Vagabond Kitchen is a one-if-a-kind restaurant in Downtown Wheeling! Came here for Sunday brunch after church. It was Christmas time so there were very pretty decorations around the restaurant. Our booth we had offered a beautiful view of Downtown Wheeling! The overall look was modern, but giving a casual feel! I ordered the 3 egg omelette with spinach, bell pepper, ham, and American cheese and breakfast potatoes. And oh.. my... goodness!! It was the biggest piece of food on my plate I've ever had! It was probably bigger than my cat!! The omelette was absolutely delicious! The breakfast potatoes were ok, very salty (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). Thank you for an amazing day! After stating we wanted to go, we were ignored until we went and flagged someone down after waiting for about 10 minutes. They unfortunately seemed uninterested in waiting on us. I'm sad to say that I probably wouldn't go back to Vagabond Kitchen. The food was good but the service is terrible! They had about 6 dirty table tops, the owner was walking around chatting it up with people. They only cleaned the old food off when a new customer needed to sit. We probably waited 10 minutes for a table, another 5-10 for a menu... it went on from there. The restaurant was smoky as if the kitchen has poor ventilation. Forty-five minutes later, our food arrived and mine was wrong. I just asked for no tomatoes and plain truffle fries and I received fries with bleu cheese and a sandwich with tomato and and burnt Swiss cheese. It was ok but odd. She also ran out to pay the meter before bringing out our food. Note to the chef- a little truffle oil goes a long way as does garlic. Bottom line- this is Wheeling, this might work here. I'm from Chicago... this would not survive. read more

All I can say is wow what a bummer. I ordered a Vagabond version Moscow Mule and it was really really bad. It said on the menu it was made with ginger beer but instead the bartender made it with tonic water and a splash of ginger syrup. Gross. I tried it anyway. Nope. When I told the bartender it was undrinkable she said that's just how they are made- with tonic water. Well that's not what the menu says so maybe update that $15 drink description. I asked to exchange for some other drink. The second drink tasted better until I saw a bug in it. Nope. The bartender graciously said she wouldn't charge me for it. LOL. Then I ordered a whiskey neat because I just wanted a cocktail before we had to roll to a dry event across the street. For that I was charged $10. So for 3 drinks for me and my 2 friends my bill was $46 with tax and tip. I'm so disappointed. I just moved into the neighborhood and had high hopes for this place but based on this experience I won't be back for dinner. read more

This is probably the best most affordable restaurant in Wheeling. This is high class food in a non intimidating setting for Applebees prices. You can easily see the chef is unique and daring (and friendly). This is no standard american fare, they have thought out every dish and don't phone anything in. The positives: the pork porterhouse was amazing, great cheesy mash potatoes and carmalized onions and the porkchop itself was delicious. This restaurant is kid friendly with high chairs and kids menu. The burgers are on point. The service is amazing, drinks filled, food came quickly (kids food with the appetizers) and the chef personally came to ask how he did. My side salad was the best side salad I have ever had, I am very glad I didn't choose the fries. The negatives: Nachos Libre (appetizer) is spicy! I love spicy food and loved this dish but most of the table could not eat it. I eat extremely spicy food and this was perfect for me but people who like spicy food might find it too much. The waffle fries are okay...but not as good as normal fast food fries. My cuban sandwich(I love cubans!) was below mediocre. The major problem was that it had a ton of horseradish, which I hate, and the menu said it had a honey mustard sauce...it was near inedible. I traveled to Wheeling for a quick trip to see a friend for lunch. When I checked yelp, Vagabond Kitchen was rated highly and it was in the Mcclure hotel, which I where my friend was staying. So, it seemed like a perfect option. Plus, I read that the ingredients were more local, which I prefer I had the vegan chili and the white bean burger (also meatless). The burger came with about 4-5 (largish) fries and a pickle. I enjoyed the chili; it had a slight kick, was thick, and the (half) corn bread piece served with the chili had slivers of jalapeños, which was nice. The burger was quite bland. I asked for BBQ sauce (one of the only condiments I usually eat) and they didn't have any. I ended up adding ketchup, which I don't care for in the first place, but the meal needed something else. The French fries were okay. Again, they were a little bland and difficult ultimatly to eat. My friend had the turkey and bacon sandwich, without mayo, and he said it was decent. Although I don't plan on returning to Wheeling, even if I did, I would not go back to vagabond kitchen. The service was subpar, even when we were the only ones in the restaurant. The entire staff left! One of the cooks came out and saw us. He asked if we were okay or needed anything, which I thought was nice -- but it wasn't his job. In the middle of our meal we had a different server. Not a problem. The new server kept forgetting about us and we were the only customers! It took a good 10 minutes to get our checks and even more time for her to return to cash us out and bring our change back. I have been meaning to try this place for a long time after following the vagabondchef on Instagram and seeing his creations. This place is located in the ground floor of the McClure House in what used to be "Club 304" (thank God that place is extinct). I stopped here once on a Friday night around 8:00 and it was dead so I was scared off and didn't enter. Fast forward a month or so and I went with a group of 4 on a Saturday evening around 7:00 PM. It still was dead inside with only 8 or so people but I was dead set on trying this place out. We were seated right away (as expected) and given menus and offered drinks. The menu is pretty extensive. This restaurant is free from typical chain restaurant offerings (you know, throw some frozen stuff in a deep fryer with a few ounces of salt). Everything is created by the Vagabond Chef himself and everything had clear descriptions on the menu. Also, everything is sourced locally from the area. Check their menu out on their website. It is an impressive menu for the Wheeling area. I started off with a Hummus platter for the table. Kalamata olives, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, red peppers, pepperoncinis, feta cheese, crostini bread and homemade hummus. This hummus was excellent. Topped any hummus I have ever had. Only thing I would add to this platter is olive oil for bread dipping. I had my eyes set on the Beefalo lamb burger but unfortunately, it was unavailable which is to be expected when things are sourced locally and not always available. I opted for the Apple Bacon Chicken Tenderloin. See pictures below. Only thing I wish here is that the apples had more tang to them. It came with house made tortilla chips. A lot of people think the Ye Olde Alpha has the best chips in the area and after trying these, I disagree. These have their own special seasoning and are hot and crispy. They are served with some sort of beef chili for dipping. It was good, but I would prefer salsa myself. Also, the serving of the beef chili could be larger. I exhausted it with a few chips. My brother went with the Ruby Tuna sandwich. He thought it was excellent. his wife went with the Korean Pork Tacos. She commented they were excellent, especially the tortillas. This is a great place for downtown Wheeling. I will be back. This type of menu is not something that the area is used to but if you try it, you will be back. The service was excellent. Drinks were refilled. Fresh sliced lemons were brought to us on a plate for anyone at the table. Plenty of napkins also refilled. Food presentation is great which is unheard of in this area. I'm not sure if there is a bar there, but it would be a nice addition. Great job to the Vagabond Chef and his staff. I need to make it there for Sunday brunch. I ordered the Texas Book of the Dead chili ($9) and the Mediterranean salad ($10). I was told over the phone that it would be ready in 20 minutes. Twenty minutes after ordering I arrived and they said that it would be ready soon. The restaurant has a modern feel. It was not very busy. As I looked around the food looked good. One of the cooks in the back was slicing onions and separating them into a large container with ungloved hands. At one point he was taking to one of the waitresses and was holding a onion slice with one hand and flicking it repeatedly with a finger on his other hand. Ten minutes later my order was ready. When. I got back to my hotel room I opened my food. My first impression was underwhelming. The salad was pretty small for the cost. It had been made on a plastic plate and covered with suran wrap. I opened the chili and was surprised that they had only given me 1/2 of the small container they had packed it in. The salad, although it tasted OK, was drenched in dressing. It was absolutely dripping. Mixing the dollop of hummus with it made it more like a pasty, drippy casserole than a salad. The Book of the Dead chilli was OK. It tasted strongly of chili powder and had some heat to it. It was very greasy. The meat was neither tender nor tough. The $20 meal left me unsatisfied and still hungry. I feel like I received a $9 meal instead of a $20 meal. read more

I really want to like this place and what they are doing with the food, but...the service is irredeemably bad. We made reservations for 5pm and figured it was enough time since there was a band we wanted to see at the Celtic Festival at 7pm-two blocks down from Vagabond. We were seated right away and sat for a good ten minutes with no menus or contact with wait staff until I politely stopped a server walking passed and asked for menus. I guess that made her our server also because she began taking our drink order and because we were now concerned how long things would take we gave her our food order. It's hard to order when they are out of several menu items, but oh well. Then we waited...and waited...tables were filling up, there was a table across from us that waited for a very long time like we did without menus or service and eventually walked out. We waited some more. The server never stopped back for a long while. My sister got her attention as she was walking by and asked for a Guinness which took 20 minutes to show up. We waited some more, no tables around us had food. It took an hour and fifteen minutes total for our food to arrive. My mom was disappointed her ravioli was cold, but it wasn't worth the time to get it fixed. The coffee rubbed steak was small for the price-my sister and husband both ordered it at different temps and were each given the wrong one without knowing until they started cutting it up. When our server brought our food, we asked right away for the check because we were now in a hurry. We had to ask for it again when we finished eating. I don't know what's going on here. I have been here for lunch before and found it pretty good but we were basically the only customers then. I'm not sure if they were short staffed-I saw five servers or if the servers aren't trained well. I waitresses in college and understand it isn't an easy job, but this was awful. We didn't see the owner and I'm not sure if he is there much anymore. If I were him, I would be there waiting tables if I were short staffed or so busy my staff couldn't effectively manage. It will be a good long time before I make my way back to Vagabond Kitchen and it disappoints me to say that. read more

Not super thrilled with lunch, so I'm not sure whether to give dinner a chance or not. Prob should've listened to the reviewer who said the Cuban wasn't anything special, but nothing else was that appealing to me, and I usually love Cubans, so I ended up getting it. I'm thinking I've had 10-12 Cubans in my life, and this was among the bottom three. Very ordinary. Also, I upgraded to truffle fries, and could barely taste any truffle oil. Tried my DP's burger (the one with portobellos instead of a bun). It was good, but not phenomenal. They offered a sample of their chili-of-the-day, which I appreciated, but I didn't care for it. Also, our lunch was $30, which seemed high for what we got. So yeah, after looking forward to trying this place for maybe a year, def a bit disappointed. read more

Since Vagabond has moved into their current establishment, I have eaten there four times. I've had two pasta dishes and two meat dishes and each time the food was pretty good. I say pretty good because I'm a gal who likes my food to stay warm until I finish the last bite within reasonable time and that hasn't always been the case. Otherwise just based on taste I have been pleased. As far as the decor goes, well, it's just not for me. It presents a dim cool feeling I would expect in a bar atmosphere rather than a restaurant serving food at $$-$$$ prices. The owner appears nice and has made rounds to ask how everything is almost every time we have dined. Tip: If you are with others who have a disability and require comfortable seating, you may want to request a booth or bring a small pillow for them to sit on or lean against. Happy we stayed! We sat down with our table of six and Molly shared they were out of a few items here in their scratch kitchen; corn fritters? Jalapeño poppers, and veggie lasagna. We debated jumping ship and trying a different place but stayed! We went with the spinach artichoke dip and honey BBQ duck wings as appetizers. Get the duck wings, even people at our table who claim to not like or have ever tried duck liked them! Nothing special to share about their old fashioned mix drink, for a place with some many bourbon options we anticipated something different. The blueberry mule, moth drink and Appalachian water were all pleasers! All six of us ordered burgers. The brew again and coffee burger-everyone was very happy. Cooked well. The fries were great, very similar to Penn Station if you are familiar with that restaurant. Dessert? Yes, please! I am not a cheesecake person but, the rest of the crew is and they loved the pistachio cheesecake. The six of us were staying at Oglebay and came here on a Thursday evening. The menu looked interesting and it did not disappoint. The ginger lemonade and the cucumber mojitos were delicious. Don't miss the corn fritters. the sauce is spicy, but they are the best I ever tasted. The slaw on the Just Dew It Chicken perfectly complimented the juicy chicken. I had the Rico's Jibarito burger and could not be happier. Tastiest burger I've had in a while. Perfectly cooked and seasoned and great fries. I imagine any of the burgers would be great with the meat they use. My wife had the Barbie Mac and two had the pork loin chop which did not disappoint. Order one of those if you're hungry! There was a little wait for our dinners but don't let that stop you. It was the best meal we had in Wheeling all week! And the service was great! Very personable and attentive. I seem to remember a little sauce with even the beefiest chili in TX. A little beef stock sauce would be great. As it is, it is more like a heap of burrito filling. Don't get me wrong, it is a big bowl and totally delicious flavor. The Garlic Truffle Fries were flat out too salty for me, otherwise it could have been a great combination of flavors. It was nice to be able to use OpenTable to make a reservation ahead of time. It was crowded but we would have been fine just as walk-ins. We ordered our food and drinks fairly quickly after we sat down. Drinks and appetizers came to us in a timely manner with little wait time. We started with the hummus platter. The hummus was super tasty! I liked that the pita was thinly sliced too. Our main entrees came out shortly after we finished our appetizer. I had the vegetarian ravioli with vegetables. I would definitely get this again! So tasty, full of flavor. My husband got the Southwest Blackbean burger. He recommends that as well! The atmosphere and staff are great! It is clean and the staff members are very friendly and accommodating. I went here once and was disappointed, but decided to go back a second time to give it another chance. Sadly, the food here is overpriced for what you get. Our steak was burnt and over cooked the first time and the second time my steak was over cooked again in my wrap and it was was $19 for the wrap with truffle fries and tip. I would be happy to pay such a price for something delicious, but both experiences have left my wallet empty and taste buds disappointed. we want to like them, but we've been here 2 times and the service has been wicked slow. The good-husband and son liked the chicken and waffles. Chicken tenders were hot and juicy, waffles were fluffy and flavorful. The Texas Book of Dead Chili is really good and has nice heat. Waiting over 20 minutes for a partial delivery of food-bad. One order of chicken and waffles comes out and then 5 minutes later the second order. Delivering tepid food (biscuits and gravy) after waiting, bad. An upcharge of $8 for a half-cup of small shrimp that were pretty much plain? Getting a half-cooked grilled cheese (most of cheese not melted in center), bad. It seems like a nice place with a good menu, we've just not had the best luck here. Servers are friendly, place is clean, nice atmosphere. read more

I have been to Vagabond Kitchen four times. Two times were decent. The food was good and they make delicious mixed drinks. Two times were rather bad experiences and makes me question whether or not I'm going back. Our first experience was a bad one. My boyfriend ordered a pork chop that was raw and cold in the middle. When he mentioned his complaint to the waitress, she did not offer to do anything about it. She said "well, you ordered it medium" which is the recommended temperature on the menu. However, it was not cooked medium. It was cold and raw. After a year, we finally gave it a second chance and returned. We had a great experience. All of the food was great. We were very pleased with the staff. Because of our great experience I decided to go on my work lunch. I work one block away from Vagabond so I was excited that I could get good food on my break. It took about 45 minutes and my break was 1 hour so it worked out great for me. The food was delicious and the service was average. Today was my 4th time at Vagabond and it's Mother's Day. I walked into the restaurant and one family was waiting in front of us. They were quickly seated in under 3 minutes. The manager walks up to us and says "Sorry, guys. We're full." I felt confused because the party of 5 that walked in before us had no reservation. I asked if there was a wait time and he looked like he was never asked that question before. He said they had some pretty big parties coming in... My boyfriend and I immediately felt unwelcome because we were young and it was Mother's Day. In conclusion, I don't know what to think. I really want to love this place and support a small business. I want a great lunch spot to eat at every day. I'd love to say I could recommend this place to my friends and family, but I can't. My brother and I had lunch today and really enjoyed our time at the Vagabond Kitchen. Our server, I believe her name was Leigh Ann, was very courteous. She informed of us of the special and made good recommendations. They have a lot of unique cocktails. They were well crafted. I had their turkey bacon brioche sandwich with their truffle fries. Solid 4 stars for Vagabond. We were in town for a work conference and approx 20 of us came here for dinner. Thank you for accommodating our large party, for some reason most places were unable to do so which is baffling. Overall the service was ok, but most of our bills at the end of the meal were incorrect...draft beers added on to most(including ours)that weren't ordered and such. A lot of confusion that didn't need to happen. I started off with a grapefruit margarita and it was dreadful. The worst margarita I evertasted, verified by two other people trying it. Tasted like straight tequila. I sent it back and went with the house specialty Mountain Momma. Much better choice! As for the food, 5 stars all the way. I had the spinach salad with grilled chicken. Nice portion size, baby spinach with goat cheese, candied walnuts and raspberry vinaigrette. My husband ordered the Pork Porterhouse. A huge pork chop atop a mound of garlic cheesy mashed potatoes and a pile of onion straws. I tried this dish and loved it as well. Super tender pork which is rare to find these days. We all got a 10% military discount on our checks as well. Made sure to thank the chef on our way out that night. read more
