Just look for the little brick building that's shaped like a monopoly house! The Oilville post…read moreoffice is small but mighty. On Route 250, you may have overlooked it, if it hadn't been for the huge sign by the road! It's tucked aways back off the main road with a few parking spots, and a flagpole out front proudly waving the ol' red, white and blue. Inside is bright and clean, well stocked packaging center, post office boxes for rent. Anthony Trollope, prominent writer of the Victorian Era, mid-1800's, is given credit to the widespread of neighborhood mailboxes at the corners of the London streets. This creative idea then spread to America! In London, the boxes were originally green but they blended in with the scenery too well, so the "pillar boxes" were then painted bright red so they can be seen from afar. Here in the states, street boxes were also painted an olive drab green, but in 1955, the colors were changed to red, white & blue. Then, in 1971, the US Postal Service, decided to change them to the deep royal blue we see today! Anthony Trollope is a man of letter for sure!! Lobby hours are 9:30-4:30 M-F, and 9:00-12:00 Sat. Money orders, standard services, stamps, but no passport services. Local # (804)784-3624. They break for lunch, so call ahead. With the larger post offices overloaded due to the pandemic and the holiday season, this tiny mail center a great alternative if you want to avoid long lines! The residents in Goochland County know that the Oilville post office is one slick business!!

This part of Oilville is not a very busy area. It's pretty must just through traffic and I think that helps keep customers at this post office to a minimal. There is only one register on the inside, so if someone has a lot of stuff to send out or if there's more than 3 people in line, it might take some time until you make your way to the desk. Staff here is always friendly. Super, southern friendly! Lol. For the most part, I've never seen more than two other customers here. But I've also never been here around rush hour.

We were running errands in Mineral today, and dropped into the post office to pick up some Christmas-themed stamps. The USPS employee was friendly, parking was easy and sufficient, BUT they had already sold all of their Christmas-themed stamps (more than two weeks before Christmas!) So, our Christmas cards will be going out with dahlia-themed stamps!

This post office isn't much to look at... the long brick building houses dozens and dozens of post office boxes for mail delivery in this rural town. With a population of under 600 folks, you won't find this mail center very busy. The mail carriers use regular vehicles to deliver mail, rather than official USPS mail trucks. The interior is shabby, peeling walls, dingy counters and dirty floors. Shipping and mailing supplies were low, and the racks were disorganized with several boxes just strewn on the floor. There was a greeting card display which I doubt gets much action. The clerks are friendly and efficient, and seem to know most of the neighbors around town. You won't be in a gold rush here! There are a few drop off mail boxes on the side of the building. The hours are 8:30-1:00, 2:00-4:30 M-F, and Saturday 9-11. No passport services, but the usual small town services are provided. If the workers here get the "lead" out, spruce up this government building and take some pride in this place, I "zinc" they could earn some extra gold stars! But perhaps, bureaucracy is under"mining" its progress!

The population has fluctuated sometimes as high as 100, but the number tends to dwindle. Yes, the history of this tiny unincorporated place on the map has some cool history: this was the location of the Rassawek, a Monacan Indian Nation settlement. English settlers occupied the area and it was used as an arsenal for awhile. In 1788 the town became incorporated, and was a shipping stop for the tobacco trade. Then by the 1950's due to the decline of the railroad and natural disasters many homes and buildings were either destroyed, flooded or abandoned. The mayor proposed to disincorporate the town in 2014 and eventually passed in 2016 as money couldn't be raised to save the historic town. Main Street now looks like a ghost town, with dilapidated buildings, the haunting remains of the railroad, and just a corner market and the post office hidden down a side street. The post office is charming and well cared for despite its rundown neighbors. Inside it's clean and bright. It's a shame this place couldn't make it because the St. Joseph's church is beautiful and has some remarkable statuary and a popular shrine, also many of the houses in the neighborhood are stately and elegant.
