Very nice servers - the food just basic - tasted extra normal - I wouldn't recommend- im sure you can find better

This place is fantastic! You might feel like you stepped back in time when you walk through the door. There isn't to many places like this left. It has an old school diner vibe and the prices are incredible. We had a party of 4 and our bill was only $35. Our waitress was superb! She was an older lady and I was just amazed at how well she did her job. She was moving around that place and carrying out trays of food like it was nobody's business. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with hash browns. I'm pretty sure this was the best biscuits and gravy I've had, and trust me I've tried many. The hash browns were really good too. You can tell that they're freshly made. I don't have one complaint about this place and will definitely be back. I would love to give their lunch menu a try next!

First of all, if you've eaten at this diner two or more years ago, ignore all reviews posted before then. They were true -- bad service, dirty worn out dirty diner, and awful food. We last ate here in 2020 based on someone else's recommendation. Awful. Just awful. We had not planned on coming back, ever. Then we saw a new tv ad for Sonny Boy's with a new menu. Looked a LOT better than it had. Plus they offered 50% off for a $25 certificate. Why not? Things have changed, mostly. The diner still has that "the 70's called and they want their diner back" motif, but at least it's a lot cleaner than it was two years ago and doesn't stink of cigarette smoke. My wife had the stuffed chicken breast with corn and double-baked potato. The chicken was great but the corn was a little cold. I had the Reuben Melt (picture posted) and onion rings. Two years ago, the melt was cold, had tasteless corned beef, no swiss, wimpy sauerkraut, and no dressing. This time everything was perfect. Warm sandwich, great corned beef, plentiful sauerkraut and dressing. And the onion rings...fantastic. They weren't whole rings but minced onion but still, wonderfully done. The only negative was the service. It was slow. I think the waitress was trying her best, but some people can wait tables...some can't. If I were giving stars based on the local area (which is a foodie's worst nightmare), it would have been five. But most of these reviews are for folks out of town, visiting, or passing through. It's still a solid four. Had the restaurant had a complete remodel and the service been better, I'd feel more like a five. But it it what it is. I was told the guy who owns the used car lot next door bought it about 1-2 years ago. For someone who sells used cars, Sonny Boy's is a modern miracle. He deserves a pat on the back and a hearty atta-boy!!

    The menu.

I was really hoping this place would be a nice home cookin' oasis on our cross-country drive, but was so disappointed! The food deserves zero stars...it was really, really bad. I don't mind weird exotic foods, but my lunch was barely edible. I had a grilled cheese, thinking "how bad could a grilled cheese be?", and it was 2 squares of gluey orange Kraft (if you're lucky) between 2 chewy, greasy pieces of white toast. Please. In case you read that description thinking "doesn't sound *that* bad" - trust me, it was. My boyfriend tried to ask the waitress if the fish in the fish sandwich was local and if it was frozen - two questions she'd apparently never heard and had an awfully hard time comprehending. We laughed, and he ordered a B.L.T which might as well have been made by a blindfolded 4 year old. However, I'd still rather go to Sonny Boy's than McDonalds, any day. The prices are so cheap it's a wonder the servers make anything, and I'm happy to support a local business. I just hope they hire some decent kitchen staff. Great people watching, a pretty interesting experience overall!

And that's where it pretty much ended for me. We were greeted by 2 individuals prior to being sat. Once we were sat I was told I couldn't have any outside drinks. I was carrying a hot tea in a paper cup when we walked in. No one else mentioned this. I later read a posting in the bathroom about outside drinks being prohibited. Seemed like it was mostly to prevent outside alcohol but was a blanket statement for all drinks. I thought it was odd I had to take my hot tea back to my car. Besides that the waitress wasn't super warm and friendly either. If I remember correctly she started with, "what are you drinking?" After I had to walk my tea to our parked vehicle. The food was mid. Very very mid. I got a salmon savory crepe. The salmon was dry, almost white in color and just seemed old. The crepe itself was chewy and hard to cut. My husband's wrap was decent. Kids plates were also decent. I liked that you "created" their plate from 3 categories or options. Overpriced for quality and portion. Once our food arrived there was a swarm of gnats that came with it. Our table was wobbly so cutting any food shook the entire surface. Our toddler caught on to this and wanted to rock the table the whole time. So between holding the table, trying to cut food and swatting gnats away.. it just wasn't a good experience all together. I'm confident there are better options in town for us to try when we return.

It was big enough to share with three people! This is the type of restaurant that has silly names for everything on their menu. For example, Crepes of Wrath is a savory crepe with sausage, and Banana-fo-Fana has bananas and granola in it. Usually, I refuse to say these silly names out loud when I order, and instead will just order according to the ingredients. ("Give me the Nutella and berries crepe.") I know. I'm that person! You don't want to take me to a silly-names restaurant, because I will ruin your silly-names experience. In this case, though, the silly names are so pervasive throughout the menu that I was overwhelmed and I just gave up. Sometimes, you just have to grit your teeth and play along. Yes, I did say, "Give me the Last Tango." Before the crepe, though, we got lunch. Later Alligator has a huge sandwich menu. At least two dozen different sandwiches! Then there's wraps, salads, appetizers and a kids' menu. I got the Fowl Play (sigh), which is chicken salad with lettuce and tomato on a croissant. My oldest kid got the Club Car, which included ham, turkey, Swiss cheese and lettuce. In case you were wondering: The silly names extend to the kids menu, too! (Which Wich Tuna Fish is just one example.) My younger kid got the Munchkin (mac and cheese). The kids' mac and cheese here is a mini cup, so just keep that in mind if your child eats a lot. Both of my children eat like birds, so the size of the mac and cheese wasn't a problem for us. This is also the type of restaurant that has interesting things everywhere you look (including the restroom!), so take some time to look around at all of the paraphernalia everywhere.

The food is really good at this little restaurant. Elle & Jack's leans toward Italian cuisine, but it gets a little funky with it by offering things like chimichurri salmon, a burger and steak frites. The menu is small, though, which is a relief. A pared down menu is my favorite kind of menu. Give me a small list of the things you make well, and I'll be happy. We got the arancini as an appetizer, of course. My kids had never had arancini before, and they loved them. But it's hard not to love a fried ball of rice covered in red sauce! I got the steak Caesar, because I do love a good Caesar salad. At this point in my life, I'm pretty much obligated to order the Caesar if it's on a menu. The girl can't help it. The steak was cooked perfectly (medium well), and the only thing I would change would be to make the croutons smaller. We also got a side of charred Brussel sprouts with bacon and dates. These were good but needed to be a little more charred! In my opinion, Brussels sprouts taste best when they're scorched. A side order is huge and meant to be shared. It could have easily been shared with three or four people. Elle & Jack's does not have an official kids' menu printed on a paper, but they have an unofficial kids' menu, which apparently lives in each server's head and can only be shared verbally. It's like five or six items. From what I remember -- because our server's words floated away from me like dandelion seeds in the wind as soon as he spoke them -- kids can choose from pasta with red sauce, buttered noodles, a grilled cheese and a cheeseburger. One of my kids got pasta with red sauce, and it was a perfect portion size for a child. My child liked it but said that the noodles were too chewy (they were probably cooked al dente). My other kid got a grilled cheese, and he liked it just fine. The kids' grilled cheese comes with fries. The scene here is slightly upscale but casual. I saw people who were dressed up and people who were not dressed up. I think it's definitely a come-as-you-are joint, but a place to visit when you want something a little more elevated.

So I approached the juke box, and the bar tender Whoever said, that this is a family-owned restaurant, and they don't play the juke box during the day, because it is a family restaurant, but they have the Game Room, playing crude country music that doesn't respect the family, and they say my music is going make trouble. Plus they can have restricted stuff from not playing, instead, I felt singled out as a guest there. Yes, you can have your double standard rules, because this is America, and the freedom to do whatever you feel like, but that does not mean I have to go there to be singled. I don't have to go back there. The first time was great in January, but on my wife and I anniversary of 26 years, I think I can find a place where I feel more welcomed. It is always the case of passing a great place down through the family, in order for it feel unwelcomed of the glory days. Yes, I know this place has been around since the 1990's, but it is a very unwelcoming place. You can act nice, while showing you didn't want us there. They said it was because Karaoke was at 7PM, while a minute song at 4:45PM. While they didn't even know what songs I was going to place. Again, I thought it would be an old-fashioned feel. Thus instead, I felt the Cold Ridged Religious Feel that was a double standard of Gambling Rooms and so forth. Yes, I went to seminary and everything else, but I am going to let everyone choose their own path. They have their ridged rules, but that does not mean I have to eat there, especially for anniversaries. It is not an anniversary or a place for specially occasions. Again, it doesn't bother me one bit, because I move on, but I am raised with certain values to tell what I believe. My wife felt the onion soup was too breaded and cheesy. They had a great Salad and Gluten Free Pizza. And the bathrooms are clean when I went in there, but I don't feel welcomed there. Like you're a stranger that should never return. I just wonder.
