It's a great neighborhood joint and the lady behind the counter couldn't have been any sweeter. I really wanted to love this place since I love places that have a history but overall my visit was more like a 3.5 The food: Italian Chicken Sandwich- I heard of this place because a few years back I saw an episode of The Best Thing I Ever Ate and they featured this place. Unfortunately, they were out of the Chicken cutlets. The nice lady mentioned weekdays are better as they usually sellout or have big orders weekends. So I ordered The Godfather with hoagie ( the way to go) bread. Filled with Prosciutto, Soppressata, Capi (sliced to order) fresh mozzarella cheese & roasted peppers, it was very good. Excellent little grocery store. We get the fresh bread from here and cold cuts. I noticed on the menu there was several interesting soups listed for today. Lobster bisque will definitely be on my list next time we are here. We got a couple arinchini that we heated up at home and it had a nice crispy outside with a delightful meat filling and with a bit if cheese I side of it. Operators was friendly and prompt. This is a great deli, that being said, last year I was there buying cold cuts during the Christmas holiday , the store was packed and after I made my purchase, I was on my way out and tried to open the door and found I couldn't due to the door opens in (Code violation) and the customers were unable to move to let me out. This wasn't much of a problem due to the fact that there was no fire, if there was one we would have all perished. A word to the wise is sufficient. read more

Meats hanging from the ceiling, quality looking meats and cheeses and a great selection of what looked like homemade pastas etc... Why the 3 stars?? I ordered "The Godfather"... it was more like a "Godchild".. The meats were delicious and bread was fresh but damn I'm still starving for nearly 9 bucks! I've held back quite a while for this review because it's a hidden gem. But I cannot contain my love for this place any longer. Varsi's is amazing. The staff are friendly, owner is great and best of all, their food is fantastic. I've been coming to this place 3-4 times a week for nearly 4 years and I've never seen the store empty. Products move quickly and are always fresh. I've always said, there's 10,000 places to get a sandwich in NYC. What differentiates this place from others is their bread! It really makes the sandwich. Their semolina bread is so good. Any sandwich on that bread is worth any wait they may have. Some other amazing offerings are their chicken cutlet, stuffed peppers, potato salad, dried/fresh sausage, their meatballs(I believe only served on Thursdays), Roast pork (also a special once a week). I could go on and on. Everything I've tried there is fantastic which brings me to why I've decided to write this review. They've recently added a new item to the menu. When I tell you that this chicken sandwich beats Chick-Fil-A, I sincerely mean it. It's called the Chick-A-Varsi. Hands down my favorite chicken sandwich to date. I'm so fortunate to have this chicken sandwich so close to where I work but I would drive an hour or more for it! It's that good. And for $7, it feels like you're getting it for a steal. The chicken is perfectly juicy. All the components work together so well and it's crafted to perfection. The sauce they use with the sandwich really takes it over the top. I've been a fan of this place's food for years now and recently placed a catering order with Varsi that was a mostly positive experience. Pros: - Top notch food, everything was delicious. - Reasonable prices, maybe a hair on the higher side compared to a few other places I've done business with though the higher quality of the food justifies it for me. - Friendly and honest staff that worked with me to find an amount of food fitting for the amount of guests I had, not trying to oversell and in fact warning me I'm maybe ordering too much. The guy who took down my order was very patient with me on the phone and answering whatever questions I had. Cons: - Most places I've done catering with will throw in a few minor extras when you're spending $300+. Some bread, macaroni salad, paper plates, plastic cutlery, etc. You get what you pay for here and nothing more. The deli itself is very old school Italian. Meat hanging from the ceiling and fresh homemade goodies all over the place. They have a special sandwich selection so I decided on the Three C's. Chicken, Cheddar, and Chipolte. The chicken cutlet tasted like it was just done. And the chipolte sauce they have was this honey mixture that was so good. After hearing about this long-standing famous institution, I finally paid my first visit to Varsi Deli and was delighted. I got the Italian chicken sandwich, which is a 12-inch sub loaded with fresh breaded chicken cutlets, just enough fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced (and not very salty) prosciutto, sweet roasted peppers and a little olive oil. While I bet I could eat it all myself (in one day), I kindly shared it with my parents. Mac salad was also a nice side to make the meal whole.
