There are many locally owned ice cream shops in D.C. and this one is from NYC, but it's still a worthy stop. Their ice cream punches with flavor, especially the Honeycomb one. In my opinion, their basic sundae is the best in the city. Pick Honeycomb and they add whipped cream, sprinkles, and dark chocolate fudge. There's a little area to sit and restrooms in the back.

Stopped in here for a little sweet tooth after getting a coffee. Valentine's Day and everyone was out to dinner so we had the place to ourselves! Very quiet and happy. Wahooo! Staff were friendly and sweet. We got our ice cream (2 scoop each, him honeycomb, me honeycomb and coffee affogato). We sat down and happily ate our ice cream, which was the first ice cream we've had since our last visit! So well worth the wait and delicious. I could eat the entire case of honeycomb if I could.

I love, love Van Leeuwen ice cream because their basic flavors (like earl grey) are solid and they have so many unique seasonal flavors that are worth trying. And it's so creamy and smooth?? However, the pricing for just a single scoop is actually crazy, which is why I give it a 4/5. I walk by this Van Leeuwen location pretty often, but it was their eye-catching pastel-themed sidewalk stand that got my attention. And one of their current seasonal flavor was blue jasmine passion fruit swirl, which sounded like such an innovative and delicious combination? Despite knowing I was about to pay $8 per scoop, I walked in. SINGLE SCOOP - 7.45 On its own, the blue jasmine would have been so uninspiring. The jasmine is floral and fragrant, and the butterfly pea flower adds a subtle earthiness. It's light and elegant, but definitely wouldn't be an exceptional ice cream flavor. The passion fruit swirl spices and elevates the entire flavor profile. It's tangy and juicy. It's bold and sweet. It adds so much depth and mixed wonderfully with the subtle flavors of blue jasmine. Such a wild flavor. I ended up going twice this past weekend. I dropped $16.38 on two scoops of blue jasmine passion fruit swirl. It's fine.

This Van Leeuwen is located in the National Landing area, and super convenient to get to if you're a resident here. They offer a nice selection of ice cream and vegan ice cream, in addition to the pints that you could purchase. Note that the menu that they post online does not list all the flavors that you may find in the actual store, as we saw some additional ones when we went. There are single, double, and triple scoops, and even milkshake options. We tried: +Bigface Coffee Affogato +Lemon Poppy Seed Muffin +Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Brownie +Cookies & Cream +Praline Butter Cake +Sicilian Pistachio +Blueberry Jelly Donut +Sour Cherry Creamsicle My favorites have been the Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Brownie and the Bigface Coffee Affogato. Avoid the milkshakes, as they are super thin and watery; better to just stick with the scoops. The staff are friendly, but depending who's on shift, you may get a 'generous scooper' or one that kind of falls flat and doesn't really fill the cup. There are seating available inside, and metered parking in the area. +may have additional flavors +friendly service

Have not eaten in store, but the ice cream pints in the freezer are delicious. Had the gray and the strawberry Matcha both were perfect for some TV series and ice cream time

The wind was howling, my face was numb, and the air had that unforgiving bite of a cold day in the Northeast. Naturally, I decided this was the perfect moment for ice cream. Because sometimes, life is about making questionable decisions in pursuit of simple joys. Van Leeuwen didn't disappoint. I ordered a scoop of strawberry matcha with cookies and cream--an unlikely combination that worked brilliantly. The strawberry matcha was light and earthy, while the cookies and cream added just the right amount of rich sweetness. Together, they balanced each other perfectly, like a well-thought-out dessert duet. Staff was nice and friendly too Would I recommend it? Absolutely. The ice cream delivers on flavor and quality, reminding you why indulgence is always worth it. Even on the coldest days, a great taste can warm you up in unexpected ways.

This place was super cute bright and fun for summer evening to grab a sweet treat. The milkshakes were amazing. The ice cream were a tad bit small for scoop size but got the job done needing something to eat. The staff was super kind and very funny and made our experience! The pricing is a little steep, but I also feel like you're paying for the brand the aesthetic and also because where they are located it isn't other ice cream shops around that can match the taste, flavor options, and ambience.

My colleague and I were crazing a cold dessert and found this place nearby our Hilton hotel. It's walkable and has plenty of seats if you want to dine in. The selections are very unique and plentiful. Almost all of their selections were on the sweet to very sweet side. The service was friendly, but there was only one staff member when we visited after dinner on a weeknight, and our wait was longer than normal. We were given opportunities for samples, and that helped us narrow down what flavor we wanted. The ice cream shop is bright and roomy, but a little difficult to find when using Apple Maps directions,

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream has arrived in Arlington, VA aka National Landing. Known for their artisanal ice creams, you can get flavors that range from vanilla to the limited edition Hello Kitty ice cream made of white chocolate truffle. Never one to skip on ordering pistachio ice cream, I opted to order my dessert as a milkshake. And boy was it delicious.

I stopped here with my niece and sister after dinner which we all probably should have not. But, who can refuse eating ice cream. In addition, I had never tasted this brand before. No, I'm not in the dark ages. However, I'm further enlightened to the brand now. Nevertheless, I decided on trying something from the vegan ice cream selection which is totally untypical for me. I was surprised with how yummy, smooth, and incredibly flavorful it was. All the staff were so helpful and encouraged sampling of the different flavors of interest. So, I sought to broaden my taste palate and I had the Banana Bread Pudding W/ Fudge. It brought back to when my mother used to cook banana bread pudding in my younger days. If you're in the area please stop by; it's worth the trip.

This was my first time at this location. I got the dulce de leche and honey comb. It was amazing and very dangerous since it is walking distance from my workplace.

I've heard about Van Leeuwen ice cream and how the store front offers a variety of vegan options. Since I was nearby, I decided to give it a try. Employees were very friendly, helpful, and excited to interact which was great! I opted to try the vegan cookies and cream caramel swirl (amazing) and the vegan banana bread pudding (good). I've always been a huge fan of caramel so of course vegan cookies and cream caramel swirl was a favorite. What I liked about the vegan banana bread pudding were the little chunks of bread pudding in the ice cream but that's about it. Not a bad ice cream at all it just didn't meet my expectations and definitely comparing it to the cookies and cream, it was hard to beat! I plan to visit again to try the other vegan flavors. The shop is a nice size (enough room that it doesn't feel claustrophobic even on a crowded day) and has indoor and outdoor seating to enjoy your ice cream. 5/5

You can immediately tell the guy running the pop-up is incredibly passionate about ice cream. He let us sample a few flavors and was genuinely excited to talk through them. I usually gravitate toward berry-flavored ice cream, and I really enjoyed the creamy textures and richness of all the flavors we tried. I ended up ordering a mixed berry scoop. The dude mentioned he mixed some leftover strawberries and blueberries, then threw in some raspberries mixed with a bit of crumble? and went to town. I really liked how well the three berries worked together, but after a few spoonfuls, the richness really set in. My previously transparent spoon actually turned opaque from all the fat in the ice cream, and I started to notice a slightly filmy mouthfeel. That said, the flavors themselves were top-notch, and it's clear the guy truly cares about what he's making. D/Lai also sells pint-sized ice cream, which feels like the perfect guilty-pleasure treat to enjoy at home. Overall, very creamy, very rich, and thoughtfully made ice cream.

New Addition to my Ice Cream Mount Rushmore…read more When a friend heard I was heading into surgery, they sent a Yala ice cream care package via Uber Eats. I honestly didn't realize Uber Eats could deliver high-end ice cream--that is dangerous knowledge for an aficionado with limited self-control. I usually have a strict "Fridays only" rule to self-impose some restraint, but those rules go out the window during recovery. (A quick note: the surgery was nothing serious--just finally fixing a skiing failure from Breckenridge back in February.) To give some context on my palate: 6 out of 10 times, I'm ordering vanilla. I resent when people call it "plain vanilla"--vanilla done right is a complex, detailed flavor all on its own. 2 out of 10 times, I'm ordering something with peanut butter (ever since E.T. 'phoned home', I've had a Reese's problem). For the final 2 out of 10, I'll be adventurous with fruit or something unique. I didn't have much prior knowledge of Greek ice cream traditions, so I did some digging. Traditional Greek ice cream (Kaimaki) is often chewy and elastic, but Yala takes a modern approach for DC. They've hit a "middle ground" texture--creamy like American ice cream but light like gelato. They use A2 dairy from South Mountain Creamery, which makes it incredibly smooth and much easier to digest. After a few days of sampling, Yala is firmly within my ice cream pantheon and established on my "Mount Rushmore" alongside Adrian's Custard in Wisconsin and Oberweis in Chicago. I did my tastings "blind"--meaning I looked at it, but I did not read the foundational ingredients before eating and reviewing. Here are the reviews for the four flavors: Mornings with Thea (Orange Label) My daughter led the charge here, describing it as a "tropical orange cream" that felt like a "wave of summer" with a sophisticated, creamy "winter undertone." My own take was that it tasted like a bougie, orange creamcicle, but with incredible orange chunks. I thought it was candied orange zest, which was new to me and amazing, I also thought I caught hints of peach layered in. I later learned these are traditional Greek orange preserves (spoon sweets) swirled into a yogurt and vanilla base. Yia Mas (Pink Label) I'll be honest: I don't even like cherries, and I first thought these were raspberries. But this was fantastic. It has tart wild cherries swirled into a Greek yogurt and vanilla base. The fruit is succulent and pops against the creamy background. American Dream (Brown Label) A blend of "Papou's Promise" vanilla and "Choco-Yala" chocolate. The chocolate pieces are crisp and have a nice crunch, providing a perfect structural contrast to the smooth vanilla. Mint Chip Mou (Green Label) I've always thought of mint chip as a holiday flavor, but this version felt perfect for March. The color is a soft, spring-like green--not an artificial iridescent glow. When first scooped, the aroma pops into the air, similar to the zest of a a ripe, juicy tangerine when you peel it (the effect, not the the flavor or smell). The mint is light and dreamy rather than a full frontal assault, and the small chocolate pieces are a compliment, not a competitor, providing a nice lingering aftertaste. I was floored to find out that "spring" color comes naturally from spinach! The common thread across all these flavors is that they are well-blended, yet the components stand out independently in the profile. It is a masterpiece of textures and tones; the chocolate or the fruit isn't "mushed" into the ice cream but exists as a separate, wonderful experience floating in an ice cream or yogurt environment. I resisted the Yelp urge to rank these against each other, there were no disappointments. Obviously, Papou's Promise vanilla tops my hit list for next to try, I want to compare Greek Blue Summer against my favorite blueberry pie ice cream from Oberweis, and I'd would love to sample anything peanut butter related if they put something out as a seasonal special! A huge thanks again to my kind friend for the recovery fuel. I'm already planning to organize future ice cream socials here for friends and colleagues once I'm back on my feet.
