However- if you are in the vicinity of Woodford, Virginia- prepare to step back into the past! The person who greets,(YES, GREETS) you at the counter is pleasant and helpful. Your request is taken seriously and handled in a timely and friendly fashion. The first time I availed myself of the services here, I truly thought I was in a time warp. I have since , returned and each trip has been a wonderful reminder that there are indeed folks who try to do their jobs in a happy and effective manner!

It's history, the colorful post offices all over the country, and meeting the postmasters all intrigue me! Ruther Glen is an unincorporated community that's serves about 16,000 folks! This post office has odd hours: M-F 9-4:30 closes from 1:30-3 for lunch - haven't seen a post office that closes that long for lunch but good for them! Sat. 10-12.

(Rt. 33) Is scenic, dotted with farmland and gorgeous rolling hills. The post office is on the main "downtown" road that runs through the small business district. The post office is open M-F from 8-11, 12-4:30, (closes for lunch) and Sat. from 8-11. Lobby hours are 24/7. This branch doesn't offer passport service, you can, however, purchase money orders here. There's plenty of parking and a drive up mailbox. Last mail pick up is 4:30 weekdays, 11 am on Saturday. Just a few other businesses are nearby, including the Food Lion, Montpelier's only grocery store. Next to the post office is this cool antique pick up truck that I couldn't resist! But you won't find President James Madison's Montpelier home here in this sleepy village, it's north, about an hour away. (There's another post office nearby that historic landmark with a similar name: Montpelier Station Post Office, different zip code.)

It's tucked aways back off the main road with a few parking spots, and a flagpole out front proudly waving the ol' red, white and blue. Inside is bright and clean, well stocked packaging center, post office boxes for rent. Anthony Trollope, prominent writer of the Victorian Era, mid-1800's, is given credit to the widespread of neighborhood mailboxes at the corners of the London streets. This creative idea then spread to America! In London, the boxes were originally green but they blended in with the scenery too well, so the "pillar boxes" were then painted bright red so they can be seen from afar. Here in the states, street boxes were also painted an olive drab green, but in 1955, the colors were changed to red, white & blue. Then, in 1971, the US Postal Service, decided to change them to the deep royal blue we see today! Anthony Trollope is a man of letter for sure!! Lobby hours are 9:30-4:30 M-F, and 9:00-12:00 Sat. Money orders, standard services, stamps, but no passport services. Local # (804)784-3624. They break for lunch, so call ahead. With the larger post offices overloaded due to the pandemic and the holiday season, this tiny mail center a great alternative if you want to avoid long lines! This part of Oilville is not a very busy area. It's pretty must just through traffic and I think that helps keep customers at this post office to a minimal. There is only one register on the inside, so if someone has a lot of stuff to send out or if there's more than 3 people in line, it might take some time until you make your way to the desk. Staff here is always friendly. Super, southern friendly! Lol. For the most part, I've never seen more than two other customers here. But I've also never been here around rush hour.

The exterior is fabulous! The cream and rust colored paint, the tree trunk columns, the wrought iron- all add the the charm and allure of this post office, which used to be a general store. I love when government post offices are unique and have so much character! Inside is an incredible museum of the post office, with antiques, old photos, and lots of wood and brass fixtures, even a wood stove! Cameron, the postmaster, was kind enough to give us a mini history of the area and welcomed us like we were old friends! They sold the elephant stamps which I hadn't seen before! The hours are M-F 9-1, Saturday 8:30-12.
