This post office was successful in delivering a huge headache this week. Yes, indeed.
It's bad enough that I very, very often find myself sorting my neighbors' mail. Why is that in my box? Not to mention how often I write "return to sender" on items that do not belong to anyone who lives in the building at all, just to have them sit in my box for days -- because the carrier refuses to actually pick them up. Or that time my friend sent me a Christmas card from the Main Line, and it took two weeks from her send-date to show up.
No. That's not even what I'm upset about here. It's their new way of sorting packages and their customer service skills. I realize I'm reviewing the post office, yes, but man oh man, I think this specific location takes them to a new low.
For one thing, I didn't even realize this location existed until this week. I live down the street but when I received the notices that my packages were "undeliverable" and thus needed to be picked up at the local office, I walked down to Fairmount Ave. to retrieve them. Nope. Was sent back up to 19th and Poplar -- and for the first time in my many months of living here realized that the brick building over yonder is for mail. Right.
So I walked up and was kinda freaked out when I noticed the bars on the door. Why are they there? Weird. Then I walked inside the stuffy old, oddly dark-for-daytime building and there was an awkward line formed. No one seemed to know where to stand.
One person was working.
I give that a line all to its own because... why. Whyyyyyyyy?????
So when it was my turn to reach the front of the line, I greeted the clerk and pointed out that my slip said that I could pick up my packages that day, and gave him my address. He then disappeared into the back. For ten minutes.
For those ten minutes I stood there, twiddling my thumbs, wondering what the heck was going on. With a long, long line of angry people behind me.
Finally, he popped back out, told me that my packages were nowhere to be found, and asked for tracking numbers. I pulled them off of my phone, he wrote them down, and disappeared into the back again.
At this point, I turned around and apologized to the angry mob behind me -- stating that my slip said that I could pick up my packages today. I then said that this would be a good time for two people to be working. Half-smiled at the people, apologetically.
No one acknowledged a word I said. I don't really blame them.
Finally, after several more minutes, I was feeling incredibly uncomfortable so I rang the little bell they keep on the wall. The guy came back up front and let me know that he still could not find the packages and asked for my phone number so he could have my carrier call me at nighttime with an update. I then walked out -- apologizing to the people behind me again (as if any of it was my fault, but I still felt bad!).
So later at night, my phone remained silent and I became increasingly annoyed. I wanted/needed those darn packages! They were supposed to be in a week ago! So at 9 p.m., I called the post office, thinking maybe they had a voicemail line.
Aaaaaand guess what? Someone picked up. At 9 p.m.
"..Is this the US Post Office?"
"Yes."
"Oh."
I explained who I was and why I was calling. He then (in a groggy voice) told me they had been searching for lost packages for hours. Since I had not received a call, they had not found my packages. He did say, however, that I could expect a phone call update in the morning. I thanked him and told him I really appreciated it.
Morning came. Morning went. Phone again remained silent.
I printed out the tracking slips from the company where I purchased the items and again schlepped (okay, it's like a minute away, but whatever) over to the creepo post office. I briefly explained to the nice lady working that I had been there yesterday. She told me they had a new sorting system they were working through, and went off into the back searching for my packages.
And then a guy walked in holding a package pick-up slip.
I moved away from the window and told him he should ring the bell to have them come to the front to help him. Told him I didn't mind. He replied saying that it was okay since they were looking for my package. He had also been there yesterday hoping to pick up his package and was there again today in hopes again to locate it.
Blink. and. stare.
Happy ending here, though: I have my packages in hand. Finally.
I do wish the post office had followed through on the update calls they said they were going to make. I also wish they would also deliver the mail appropriately sometimes. That'd be great. read more
