I concur with most of the evaluations. Stopped in totally on a whim while exploring the neighborhood while on a pure four day food trip. Wanted to see if it's true, that it's hard to find a bad empanada. The result? What I picked up that came with a small container of green hot sauce was quite fine, and I suppose if you're going to serve them anywhere near the #7 train you'd better be on your game because there are a lot of great choices there. I didn't find the inside to be particularly inviting and service was curt and made one feel like they'd imposed on the person that waited on me. Oh well. Local bakery in Jackson Heights, serving both Asian style desserts and Spanish Pan (breads). They even sell empanadas which were very tasty (yes, I ordered the cheese one). Not too greasy and very crisp. Situated on a corner of the block, they have a fairly large dining area considering it's a bakery. Can easily seat 20. But the menu is where it gets interesting. Their prices seem to be very reasonable and the place is home-y. They serve breakfast all day, talking eggs and bacon people! They even sell burgers and Spanish Rice dishes. I didn't get to try any hot food (except the empanada) as it was a Saturday afternoon around 3pm. Just stopped in for drinks and snack food. My family and I tried the croissant (very doughy not flaky which I didn't care for), the Oreo cupcake (yummy), pan Con Queso (cheesy bread which was great), and bought a Napoleon (to go, was for someone else). A lot of the cakes on display looked great but I didn't shop for that. There were lots to choose from and I'm eyeing the flan on my next visit. The tables were clean and the staff were friendly. The person who answered the phone is rude and rushing you for your order. She hung up on me before letting me finish. Went to pick up the food and the cashier had a nasty attitude and rude face the whole time. Didn't even talk once and when I finished paying, she just placed the money on the counter and walked away. There was only one other customer sitting down eating so it wasn't like she was in a rush to attend other customers. Also, when I checked my food at home, my order was wrong. I was so surprised to see a Vanilla Cafe while walking down the street here, that I just had to stop in and order a bubble tea. The staff here is definitely not used to customers ordering this drink, because they did not even know the price and were tripping over themselves trying to remember how to make it. The tea was not all that bad, but you could definitely tell that it was not made by someone with experience. Maybe this is just a place to come for coffee... However what surprise me was that you had a limited of 30minutes to be in the restaurant. which I'm like really so pretty much what you trying to say that if I order something and it take long I have to speed to eat with a limited time. They claim to have the best iced coffee in town ($1.75) and offer a delicious selection of bubble teas and fresh fruit frappes, but I ultimately differed. One clear standout on the menu caught my eye: Ovaltine. I ordered up a small cup ($1.50) with sugar and was pleased with the result. I'm on the fifth-leg of an outdoor taco crawl in 90-degrees-hot-&-oh-so-humid weather... I pretend to grocery-shop (in an air-conditioned supermarket) while I wait for my friends to finish their meals outdoors. Then we reluctantly moved on (away from the AC!), but we catch glimpses of some signs (Hawaiian Ice, Smoothieessss!). It was an indoor cafe with AC, we were sold!. The Strawberry smoothie they serve here is very good. It's sweet, creamy, and the ice crystals melt as they flow down your throat. A smoothie of this nature has unnatural powers, and rejuvenating qualities. After I finished my smoothie, I trudged onwards with our taco crawl, and I ate, and I ate, and I... Rejuvenation! I was really debating about whether or not to give Vanilla Cafe 3 or 4 stars...I decided on 3 simply because I think they had a bigger selection of stuff and because sometimes customer service is a bit...lacking - with how long you need to wait to order even if the place is kind of empty. The ice coffee here is FANTASTIC. It's cheap ($1.75 I think) for a nice-sized cup and it's delicious and actually ice brewed unlike some places. The baked goods look fresh and I'm pretty sure they do all the baking on the premises. The only baked good I've had is a "Milky Bun" think which was interesting and their Colombian cake which is amazingly moist, delicious, not too sweet and really authentic as far as my childhood experiences so...tastes just like the homemade Colombian cake served by practically everyone at the Colombian Independence Festival that takes place annually in Corona Park. I came in for a strawberry smoothie. Call it a pregnancy craving for sweet things. It was alright. It was extremely sweet and at the same time cold and relaxing. It was a medley of blended ice, real strawberries, tons of sugar and maybe milk? I think I will come back and try the Chinese pastries or the sausage roll. The oreo and dulce de leche mousses here used to be very good, but for some reason the quality of their mousses has diminished. Prices of the pastries are decent and there's moderate seating available as well. Really nice option in the middle of Jackson Height for a quick bit to eat. They brew very very delicious coffee that are strong & tastefully in their dimensions. They also have an amazing Colombian cake that just falls apart in your hands and in your mouth - so tender and sweet and delicious. Very good coffee! The pan de queso are very good (not the best) but it will do with coffee in the morning. The empanadas are just ok, could be better. If you're hungry for breakfast, get the egg/bacon/cheese on a bagel (hits the spot each time). For sometime lighter, get the toasted sesame seed bagel with cream cheese. Even better than Dunkin, the bagels...hot and crusty. Great place to sit for a bit, have a coffee and read the paper, meet a friend, or I bring my daughter, nice and relaxing. They have Latino morning tv show. If you want a quick lumch or dinner, order the fish sandwich w/fries and salad, and the hamburger. The iced coffee hits the spot. Came in for the first time today and it will definitely be the last. First, the person at the counter was clearly too preoccupied or uninterested to properly take down the order. In my opinion it was a simple order. It's not that difficult to make a bacon, egg and cheese and a egg and cheese. The first sandwich had no bacon. There was literally one piece of bacon for a whole sandwich and the egg and cheese was merely an egg because adding cheese proved to be such a difficult task . To top it all off, when we approached the cooks regarding the mixup, they refused to add bacon claiming there were 2 strips, which still seemed ridiculous to me for a whole roll and then attempted to add a cold piece of cheese to the other sandwich.
