This feels like a local bar in Hells kitchen. I found it while staying a few blocks away about 10 years ago. Luckily on this trip, my hotel was similarly as close so I made sure to go there. Great local bar with excellent food. I visited twice. First time was lively with trivia, and the second was a bit more calm, but with plenty of personality. The bar tenders are attentive and quick with a joke or a light of your smoke. Perfect atmosphere with a combination of music and sports. The Viking them is great without being overbearing. I was the plus one of a friend's mini reunion and we ended up at this place when no one wanted the night to end. Although this place is likely best known for their beer selection and bar bites, we went with cocktails. The cocktails were strong, service was fast and it seemed like the prices were fair although I didn't pick up the tab. They do offer a seemingly nice little happy hour but you'll have to catch it before 8pm. Bathrooms were clean and there were lots of televisions if you want to catch a game. They have front sliding doors that open onto the sidewalk which was perfect for a nice breeze when we were there. Atmosphere was very relaxed and casual. The decor is kitschy and there is a lot of it. I would definitely return to try the food and see if the cocktails are just as strong during happy hour. The next bar we visited on our pub crawl in Hell's Kitchen was Valhalla. It was a super fun spot and we all loved our visit. Located on the corner of a block, all the side windows were open to the pleasant coolness of springtime. Despite being packed, we got a table toward the front relatively quickly and I ordered a flight of fun beers from around the area. The theme of the decor was Nordic/Viking, which was a fun vibe. It was a welcoming place, with friendly servers and bartenders. The digital menus were easy to read, so it was fun to choose a bunch of great beers. To me, what stood out the most was the service from the staff. Service goes a long way and this staff didn't disappoint. My brother arrived before I did and he snagged whatever table he could find. The table was located near the entrance. An employee approached him and moved him to a better table. Every time someone flagged down the waitress, she would attend to them and if she was busy she would politely ask to come back in 5 minutes (she always came back). The crowd was a mix of coworkers attending happy hour (I saw a sign where they called it angry hour) and groups of men watching whatever game is on at the time. I'm not much of a beer person but I was able to order a gin & tonic no problem. Great little pub! I went out with some friends and one of them recommended this place sine they live a few blocks away. For a Friday night it wasn't too busy and we were able to get a table right away. The service was great and the waiters were really attentive to us. I had the sliders and soda since I was finished drinking for the night by the time we got there. The food was good, nothing too special. My friends enjoyed their beers and shots. It wasn't too loud and we were able to have a conversation without having to yell at each other like at some other spots. I think we were one of the last two groups there that night. Stopped in on Friday night arriving in the middle of the holiday weekend, the place was packed, standing room only, but we lucked out as two guys were leaving and gave us their seats at the bar. Then it was on to selecting a beer, as a craft beer fan from Cincinnati, I enjoy a great craft beer and dug into the menu of 48 beers on tap, but was hard to decide. Gail was our bartender very friendly, generous and helped me with my beer selections despite how busy the bar was that night. I started with Simple Sour from Peekskill Brewing very refreshing after my travels to the city. Then for my next beer she recommended Pseudo Sue from Toppling Goliath Brewery in Iowa, this was delicious Pale Ale with just enough bite with grapefruit, citrus and mango flavor. We were getting hungry so we ordered the homemade spinach and artichoke dip and the fried pickles. The food arrived in minutes and was hot out of the kitchen, the pickles were so hot, we had to wait to eat, but dug right into the dip just right to go with our beers. I liked the Pseudo Sue so much, I had another and then went with another of Gail's selections Sip of Sunshine IPA from Lawson's Finest Liquids in Stratford, CT Valhalla is great bar in NYC in Hell's Kitchen neighborhood - definitely a must visit in NYC for any craft beer fan & ask for Gail, she's rockstar behind the bar! read more

What a pleasant surprise. We stopped in for a light lunch on a sunny Sunday afternoon and this fit the bill. A huge variety of draft beers and a simple menu of about ten items, yes only ten items. But...they have a lunch special for $14 that you get a menu item and your choice of draft for $14. Funny thing is, most menu items are $14 so basically the beer is free. Great service. Fun decor with very sturdy wooden, picnic type tables and high tops with stools. TVs for sports fans. A relaxing, comfortable place. Great chicken and burger sliders and really good artichoke dip. Valhalla offers a wealth of excellent and unique beer options in an area with a dearth of craft beer bars, along with a standard and passable bar food menu with the important virtue of being offered late (until 1-2am most nights). Setting is pretty cool, and it's a nice size, neither cramped nor epic--like a mini beer hall. Perhaps it's the Manhattan locale as opposed to the Brooklyn craft spots I frequent, but I don't quite feel as home here. Find the service a bit distant, and at times condescending--my wife and her friend felt particularly so as female beer aficionado patrons. In other words, don't expect much discussion of flavors/styles--come to the bar with your order ready. Despite some diffident/questionable service, if you are in this neighborhood and hankering for quality beer options, you won't find a better option. Food is overly greasy/fatty, even by bar food standards--fine if you're already a few beers in and want a snack, but I wouldn't go out of my way to plan a meal here. (Fried pickles are generally one of my favorites, but these just feel like a grease bomb.) read more
