On Route 250, you may have overlooked it, if it hadn't been for the huge sign by the road! It's tucked aways back off the main road with a few parking spots, and a flagpole out front proudly waving the ol' red, white and blue. Inside is bright and clean, well stocked packaging center, post office boxes for rent. Anthony Trollope, prominent writer of the Victorian Era, mid-1800's, is given credit to the widespread of neighborhood mailboxes at the corners of the London streets. This creative idea then spread to America! In London, the boxes were originally green but they blended in with the scenery too well, so the "pillar boxes" were then painted bright red so they can be seen from afar. Here in the states, street boxes were also painted an olive drab green, but in 1955, the colors were changed to red, white & blue. Then, in 1971, the US Postal Service, decided to change them to the deep royal blue we see today! Anthony Trollope is a man of letter for sure!! Lobby hours are 9:30-4:30 M-F, and 9:00-12:00 Sat. Money orders, standard services, stamps, but no passport services. Local # (804)784-3624. They break for lunch, so call ahead. With the larger post offices overloaded due to the pandemic and the holiday season, this tiny mail center a great alternative if you want to avoid long lines! The residents in Goochland County know that the Oilville post office is one slick business!!

This part of Oilville is not a very busy area. It's pretty must just through traffic and I think that helps keep customers at this post office to a minimal. There is only one register on the inside, so if someone has a lot of stuff to send out or if there's more than 3 people in line, it might take some time until you make your way to the desk. Staff here is always friendly. Super, southern friendly! Lol. For the most part, I've never seen more than two other customers here. But I've also never been here around rush hour.

For a smallish town like Ashland, this post office was super busy! The line was to the door!…read more Don't confuse this building with the one a few steps down the street. The "old" Ashland post office, built in 1940, is located on the next block, which still has the post office gold lettering on the brick facade. It now houses attorneys and other offices. The actual "newer"post office, built in 1992, is located at 301 England Street. Definitely a more modern building, but still possesses some small town charm. The interior is impressive with Tuscan columns, high ceilings, A-framed glass windows and Spanish tiled floors. The large, open floor plan creates a well-lit, airy space. For such spacious area, I was surprised that they don't provide passport services here. Their services are limited to the typical ones you'll find at most such post offices: P.O. boxes, money orders, stamps, shipping supplies, greeting cards, bulk mail and general delivery. I didn't even see a self-serve kiosk. I feel like they could expand their services to accommodate the Ashland community. After all, it is the "Center of the Universe"!

The other people are not helpful, often making problems worse. I have had NUMEROUS terrible issues with mail holds, including them getting the dates wrong. The carriers are also less than stellar, often not delivering our mail and giving us the wrong mail. I witnessed a situation today where a patron came to pick up a packae that should have been delivered to him, the carrier did not take it to his house. So, he had requested for pick up at the post office and had appropriate notification for pick up, but the carrier picked it up and planned to deliver it after all. My most recent complaint is regarding a travel hold, which the carrier misread, and started holding mail ten days early. I had been notified that i receiving a new credit card, and when I didn't receive when I was told that I would, I went over to the Post Office and found that the hold was initiated early, I got all today's mail except the credit card. I am going to have to go over there at 8:30 a.m. to find out where it is.....this is ENORMOUSLY FRUSTRATING! THEY NEED TO HIRE MORE PEOPLE AND TRAIN THEM AND EDUCATE THE CARRIERS TO BE MORE ATTENTIVE TO THE MAIL THAT THEY DELIVER AND THE PEOPLE ON THE ROUTE!!! IT NEVER SEEMS TO GET ANY BETTER....
