Returned to the Alpha and was very disappointed that the service and ambiance haven't improved. They were having a fund raiser and the restaurant was filled with large parties that were participating. Children were left to run around unsupervised, large groups were clustered around the gift tables and the staff was clearly stressed with all the commotion. We were unfortunately seated next to the gift table and in line with the hall from the kitchen. So all the commotion was right next to our table. In addition, the music was very loud and staticky, making conversation impossible. It was a very uncomfortable experience. Our food took a long time and was cold. We ate as fast as we could to get out of there. I wish that the restaurant had either closed for the fundraiser or set it up in such a way that patrons who were not part of it could enjoy their meal. read more

My family stopped by for lunch and were not disappointed. We were greeted and seated right away. The menu at this place is insane. Literally the largest menu I've ever seen. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. She answered all of our questions and made sure to check in on us throughout our meal. I ordered the open faced turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. The turkey was thick and fresh, not the typical lunch meat turkey that's served in most places. My boyfriend ordered a breakfast burrito with gravy fries. I know what a combination right? His burrito was huge and was stuffed full. I'm glad that they revived the deceased Alpha into the new Alpha Tavern, small local businesses ought to be supported whenever possible. That said, they have some improvements they need to make before it becomes a place I would return to again. The exterior and interior have been completely revamped, and frankly it looks great. They have plenty of seating, both inside and outside on a patio, as well as a bar area. We ate inside in one of the booths and the seating is very comfortable. They start you off with complimentary chips and salsa, and the chips are the delicious corn tortilla kind. Great start! Unfortunately, things started to slide from there. After looking through both sides of the menu, one thing became readily apparent: this place is NOT cheap. $12 for a basic hamburger, and add $1 for each cheese/non-condiment topping you want. This was surprising, especially since the original Alpha's menu was pretty reasonably priced if I recall correctly. None of the other items were any easier on the wallet, and even the sides were $5 a pop. Ouch. When we placed the order and my girlfriend requested the tomato be left off, our server laughed and said she could put that in the order notes but they always leave it on the plate anyway. Kind of a weird way to respond to a reasonable request. After she had put our order in, I realized she hadn't asked how I wanted my burger done, and no surprise when it arrived burnt to a crisp. My girlfriend's turkey burger arrived with the wrong bun, in addition to the tomato (as expected) and lacking a pickle while mine did come with one. Consistency seems to be a problem here. So, verdict on the food: excellent fries, GREAT BBQ sauce (some of the best I have ever had), great brioche buns for the sandwiches, though I have no idea if their Angus meat is any good since it arrived thoroughly incinerated. My girlfriend reported her turkey burger was below average. No idea as to any appetizers, other entrees, or desserts since we did not partake on this occasion, though the plates heading to other tables looked quite attractive. I feel like they are still figuring out the menu, kitchen, and staff training, though this was a pretty lackluster experience for such a pricey place. Hope they improve as time goes on. Overall: 3.0 stars --- Pros: - Attractive exterior and interior, lots of seating. - Free salsa is great. - Plenty of free parking in front. - Staff is pleasant but... Cons: - ...Not terribly accurate with their orders, nor are they that great at honoring customer requests. - These prices are surprisingly high for what you get. - The food items seem to be average at best, though elements of them were below average on this trip. read more

This place is tucked away off the main road in a residential area. There is a small parking area or street parking. They have a nice patio unfortunately it was being used by a private party. They also have a dining room and a bar area. There are nightly specials plus an extensive menu. Part of my group shared the roasted Brussel sprouts, I didn't partake. We also tried the grilled wings in a white sauce and grilled shrimp both very good. The mac n cheese and sweet potato fries were tasty sides. The others at the table both had the special of the night which I believe was half chicken. We all had the "specialty ice cream sandwiches" which we expected to be homemade or at least on a plate, but rather given to us in their wrapper. read more

Decent menu, although I guess it changes a lot. The loaded Bloody Mary I came for was no longer available. So I went with a regular bloody mary which was decent but not worth $7. Went with the Brussels sprouts app and informed the server they were undercooked. He politely apologized and brought back another order exactly the same way... I was then told they simply flash fry them in the fryer. I do my own sprouts at home and every recipe I've ever seen calls for a pan fry to brown the flats, then broil high heat to crisp the out side and cook all the way through at the same time. Obviously the proper method takes too long ? I'd rather wait for my food and have it right than a hack shortcut. HOWEVER, the burger was great, I love the build your burger method they have here. Good food and a nice patio. However, food and drink menu prices are a bit steep. A Buffalo chicken wrap and fries is ~$17. Add a cocktail and you're adding about $10 on top of that. The menu is quite packed with options, which narrowing it down might take my good food remark and turn it into great food. The patio is nice because sitting inside sometimes has a fishy smell. I'm not entirely sure why it smells like that, maybe the kitchen, but the bar doesn't seem to have that smell quite as much as the dining room. It's also weird because the two areas are connected. I was just in Wheeling on a business trip, and we contacted Alpha Tavern to book a large meal for 20 people at the recommendation of a local gal. I am very happy that we did. The food came out quickly and was well prepared, the prices were reasonable, the choice of beverages was extensive, and the service was VERY good. Everyone was very attentive and kind, and the owner/chef came out afterwards to ask us how everything was. The menu is a nice collection of pretty classic American/Italian style food, and those that ordered cocktails said they were good as well. We stopped by for dinner last night, and we were beyond impressed with all the renovations. To have a beautiful patio in the area to enjoy a meal with family and friends is such a welcome addition. From the patio heaters to lighting, exposed wood roofing, everything is tastefully done. We started off with the fries, which come as an assortment of crinkle, steak, shoestring, and sweet potato and four dips. As a sauce boss, and my wife being a condiment queen - we absolutely loved it. The brussel sprouts were great, a little bit on the sweet side but it countered the salty and natural bitterness perfectly. For the main course, I got the smoked wings. They seem as if they're smoked, because the chicken is really tender, but it also has that crisp on the outside so I think they're finished in the fryer. Either way, I loved them (ranchero and dry rub cajun were my flavor choices). My wife got a Greek chicken salad, and she said the flavor was great and the chicken was grilled perfectly. Other people in our party got a wrap, and one got ribs. The wrap was two thumbs up, but the ribs were not so great, very tough. Even at that, he said he would still come back but just not order the ribs. Growing pains perhaps, I have faith that the owners will turn it around once they get some more customer feedback. Showed up for breakfast on a Sunday morning around 11 AM. They ran out of eggs and had to send someone to the local Supermarket. How do you run out of eggs by 11AM on a Sunday when you serve a breakfast menu? Once we got our food, the portions of eggs were large and tasty. The bacon is very good. It has like a pastrami-style crust. We showed up later that night around 10:30 PM because their hours are listed as closing at Midnight. My family and I ate here during our stay at Oglebay. All of theaim BBQ restaurants were closed or sold out so we landed here. All three of us got the ribs and were extremely happy! They were delicious, tender, and the amount of bbq was just right! The fries are super yummy and "crusty". I was not a huge fan of the Cole slaw but tbh, I have a high bar for it. My husband got the potato cheese chowder and it was phenomenal. My son got the spaghetti as a side (lol) and it was great, too! We were in Wheeling for my Mom's funeral. We had heard that the original Alpha at this location had been rebuilt and under new ownership. What a surprise to walk in and see the completely remodeled restaurant with its modern decor and added outdoor dining space complete with space heaters! My sister and I decided to have the Alpha Tavern as the location for our family gathering after burial. Lynn the manager made our meal planning for 30 people a breeze. When we walked in we found our room beyond what we imagined! Low lighting, perfectly arranged tables and a dedicated staff ready to wait on us. The food was delicious! As a bonus they provided an assortment of the most delicious cheese and pepperoni breads! What started as a very sad day ended with a joyous celebration that we all enjoyed! The interior is pretty nice when you first walk in but then you realize it has a southwest motif offering Italian food playing country music with Mexican sombreros hanging on the wall - huh?? My wife ordered grilled chicken, salad, and broccoli, the vegetable of the night, as offered by the waitress. Shortly thereafter, the waitress came back and said they were out of broccoli at 5 PM - dinner time. When my wife's chicken came it was obvious that it had been cooked prior and reheated. It was extremely chewy. She did not say anything, but the waitress inquired as to why she was not eating her entree. My wife explained that it was obviously reheated chicken. The waitress said she would get her a fresh order and left with the entree. Moments later she returned and said the cook told her it would simply be prepared the same way. I suppose that says a lot. The waitress graciously removed her meal from our bill. My rib dinner was fine. I mentioned in previous posts, I did not care for the coleslaw. It is very tangy/vinegar tasting. That is just a preference. The red-skinned potatoes seemed to be instant. There was no evidence of the aforementioned "red skin" and they tasted very boxy. I will absolutely say that our waitress was top-notch and we tipped accordingly. She did her best to serve us and did not neglect her job responsibilities! My girlfriend and I visited this restaurant on New Years Eve for dinner. The restaurant is clean and renovated with modern updates. Chips and salsa were served to every table complimentary, from appearance and taste obviously not fresh, but we were hungry so we ate them. BBQ chicken and stuffed pork chops were the entree's we chose, they were delicious, but the sides were disgusting. A side of vegetables was served in a bowl floating in oil. We both ordered mashed potatoes which were stiff and tasted like instant. The waitress offered to get us something else, but the dining room was closing and we opted not to anger the kitchen staff. Stopped in for dinner one fine evening last week for the first time since it has been renovated. It was beautiful!! It was so welcoming and the food was delicious! The Christmas decorations were very classy and it was overall very beautifully decorated. The food was almost as amazing as the service we received. Our waitress was very attentive and polite, always ensuring we were comfortable and had everything we needed.
