Stopped on Sunday morning for brunch. Ordered the omelet selection along with 2 waters and 1 coffee. Coffee came with soap bubbles in it and cup not clean. Omelets were dry and to be honest the worst I have had in any restaurant. We are not hard to please, but the experience here was not in any way pleasant. We were each given a very small goblet of water both of which were emptied early on and never offered a refill. We had been on our way to another local restaurant but decided to try this spot because I had heard good things. Our experience did not support this at all. I sincerely hope this was not typical, and will not recommend to anyone. What we had hoped would be a good experience was anything but good. Tried this place for the first time on Sunday for brunch. Whenever we walked in they asked us if we had a reservation which was a little off putting. Anyways they ended up seating us (without reservations) right away. The restaurant itself is pretty cool with lots to look at while you're waiting. The bar area took up a good amount of the space in the restaurant and seemed to have a pretty big focus on craft beer. Our waitress was friendly and took good care of us while we were there. She was actually one of the best parts of our experience there. The brunch menu was pretty limited so I went with the biscuits and sausage gravy. The biscuits were really good, but the gravy tasted like it had a little too much flour in it. For my side I ordered the hash browns and they were really good. I had been wanting to eat here since I saw Chef Matt on GGG. We went for brunch and made a reservation for right when it opened, although it turned out we didn't need to. Service was excellent - our waitress was one of the best I've had anywhere. I wish I could remember her name! The place is small but has a cool casual vibe. My husband got a burger and really liked it. I got the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich with biscuits. I did not care for the biscuit - it was too crumbly for a sandwich. We had a pleasant meal here. The restaurant was almost empty and we were warmly greeted by the energetic server. We were surprised at the small menu. Unfortunately, it was even smaller since they were out of many of the items on the menu. So, the pickings were slim. Hubbie had a West Virginia beer to start and I had a pomegranate grapefruit martini that was decent. For dinner, we had the Irish stew and the black bean burger with apple chutney. The Vagabond Kitchen never disappoints! Stopped in for dinner yesterday. Food is always delicious and the service is good and friendly. Cloud took good care of us yesterday! I had the mountaineer meatloaf. It was so good! My wife had a chicken dish she raved about. Had some tasty fried green beans for an appetizer. Very good also. I highly recommend! My boyfriend and I have come here twice now for brunch on a Sunday. I love the atmosphere here! It kinda feels like a family friendly place with a Guy Fieri moto-gang touch. It's never very full but the wait can sometimes be longer than expected. My boyfriend is a bit of a carnivore so he was really excited for the Texan Book of the Dead Chili and so we got it and shared it each visit. It's chock full of steak chunks and spice. I love that it looks like dog food! I'm serious! Yum! Gold star! Can't wait to get it again. It pairs nicely with their tortilla chips. I ordered the Steak and Eggs. The steak was their coffee rubbed flank steak with home potatoes and I asked for the two eggs to be dippy (gooey in the yolk). I also got the option to smother the fries in sausage gravy-- which I highly recommend! My boyfriend got the roasted pepper steak wrap and I found it to be good but not great. The Bloody Mary I ordered had bacon salt, which was cool. I feel like the presentation could have been better. The bacon on it was cold. The celery looked old. The drink itself was okay. Had a good amount of vodka in it. The bacon salt was tasty. The servers are always super sweet. The window seats make for good weather watching. The menu has a lot of good choices. Stopped in for dinner while passing through Wheeling a few weeks ago. All three of us must have been in a burger sort of mood as we all ordered different choices from a fairly long burger section of the menu. All were cooked to order (medium) and were both generously sized and juicy. The various cheeses/toppings for the burgers were all very tasty. Nice selection of local beers on tap. We had a party of 10 last evening. We made reservations and were promptly seated. The tables were ready for us and the hostess introduced herself and the server. During a recent visit to Wheeling, we made reservations to eat here on a Friday night. After arriving at the restaurant I was a little surprised at how the inside of the place seemed disjointed. It seemed they started to renovate and add updated trendy details and then left some of the old details from the previous restaurant that the server told us was a Mexican restaurant. Seated at a booth that was reminiscent of an old school Mexican restaurant so I am sure that was left untouched. Another somewhat odd thing about our atmosphere was the live entertainment playing that evening. It was a Celtic band. They set up right next to our table. Just lined chairs against the wall and performed. It was interesting, but again not sure how it fit into Vagabond's POV. What is Vagabond's POV? Here is what I gathered. I noticed some "Swagabond" for sale near the door. I also noticed the head chef's story online about traveling the country to find amazing recipes then returning to WV to open his restaurant, which features locally sourced ingredients. It has become more common in the restaurant business to embrace locally sourced ingredients, and I enjoy supporting places that keep it local and fresh. When we went to check in, via the Yelp app, we were pleased to discover a 10% off your entrée with a "check in." We promptly showed this to our server who took my husband's phone to view the offer intensely. I asked her after a few seconds if she needed to go check that with someone and she snapped back quickly that she was the manager and did not need to ask anyone. Ok. Not all that often do managers wait tables and are unfamiliar with the restaurants offers but hey, I am sitting in an out-of-place booth near a large open window in this newer trendy establishment, what do I know? She takes our drink orders and food orders to follow. Time passes. We amuse ourselves and enjoy the band though again it was something totally out of left field for me. Have you ever heard a Celtic band while dining before when you were not in some Irish Pub? Yes me neither. Our food arrives. I went with the steak. I believe it was a skirt steak with a coffee rub. It came with a sweet potato hash and was supposed to have, I believe, a steamed kale side, but they were out of that. They substituted green beans instead. I may be wrong on the exact cut of steak as they have since taken their menu offline and I cannot confirm the cut. I believe that the cost of my entrée was under $20.00, and it was unbelievably delicious! The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and the hash had excellent flavor. The beans disappointed me. They were just average, but the sauce around the steak made them more interesting. Oh I wish they had not run out of the kale dish. I am sure it would have been much better than the beans; however, it was a fantastic meal at a reasonable price. Based off food alone I would come back again while visiting Wheeling. read more

Rust belt food- elevated According to our waiter, the creators of this restaurant wanted to design a menu to highlight the wonders of WV cuisine, which to most people, including myself, doesn't seem that appealing. Even the name itself seems unappetizing. I had driven past this restaurant dozens of times, and never once that about actually eating there, and the color scheme/décor of the restaurant itself doesn't strike one as "attractive". But after the coaxing of some friends I ate there. And everything changed. I felt like I was a coal miner, who had never befire eaten a chicken sandwich. A steel mill worker, who had never before eaten macaroni and cheese. Just eating their food, made me more hungry because it was soooo good. Horrible service. Mediocre food . The waitress did not come for long periods, she never brought my salad dressing. She tried to take my husbands drink that was clearly not finished. We told her upfront we needed separate checks and then again when we asked for the check and she still only brought one check. I can't really describe how scattered brained she seemed. Not overwhelm. When I asked for it to be cooked more they said all of their meat is Med and he said the menu states seared so I should have known that. At that point I just said thanks and we're done. He said for a few bites ? I had eaten around the outside where it was cooked because I couldn't eat my salad, no dressing and I had 3 stalks of asparagus. He acted like I wanted something that I had not paid for. The only wine by the glass is 1 Chardonnay or 1 red. I paid $35 to eat 3 oz of salmon, a side salad and 3 stalks of asparagus & two glasses of Chardonnay. The meal was piece by piece delivered to me through the 75 mins I was there. Something is off. I wanted to like it. I said it looks like someone's passion project but the service is not up to par. I don't know how what we experienced could be so off and get some of the good reviews I see here. Overall the food was good, not great. The meatloaf was tasty but a little dry. The Mac and cheese was good but needed a little more creaminess. The miners appetizer as very good. What can I say, other than BLEECH!!! I waited a few weeks to comment on this travesty... The service and food was beyond a total disaster. My son really wanted to try this place out. I commented that I'd been there once before, and I found the food below sub-par and the service followed suit. I couldn''t recommend it, but I let him find out for himself...I shouldn't have, as what we were served was at the lower level of absolute swill. I had ordered steak and eggs...seems reasonable, though quite expensive at $22.00. Simple enough. This place ain't no fancy joint. My order was presented to me...what I viewed were a couple of eggs with lace curtains, kinda' what my grand mother, "High Fire Irene" would serve us as kids. I've the give then inept cook credit. He was able to FU simple eggs over easy, what a talent. I should have said something then and there, but I let it slide. The steak, had the sublime tenderness as a Dollar Store shoe-liner. This meat didn't qualify for "Choice'...maybe last choice government meat, from the Outer Mongolia. For $22.00 you'd expect something as simple as toast to come with the order, however this wasn't the case. I asked the waitress for some rye toast...they didn't have that...they had white only. She came back 10 minutes later with one slice that might have come from the first third of the loaf, and the other slice that looked as if it came from the heel. On top of that, it was moldy. I called the waitress over and pointed it out. She immediately took it to the cook, who proclaimed that it wasn't mold. I guess green and dark-brownish spots o. Bread doesn't qualify for mold. The "chef" dismissed it. Whoever that line-cook is should be immediately fired. Send him back to mowing lawns or cleaning public toilets. I almost feel bad about lambasting an establishment, as I realize that restaurants have their mess-ups, but this was beyond an atrocity. Folks, get your s#*t together, or shutter your doors. LOVED this place! Solid 5 stars. It wasn't busy when we hit it, so the wait for food was't bad at all. I've heard it can be a little slower when they're busy though, so plan accordingly! The truffle fries and ranch alone were enough to make me happy (we added bacon because... well ) We also had the duck wings in Szechuan sauce- so good! Duck wings are also available with Honey Sriracha, Thai chili, or BBQ... AND! They have a vegetarian alternative option! Yes! My friend had the coffee-rubbed flat iron steak everyone's been raving over and I can see what all the hype is about! SO delicious. I had the BBBQBB (that's... I just started working downtown Wheeling. I've been wanting to try the Vagabond Kitchen at its new location. Love the space! The menu is new, diverse and affordable. I had the soup of the day, Chicken Vegetable. It was hearty and flavorful. The bowl was $6, maybe more than i would like to pay for soup, but all the ingredients were fresh and you ca tell this wasn't some frozen bag from a food distributor. I plan on grabbing a take out menu and making this a regular spot. *if it was acceptable to pick up the bowl and slurp those last few sips... I totally would have (glad for the take-out option). I had never been here before and I was interested in trying a new place. Disappointed in the experience. I work at a restaurant and there were just a lot of things that were wrong. Our server was very sweet but you could tell she was trying too hard to sweet talk us. I never think that appearance is an issue when it comes to any industry, you are allowed to be who you are and no place should stop you. But this is an instance where they need to tone it down. Our waitress had long acrylic nails and she was continuously tapping her nails on our plates, the table, anything and everything. I'm sure she washes her hands but acrylic nails pick up a lot of bacteria. With the prices they were charging and the atmosphere they were trying to make there should be a restriction on things such as facial piercings. She had a lot of them, which is fine, but for a business like this, appearance is important. When my friends called to make the reservation for 9 people at 6:30, the person who answered was very hesitant to take the reservation. She didn't know if they would be able to accommodate us. When we got there, there were two people at the bar and that was it. I get that they may have wanted to close early or whatever, but if they would have said "we're trying to close early and we are unable to take the reservation" we would have said thank you and found a different place. They were out of a lot of things, a glass of draft beer was $8, the food was eh, and the overall atmosphere was not appealing. They charged my mom $2 for an 'extra plate' when she said she would be sharing a burger with my younger sister.
