    Beautiful weather for Valleyfair!

Always a good time at Valley Fair! Opening weekend and it was busy with school field trips, but that will lessen over the next week or two. The Snoopy world is perfect for my 4 year old and timid 7 year old and my 9 year old goes on all the rides! Such an easy way to entertain your kids. Might as well buy the pass if you're local to get the free parking and I think it's only 2 visits to break even!

Line from the back of the parking lot.

Return of Valleyscare was a complete failure. I've been coming to this park since I was a kid. Never once have I even been in a line to enter either Valleyfair or Valleyscare until last weekend. Yes there are terrible lines within the park, which was true last weekend too. We left home early to get in the park right at opening, 7PM. The park clearly oversold the event and did not have staffing or preparations hammered out. We waited over an hour just to enter the lot and park our car. Traffic was terrible. Then once in the park, to our surprise the line to get in was hundreds of people deep. No separate lines for online ticket purchases or season pass holders. Just when we thought the line was ending, it wrapped further until the very back of the parking lot. No porta potties or scare actors to entertain you in line like other haunted houses offer. People were peeing in bushes and fighting in line. So many people budging and no staff to enforce the out of control line. We waited another hour in line. Once finally inside, we felt pressured to pay another $85 for fast passes because we only had 2.5 hours left in the park. Even with fast passes, we only made it on 2 rides and missed a few of the haunted houses. Employees were letting 20+ people enter haunted houses at once, so the actors could not reset positions and do their jobs. Many looked exhausted, just standing around. These houses used to be actually SCARY. I came out asking "that's it??" each time this year. Valleyscare has not issued any compensation or even an apology to people who paid money for a top notch experience like how Valleyscare was in the past. I have emailed multiple times and left a Google review. I checked again and they have deleted my review. Bots on Google are leaving 5 star nonsense reviews. Your patrons are not that stupid, Valleyfair. So I'm leaving one here for a better chance of it staying up. Take accountability and stop blaming this on people not arriving early enough. You oversold and gave patrons an underwhelming and frustrating experience to say the least. Do better.

With a couple of hockey games cancelled during my vacation thanks to the scariness that is the Omicron variant, I had to find some things to do that were safe. I went on my Groupon app and found Christmas in Color, a drive-thru festive lights show. Perfect! Tickets were originally $40. Groupon had tickets at $29 with an additional discount. I ended up paying $22. Yay! I redeemed my Groupon online on the Christmas in Color site. I got an online ticket with a QR code. I had a 6 pm entrance time. I had no problem taking my time driving over to Valleyfair, which is an amusement park. I had never been here, so it was nice to check out a different look and feel to the place. The park is usually open in the summertime. I pulled up to the window and got a helpful man. He scanned my QR code and gave me a red package. I thanked him and began my drive-thru tour. This lights show was amazing. Christmas music was synchronized with the light displays to create such a fun experience. It was impressive! It was recommended that you set your car's FM channel to 87.9. If your FM reception was shot, you could hear the music through the speakers scattered around Valleyfair. I went on a fairly warm evening for Shakopee. It was 5°C. I had no issues having the window down to take photos. The characters were cute and enjoyable. From sweet gingerbread folks, to penguins and polar bears, you saw the enormous effort and thought made strategically placing them around the drive-thru path. The tunnels were fun to drive through, too. If you're sensitive to blinking or flashing lights, you may want to avoid this event. Otherwise, this tour was a ton of fun while keeping you safe during a pandemic. This tour took me 45 minutes to get through everything. None of us were going at a crazy pace. I was happy paying what I did for this tour. I didn't open the red package while taking this tour. When I got back to my hotel room, I took a look at it. The man gave me the VIP package. I had ordered the regular one. Maybe the place needed to get rid of them. The package contained 3D glasses, reindeer noses, candy cane-like lights, Hershey Kisses and mints, a car air freshener, and string Christmas lights that you wear around your neck. I am glad that I didn't put on a pair of paper 3D glasses while driving because they were flimsy. I couldn't figure out how to get the reindeer noses to light up. There wasn't a button or a way to switch them on, which was puzzling. I did manage to bring the air freshener, and candy cane and string lights home. They work and are fun! Christmas in Color was highly enjoyable. I'd do it again if I'm in town during the Christmas holidays again. (20)

Avoid Saturdays throughout the year. Now off season non-summer you don't have many options. Sundays are less crowded. During the summer middle of week is always best.

Wild Thing lives up to it's name. I almost quoted the Troggs to start this review but I couldn't…read morelive with myself so I went back and took it out. (It still applies though.) Running parallel to Highway 101, Wild Thing clearly announces itself as the headliner of Valleyfair. It was the first Morgan coaster, to my knowledge, that I've ridden, and I was a bit leery, thinking it might be annoying rough like old school Arrow coasters can be. While not buttery smooth like some more modern coasters are, Wild Thing passed my test in the turbulence department with flying colors. It has just enough shakiness to keep things interesting. Even the back row was completely enjoyable. The first hill, 207 feet, is a doozy, but the airtime off the second hill was the highlight for me. There was more airtime riding at the front, too, which I found interesting. It was a brisk day when we went to Valley fair with a light rain, and this green monster almost lost my gray winter skullie cap to a mighty updraft. On one of our 4 rides the rain picked up a bit and stung as it hit my face while we barreled through the course. That was actually enjoyable, in a strange masochistic way. The bunny hills after the mid course brake run (more like a 3/4ths course brake run) are a blast and the multi-hill tunnel at the end sets you up perfectly for mugging for the on-ride camera. Even if you don't shell out for key chains and whatnot don't miss stopping at the photography booth on your way out. I've never seen funnier on-ride photos. After just one ride, you can see where that flash in the dark is and do some crazy poses yourself. Wild Thing was never much more than a station wait. (Our first time riding the queue stretched just a little beyond the station.) One of the ride ops was a bit of a hard ass. He tried to walk of shame some kid off the train even after the guy with the measuring stick said she passed. Looking like a sheepish shoplifter, she passed again, barely, and the whole station erupted in cheers and applause. That same hard ass said I couldn't reride if there was anybody waiting at all, even if there was empty rows, after another employee had given moving to an empty row her blessing. Booo! He also made me take my hat off and, okay, he was probably right about that. Wild Thing is nearly flawless. My sole critique is that the transitions between the elements in the middle might be a little too long. That massive turn around looks really cool, and there's some nice hand chopper moments in the ensuing straight away but it's a little long between hills. Wild Thing puts this place on the map. We rode it 4 times, but I could have easily went for a dozen.

Excalibur - Souped up mine train coaster which has INSANE laterals and RMC EJECTOR. Quite on the short side but it PACKS A PUNCH. 5 stars indeed.

It has a decent first hill and lots of fun twistiness after. It was a cool, slightly rainy day when my friends and I visited Valleyfair and we really got a nice breeze as Excalibur whipped us around. Excalibur has handsome trains with a nice logo and a cozy spot at the back of the park. (Maybe a bit too cozy. Rumor has it ol' Ex might get the axe so VF can expand Soak City and give the water park it's own entrance plaza and parking lot.) The ride ops on Excalibur were great on the day we visited. Maybe it's because it was opening weekend and the season was new and fresh, but they were doing a great job trying to not send trains out with empty seats and joking around to boot. One dude gave one rider a hard time for being a Cowboys fan and it was priceless. "Enjoy your ride on Excalibur everybody! Everybody except YOU, Cowboys fan! " (Do not reprimand this worker, Cedar Fair corporate types. That sh*t was hilarious!) I liked Excalibur but truth be told wouldn't be too upset if Valleyfair took it down. Well, maybe if it made lines for Renegade significantly longer. Cause Valleyfair has another coaster built atop wood that is exhilarating in a way Excalibur only hints at. We almost rode Excalibur a second time, mostly to enjoy the ride ops schtick but opted instead to to strap into the awesomeness that is Renegade. Get your Last Call on here at Excalibur but it's not marathon worthy like Renegade or Wild Thing.

Probably since I rode in the middle of the train as it was getting late in the day and I still wanted to ride the then new Valravn. Well, let me tell you riding in the front car makes a big difference on these impulse coasters. Seeing everything, reaching the maximum height on at least one end of the short course, it wasn't enough to put Steel Venom into 5 star range, but I wouldn't have minded riding a second or third time. The back might be extra fun, too. When the holding brake gets applied on the back arm of the course near the end of the ride it's a jarring, exciting sensation and it seems it would have maximum effect there. We sat watching SV while waiting for Delirious and the structure visibly sways when the train passes after the holding brake gets released! It took us awhile to ride Steel Venom as it was shut down for clean up after somebody blew chunks on it, and that in itself is an indication this is an intense ride. Too short, but fun. Steel Venom isn't top tier like Wild Thing or Renegade, but I'd rate it as the third best coaster at Valleyfair.
