Filthy, old building; long lines; high-crime neighborhood; and typical rude, slow, lazy postal employees. But the alternatives are UPS and FedEx, which are far worse in terms of thefts, delays, and prices, at least in my experience. All I can say is - avoid this place if at all possible!!! I always end up waiting in line for like 30 minutes, and customer service is awful. I now try to get packages delivered to spots where I KNOW I can pick them up without having to head to the Post Office! Headed to 3000 Chestnut Street in pouring rain for an 8:00 passport appointment. Only one employee there and overheard her telling a retired employee who was there to pick up a package, that it was actually her day off. I watched the solo employee calmly and politely handle issues at the window, then address the waiting passport customers with an apology. After waiting 15 minutes past our passport registration time, she took my son's photo, processed his paperwork and expedited shipping all in 15 minutes. There are not enough employees like her. I go to this post office twice a week. Some of the staff discriminate against Black People, yet they are all Black themselves. One, example, staff will tell Black People, they can go to the kiosk machine to scan packages. Yet never tell White people to go to the kiosk machine. I was told this several times, when they all know I am not. The Black staff at this post office is telling is Black People to go in back of the bus, as they give White people VIP service. Than they get a ghetto attitude, and walk away from the counter. They try to act nice in a very arrogant manner. Staff use to be professional, it's slowly getting very bad. read more

The number one thing I like about this post office is the late hours. They are open until 9:00pm Monday through Saturday and even open until 6:00pm on Sunday. I have twice needed to urgently mail something and the only time I had available was in evening or on the weekend. Both times the person that helped me was very friendly. The first time I visited, I wanted to buy stamps in addition to mailing my item. The attendant asked me if I was looking for something in particular and I stated that I liked stamps with nature images or animals. She took the time to look through her large binder of stamps and picked out some for me to choose from. On the second visit, I needed my item postmarked by a specific date and she made sure my item was postmarked that day and showed me the date on the item. There was a line both times I visited but it was short and was not a long wait. Of course, both times were definitely not peak business hours. My recommendation would be if you don't want to wait a long time at the post office, come to this location in the evening around 7:00pm. It's also only one block from the 30th Street Station making it very convenient for getting to with public transportation. read more

I wouldn't give any stars if that was an option. This place is terrible. When we opened our box "the lady" wasn't there to actually open it, so they didn't. I couldn't get mail. They had no idea when she would be there and admitted to the fact that our box might not be open for months if she didn't come in. Come to find out all they had to do to officially open the box was to pull a slip out from the inside that said it was closed. So we officially opened our own box. I never get my packages on time, they always claim they aren't there and then mysteriously find them after I pester enough. There is usually only one guy working and anyone else who is there just stares at the line and walks away. We have to plan for a trip there to be at least 45 minutes inside because of how inefficient they are. 0/10 do not recommend. read more

Went into the office to clear something up with a lost package. Pretty quick service, and while I didn't end up leaving with my package or really any information at all, I can tell the workers did want to help me. The main worker on my case was either fired or they quit recently so I didn't have any information on where I could get help. I am still perplexed about how their phone service works-- I heard no phones going off anywhere and there seemed to be no rushing around, so I think they shouldn't advertise a phone number if they aren't going to entertain phone calls at least once a day. read more

For whatever reason this place is always 90 degrees. But what bothers me the most is the line will be backed up all the way to the door and with only one person working. There will be a second girl behind the counter but on "her break". The people who work here typically do not tend to be the nicest either. Although that does not go for everyone. Today must have been my lucky day! Usually, I anticipate post office visits with a sense of dread and indecision. The lingering questions tend to be... Where is the front of the line? Will I make it to work in time? Should I bring a book next time?... ... but not today! The staff was so efficient, that whenever a line materialized, it disappeared almost immediately. They were also very friendly and helpful. It was amazing. This post office is a bit of a hike for me to get to, but as I reflect on my past visits, I've had a pretty solid experience overall so far. Things I mailed out got to their intended destinations. No horror stories stem from this location so far. My fingers are crossed. read more

Hm, I always thought this was open all of the time. Two entries, one from Chestnut, one from Walnut. The passport office and special services aren't, nor is the store, but I don't recall ever being unable to get stamps or mail a letter in the odd hours of the day or night. There are no pens, like Paul said. I believe the sorting center will be closed nearby due to being sold to the University, not sure if this station itself will also get moved. Based on one visit to their Passport Services, I give them high marks. Staff person was very pleasant and efficient in processing the papers. The wait was not terribly long, although since they had only one person on staff, if there had been a high volume of applicants, I could imagine it being a problem. They also take photos if you don't already have your passport photo, they can do it on the spot for what I thought was a reasonable fee (although I believe this is something you can do yourself). The only problem is that the web site listings for their service hours have contradictory info, and it seems impossible to get them to answer the listed number to confirm their hours. Was not a problem finding street parking in the same block. read more

Really the only thing I like about this location is that is has a self serve machine. Otherwise the service is always horrible. When they call about a package from a claim, they're extremely vague with no given name. Then if you try to call back, there is no answer and the line goes dead after a few rings. I went to the post office to talk to them about the package in person. I tried calling them while I was waiting, just to see what would happen. Turns out, they keep the ringers on their phones off. Not to mention, bc of their negligence, I've had to run around to about 5 different places now. I'm told again that it was at the last post office. I've been yanked around all day. There has not been a return to sender. Therefore, due to my package being delivered to the wrong address and there being no package of mine located, that means the package has been stolen. I walked into USPS with a pink slip and immediately the nicest lady helped me find my package, she was delightful! Which was already surprising as I went in knowing I'd be dealing with the typical government employee (aka miserable). And then there It was! The average government employee-- some guy that helped me check out my package was absolutely miserable. I was confused which address he wanted from me and instead of answering me, he tells me in the rudest tone to have a good day and rolls his eyes. read more

Ok, do yourselves a favor, when you have a package to ship do the following: 1) Take the ingredients and put them in the package. 2) Seal the package and write down the "From" and "To" addresses. 3) Take a carpenter's hammer. *Multiple choice from here on: 4a) Place the hammer down or build something after you ship the package. 4b) Smash the fingers on your left hand repetitively while chanting "NEVER AGAIN WILL I WAIT IN LINE FOR 45 MINUTES TO SHIP A DVD THAT I SOLD FOR $0.99!!!" 5a) Enjoy your experience in another USPS branch. 5b) Curse the day USPS was unionized. Conclusions: Please be sure to take a day off, or at least two hours to kill in that place which resembles Dante's eighth circle of hell (Fraud) because you WILL stand in line consisting of at least 12 people, you WILL notice that only two service stations are open and only one employee is actually taking customers while the others is blatantly hitting on one of the patrons of the post office. You also WILL realize after a while that while the employee on the first service station does accept customers, she will not take the packages (small envelopes) from the counter to the scales (less than 3 inch space). You WILL encounter at least 2.5 crying children and at least 1.5 of those children's mother will ignore them like they are silent amoebas or not her children. I can go on and on but I have to run and ship a package. UPS this time. read more

Still the best post office I've been to. The people are always friendly and helpful, and the hours are some of the most convenient and flexible I've ever seen. There is a bit of a line sometimes, but it generally moves reasonably. I've only used the location to ship/drop off packages, but nothing's ever gone wrong. There is always a line longer than the list of lies told by Rush Limbaugh that moves slower than Sarah Palin learning the US constitution. They don't answer the phone, ever. And if you're looking for a missing package, you (or they) will probably never find it. Most of the people working here don't give a shit about their jobs, though I'll admit, some of them can be sweet (extra star for that). That doesn't mean they know anything about the complexities and logistics of the postal system, though. I was having a hard time finding this place since it moved from the 30th and Market location and the new building doesn't have signage if you're headed west. Somehow I have avoided the post office since 2008 when this switch went down. Anyway, I dialed their telephone number and to my surprise the lady that answered offered to come meet me at the corner. She was super nice about it and even led me directly to the passport line so I didn't accidentally wait in the general queue. The guy at the passport station humored my requests for multiple pic attempts because I have a tendency to close my eyes when I smile. $100 later and Korea here I come! I have mixed feelings about this post office. You would think that as one of the largest post offices in the city, as well as being one of the main locations, that you would expect to receive better service. Nope! Think again. Came to mail some packages, letters, and to buy some stamps. Can you believe that they couldn't find a full book of stamps?!!? I asked for a generic forever stamp - the clerk offered me Valentine's stamps. When I asked if there was a flag or something else available, I was offered Hanukkah stamps. When I politely declined them, I was told, "What's wrong with Hanukkah stamps?!? It will get your mail where it needs to go." Yes, but I'm sorry, I am not Jewish and neither are my mail recipients, and I asked for a generic, non-Holiday stamp. Then they wanted to give me Wilt Chamberlain stamps. Eventually I gave up on trying to buy a full book of stamps and bought whatever they had on hand. Could not have been more annoyed. read more

Pathetic. The people here are so incompetent. I had a package that required signature confirmation so was left with one of those salmon slips that say come pick it up the following day after 10 am. Great! So I proceeded to do just that.. except the package wasn't there when I went. They said it's out for delivery again. Ok fine, I can deal with that, but then this happens two more times. So now I've been to the post office 3 times in the last week and I've told them each time that I won't be home to sign the damn package so why can't they just either accept my signature at the post office and leave it at my door, or hold it at the post office?? Scheduled delivery was 3/2, today is 3/8. My package is not at the post office, so it's just sitting in some delivery vehicle and the delivery person will keep trying to deliver it to me when I'm not home... perfect! Absolutely incompetent. It also doesn't help that each time I visit this PO, the line is about half an hour and you're just watching how sluggishly these employees are moving. Makes it that much longer and irritating. Review for Passport services. First attempt was a Wednesday night. My boyfriend arrived to see a massive line at 6:45pm. Online the desk was suppose to close at 7:45pm. Since the line was so long, they had already closed the counter.....what a waste of tokens. Second attempt we arrived around 9am on a Saturday morning. The place was empty and we were able to get our pictures and paperwork filed quickly. We were in and out within 20 minutes. The woman at the desk was very friendly and helped me save some money (she recommended only getting the booklet and not getting the card). I called them about an issue with my mail being returned to me (for my office, that i work at) the person on the phone had an attitude like no other, and all i asked was "who is the manager on duty for the zone of my area code" and she just kept going on an on and asking me stupid ass questions and ultimately in the end she said "i think you need to speak with the manager." really though? i told her "THATS WHAT IVE BEEN TELLING YOU" and she was like IM JUST TRYING TO HELP YOU. hey idiot, dont you think i knew that you couldnt assist me when i called? why dont you do yourself and myself a favor and not waste each others times. anyhow, it ended up being that i had to go into the actual main branch, i go there and the zone 2 manager isn't even there. she was out as a carrier that day. REALLY!? oh btw, that was after waiting in line for about 1 hour because they only have two people working the front taking their good old time. it wasn't a sunday, cmon people chop chop get your job done people, we got places to go and people to see! agh. read more

This post office is huge - like almost a monstrosity. You would think because it's so huge, that they'd have a huge staff to tend to customer needs. This is not the case. If you live in an urban area in Philly, this is usually where your packages are left if you aren't home when they attempt to deliver. It's really annoying, because often there is a USPS closer to where you live, but they still leave it here. If you call their customer service, they will NOT let you speak to anyone, so you end up not getting any of your questions answered. Furthermore, if you schedule a redelivery, they just ignore your request completely, and it never happens. It's absolutely ridiculous. So, I ended up here to collect my package which USPS failed to redeliver. I waited in line, but of course, they told me I had to wait in some other line. Here I waited for a good 10-15 minutes for a slightly grumpy woman to help me, and another 10 minutes for her to find my package. Come on USPS -- make this system more efficient! read more

I write this as much to imprint it on my mind as I do to help others: BRING A PEN. I like this office because of the spacious design - plenty of places to fill out forms (should you have have a *&$@# writing implement). Also: plenty of space when you're standing in line. ... which you will, if you haven't planned otherwise. Beats being in the tiny, dingy 40th Street office. Best part of this PO is the extended hours and, if you get it together and have what you need, the automatic shipping machine. I don't understand why people don't use it more often - maybe they're afraid of the technology? Anyway, the line is usually non-existent, you can pay with a credit card, and you don't have to deal with any government employees. I'll say it again: BYO pen. I seriously wanted to hang myself when I got there and realized I didn't have one and was therefore doomed to have to wait in line to have someone do something I could easily do myself (weigh a package).
