wanted her to do and I asked did they have anyone delivering, she said not for at least another hour Which wasn't going to work. I asked just for a refund and she said they couldn't do refunds only credit for the next time. She then said she'd get a manager. The manager was just argumentative about it and told me we at least were only charged for regular tenders. I said that was beside the point, that I didn't order this. She asked if I wanted to bring it back because they're not supposed to do refunds without bringing it back. I said well if I could bring it back I would just get them dipped.. I'm working now I can't bring it back. She said well next time you come in we'll hook you up and I said well this isn't somewhere we order frequently so I'd really just rather have my money back. Then it was a debate about the receipt and if we don't have it they probably can't do it but we weren't given one. Ultimately, I still didn't even get my money back because they apparently can't give refunds without the owner there. Which is unreal to me How an establishment that's been around for so long cant do a refund for $10 without the owner. She said she'd call us if and when the owner came in today but doesn't know when they're going to come and they don't come everyday. So I'm just stuck with food I didn't order, and a waiting game on my money back. And then the one slice of CBR I also got the chicken tasted so old. Just overall not a good experience. read more

Okay folks, this place is actually really good. They don't try to put themselves out to be a place where you get "gourmet pizzas." You get in line, pick out your pizza slices, and sit down. You're done within a couple minutes, give or take the minutes you need to garnish it with parmesan, garlic powder, oregano, chili flakes. Thing about the pizza is that they are solid on their flavors. I love when the pizza is on the crispy side, particularly when they're NY style. I come from Chicago, so anything that's really different from the deep-dish, I'm down with; but it's gotta be different, namely being crispy. The only thing keeping it from becoming a 5-star is the crust and how it's a little "cardboard-like." But STOP. Don't dismiss it from being bad. The crust is just so firm that you can lift up the pizza on the crust end and it'll lift up the whole thing. That just means it's got a lot of dough or it's a bit over-baked... or it's been sitting out in the serving display shielded area. 7/10 read more
