Although this is not a Manhattan hot spot, full of A-listers, Valhalla is a reliable bar to go drinking with your buddies. 9th Avenue in Hell's Kitchen is jammed full of a wide variety of restaurants, but it is a bit short on bars. Enter Valhalla. Valhalla is almost always busy on weekend nights, and is a no frills spot, with plenty of space, loud music, and relatively cheap booze. They have a cheap appetizer / late night menu as well. Valhalla also has a huge deer list. I don't drink beer, but my buddies were pumped and ordered some weird stuff that I have never heard of - hey, as long as they are happy, I am happy. In addition to lots of booze, the service was very good as well - drinks were turned around quickly. read more

A cute little pub, you can't go wrong. Heavier on the beer options like a true bar BUT I appreciate the small array of cocktail options they included (and wine obviously). It was a very loud atmosphere as a heads up, which isn't necessarily bad, but more of a heads up on what to expect. There is table and bar seating and you can order food as well which is always a plus when you are drinking a lot. read more

Cute place, but didn't seem to have that much seating. The host getting us drinks was very distracted, had to ask questions many many times for him to get it. And we saw a cockroach run across the floor. The old fashioned was delicious though! read more

Came here on Saturday to grab some lunch and watch the World Cup. Lots of TVs so great place to watch the games. Strong craft beer list with a lot of options from the US as well as German, Belgian and other international varieties. They had 3 or 4 beers on Nitro as well. They had a lunch special for $14 that includes food and a beer. I got the beef sliders which came with french fries. Solid bar food - the french fries were crispy and tasted fresh versus frozen. Relaxed atmosphere, decent food and good beer list make this a great place to watch a game. read more

These guys have a lot of beer. The list is extensive: plenty of draught and bottled beers. They definitely emphasize the US craft beers, but there's a little of everything. As a tourist, I like that they marked the brewed beers. Service was fantastic. We went on a Thursday night, and engaged in fun banter with the people working behind the bar. The bartenders are very laid-back and knowledgeable. I seem to remember the music selection to also be very good. The noise level is perfect, and the people-watching was pretty good as well. I didn't get food here, but maybe I will next time I come visit the Big Apple! ;) read more

like everywhere, too many IPAs. Feh! Other choices are good ones. 1st bartender was paying attention, 2nd was asleep at the wheel. Small bar menu of OK food. read more

Great place with a Nordic Viking feel. Perfect to celebrate a birthday of someone from Minnesota. Beers are definitely cheaper than the liquor ($14!) read more

Over 40 beers on tap, mostly ones that you probably never heard of. This place is laid back atmosphere and has friendly service. Great spot for a beer. They have the 1 liter boot which is $13 for beer, $20 for the beer and the boot, and $10 for a refill. Don't be thrown off by the $8 french fries. They are fresh cut and awesome. This place can get kind of loud, so not good for anything intimate. read more

This is a great bar for craft beer and cocktails! We were here for a coworker's farewell party on a week night and it was jam packed. The bar isn't too big but we managed to find a table for a group. It is quite popular because it is not touristy nor overpriced. It is a decent neighborhood bar with great food options such as artichoke dips and wings. If you like craft beer, this bar has some good selections to offer. read more

Good vibe. Young professionals crowd this place. If you like beer, it has an a pretty good selection. German, UK, Irish, even Iceland beers. Angry hour! 1 am to 4 am. Also serve 50 cent wings from 1 am to 2 am. read more

We chose this place to have some food and draft beer on a Friday evening during our bus trip to NYC. Turned out to be a great choice. Food menu is very small, so you don't come here for a full meal. I had chicken sliders which weren't bad, and the BBQ sauce was awesome. Fries were great. Hubby had a soft pretzel with cheese sauce and devoured all of it. Service was nothing short of superb. The young lady who took care of us was attentive, friendly, and a perfect example of the service industry. We couldn't decide what beer to have because the list was so long (which is a good thing!). So, she offered to bring us a few samples of ones she liked for us to try. How nice! The place was packed. We had a table by the window so we could watch people go by. It was a great way to spend part of a Friday evening. You can tell locals come here, meeting up after work for drinks and fun. Popular place for a good reason. Tons of beer to choose from, so your palate won't get bored. There was even a draft beer from Iceland. Nifty. I'd go back here if I ever came back to the city. I'd recommend it indeed. read more

Now this is the place I would, and have recommended to people in search of a good bar with a great beer selection. Even though I'm not a huge beer drinker. It's very laid back and feels more like an indoor beer garden so it's great in the summer. read more

After two plus years of Valhalla being bookmarked, I finally stumbled in one glorious Thursday night. There is an array of eclectic beers on tap with a wait staff to impress. I always appreciate a bartender who will listen to what I like to drink and offer me a suggestion. It's a great way to strike up some conversation & try something new. Don't come to Valhalla expecting to watch the game, but come here ready to try a new beer & make friends with your neighbor. read more

The coolest new fact that I've recently discovered is that New York has amazing craft beers. Oh and that apparently I like IPAs. Such a mind blowing fact for this stout loving girl! Valhalla is my new favorite neighborhood bar. Guys, they get Grimm ales! Also, their selection of beers is enormous and impressively delicious. Great place to chill and enjoy a cold one especially on a humid summer's day. Only downside is that it can get pretty loud like the couple next to you is screaming their conversation because otherwise they wouldn't be able to hear one another. read more

One of my favorite bars on 9th Ave. I had my first legal drink here a few months ago, and I've been back at least once every week since. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed. If you've read the other views, you know they have an excellent selection of beers that are consistently switched up. It's because of Valhallah that my beer-palate has expanded. The bartenders are always super sweet, and willing to provide suggestions of I'm not sure what I want/if I want to try something new. The music is solid. The spinach and artichoke dip is ammaazzinngg. I love that it's open until 4AM, even during weekdays. I try to avoid this place during prime hours on weekends because of the large crowds. But, it's one of my favorite places to go to for a quick drink with friends, bring dates, or as a final stop before going home for the evening. read more

Oh, dear Valhalla. Dear, sweet Valhalla. If you enjoy beer, any kind of beer, GO NOW. We went randomly before the LCD show at Terminal 5 and were not only pleasantly surprised that they welcomed LCD fans, but the wall of beers they had on tap. Ballast Point Sculpin?? Gnomegang?? Yes, yes, YES! The interior was small, but I loved the wooden tables/benches, the ceiling fans were nothing like I had ever seen, and the beer - did I mention the beer? They weren't serving any food when we arrived, but the lovely lady who was bartending recommended the pizza joint 2 doors up. Hole in the wall, but SO DELISH! Good nyc pizza paired with amazing beer = WINNING. We loved this place so much, we walked in the rain to get another pint or two. There were quite a few concert-goers that followed, and it was a pretty happening place for 1am on a Wednesday night. Next time we're at Terminal 5, or anywhere within walking distance, my mouth will water knowing Valhalla is nearby. read more

Valhalla is a solid neighborhood beer bar, great for stopping in for a beer with friends or a start to the night. It has an extensive and diverse beer selection, a long bar, and a decent amount of table seating for a relatively small space. I've been coming here every couple of months for the past few years, and service has always been great - friendly and quick with orders. The food is nothing to write home about, but not bad either. But maybe don't come to a beer bar just for the food? read more

Very decently priced for a cocktail! I just told the bartender to make me a fruity mix, as I listed exactly what I wanted. He got it downn and it was super good! Only $6, too, when it would normally be around $8-10. They also had blueberry beer for $5, which is what most people around me were getting. Came here for a bday, but I wouldn't normally come here (just because I'm not much of a bar person). Wish it were bigger, but there were nice coat hooks to hang up your outerwear while sitting and chatting with others. I did like the current hip hop songs playing in the background, though. A small venue, but a great place to just catch up. Not a place for the decor, but just a neighboring venue for a chill night. read more

Some friends and I came here for happy hour and had a decent time. Decor: It's a pretty standard bar setup with a couple high-tops, a couple picnic-type tables, and a good-sized bar. The beer menu, right above the bar, can't be missed and their specials are clearly labeled. Bathroom: It's a pretty standard bar bathroom, a bit small. Staff: Our waiter was nice and quick to take our orders (drinks and food). He also made himself available several times for drink refills, etc. Food/Drinks: We started with a round of different beers and then had a few apps from there: Pretzels (pretty good), nachos (decent), and wings (pretty tasty). All-in-all the food was pretty standard bar food, it was good but nothing that blew us away. Value: Our final bill was about what we expected it to be. The craft beer selection is what sets this place apart from any other bar, but even that won't keep this place unique for long. I don't know that we'll be back simply due to a lack of "wow factor." read more

Summary: Beer flights have plenty of options but are a bit pricey at five samples for $23. Cool environment. Friendly service. Food choices are pretty limited. Beer by the glass is either $8 or $9. My wife and I wanted to get a drink somewhere near our hotel before grabbing some pizza and heading to see Aladdin. Valhalla came up as a new establishment with pretty good reviews so we decided to check it out. Inside, the decor is viking-esque (as one would expect). Lots of taps lined the wall and a couple of friendly servers stood behind the bar and wandered the tables taking orders. We perused the menu and inquired about flights. The server said they offered any five 5oz tastings for $23. Not a stellar price, so my wife and I worked with the server to pick five to share. Here are the ones we tried: St. Klippenstein - Strong Belgian Left Hand Milk Stout - Smooth and tasty on Nitro Founders Oatmeal Stout - Pretty good Cream Ale - Creamy but a little underwhelming Stone Bitter Chocolate Stout - Strong and on par with the name After the flight, we each ordered a glass of our favorite. All in all, it's a decent place to get a craft beer. The prices are a bit high and the bathroom (at least the men's) is incredibly small with the urinal in easy viewing range from anyone that opens the door from the bar. I appreciate the desire to maximize efficiency, but be warned :-) read more

This is a decent bar but it is missing something in the area of atmosphere. They have a good selection of craft beers and they have good specials especially after 1am when drafts go to 5 bucks. The bartenders were also attentive and pleasant. As far as atmosphere, I can't quite put my finger on it but it is missing something. There are not enough TVs so the place sorta feels empty. Also it is lacking an identity. Is it a beer hall? Is it a sports bar? A tavern? A pub? Besides this we had a nice time and would come back. read more

this place is great!!! so much fun and lovely bartender! great selection of beer - try the kiwi sour beer you wont regret ;)

Valhalla was a pleasant surprise. They're known for their large selection of craft beers here, both American and European types available, while only a special few are available for happy hour. They allowed my friend to sample a few beers before ordering, and he thought the one he got was not bad. It's spacious, with a long standing bar and plenty of tables and stools all around. Service is eh, ambiance is Brooklyn-esque, and food could be better for a bar located in food-obsessed Hell's Kitchen. Dem nachos let me down. read more

Great beer selection and a good vibe, plus knowledgeable staff who want to help you find a great beer should have made this a 5-Star review. However, they gave one of my party a hard time for having her service animal with her until they went into the back and googled the ADA. How hard is it to be decent people and obey ADA laws? So, 3-stars it is. read more

Gets really loud and jam packed but is rather fun. Nice interior and a good selection of draft beer choices. I didn't get the bad service thing that people were talking about. Any time we stepped back up to the bar to get drinks the servers were on it really quickly. It had a cool open atmosphere and nice wood interior. The prices were on the decent end for NYC. Cannot attest to the food. It was disorientingly full of people at 2:45am, also. Weird mix of down to earth and clubby crowd but that might have just been the time of night. read more

Tough place to review, love that Valhalla is something other than another Irish bar in midtown, but dislike that so many hipsters feel the same way. But.....bring your flannel and dark rimmed glasses. Beard not mandatory but helpful. Expect to listen to Lumineers or Mumford and sons. Yes, Valhalla is a hipster bar. Valhalla is a beer bar for sure with a huge selection of draft beers. Very small, simple place. Bar on west wall. Nice, worn-looking wood bar with no rail. Bar back only contains taps and bottle shelves (middle) and a chalkboard tap list. Wood flooring. Simple decorations throughout. Picnic tables on north wall. High tables in between the bar & tables. Limited menu, but most items are very good. Hipster music. Decent place to grab a beer or two and nothing offending in the place, it's just simply an hipster crowd. read more

Love this place! Always my go to bar when I'm in the area. The bartenders are super friendly and proactive. Happy hour cuts sort of short at 6pm M-F and they have minimal draft options to choose from for it, but the bar scene and atmosphere makes up for it. They also have a thing called "angry hours" that's a steal from 1am-4am so you can get a good deal if you're out late here. Their prices are a little bit higher than some of the bars surrounding them, but they're also not a dive bar so that's the price you pay for a quality bar and service which is worth the extra $1-2 to me. read more

Stopped in here last night before a show for a quick bite and a couple of drinks. It was my first time coming here and clearly it's a popular spot because it was packed! We fortunately grabbed two seats on the bar and ordered some food and drinks. They have a HUGE selection beer from everywhere. There is German beer, Icelandic beer, or even local beer around the city. The food is ok as it's typical bar food without a huge selection. The only con I can think of is that the food was served with plastic plates and plastic utensils so it seems kinda cheap. Other than that it's a great place to meet up with friends or coworkers for a couple of drinks! read more

I have been to many pubs with limited food menu but this pub has the most boring and carb filled menu ever. It makes me not wanna drink here because there's nothing I can eat on the menu but some over fried bar food. It has so much potential. It's in a great neighborhood. But I think the manager or owner doesn't know what they are doing. This place deserves a better menu. read more

Was looking for a laid back place in the area to chill with friends. I like the atmosphere but not sure I'll return. Pros: Great beer selection, maybe the best in the area. The tables aren't packed too tightly so there was still room for the four of us without feeling cramped. Cons: The waitress kept trying to upsell us shots and t-shirts. Not only was it annoying it just felt tacky. What could be a cute neighborhood spot seemed to only want to cater to tourists. Too bad, because I was hoping this could be a regular spot to grab a beer with friends but the t-shirts and shots being pushed on us kind of ruined it. read more

This spacious bar hosts a huge menu of craft beers that you might find hard to find elsewhere. From a great selection of local New York beers to a respectable collection of European brews, there's a ton to choose from here. There are something like 40 beers on tap. Great selection of craft beers. We can definitely recommend the Little Drop of Sunshine IPA. (Yes!)

In Scandinavian mythology, Valhalla is is a majestic, enormous hall located in Asgard, ruled over by the god Odin, where the dead join the masses of those who have died in combat. In American reality, Valhalla is an all-around amazing bar. It's a large space, with a long bar, friendly bartenders, laid back clientele, picnic tables, German inspired finger food, over 30 international beer selections on tap, and another 40-something bottled beer choices from around the globe. Essentially, Valhalla is any beer lover's dream bar. It doesn't matter if your favorite beer is from United States, Mexico, Germany, France, Belgium, Japan, Scotland, the Netherlands, or wherever. In the end, you'll have fun trying to find your favorite. So much so, it might make you want to sing. A-ah-ahh-ah! A-ah-ahh-ah! We come from the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands, to fight the horde and sing and cry: Valhalla, I am coming... For those who do not recognize the amazing awesomeness they just read, those are the opening lyrics to Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song." It's about the Vikings, or the first immigrants, coming to the Americas. But after further review, I think this song is about rocking hard, being awesome, and making the Beatles - a pansy ass boy band with bad hair - look like the the 60's version of the Jonas Brothers. Yes, I just said Led Zeppelin is better than the Beatles. Please feel free to visit Valhalla, have a beer or two or five, and discuss just how right I am. read more

A drink at Valhalla is vindication that decent bars actually do exist on our fair island. Not to say that every other bar sucks, but they do have their place in the pecking order. For example: The Weekender - A nice club or lounge. Mucho expensive drinks, beautiful people, and probably a line outside. Fun, but not an everyday affair (unless you're my hedge fund roommate) The Dive - Pretty much self explanatory. A place to pickle your liver with cheap beer, crummy quality liquor, and sketchy people. Fun, but a self destructive habit. The Douche - Anywhere in Turtle Bay or Murray Hill. (See Tonic East, Sutton Place, etc). I take my friends from the Midwest here while I ease them into the Manhattan bar scene. The Faux Irish Pub - It's like Turtle Bay vomited over the rest of the city. The Everything Else In Between - The magical sweet spot. A place where the true alcoholic can drop by on a Tuesday night, and find solace with other drinkers. A place where the douche factor is low, the prices are reasonable, and the bartenders are friendly. Valhalla fits into this category. Aside from the dark wood interior, muted ambiance and encyclopedic draft beer selection, I love the fact that the place is reserved enough to carry on a conversation, and sports a spacious bar front (surface area is important whilst trying to ordering a drink). A nice spot for a weeknight casual drink. read more

We ran into Valhalla as we were looking fo a happy hour in Hell's Kitchen. Happy hour was just getting started, so it was still fairly empty and they had a table big enough to accommodate all 7 of us. They even brought out an extra bench so we weren't crammed together. In a nutshell, Valhalla is a beer bar, but you can definitely order other drinks here. There was a diverse selection of beers from around the world -- beers on tap, beers in a bottle and they also have a series of beer flights so you can sample their selection. I had a nice, cold, delicious Stella, while others in our group opted for more fruity Lambics. The bar's open layout was spacious but could also get really noisy when it's filled up with people. There's a couple flat screens that actually show HD programming, not stretchy SD like at many places. Big ups also for the faux sculpture of a topless viking woman. :-) Also, thought it looked fairly new inside, we had managed to sit ourselves under a water leak and didn't find out about it until one of our party got dripped on. So if you make it over to Valhalla, look up before you sit down. read more
