Travel extensively and lots of experience on trying new establishments. No issues with service. My brother and I ate dinner at 530 on a week night. Only two other tables filled. Made me wonder. The owner parks his motorcycle in the middle of the place for winter. Don't really understand that move. IF he is struggling for money to that degree, what is he investing in the food. We both had a burger and fries. We both felt the price was high for both beverages and food. Quality was just average. I agree with some of the other comments, the place could be cleaner. We sat by the windows in it was pretty cold. THis could be a great place esp with lack of places in downtown. Needs a revisit by owner on what he is trying to accomplish. We wont be back because of not a good selection of meals vs cost. read more

The first time I came there they had the bigger mac as their benefit burger and it was an absolute 10/10 along with the fries! This time I went they had the hot dog burger which they also blew out of the park, but I was disappointed this time by their fries which were not as good as last time. Also I ordered bbq duck wings as an appetizer and they are $16 so I figured it would be a pretty large portion. You only get SIX wings for $16 and they are not good at all. Also when my friend and I came in they were not super busy but they said it was a 45 min to an hour wait just to order because they were backed up. Looking around it looked like quite the opposite to me. No one seemed to be in a huge hurry to get people's food to them but maybe something else was happening. I don't know. All in all I must say I was a little disappointed with the food this time, I will definitely give them another try just in case I went there on a bad night cause the first night I went there was incredible! Last thing I will say is the food seems like it is over priced for the quality and portion size you get now. read more

This place is wonderful. My bf and I stopped after work and loved it! The salmon was superb as well as the hummus and pita chips. The black bean burger was delicious. Love this place! So good I had to write the review as I enjoy my Sunday brunch. Ate here several days as I stayed at the hotel connected to it for 5 days. Didn't have one thing I didn't like. Brunch is delicious, I wish I could drive from Harrisburg, Pa every Sunday just to enjoy their brunch. The ladies who are waiting tables are absolute sweethearts. I was looking for somewhere for my husband and I to have drinks and appetizers celebrating our anniversary and because of their online menu choose here. Their 2 page drink menu was exciting although the drinks shown online were not on the menu. We ordered and it took a about 5 minutes for drinks to arrive. There were only 3 other tables of patrons. We had Long Island Ice tea and a Madres you could not tell them apart except for the garnish when looking at them. The waitress had made them there was no bar tender in sight. She did ask how they were but what can you say. We had calamari & fried green beans which were very good. If the drinks had been better we may have stayed longer. My friends tell me at $9 & $10 per drink we should have said something to the staff but we didn't so here is my suggestion: with such an enticing drink menu have a bartender or train the staff to mix cocktails. read more

My bf and I ate here the other day for some early dinner and I really had my hopes set high considering all the great reviews this place has. I was overwhelmed by disappointment. I feel like the menu, especially when it came to the sides was lacking in full. You either get greens or "Grown up Mac N Cheese" and let me tell you... Don't do it. Do NOT order the mac n cheese. See, they leave out on the menu that they put Bleu Cheese in it which then makes it taste/smell like mold and soured milk. The most DISGUSTING thing I've ever eaten, and I've eaten bugs so. I also had the burger that gets a rub down in coffee and has caremalized onions (which I love on a good burger), and it also was awful. It was so damn sweet I could barely stomach each bite I took and the only reason I was still attempting to eat it was because I don't like wasting life (beef comes from cows so someone died for my dinner lol). I had to literally move the mac n cheese off my plate to the side of the table because the smell coming from it was making me nauseous. When the waitress came out and asked if everything was doing good, she could tell by my face I wasn't happy. I asked about the mac n cheese and she informed me that it had Bleu Cheese in it and that the Chef "he just loves Bleu Cheese and practically puts it in everything on the menu!" You'd think that since most people hate Bleu Cheese, they could have at least put that on the menu in fine print. The bf couldn't even finish his burger as well because it was too sweet. I hate that we wasted the food but now I know not to come back. read more

I've eaten at Vegabond for dinner and Sunday brunch close to the time they opened for business. I like their salads and for brunch you can't go wrong with their French toast although everything I tried I was hot and wholesome good. I know of the chef and he has a good reputation for using good ingredients and preparing every dish like its his first. I recommend this restaurant. read more

What a surprise! We were in Wheeling overnight and had no idea what to expect. The menu was diverse. Our black bean burgers paired nicely with the local craft beer and the truffle fries were the perfect mix of flavors. Man, I hate to hurt a local business but I have to be honest. Stopped by for lunch, very clean. Super busy!! My table of 4 was seated, but waited an hour before getting drinks, and another 45 minutes for food. No worries considering that they seemed short staffed. The food is where they lost me though. My moms wrap had huge peppercorns stuffed in at random, with no taste otherwise. Apparently the burgers were good however. I got the Mediterranean salad and truffle fries. The fries are an acquired taste, but I did like them. However, the salad was overall just irritating. A ton of hot peppers and salsa mixed in. Without those two, I think I may have enjoyed it. However, I am gluten-free and did not get sick, so it is important to note that the kitchen cares. Something sort of odd, there were stinging insects in the restroom. Someone warned me so I had to walk down the street afterwards! I'm sure that is not the norm for them though. read more

We were driving from Cincinnati back to DC and stopping overnight at the half-way point of Wheeling, WV. We checked Yelp for a place to eat with our two kids under 10 years old and found Vagabond Kitchen. We were delighted! A wonderful kids' menu and wonderful adult menu--including bourbons, local beers and some wines. Amy welcomes us wonderfully and Jenny took incredible care of us--paced perfectly and the food was delicious. We started with the hummus appetizer which came with soft warm pita and crunchy chips. My kids got Mac-n-cheese and grilled cheese and my husband ate the smoked turkey sandwich and I had the steak. Everything was perfectly prepared. The staff were wonderful and the music was eclectic. It was the perfect spot and exactly what we needed. Kudos to the owner! read more

Food is great. Had calamari app. Very yummy sauce. Both had burgers...diy and hangover, again solid pefformance. Service is slow as there is no hostess or busing staff, so be sure to be ready to wait for a few minutes upon arrival. Talk of expansion was had with our server but how can they expand when they don't have a handle on the current space? Good food, hope they iron out the kinks. read more

Our first trip there was in April and we loved it! The service was top-notch and the food was fantastic! My son ordered chili, a first for him as he typically doesn't eat it and he wants to go back for more! I had the chili too and I agreed, it was delicious! Just a little kick to it! I am a small veteran owned business. I made a good faith effort to do business with this establishment. The marketing director humiliated me in front of my client, tried to steal my client's business and cost me a significant loss of income damaging my business. I was told by the Chef Matt I was welcome there. The staff took my reservation and was eager for the business. All they had to do was make a simple phone call and apologize and politely say they could not accomodate the reservation. It's a shame as the Chef looks uber talented and I have sat on economic development committees with him. Instead, I got slander, lies and threats. Based on other reviews, perhaps they should let everyone know of their elitist practices and we will be happy to go elsewhere for our dining experience. I am truly hurt by the aggressive business practices employed against me when a simple polite phone call would have been sufficient. This is sad but these are the kind of people we are dealing with. read more

Stopped in with a group of 8. They had an open 8 top but the hostess said it would be at least a half hour because the "kitchen couldn't handle the numbers". I had eaten there once before and food was average but not terrible so I could not imagine them being unable to handle a not quite full dining room. While trekking through the Ohio River Valley, I happened upon a skull placed on a stake, seeming to tell me to stay away. I ignored this warning and found myself in the town of Wheeling. Within its towering buildings, ripe with age there was a basement. There I found a kitchen... immediately I was greeted by a flash of lightning and a snarling, roaring, beastly, monster-bear riding a high performance motorcycle. I shook with fear... The ground was rumbling as I was lifted onto my seat. A pitcher of ice water was presented before me to quench the fire inside my throat. I drank my fill. Out from the steaming, blaze of a kitchen came a chicken sandwich the likes of which I've never seen. Onions expertly caemelized in the fires of hell, apples picked from what must have been an enchanted orchard lay grilled inside it's "grains of the gods" bread. On the side I find chips sprinkled with a dusting of the sacred herbs. My pupils dilated, my heart swelled, the chorus grew louder and all the colors of my soul were painted on the black and white portraits that surrounded me. The salsa flowed like blood. The brownies, the tea, the french toast, the decadence, the aroma, the value!! It was all too much! I found light in the shadows, I found hope in the pits of darkness. Wow! I have eaten all over the world and worked for five years at Austin Texas's most locally sourced restaurant, so the snob in me was pleasantly surprised to find this awesome danged tasty place in Wheeling WV. The ingredients are high quality, the menu has familiar comfort items as well as creative items the chef has come up with, and they even have totally rad live music. Great service and prices, especially considering the quality of the MEAT! yum! Got to meet the owner and his wife, and they're an inspiring young couple working on the American dream. Eat here! I hate to give this review but I feel like this place needs some constructive criticism. Me and a co-worker decided to come in for lunch time and sit down. There were barely any customers so we figured it would be pretty quick service, we were wrong. We ordered almost immediately and waited 45 minutes for our food. She got a salad and I got a burger. Nothing hard, no substitutions. She was served the wrong soup and my toppings on my burger were completely wrong. The burger was very bland, had little to no taste. When she got the correct soup the turkey chili was very sparse on ingredients, it was more of a soup. Their grab and go sandwiches and fries are delicious so I will continue to get those but as for eat in dining I don't think I will return. There is no reason to wait 45 minutes on a slow lunch day for any meal, especially one that was subpar at best. read more

What a gem we have here in the Ohio Valley with the Vagabond Kitchen. The space is decorated in local artists' work that grabs your interest and adds to the experience of dining here. The lighting is subdued but perfect for the space. I didn't catch the name of the lady who greeted us, but she was really pleasant and welcoming. Our server was Sara, and she was flat out awesome. Super enthusiastic about the menu and took great care of us during the meal. For starters we ordered the Hummus Platter. It is outstanding, handcrafted homemade hummus with a perfect amount of feta, olives, peppers to go along. Its served with perfectly toasted rounds of Italian bread. We ran out of the rounds before the hummus was gone and Sara brought us a few more to finish it up. My girlfriend ordered the Lamb Burger and I ordered the Korean BBQ Tacos. Her burger was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and at Sara's suggestion she topped it with a bit of hummus and their own handcrafted tzatziki sauce and it really worked with the entire flavor of the burger. The roll it was served on was fresh and rounded out the whole burger perfectly. Served with fresh cut steak fries which were also cooked and seasoned well. My tacos were outstanding. The flavors of the Korean BBQ were spot on to the flavors I fell in love with eating in Korean spots around the country. Meat was perfectly cooked, the fresh greens were spot on, and then there was the kimchi. This place makes its OWN kimchi! Who does that?? The Vagabond Chef does that's who! And its spicy sour perfection! The tortillas for my tacos were fine, not a whole lot you can do with a corn tortilla. My side was fresh tortilla chips and salsa. No surprise they make the salsa fresh as well and it's outstanding. Overall, I can say this is one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time and the fact its local just assures we will be regulars in no time. If you live in the area and haven't been here, change that as soon as you can. If you are passing through, you owe it to yourself to get off the interstate and stop by. read more

We were on a road trip and looking for an interesting place to stop for some quality food. Found the Vagabond Kitchen online and liked its locally sourced ethos and creative menu. We were not disappointed - had a delicious lunch: chips and salsa - as a Californian who grew up on real Mexican food, I appreciated the freshly fried tortilla chips and the fresh made salsa, Korean bbq tacos - couldn't believe how good they were with homemade kimchi - and a lamb burger which my friend said was one of the best he'd ever had - he appreciated the home made bread in particular). Excellent, prompt and attentive (but not intrusive) service. Highly recommend this place. Also love the location - next time we hope to check out some of old town Wheeling. On a personal level I really appreciate that the owners of this restaurant chose to invest in the old downtown. read more
