I really wanted this place to be good because it is so close to where I live. Me and my friends got some slices to go and they were very average. Maybe the pizza when ordered is better? Service seemed incompetent because other people that had ordered in had to wait at least 15 minutes infront of us and had to be asked numerous times what they ordered. Two stars for the nasty woman who screwed up my order. Usually a 4 star food experience. I try to make it over to Vace about once every 2 weeks or so for their subs. Very good, excellent portion, great price. Hint: Do not order from the surly older woman. Today I ordered a turkey sub lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo. How you are out of tomatoes at noon, I don't understand, but whatever. Usually its no lettuce on Mondays - again, bizarre. So she asks me 3 different times if I want other items - oil and vinegar, hot peppers, etc...On a turkey sub? Eww. Anyway, after walking the 10 or so minutes back to my office I now have an Italian with mayonaisse. Not a turkey sub. I certainly would have ordered the oil and vinegar and hot peppers on an Italian. Great pizza! Fresh ingredients and various cheeses allow ....errr mandate you to create a true master pizza (no special deals, just a young kid practicing his Italian with the chef). Since there's no seating, grab .a blanket (or bamboo mat), a box of fermented grape juice from next door, someone you want to enjoy spending time with, and cross Wisconsin and have a picnic in a little park....oh, and consider a film at Landmark Cinema before or after, and prepare to smile for awhile, I know I still did. read more

I stopped by the other day to try the pizza. I tried a slice of pepperoni and a slice of plain. I don't know what some other reviewers were talking about when they said the slices were HUGE, because they weren't. I know huge slices b/c I've spent many a drunken evening in my 20s down in Adams Morgan, and gave in to the Pizza Mart temptation, but I digress. The pizza slices were a decent size, but not huge. The lady behind the counter asked me if I wanted them heated, and I said yes. So I waited for her to heat up the slices, and watched as a guy in his late 20s to early 30s come in to buy a slice of pepperoni. He did not want it heated. I started to wonder why a lot of men I know really enjoy room temperature or cold pizza. I was also wondering if I was being high-maintenance because I asked for them hot. Then I was handed the bag of warm pizza, for only $1.60 a slice. What a great price! When I got back in the car with my husband, I immediately tore into the bag and foil. I was impressed with the crust. It was crisp, yet retained enough moisture to be enjoyable, and not desert-dry. The sauce wasn't overbearing--there was a perfect amount of sauce on the slice, and it held its shape enough so that I didn't make a nasty mess, because I can sure get clumsy while eating in the car. Overall, I recommend the slices. I can't wait to go back and buy a whole pizza--it will probably be even better than a slice, which has probably been sitting around for a while. Veni, Vidi, VACE! I came, I saw, I experienced carb-laden deliciousness! My favorite pizza in the District (this review applies to both the Bethesda location and the DC location)! Vace's slices have thin, perfectly done crust, tangy, fresh-tasting sauce, and high-quality toppings. Pizzas run about 10 bucks for a large pie--an excellent deal, especially considering that Vace's pizzas are far tastier than many of the more expensive pies in the city. Pretty much everything else Vace carries is mouth-wateringly yummy and reasonably priced by DC standards as well-there's a whole variety of subs (for $5.25 a pop) and loaves of fresh Italian bread. You can also pick up any of a number of frozen homemade sauces, entrees and pastas that you can pass off as your own home-cooking. It's always pretty fast here too, and they're helpful. The only sucky part is finding a place to eat your pizza or sub if you're starving...you either have to find a suitable bench, or eat in the car. If Vace could just add a few little cute cafe tables... read more

I met my friend here at this deli because he said he needed to eat at this deli before he went back to Korea for his job. He suggested we meet at Barnes and Noble because the place was hard to find and it was. It's tucked away behind an office building so it is indeed hard to find. My friend ordered the Italian sub and I ordered the Sopressata salami spicy sub. The salami sub is the best sub I ever in recent memories. The Italian sub bread was fresh and the Sopressata salami delicious. And even more shocking, the Italian sub was only $5.50 and the salami sub was $6.50, which is ridiculous cheap for the Washington area yet alone an expensive place like Bethesda. The only complaint from me is that there are no tables to dine in. It is strictly carryout only. Overall, I want to come back and try a few other items, definitely buy some Sopressata salami to go and try their pizza which looked fantastic. Best pie in DC. As far as I'm concerned, personal-type pizzas like the kinds from 2 Amy's and Pizza Paradiso don't count (and they're not as tasty as Vace pie anyways). I prefer Brooklyn-style although Chicago-style does in a pinch. Vace's sold me 2 slices of crispy (yet still somewhat foldable... ok not really) delicious crust topped by sublime mozzarella and great sauce. Not greasy at all. Add in a can of Limonata (which is unfortunately way too hard to find in the DC area) and you've got a fantastic light lunch for $4.70 or so. Cheap, delicious food - can't go wrong. It's not the best pizza in the world - couple places in NYC are a little better to my purely subjective taste - but it's pretty close. Definitely going back to try a full pie and some of their homemade lasagna. read more

Everyone raves about this place, but I just don't get it. I've been to the Bethesda location several times and just don't see what's so special. The pizza is thoroughly unremarkable. It sits out in a warmer all day (and shows) and comes in a few varieties. They'll add extra ingredients to the pre-cooked, somewhat stale slice if you like. I suppose that counts as fresh toppings? The dough is thoroughly unremarkable and the sauce is forgettable. The slices are large, and they are cheap, and they aren't terrible, but they're really not any better than you'll find at the Corner Slice (actually, giving a few seconds thought on the matter. Corner Slice makes better pizza.) Furthermore, the pizza is definitely better than Victors. If I lived nearby, I would certainly pick up slices on a semi-regular basis, but it would be more out of convenience than anything else - this just ain't special enough to go out of the way to eat it. As far as being an Italian grocer, I don't see very much that I can't buy for the same or less at a Whole Foods, or even a good Giant. Just carrying a bunch of Sun's of Italy canned goods does not really impress me. The homemade pastas are decent, but nothing that really blew my mind. However, as it's not the easiest thing in the world to find decent homemade pasta I'll give 'em credit for giving residents that option, and at a decent price as well. Now, about the subs... Are you kidding me? Decent olive spread, flavorless cheese, and a few slices of cold cuts lying between a large slab of unremarkable bread. That's your sub. Again, it is cheap, and due to the amount of bread, it is fairly filling. So, it does fill the belly for a cheap price, but it's not anything special in terms of a sandwich. My personal opinion is that people "want" to like this place so much that they've convinced themselves it's something special. Furthermore, Vace has been around in their present locations long enough that they have developed a following who have convinced themselves that it's something special. As a result, the place has become the epitome of over-hyped neighborhood gem. Honestly, if you want a FANTASTIC Italian cold cut sandwich in the Bethesda area at lunch you should go over to Olazzo's. Now THAT's a delicious sandwich. I'd recommend Cornucopia as well, but with the slight reservation that it seems a couple of bucks pricier than it lives up to being. That being said, it's another solid Italian sandwich that shows up Vace's sandwich as being the unremarkable thing that it is. read more

First of all, I have no idea why this place has 4 stars. I ordered a pepperoni pizza and meatball sub. The pizza was bland, greasy, and the pepperoni was odd tasting. The sandwich was burnt on the outside, leaving the roll rock hard, and they chop up peppers and onions and mix it in with the sauce, which I did not care for. If you want a true Italian Store, check out the Italian Store in Arlington, it's 100 times better than this hole in the wall. read more

4.5 stars. My brother first introduced me to Vaces when we were in high school and had various jobs at the small Bethesda boutiques. We went in one day and grabbed a slice, I simply died. This pizza was amazing. I am originally from NYC and this pizza was the closest I have come to being New York style pizza, plus the slices are HUGE. and CHEAP. They also have an amazing selection of italian delicacies which is greatly appreciated by me, because I lived in Italy, and some times get a craving for a random and slightly bizarre traditional italian food, like those candy coated almonds. There pre-made fresh pastas are exactly what I remember from Rome and they carry almost all of the same brands that I miss. Their pastas don't need anything but a little parm reg, a little romano, and some EVOO. Next time you're there pick up a can of tomato sauce from sun of italy or w/e brand they are carrying, it will keep forever and you can use it on that dry pasta you have in the back of your pantry. Much better then anything you can get at a super marcato like "newmans own." yuck. I guarantee it will is 10 times better. only drawl back is that it isn't opened late, and has funny weekend hours. plus, as everyone else has mentioned, it is a DELI you can grab food to eat right then and there, but they don't have seats and that might be awkward. I have always just taken my slice to B and N and sat by the fountain. If you're looking for a sit down meal, how hard is it to boil water? and wash your own dish? The best pizza in the Washington DC area, if you really know "good pizza." I am originally from northeastern Pennsylvania in an area that is very italian. Italian cooking and pizza making are taken very seriously, and is big business where I come from. I've lived in Bethesda for so long (and been searching for a really good pizza place sine Il Forno closed) and I never even knew Vace existed until a few weeks ago. Since then I have gotten pizza from there several times. I think it's mostly like a deli/Italian grocery store but they do have some things that you can get hot, like sandwiches and pizza. The pizza is some of the best in Bethesda. It's reasonably priced and they have very fresh ingredients. The only catch is you have to get it carry out. There are no tables and they don't deliver. I came across this place while doing research on places where I could order food for a business meeting at almost the last minute. I'm not from around here, so I had no idea if this was a good place at all....but I really needed to call in an order and they were the only pizza place that was open early (9 AM). I called them up to order several boxes of pizza - I didn't have a menu on hand, but the lady I spoke with on the phone was very helpful in coming up with combinations of toppings for each pizza. When I drove there to pick the pizzas up, the place was not what I expected...it looked sort of like a small convenient store with a pizza counter at the back. I didn't see any place to actually eat the food, so it's really just a pickup/to go place. It looks like a popular place though, as while I was there were a number of people coming in to order food. Parking space is limited, which is expected since this is just a to go place. The pizzas were ready at the agreed time and they smelled good! The lady at the counter (probably the same person I spoke with on the phone) was nice and helped me load the pizzas and bottles of water I paid for in my car. I am glad I came across this place because I received a lot of compliments over my food choice Pizzas I ordered: 1. White Pizza with spinach and onion - box went empty in no time. I loved this pizza too 2. Pancetta (Italian bacon) and basil - one of the more popular ones in the meeting too. I liked this too, but it was a bit oily though 3. Pepperoni and sausage - I didn't try this, but the others seemed to like this 4. Mushroom and artichokes - I didn't try this, but it looks like the least favorite among the four. The pizzas were more popular than the Corner Bakery sandwiches I ordered for the same people the previous day - and even more awesome is it was 70% cheaper! The only downside to the place was they don't do delivery. The place was about 11 minutes away from the office, but due to road constructions and rush hour traffic it took me an hour to drive there and back. read more

WARNING: Do NOT order a meatball sub. My wife brought one home to me because, like so many other people, we like the pizza here and assumed all their food was good. Not so. There were no meatballs per se on the sandwich. There were a few thin slices of what possibly started out as traditional meatballs. The ratio of bread to meet was more than 10 to one. I opened the bread and used a fork to scrape off the scattered meat pieces. My guess is that if the meat bits were glued together, the equivalent of two medium-sized meatballs would have rested on the thick 12-inch roll. If we lived closer to Vace, I would have taken it back. They should be ashamed of themselves. read more

Great pizza here. Tucked away in a small side street of Bethesda, this Vace serves the same delicious pizza found in their Cleveland Park location. The pizza crust is crisp and tasty, while the cheese and pepperoni are flavorful and the pepperoni is somewhat spicy. The pies are pretty cheap, and the service is quick enough. There's also a deli inside (as the name suggests). Cuts of salami, mozzarella and other cheeses, as well as beers and sodas (the Limonata is great). So glad that I can go over here now for excellent pizza instead of Cleveland Park. read more
