This is the WORST Post Office in existence, and thus includes the one at 701 Main Street, Evanston, Illinois 60202. It seems you have to have rude, unprofessional, tacky, and non-customer service oriented to even get a job working for the USPS in Evanston, Illinois. My mail carrier will not deliver our mail before 6-7 pm. At 6:16 pm (and this is consistently), our mail still has NOT been delivered. The mail truck is here, but our mail is not. Should she be a Mail Carrier if she cannot deliver mail, on a daily basis, before 6 pm? The main Post Office at 1101 Davis Street is the WORST of the WORST. Consistently rude. Consistently only ONE window out of 7 or 8 is open, no matter how long the line is. And God forbid you try to ask them a question real quick. They are big on rolling (slamming) down the windows on customers. The Asian lady that works in the front became indignant when I asked her was she open. Dee, at the Main Street location refused service to a customer that asked her for USPS packing tape. She called the Police and refused service to EVERYONE because the person stated that she should post this horrible service on Instagram. I could go on, but even I am tired at this point. A couple weeks later (today) a good samaritan dropped off my package with a note. My package had been misdelivered to a resident hall and I am not a student nor do I live on campus. I reached out to have the post office make sure carriers double check the afters and I was met with poor customer service. The woman responding did not seem to comprehend that the original claim and why I was emailing today are the same issue. She kept going back to the "original" claim of "items missing." I had to explain that yes, the items in the package I reported missing because I had not received the package. There are the same items and that these are not two different claims. This is a terrible post office. It surprises me that nothing has been done about their customer service. There seems to be a sentiment that the customer facing folks at this post office are doing us a favor by doing their job and assisting us with our mail. I've had multiple negative interactions with the workers here and I intentionally avoid this place when I have a chance. Today I called to ask a simple question regarding my mail (If my mail carrier held any of my mail while I was renovating the front steps of my home); their response was for me to "come there to check". After having a terrible experience at a post office in Chicago yesterday, I looked on yelp for the best possible options and found this post office not far from my house. I was thrilled to find the lobby open at 6:50, both of the self-service machines functioning and the drop boxes in order. At 6:58, Vern opened the service windows, sternly (but not rudely) told people not to bunch and pointed out that she was the only one working, but started my stamp-buying transaction before 7 (the official opening time). I do have an Update on Main St. location. Though understaffed, Dee is usually helpful, efficient & pleasant. She has her bad days where there's a little attitude, but don't we all. As for Davis St., This is an Update from two stars to one star. I hate this place. This is what's wrong with civil service jobs and the whole hiring process for that and then having most of those workers not really have to ever perform to sone sort of minimum competency especially customs service. The lines in this place are forever long, the workers go at a snail's pace and 1/2 the time you try to use the machines they seem to be broken. Today while using the machine to mail postage- I heard someone on the other side clearing packages that seemed to be stuck in the chute. After getting my package ready (it was a small package), I went to put the package in the chute and the receptacle got stuck. So I tried to clear it. A woman cane out and asked that I not do that....I said, "ok, so how is the next person supposed to use it or how am I supposed to make sure it's not stuck?" I was told "to go stand in line and ask." She then proceeded to lecture me like a child after I politely said ok, not once but 3 times. I then lost it and sternly told her "I didn't need a lecture." This place is beyond inefficient and what's the point of using the postal machines if I'm going to have to ask someone to unstick my package. I REALLY HATE THIS PLACE! This place has always been a joke, and over the years I have avoided it like the plague. I recently ordered a new vinyl record from an online store. I have all of my records shipped to my work in Evanston, as packages get frequently stolen from my front porch. Tracking stated it was out for delivery on the morning of 12/23, then arrived back at the post office 4 hours later. My only guess as to why it was sent back, is I work at Evanston Hospital, and they most likely couldn't get to the loading dock to drop off my package? However, our receiving mail carriers at the hospital do work on the weekends. So, my only assumption is the USPS carrier didn't want to look for the right drop off, and decided to take it back to the post office. Here we are 4 days later, after the holiday, and the tracking now says, "delivery status not updated". I called the branch this morning, which I knew would be a pointless waste of time, and sure enough it was. I explained the situation to the man that answered the phone, and he replied with, "Look, I'm just a maintenance man, so I can't help you with what you need. There is only one supervisor here right now, and he is running around like a crazy person, and is not in a good mood. I would recommend calling back in a few hours, when maybe another supervisor might show up". I said "Oh, okay. Well". Then he hung up on me. No sorry for any inconvenience, or good bye, just a click. Knowing how bad this place is, I can't get too upset. It doesn't seem like anything will ever be done to fix the major problems at this location, so we the customers will always have to suffer. Since it's a government run business, the people that work there will never be reprimanded or fired. Ok so this post office seems to be short staffed the couple of times I've gone in and that in itself can cause issues. All that being said I had a package listed as "delivered," by USPS and that is was placed in a parcel locker which has a code. There was no package and no code. I called the post office early the next morning and was able to get an answer from a kind woman and the postal carrier who said he did put it in with the code. Ultimately I contacted the company who maintains the lockers. I don't know what went wrong but it was the locker company's error, not USPS and the contact with them was A+. read more

This location is absolutely awful. I have gone twice to address the same problem. Not only have the employees been unable to help me solve the problem, they have also been horribly disrespectful to me both times. From the moment I walk up to the window, they act like they are annoyed that I am even talking to them. Some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I really feel like this post office is either a hit or miss. If I get there and there's a long line, customer service is quick and efficient. If I get there and there's a short line, I jump a little for joy but then, customer service is super slow. I ALWAYS get insurance on all packages because this post office has lost a previous package of mine from a year ago (2006). I agree with Kake S that this place has beautiful architecture. If I can - I use the automated machine on the side and it works perfectly and I avoid the headache of lines. A lot of the time, I'll just order my postage online and pay the extra $1 instead of having to deal with lines. However, this place does have better hours than the branch on Main Street and it does offer more of a variety of stamps, too. Despite being understaffed, the The postal attendant there, "Dee" (last name unknown) seems to keep sometimes long lines moving smoothly and to persevere by offering her patrons a bright smile, a kind and positive attitude and the ability to swiftly and accurately manage their mailing needs. Alright, this IS A GOVERNMENT INSTITUTION here, so expectations are low. I live almost across the street so it is terribly convenient for me to walk my butt over there. I have read the reviews about the wait and the customer service, but again, I stress the point - U.S. Post Office = gov't run = what do you expect?! Anyway, I guess b/c I live so close I have the luxury to leave if the line freaks me out and come back later in the day (I have done this numerous times). Yes, the lines can be long, but nowhere near as long as some other post offices I've had the pleasure of waiting in line at (Los Angeles). I have really always found that the line moves fairly quickly and the customer service, from my experience, has been great. I don't remember why I ended up clear up in Evanston needing to wait in line to mail a package, but I did. I live in Rogers Park. Why go to the Evanston PO? First of all, I refuse, REFUSE to go to my local post office. That would be the one on Devon. There isn't usually too much of a line at this post office. But there was today. Okay, I figure I've lucked out so far, coming in and having to wait a bit was bound to happen sooner or later. Check this out though. THERE WAS A POSTAL EMPLOYEE GOING DOWN THE LINE AND MAKING SURE EVERYONE HAD THEIR FORMS FILLED OUT AND ASKING THAT WHOLE LIST OF QUESTIONS THEY ASK YOU WHEN YOU SHIP A PACKAGE. She then filled out a form for you to hand to the counter person when you got up there. I was gobsmacked. The post office? The United States Post Office? Doing something practical that would enhance the customer experience? Something to increase efficiency? Unheard of. Or maybe it's only unheard of in the city of Chicago. The service here has been going downhill over the last few years. Due to the long lines I've been mailing everything I need to mail package wise by using the internet and printing my postage and then just dropping it off in the bin. Because the online service today wouldn't take the address I was putting in, an address that was correct, I had to wait and deal with an actual person. Two people were helping people and there were 6 people in line. Because someone had come in with 3 insanely large boxes they tied up one person for the entire time I was there. 35 minutes is a crazy amount of time to wait. The line had grown to 15 when I left. I was annoyed at the lady at the counter who had a pretty crappy way about her. She treated me like an idiot because I didn't know that now you can't get a tracking number if you also want insurance. I go to the post office because I have to, not because I want to, and I'm pretty sure everyone else is there for the same reason - including the people at the counters. The service here is usually pretty slow, the lines are long, and there aren't often functioning pens at the stands. They are slow and don't care about the customer. I wait in line and they move so slowly it's almost unbelievable. I call them on the phone and they either tell me to call back in an hour (and then do it again when I call back), or place the call on hold and don't come back to it. Any other employees at any other job would be fired for incompetency but that doesn't happen at the post office because they have no accountability. The service usually sucks. I needed to use some tape once (like the normal office ones), and I saw some on the other side of the window so I asked if I could borrow some. The person at the window told no and made me buy the huge ass clear packing tape (which cost $4 or $5) when all I needed was one strip of tape. Then she was about to make me step from the window just because I needed to tape the label to my package. And then I would've had to get in line all over again. But at the last minute, she told me she made a mistake and took the packing tape back. She ended up sticking some other label on my package. The whole ordeal took way longer than necessary. But my overall experience today was pleasant. I had to wait in line for a while, but it went pretty fast when I got to the window. Guess I got lucky. Only reason this isn't getting less than 3 stars. If you're mailing textbooks, make sure to ask for the book rate. It takes about 5 days, costs $4.22, and includes tracking. read more

I have been shipping my product all over the country and it seems that my boxes get lost in Chicago. The tracking from USPS says the boxes have been delivered to the mailbox in/ next to. 1. Do not try to shovel the snow in winter when all the surrounding business did that. 2. Never delivery our package when signature is required. We ALWAYS have to come there to pick up. I always brace myself when entering a post office with an expectation of a lag in technology, unmotivated workers, lack of understanding about customer service, dismal, unattractive interiors. Boy, was I surprised when I walked into the Main Street location! The attendant there (I've since learned that her name is Dee) greeted me with a smile, serviced me with the brightest of attitudes and was genuinely helpful. The postmaster responsible for this location is Clara Stevens. It's hard to imagine she is not aware of the massive number of customer complaints about poor service. Other POs in proximity to this location got pretty dismal reviews as well so poor customer service must start from the top. I shipped a package in September 2018 and it never reached it's destination. For the next 3 months each time I tracked the package it was in Pittsburgh. Now it saids the information for the tracking number is not available A claim was opened on Nov. 5, 2018 then promptly closed on Nov. 6, 2018 but the package was not delivered to its destination in Lithonia, GA nor was it returned to me. It did little good for me to purchase supplies from the PO. Improve your service or close. read more
