Good food, great service, and a nice menu. Haven't had a bad meal there and the desserts are amazing.

We had gone here last year and loved it... not the case this time! When our party of 5 arrived, there were 2 or 3 others in the restaurant. The waitress started off by telling us all of the menu items that were not available - no chicken, no coquille, no onion soup, etc. 3 of us ordered steaks. Mine came with smashed potatoes and green beans and they were stone cold. The steak (filet) was nearly raw and was actually cold to touch. So was my daughter's. The waitress took our plates back and the whole plate was heated in a microwave. It was all tasteless and awful!!! My daughter's boyfriend had a New York strip steak that was ok and my daughter had crab cakes that were mediocre, but for a $500 meal, it was disgusting. - Two women came to the restaurant and the hostess was heard telling them that it would be a 40 minute wait because they were short of staff. There were actually more staff than there were customers. Before we left, we were the only ones there. It just seemed like they were anxious to close the restaurant. I have been here many times and always got great service and a good meal. Unfortunately, not the other evening. I ordered a filet medium which was well done and dry. This is now a 73 dollar steak. I sent it back. The food took 30 mins to get to our table and the waitress' asked if I wanted another steak but I declined because she wasn't very happy about it. The meal was not great at all. Didn't know anything about this place and just went there based on Yelp and the fact that we were at Cabela's.Thrilled that we did! They not only have bar type food, they have great pizza and appetizers as well. They also have "real" food-good quality dinners like in a fine dining restaurant. It's not often that one restaurant is good at both. These guys are! Our server was outstanding! In keeping with the flexible and varied menu, I was in a hoodie and ball cap but felt completely comfortable even though the decor was leaning a little upscale. This place was simply fantastic from start to finish. The ambiance is nice, laid back but somewhat upscale at the same time. We were greeted and seated right away. Our waitress was friendly and attentive throughout our time there. We started out with drinks and an appetizer the southwest spring rolls. Kudos to the bartender who made all of our drinks correctly and mixed very well. The appetizer was good and everyone enjoyed it. We're all picky eaters and it was something that we all liked. I had the french onion soup and it was by far the best that I've ever had. Very tasty! For my entree I went with the chicken alfredo and it was delicious. I've had dinner at the Char House around 30 times. I understand Char House considers itself upscale - and it is for the area, but it is not a Morten's or similar ridiculously priced place. It is a solid steak and fish restaurant with a nice ambience and very good food. It has an excellent bar and a lot of craft beer, wine, and great bartenders. Sit at the bar. I ordered a pasta that came out super salty tasting to the point that it wasn't edible. I've never turned a dish away until this one but still got charged for it and they explained to me that's how it's supposed to taste so if I come back don't order that. Wow! First time here and it was great! Celebrated my SO's bday and it was romantic and delicious! Our waitress was super sweet and did an excellent job. We started with pulled pork on onion rings with Cole slaw underneath as an appetizer and it was really good! The pork had a nice smokey taste to it, the rings weren't soggy or greasy and the slaw wasn't over powered by mayo or anything. It worked well together. I got the half smoked chicken with potatoes and shaved Brussel sprouts. I love that they season everything very well, Yum! The crust on the chicken was Devine! And for the first time ever (I've always wanted to try this!) I got risotto. It was mushroom to be exact. Really good too! My SO got a cheeseburger and said it was amazing! And he's a bit of a burger snob. The prices were a bit high but it was a Celebration so we splurged a bit. The unsweetened tea was also good. I didn't even need any sweetener. Came here for a nice meal with my mom. The staff was friendly and quick and made sure we were taken care of. The ambiance is decent but the lighting is really dim and honestly detracts from the experience. We got the charcuterie board to share. The board was good but the salami and pepperoni was too thin for my taste and was arranged on a way that made it hard to eat. I got the lobster ravioli for my meal. It was fine but the lobster didn't really come through well in the dish and the sauce didn't really complement the lobster all that well. On a cold busy Saturday night I'm glad we made a reservation. This was our first visit and won't be our last. It's a cozy and warm spot with a bar in front corner and some gift items for sale in the entry way. Once seated our server was amazing she gave us all the favorite menu items and plenty of time to make our decisions since we were overwhelmed to decide. We chose the gouda pizza as an appetizer since we saw every table had a pizza on it. The charcuterie board, shrimp and bruschetta all looked good. I ordered the special pork medallions topped with crab and cream sauce, my husband ordered the pork Chop. We were told we had to order the brown butter cake, they weren't wrong. Wow! This place was a very pleasant surprise. Glad I made reservations, we came for dinner on a Saturday night. The ambiance in there is great - nice lighting, good layout, fun booths. The Wheeling, WV food scene is amazing, but I would beg you to please never set foot in this establishment. I don't judge a place by one experience, but after two visits I can confirm this is by far the worst restaurant in Wheeling. We're not talking about a single failure either - From the service to the food and pricing this restaurant is an expert at being terrible. On this visit, we waited 15-20 minutes for basic non-alcoholic drinks and two beers from the bar. A soup and an appetizer were both not put in by the server with very little apology given. An entire entree was missed and showed up at the table 15 minutes later. Three rubbery shrimp added to a salad cost $6. And last but not least, an extra rare ordered steak came to the table looking like shoe leather. After all of that the most insulting aspect of this restaurant is the premium price that they attempt to charge for a restaurant that ranks lower than Applebees in my mind. While I appreciate most of the local favorites for their history and nostalgia, sometimes you're willing to pay a little more for a well thought menu, quality ingredients and culinary execution. I had the Steak Salad (perfectly medium) and a really delicious crab cake appetizer. My daughter ordered the butternut squash ravioli and tomato bisque--also both excellent. Beer and cocktail menu is also well constructed with some great selections. Neighboring table had a wood fired pizza that looked so good that we ordered one to go--delicious! Wife and I went there for our anniversary. We arrived 15 minutes prior to our reservation time, but we were seated right away. Maitre'd did not provide the wine list. Despite the early seating, no one showed up to take drink order until our actual reservation time. If we were too early, I would have gladly sat at the bar and had a cocktail. The dining room is acoustically live. We order a bottle of wine once we had the list; cost of a bottle was twice that of a glass, so we bought the bottle which was priced fair. The crab cake appetizer was very good, lot of meat although not any lump meat, but that's ok. My wife ordered a special which was a flat iron steak with 'shrimp scampi'. It was steak with 4 shrimp on it. Steak was ordered medium, came out almost well done. She was ok with it, at least it wasn't tough. Lackluster. I had a special as well, sea bass which was very good. Service was good. The lemon cake dessert was good also, I was disappointed that a place this expensive didn't have expresso. Overall, I would give it a 3.5 but can't do that here. Went for a bday party. Reservations made over a week in advance. Tables weren't ready, decorations not up, as promised. We had to wait 20 minutes before everything was set. Food was very slow to come. We were there at 5 before it got busy. Food way over-priced (this is Wheeling, not LA or New York), small portions (especially the appetizers) average food, small selection. I got pasta and asked for linguini. Got some big, thick round noodles that looked like they were out of a can and it was not even hot. Chicken was tough and dry. Was told we could get lunch at any time then were told that was wrong once we got there. Didn't even offer free cake for the bday girl. Had plans to do another party there but we're going elsewhere. Had we not been there for the party, I would have said something. It gets worse. We called and asked for the manager. The owner, Jim, answered and was the RUDEST JERK ever. He would not even let me speak and was completely nasty and ignorant. I had him on speaker phone and everyone was shocked at how he was speaking to me. He kept interrupting, was very disrespectful, and we never had a chance to share our lousy experience with him. Little does he know who was in that party. This place will eventually go down. It's a small town and word gets around. Especially when you are another business owner and well known. Jim, you are a horrible person. It will catch up with you. Just read Susie Duncan's review below and you'll realize what a complete a@#$% he is. Some people just shouldn't be in business. They know nothing about service or respect.
