Although I've only visited this location a few times since my move, every encounter has been professional and pleasant. I've had the same gentleman serve me - his name is Bryant - and he's been one of the most friendly and kind fellas I've met. Despite what people may think, being a postal worker ain't easy. I can't imagine rummaging through all that mail - I don't even like sorting through my own junk mail - and ensuring that it arrives at the correct destinations. There are only a few places that the postal service won't deliver to and the places that they do service, they must trek through all types of weather to get there. We stand in line and often times complain about the service, but it sure beats the DMV! Then again, that's a low bar to beat... I've always respected postal workers and am grateful to be able to send and receive mail/packages. How else would we get our Amazon deliveries or the love letters from our significant others (yes, some of us still send letters because we're old souls like that...)? During this particular challenging time, I encourage you to support the people that make our privileges possible. It is a privilege to be able to shop online and click away at our favorite products without having to step outside, knowing they'll arrive right at our doorstep. I encourage you to buy some stamps - Bryant literally went through every design they had in their possession and my inner child decided on a sheet of Hot Wheels. I came in the other day for some stamps and to mail quite a few envelopes out and I was greeted and helped out by Georgia. She was so professional and friendly, I was able to get in and out of the post office in a timely manner. I was actually a pleasant experience! I love this post office. Bryant is friendly and professional even when I've observed him having to deal with customers I only had to witness (and not even speak to or interact with) for 5-10 minutes. There were a couple of other ladies that I liked, but they finally moved on. Turnover is too high here. Once in a while, someone is surprised by the employees at a post office because they're helpful and do not seem "put upon". How about every time you enter, the counter person is not only cheerful, but she's relating to you. That's Janay at the San Rafael Post Office on D Street. She looks you in the eye, she smiles, she goes out of her way to get whatever you need, and in my case, a few minutes past closing. I've had a post office box here for nearly 30 years and although the fee has increased from ~ $30 to $160 per year I would not get my mail anywhere else. Low staff turnover (there's some new faces as some of the veterans retired) but I love the folks that have replaced them. I appreciate the personal attention I get when I go there, even from the ones that don't know me. I've seen many of them put up with a ton of crap from some of the more entitled Marin-ites and still manage a smile. The shift back to 2 way traffic has made it even easier to drop in. The Postal Experience here is classic. You have clerks who have probably been postal agents since birth even though they look 75. They have a lifeless look on their face but manage to be productive in a Postal kinda way. Yet, I find the sheer lack of emotion coming from them is, in a strange way, meditative. I enter this PO with complete knowledge that it may take 5-25 minutes regardless if the line has 5 or 15 people waiting. Does it matter what day of the year it is? No. Does it matter what time of day it is? No. Think of it as being in The Twilight Zone and every human waiting in line drops into standing meditation to recharge their life energy battery before emerging into reality on the other side. It's funny to watch how upset people get waiting in line wanting the person in front of them to go faster, faster, faster! "Oh, no! Don't ask the clerk questions when you get there!! What is it about the postal experience that insists on being standardly so horrible that it's actually now a caricature of itself? Everything from the lifeless faces of the postal works to the legendarily long lines, I actually waited 20 minutes before up and leaving just to get a single stamp. In fact, even the machines here are consistently terrible and don't even work, as was the experience today. When you look into the postal workers' eyes, I can pretty much see pinwheels spinning in the backs of their heads. Are they basically just waiting to die back there? I know it's the high season so everybody is shipping gifts all over the place, but this was amazingly bad for even the average post office. I've never moved so slowly in all my life and how the USPS is still in business is beyond me. Please, just let some motivated people take over. FedEx or UPS anyone? read more

Super rude ladies working here ..they are incompetent and refused to give me a receipt for a prepaid package because they tossed it in the back and didn't want to go get it to scan it in order to give me a receipt. I said I asked for one to begin with but she just totally ignored me and sent me to the other woman working there who was equally incompetent and rude... God, I hate this post office. It's so convenient for me, it's on my way home from work. Parking is actually not too bad, probably because everyone hates this location so much that they've given up on it. I've never seen more than 2 people working the counter, and they're slow and grumpy. I have actually interacted with a worker here who I couldn't understand at all. Her Asian accent was so strong that I had no idea what she was talking about, and she got really pissed when I kept saying "What?" It's a federal government job, where one is required to interact with people who speak English, or sometimes Spanish. How did that job interview go? "So, why do you want to work for the post office?" "Nnnaa muuhhh blahhhh gaaaaaaa." "Great! We're happy to offer you the position!" When I was younger and more idealistic, I gave entities like the post office slack because they're underfunded and have an enormous challenge to run the mail in a country this big. Now that I've been in the working world a while, and manage employees myself, I have no patience or pity for the USPS. Awww, no one is sending mail anymore? Well, Mr Postmaster General, come to this location holding a cranky toddler in your arms, wait in line for 45 minutes to send one package, and be waited on by a person who you cannot comprehend and treats you like shit. San Rafael Post Office on D Street, the worst location in Marin. Went in today, no one behind counter at 11:30 am. Six customers waiting in line. No bell to ring. Laughter from back room but no one comes to counter to serve customers for 10 minutes. No forms such as "certified mail", "receipt required", in compartments at tables. Have to wait in line to get forms, then wait again to mail package. If you have a choice, don't go here. Go to Civic Center or Bellam in San Rafael or to the San Anselmo location. read more

Well, if I could have given it zero stars, I would have. This is THE worst post office I've ever been in. Regardless of the line, you have to wait and wait and wait. There is ZERO effort at efficiency; it's as if they're moving in slow motion, making no effort to get the job done and get on to the waiting people. But that's not all of it. They have these extra conversations that shouldn't be happening while people are waiting, personal conversations. I totally appreciate them being thorough and being friendly, but having people wait and wait and wait while you SLOWLY work at your post and have personal conversations is beyond rude! Terrible experience first time came in! The two guys started gossip about another coworker in front of me, one guy actually stop weighing my package and talked to the other one about the third coworker's vacation or sick leave. Unbelievable! I had to stop them by saying can you guys talk later? I need to go. I parked by the meter. Then the guy was servicing me said that I should have parked in the parking lot, so I did nlt have to be in a hurry. It's just a stupid and absolutely rude response, which left me speechless! The people working at the counter are invariably relaxed and friendly while being totally professional and getting the job done. They're efficient and helpful, so generally even if there's a line, it tends to move fairly fast. Their patience sets a good tone. This place is horrible! They are always understaffed and there is always a huge line up no matter what time you go. The staff look less than enthused that they have to even assist customers. The parking outside is 20-min parking, but you need at least 40 mins if you intend on waiting in the line ups and dealing with the staff to mail or ship anything. read more

The postal workers are nice. The other reviewers here are spot on about that line. The time/space continuum is actually altered in that building. When you leave, don't be surprised if you find out some of your friends got married without you, babies were born, people you love have passed into the hereafter, all of the sudden you need a haircut, you've lost your job because you no call / no showed, and a missing person report has been filed on you.
