Variety is a hipster coffee shop in Bushwick with a fairly large seating area (compared to most of the other coffee shops in the area). I've been here many times and gotten many different things. While I enjoyed the dairy free hot chocolate, I don't think the coffee is that good. And they have possibly the worst chai I've ever had. Embarrassed to say that I threw mine away because I couldn't even finish. It's always super crowded and everyone is wearing tiny hats. I can never sit anywhere and people look at me funny even though I'm cute. Every time I give them another chance I'm always disappointed and would rather go to the Dunkin' Donuts down the street and I'm not like that! I really dig this cafe. I went here a few times when I needed to get some work done. I ordered a regular coffee and a chocolate chip cookie. The coffee was strong and kept me focused on my work, and the cookie was big and tasted alright. I actually wanted a sandwich, but they don't make fresh sandwiches at the cafe. So that's a downside to Variety is that the food options are limited, with only some pastries available. I generally prefer cafes that sell freshly made sandwiches and other food (like Little Skips). But Variety Coffee is so spacious with a good amount of seating, that I'll forego fresh sandwiches/food options to get some work done. Not to mention, they also stay open pretty late (compared to most cafes in Brooklyn). The cashiers and staff are also friendly and keep the place clean. I also like that they have self-serve water, so you don't have to ask the cashier for some water. The AC can make the place pretty cold (even on already cold days), so bring a sweater if you can. I also like that it's in a convenient location, so after leaving I can usually grab food somewhere nearby. I also like the casual vibe of the place: the high ceilings make it airy and spacious, the brick walls give it a casual vibe, and they have different sized tables (some small, others larger) so an individual or group can find the seat(s) they need. The worst experience ever. I asked one espresso and it was bitter as a poison. It was not matter of taste, but a coffee not drinkable, undrinkable. I have asked sorry because I was bothering them, none asked me sorry for the coffee, or if I would like something else. I truly hope that this flavour and taste was not the acid that usually is used to wash the coffee machines. At the end I have asked an Americano, and I did not realize that they give me the hottest coffee ever: I went out of the bar, tried to drink and burned myself (lips and mouth). Cash only. I'm surprised how many cafes are cash only in this area and is the only reason why I didn't give them five stars. When I am in a rush, I don't want to also have to worry about getting cash out just to get a coffee. Great Cold Brew for only $2.50, the other specialty cafe down the street sells it for $3.50 which is a bit too pricy for me. I got a bag of beans too that I am excited to try out. I liked the ambiance with good music and people having meetings or working on their computer, but very crowded. Get there early if you plan on working. read more

Well, i'm not a reviewer person but i'm going to give two stars to this place not for the quality of the coffee, which is great, but for the attitude of some staff working here behind the bar. I'm a regular costumer, i come here literally every morning getting always the same two things, soya latte and plain croissant. So basically today, as usual, walked in here and asked for the same thing and in some how the cashier misunderstood what I've asked for so the barista made me the wrong thing, and at the moment she realized that, without even say sorry, like it was my fault, with an attitude she said "try to speak up next time", whaaat?! The coffee seemed to be on the sour/tart side (a preference for some?) & my buddies seemed to enjoy the mocha. What I wish were different was the atmosphere. It is somewhat tricky to find seating--okay that happens, but the environment struck me as a solo cyborg mecca. I suppose that's awesome for people who don't want to be bothered and just want quality laptop time. There are times for that. If you need to get work done and don't mind a steady moderate to high noise level AND are not necessarily looking for calming vibes, this spot seems appropriate. The folks behind the counter are what ultimately made this place unbearable for me. If you're fed up with the over-privileged hipster attitude that's consumed this area, don't bother with this place. It was cute when it opened - decent coffee, nice environment - but nowadays, the staff is so stuck up. I came in today trying to connect my laptop to their wifi. It didn't work, I asked a guy behind the counter for help, and he pretty much just scoffed at me. Note to the 30-or-40-something-year-old brown-haired dude in the unkempt beard, forearm and neck tattoos who thinks he's so much cooler than the rest of us, try putting in the slightest bit of effort into your going-nowhere job by being the least bit nice to your customers rather than casting shade on them. I love Variety! I stop in every morning for an iced coffee for myself and an earl grey tea for my husband. I'm not a tea drinker, but this is one of the only places where he will order tea from. I've passed this place a bunch of times but always been too busy to go in. I went in during lunch time on a weekday. There was no line but every table was taken and yes a bunch of people were sitting with their laptops getting work done. As I was just a walk-in, I can barely comment on the barista since our exchange was super short but since this place has gotten some bad comments, I'll add my two cents. My barista was cordial and super patient (I realized I had a bunch of change and it took me a while.) He even went over to make my espresso while I got myself together. My shot was priced at $2.50 but let me tell you it was of such high quality, it was a bargain in comparison. For me, it's all about the espresso: I will now be one of their regulars. read more
