Wow. Yum. Driving through on a road trip, we stopped for dinner. Shared the hillock hummus - the grilled veggies for dipping were unexpected stars. Well....we were passing thru and found this on Yelp. It was a Thursday evening at around 7. Only one person sitting at the bar. Restaurant completely empty. Waitress was very pleasant. Menu somewhat limited. My husband loves meatloaf so that was an easy choice, however they would not allow him to substitute anything else for the Mac n cheese. Really? Disappointing, especially for a $22 plate. I tried the "chicken cornbread pot pie". This is NOT a pot pie....it was a chowder / soup with corn meal crumbles on the top. It was tasty, But for $17....? Today a local took a group of us here for lunch. The interior is small but appeared clean. We were seated promptly. Our server was friendly. Service was slow. Menu comprises burgers, Sandwiches, salads, wraps.... I went with the Hangover burger which was today's special. Half lb burger patty on an everything brioche bun with beer cheese, fried onions and topped with a fried egg. Ordered medium got med well. Not the biggest deal it wasn't dry. The egg was over cooked and not runny which defeats the whole purpose of putting a fried egg on a burger. The onion strings were greasy. The burger came with waffles fries. My fries were cold and hard. Most everyone else got wraps, sandwiches or a Cuban panini. Sandwiches are served with chips and salsa: The house made tortilla chips were way over cooked to the point of burned on a couple guys plates and most reported they were way over salted with a house salt mixture. My meal 15.00- plus tax The server brought our tickets out in enclosed canisters. She still managed to charge my food to someone else. My card was charged his bill which was cheaper. I gave him cash to make up the difference. Seems like a good concept just sloppy and poorly executed. Maybe they couldn't handle the crowd. They were near capacity around noon. My burger had good flavor just needed the fried onions to be drained, freshly cooked fries and the egg cooked properly. I wasn't wild about the bun, but that's a personal preference. If you're going so bold with a bread choice wouldn't be bad to have a plain option. I can't be the only one that thinks brioche is way over used and overrated. Aren't a ton of options in the area. Fresh, local ingredients. A creative menu. An eye towards local character. All great things in a restaurant. What's unusual about it though? It's in Wheeling. West Virginia. Yes, that Wheeling-the one with fried food on every plate. Self-proclaimed Vagabond Chef Matt Walsh (I recommend checking out his website- interesting read) has returned to Wheeling, in his very own Vagabond Kitchen. At a recent chili cook off, I loved his take on a classic chili, so I was very excited to give the Kitchen a try. Definitely not a disappointment! We enjoyed a good, but unexciting artichoke dip as a starter, but it was all up from there. I had a wonderfully seasoned lemon pepper chicken sandwich, flavored with grilled peppers and onions and sriracha mayo. The lemon flavor was delicate, yet somehow not overpowered by the sriracha. A very good sandwich! The highlight was the side of chips and salsa. The salsa was spicy and flavorful-very clearly homemade by someone who cares about good salsa! My husband enjoyed a pulled pork sandwich, which he declared one of the best he's ever had-not overpowered by BBQ sauce, as so many are. As of now, they are still working from an opening menu, so there are not many options at the moment. I do hope to come back soon to try a locally sourced beefalo or lamb burger. It's BYOB, which is a definite plus. Service was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I hope it catches on soon! At 6 PM on a Saturday, we and one other table were the only people in the restaurant (located on the first floor of the historic McClure Hotel.) The space itself was a little dated and depressing, other than local photographer Bennett McKinley's wonderful prints of everyday Wheeling people, titled Meet me in the Alley. Given the overall fun and creative vibe of the place, I wouldn't be surprised to see a new take on the decor in the near future. Smoked provolone cheese, salty crisp bacon, sriracha mayo creamy zesty, pickled jalapenos, gorgeous ripe tomatoes, romaine lettuce, brioche bun. The ingredient quality was unparalleled. This place is great! We're Pittsburghers who stopped here for dinner one day while we were in Wheeling and this place may just be worth the drive for us to come back again. Everything is fresh and obviously prepared in house. The green bean fries are fantastic; the tzatziki sauce really makes them something special. All of our salads were fresh and crisp and the steak was super tender and flavorful. We were a little disappointed that there were so few people in there on a late Saturday afternoon. We had watched Chef Matt compete on Guy's Grocery Games and I was really impressed...so much so that made a point of going to Vagabond Kitchen on a trip to Wheeling. The staff was wonderful, and the featured burger was his "Total Eclipse of the Art". That was the best burger I have ever had and the Garlic Truffle Waffle fries were impeccable. I can't wait to go back again for his next creation. My only regret is that they don't carry a non-alcoholic beer. Perhaps a local brewery could create a special IPA just for that purpose? read more

Hi guys - this fantastic restaurant is still working out a few of the kinks of being a new place, but all minor things I'm sure will get figured out in time - BYO Establishment. I think the first/only one in Wheeling, at least as far as I know - Hummus wrap. If the ingredients sound like your cup of tea (quinoa, feta, white bean, veggies) it's great, I think about this sandwich a lot when I forget my lunch at work :) - Chicken and turkey sandwiches - SO GOOD. The one with derby sage cheese is probably my favorite thing on the menu - Lamburger gets raves reviews from everyone who has it (although I haven't gotten to it just yet) - BROWNIES. do it. :) very cakey, not fudgy. Service can sometimes be spotty, but calm down - they're new and they have some really good food options :) They have brunch of Sundays - it's SO nice to have a place to go on a Sunday around here. They mix things up a lot (wings on Thursdays, taco specials, etc.) which is great, and I love that they're trying something new for the area (like tasting menus on the fourth Friday of each month) read more

I have only had the opportunity for breakfast here, but it may just be the best breakfast you can find in Wheeling! And, a good breakfast has been very hard to come by since moving here 5 years ago. I have easily eaten here 10-12 times since it opened and I've yet to have a poor experience. The waiters/waitresses are always friendly and respectful. They care about the service they provide (not always found in this area). The food has been absolutely delightful. I have eaten general scrabbled eggs, breakfast potatoes, and toast; each of which were cooked to perfection. The breakfast sandwich is simply amazing and I highly recommend ordering it on a fresh in-house baked biscuit. The biscuits are just delectable and seem like they are made just for the egg sandwich! On my most recent trip, I had the steel cut oats and potatoes (I can't eat enough of their potatoes!). This was just as delicious as the everything else. The oats were served with fresh cut strawberries and side of brown sugar to sprinkle to your liking. There is also a veggie omelet, which I have only tried from a breakfast partner's plate but it was also delicious. I am a vegetarian and, if you eat eggs, there are plenty of options. Vegans have the option of the steel cut oats which will leave you more than satisfied. Can't say enough good things about this restaurant! From the food to the employees and owners, it is a top notch establishment. I look forward to eating here often. read more

I went in the vagabond on November 4th first off let me say the service is terrible. I seated myself cool, well while I'm waiting for a server I see the chef, my server and some stranger off the street horsing around for a photo. I let it go I never got a refill on my drink and when getting the Korean tacos you need lots of liquid they where dry and in appetizing very bland. The best part of my lunch was the chips and salsa they probably make the chips in house so it was ok for me. Another issue not with me I watched two employees walk by a lady waiting to cash out they ignored her we even made comments to each other. After this expirence I understand why it is so dead all the time there. Oh , and the best part. The bathrooms dirty small, very high school like and they have menus in there not really the best place you want a menu but to eaches own. Pulled off I70 to see what Wheeling has to offer. Found this place on Yelp. BMW touring motorcyle parked just inside the main door--there's a whole story behind it--and The Who on the video screen. Our waitress recommends a local thick-as-oil stout that goes perfectly with the coffee-rubbed flatiron steak and tells us about the history of Wheeling while I finish up some great Irish stew. My wife and I went for lunch. The service was extremely slow and the food items I wanted listed on menu was no longer available. The chili was awful. Polluted with cumin and some other pungent spice made it difficult to eat. Asked that my food not have added salt, it took three tries to get the fries with no salt. I would not recommend this restaurant. The lunch took over 2 hours and the food was horrid. Don't waste your time go elsewhere. read more

I was wanting to try this place out and i should of done a little more research, the service was alright i guess,people were nice but the food...for the prices on the menu i thought maybe gordan ramsey himself prepared it. I've been in with my friends several times. Service is always great and their menu changes every season so there is always new things to try! It's genuinely hard to go wrong with anything on the menu, and their cheesecake is amazing! I think they have a different flavor every week. I don't like giving low stars, especially to independent restaurants. The place looks nice, markets well, and has diversity in their menu. That said, the food wasn't very good. The calamari broke under my fork from being over-fried. The chicken in my soup was mushy. The smoked pulled pork wasn't pulled or smoky but it did taste good. First impressions and all--the kitchen staff was definitely burning something as we walked in. Smoke was billowing throughout the restaurant. But we pressed on. The waitress seemed nice enough, but as she took our order without writing things down (usually a good sign), my order came out completely messed up. After I spent 15 minutes picking the onions off of my food that I had ordered without, I tried to just push on. The burger was lack luster. My husband ordered a cubano and was then informed that they were completely out. So he went with a a back up of the smoked turkey---lucky for him he likes it spicy...because I could not have handled the heat on this dish. The waitress apologized for the mix up blaming the kitchen, and she promised 25% off of my meal (which I did not even make a big about). When the bill came, there was a 10% discount...again no biggie. The food was unique on the menu but just not that great in person. read more

I was home visiting family and we chose this restaurant because it seemed to have good vegetarian options. I got my hopes up when I read that the salads weren't served with iceberg lettuce and the bar had craft beer on tap. Don't judge a book by its cover. After a long wait at the table, I called the restaurant on my phone and asked to send over a server. Someone came over, smelling of cigarette smoke and gave an incoherent apology about coming off break and explained that she had told someone to take care of us. She offered to take our drink order. Apparently we hadn't waited long enough to order food. We eventually got our luke warm iced tea with quickly melting ice. I chose the borracho burger with a black bean patty. The server forgot my father's salad and then delivered it with the wrong salad dressing. "Oh, they didn't give me ranch," she said, staring into a cup of light brown sauce. My burger had good flavor, but it fell apart as soon as I picked it up. I assume they cooked it in the microwave. I ended up using a for and knife to eat it, ignoring the soggy bun. My parents will still eating when I asked the server to take my plate, which she quickly saw as an opportunity to deliver the check. I told her that my parents were still eating. She waited a few minutes and came back to offer the check while my parents were still eating. I get it. You want to turn the table quickly. But we waited forever to get served so maybe let us finish our food before you push the check on us? I won't be back. This area isn't flush with vegetarian options but I will go to a boring Italian place before coming here again. read more

We went for lunch. There were only a few other tables sat around us, so nothing crazy, but the service was so slow! We got a burger and a Cubano. Neither of us really thought the food was all that great, and didn't even come close to finishing our plates. I had food envy of my friend's fries, so he let me have some, and they were even bad. They were so dry and almost lost their insides if that even makes sense. I'm not sure how you mess up fries. Definitely not worth the wait or trying to find a parking spot. read more

This place is attached to the hotel. It is very good. Classy food in a diner type place. The chef is a genius for sure. Pan seared ahi tuna is hard to pull off bug he did an excellent job. Checked in today at this new cool establishment in downtown Wheeling for lunch. Stopped in at around 1130 and there was no crowd but within 30 minutes it slowly started getting packed. Staff was attentive and welcoming. Ordered the charmander and it was the perfect sized meal for a lunch. The wrap was extremely tasty and the meat was tender. Oh and the waffle fries with feta cheese were delicious. This place needs more attention. Delicious food for a great price #forohiovalley read more

First visit. Food was very good (for me). Pricing too high for what you get and what they offer. Service a bit slow, but we were happy to get the server without the hardware stuck in her face. Owner/manager very nice, stopped by our table to see if everything was ok. 6 people in the whole place at dinner time...but then a bunch came in and with all the bare floors and industrial look ( which I love) it became very noisey. Sweet tea means they bring you unsweet and a glass of sugar water to sweeten, kinda weird...plates were a bit small to maneuver around on. Food was good ( husband thought it was just another hamburger but an expensive one). I would go back for that portobella bean burger! but it's not on the menu. The Vagabond is by far the best place in the Ohio valley to eat. The food is top notch! I had the fried calamari in the Thai chili sauce. Lightly breaded, tossed in the sauce, and fried to a golden perfection. It didn't last 5 minutes on the table! Dinner was the blackout burger. Sautéed onions, wilted spinach, and delicious havarti cheese. The bun makes or breaks a burger, the brioche bread was fresh to keep the giant burger together and not get soggy. The flavor profile is perfectly balanced from the richness of the havarti and sautéed onions offset by the balsamic reduction acidity to make for a tongue cartwheeling meal. I'm not much of a French fry eater but the waffle fries combined with the secret weapon of homemade fry sauce is delicious. I had a loaded Bloody Mary with my meal that's made with a WV made mix. It came with bacon, pickle, peperoncino , and olives. The owner Chef Matt came out and checked on our table to make sure everything was to our liking, it was a nice personal touch. If you are traveling through or live in the area The Vagabond Kitchen has to be your go to restaurant for world class food! Can't wait to go back. read more

In Wheeling for work for an extended period. Most places I've tried around here aren't very good at all. This place is unlike the others. Gotta love a chef driven scratch kitchen. I've eaten there the past two nights. Both meals were excellent. I can't remember what the name of the burger was so I won't attempt to spell it but it was the Spicey one and it was really good with the poblano.
