On Route 33, in the tiny hamlet of Montpelier, you'll find this cute post office that serves the…read morefine folks in the community. The country road that leads you to this part of Mountain Rd. (Rt. 33) Is scenic, dotted with farmland and gorgeous rolling hills. The post office is on the main "downtown" road that runs through the small business district. The post office is open M-F from 8-11, 12-4:30, (closes for lunch) and Sat. from 8-11. Lobby hours are 24/7. This branch doesn't offer passport service, you can, however, purchase money orders here. There's plenty of parking and a drive up mailbox. Last mail pick up is 4:30 weekdays, 11 am on Saturday. Just a few other businesses are nearby, including the Food Lion, Montpelier's only grocery store. Next to the post office is this cool antique pick up truck that I couldn't resist! But you won't find President James Madison's Montpelier home here in this sleepy village, it's north, about an hour away. (There's another post office nearby that historic landmark with a similar name: Montpelier Station Post Office, different zip code.)

You may have some long Lines at lunchtime, but I was in and out like first class delivery! It was rather spacious, clean, well-stocked. I love the postal system! It's history, the colorful post offices all over the country, and meeting the postmasters all intrigue me! Ruther Glen is an unincorporated community that's serves about 16,000 folks! This post office has odd hours: M-F 9-4:30 closes from 1:30-3 for lunch - haven't seen a post office that closes that long for lunch but good for them! Sat. 10-12.

Their hours are still clunky in my opinion (original complaint) but when they're open and Tiffany is there it's always a five-star visit. I've been feeling this way for a while now whenever I get to vibe w her, but especially today when she asked after my son. The last time we were in for stamps was weeks ago, my son was solving his Rubik's cube while in a splint following his hand surgery. Today her simple "I haven't seen you in a bit, how is your son doing?" meant a lot. ... and anyway I'm getting better at learning their hours, lol YES: kid friendly

Many times there would be brown or black specs all over my mail. I always wondered why they never wiped it off! Inside has the typical post office boxes, some mailing supplies, and a huge stack of local periodicals called Country Courier which serves the King William & King and Queen communities. I grabbed one to see what was happening in this small "village" of about 1,300 people. There's not much else around this area, a convenient store, gas station, etc. A clerk there wasn't quite friendly and when I asked about the building she asked another person. The postmaster named Brooke, didn't know much about the building either or it's history, so our conversation was pretty short. The website lists another person as the postmaster, Thelma Stephens, so I'm not sure what's up there. No passport service. Hours: 8-4:30 M-F closed for lunch from 1-2 Saturday 8-12

When you enter, there's a small enclosed entry that people are squashed in with masks on and no ventilation, waiting for a security guard to open the door of the main entrance allowing a few people at a time. We waited a few minutes, noticed too many people there, and left. I'm not going back and forth wasting time and gas to see if I can get in. Even though we had an urgent matter, I decided to use the drop box. Staff is friendly; might be worth asking for an appointment.

It's not easy. A "historic site ahead" sign would be more than helpful as you near mile marker 122. The marker denotes the spot where John Wilkes Booth (why do they always have a middle name?) was encountered by a New York cavalry regiment after he escaped Washington following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The marker reads: "This is the site of Locust Hill, Richard Henry Garrett's farm. Early on the morning of 26 April 1865, a 16th New York Cavalry detachment cornered John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, and his co-conspirator, David E. Herold, as the two men slept in Garrett's tobacco barn. Herold gave himself up, but Booth refused to surrender. The barn was set on fire, and Sgt. Boston Corbett shot the assassin, still inside. Booth was laid on the porch of the Garrett house and died about sunrise. The house and barn stood a short distance from this spot."
