I've lived in Tacoma for over 10 years, and somehow have only tried Valhalla coffee for the first time, last week. I ordered an iced vanilla latte and my goodness was it amazing. I'm glad I haven't tried this coffee until now, otherwise I'd be bankrupt from going here daily. I always can tell when a coffee shop makes good coffee based on how long it takes for them to make my drink. The coffee beans itself were perfectly balanced and all the different flavors and notes really stood out. The atmosphere is a great welcoming, and warm environment. A mixture of those walk in and go coffee drinkers, and those sitting down reading a book or working. I have not updated this review for a long time. While Valhalla will always go down as one of my top Tacoma Coffee places I have to add a few notes. I love the artistry of this place. The coffee is roasted to near perfection. Its rich and full of amazing flavors. You can feel the love of coffee in every sip. With that being said, if you are in a hurry and you just want a cup of coffee this is unfortunately not the place to go. During the pandemic I found myself looking for other coffee and the reason was while I still love their coffee it was very difficult to go here just to grab to beans and get stuck in the coffee line. The processes they have is 100% opposite of Starbucks where they are focused on quantity, Valhalla is focused on quality. This is the reason I fell in love with them. Remove the corporate bland coffee and get some great local flavor. But on a cold day when they didnt have indoor seating and I just wanted a pound of coffee it was very difficult if you didnt get there at the right time. I have since then found an alternative place that is closer and easier for me to stop by and grab a bag of beans and a cup of joe to go. It works for the most part, but I do miss going here and grabbing a pound of coffee I did make a recent return trip which is what prompted this update. The process is still a little slow. Its not bad, but you just need to have the correct mindset going in to visit. If you want a quick cup to go. I cant recommend this place unless you hit the right time when they are not busy. If you are looking for a rich deep coffee experience and you dont mind waiting, talking, working, etc. Its hard to suggest another tacoma spot. The coffee is damn good. The staff seems to love coffee and puts quality into every cup. Plus I think the bag of beans is a full pound and that is actually quite a bit cheaper than the place I have been visiting recently. I still recommend and this place will go down as a favorite spot, but just come ready to chill a bit. read more

To be honest as a coffee snob I thought other yelpers were exaggerating a bit before I took my first sip. I was so wrong and it's a different type of coffee that I've never had before. Two travel nurses from the Midwest, after a six-month stint in Tacoma, have FOREVER been converted to die-hard Valhalla Coffee fans for life!!! Valhalla holds a special place in our hearts. We used to stop in, prior to the start of "Armageddon", and always liked the vibe & delicious coffee. Their antique roaster was really neat to see- and makes the place smell delectable after they've been roasting! Since the shutdown, we've been placing online orders to get our ground coffee fix. Valhalla Coffee was a great discovery. The employees are all super friendly and informative, eager to give suggestions. I had a lovely latte with a cool design in the foam, which is always a plus. Their pastry shelves were loaded with all sorts of goodies and using willpower I was able to pass it up, but my friend enjoyed his first one so much that he decided on a second dessert. It is located in an older building on Sixth Avenue across from what used to be named Jason Lee. I think it would be interesting for the patrons to be able to read a little about the history of the building, with accompanying photos. It might take a little bit of effort at the Tacoma Public Library to research it. My friend and I are on a "World Coffee Tour" and visit a different coffee shop once a week. I would describe Valhalla as my addiction and my affliction. It satisfies the drug craving while providing an altogether sensual experience. They have blends for every need. The oat milk is our where you can get at it, and they don't charge extra like S***bucks ancery other coffee shop. I beans there; they have several strengths. Today I had a pour over that was high-octane. I feel it working. The counter help is excellent. They make conversation and know their stuff. It is a coffee lovers shop. The atmosphere is sublime. Good prices for beverages, but over-priced retail beans and apparel (in my opinion). AMAZING coffee!!!!! I'm a serious coffee snob and there are very few places that make coffee that I truly love. But this was literally the best mocha I've E-V-E-R had. I live in Portland, but if I lived in Tacoma this would absolutely be my favorite go-to coffee spot! I was extremely excited to bring my adult son in this store today to show him the roaster and explain how wonderful I THOUGHT this small company was...until I was treated horribly by an employee the moment I stepped in today. What a horrible experience right from the moment I stepped in. I was so positive to the employee and explained my excitement and all she could do was tell me to leave the store immediately with my dog. I explained to her it was a service animal and it clearly had a vest on..she proceeded to say they had reasonable accommodation OUTSIDE on the bench. This was horrible customer service and not honouring a person service under ADA. She didn't say hello, welcome or smile or even allow me to place a coffee order. I will be placing a complaint to ADA and I am extremely disappointed with this business today. I will now NEVER buy or refer anyone to this business, as they do not support people with disabilities and/or train their employees how to respectfully talk to customers in general. read more

Great coffee and amazing service! The lady who helped us today was very friendly and patient to us 1st timers. They have a variety of options for coffee: espresso, macchiato, latte, americano, you name it. Flavors come in vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, chocolate and I think there were a few others. This location is a small, cozy cafe with street parking available right in the front. Since our group did not have the time to drive all the way to Seattle, I did a quick Yelp search on coffee shops near the Tacoma area and the search result led our group to this small coffee shop. Valhalla Coffee originally started in 2004 and the shop hand-roasted coffee beans in small batches. You can purchase various in-house coffee beans such as the Viking Blend (60% Sumatra and 40% French roast), Ethiopian Harrar (rich and smooth with notes of blueberry and a hint of chocolate), etc. *** Latte (8 oz, $3.25): I can't say there was that one particular aroma that really stood out, but overall it was a pretty solid latte with a nice layer of foam. Overall it was an above average latte comparing with other lattes that I have tried in Los Angeles. *** I can see why some reviewers consider Valhalla Coffee as the best coffee in town and this is also a great place to stop by if you want to buy bags of coffee beans for your friends and coworkers. read more
