I have to give anyone props who's indulged my wedding mania in these last few months. This office will hand cancel (i.e. not run your mail through an ugly stamp-canceling machine) upon request. This is great for wedding invitations (into which you've poured your heart and soul) and other things that you might want to look pretty upon arrival. The woman at the counter couldn't have been sweeter - I was a bit insecure about this high-maintenance request - she didn't groan or roll her eyes when I made my request, and even showed me a sample of what the hand stamp looked like. read more

The best Post Office in the East Bay! Nice ladies behind the counter, small lines, open late. This is the King of All Post Offices.

This is a out as good as its ever gonna get for a US post office. There's parking, it's open until 8:30pm weeknights, and the staff don't look at you as if your a visitor from Mars if you want to ship something outside the U.S. and don't express amazement that not every country has a 5-digit zipcode (-: ....... Generally very professional. In dozens of visits over 30 years, I only had one negative: After waiting in line for 15 mins a few months, a surly clerk refused to accept my package because "you cannot advertise on packages" -- the (recycled) box I was using had a product name printed on it. I asume this is a USPS policy which is not usually applied or certainly not rigidly as in this case. She refused my request for a marker pen to strike the product name not because she didn't want t to loan me a marker but because she said she still wouldn 't accept even if I did as the print would still be visible. Lord know how such a person can have a fulfilling life with such petty concerns. Meanwhile, I had to drive several miles home and tape dark paper over the product name. Fearing another refusal, I took it to South Berkeley P.O. on Adeline where it was accepted through the bullet-proof plexiglass screen with a warm smile ..... My only other gripe is that while a few other local P.O. s are open on Saturdays, this one is not. It would make life alot easier to maintain ONE P.O. like this one that everyone knows maintains the longest hours instead of having to research the hours of each location. read more

Went here to pick up a package that I missed. I don't understand how it can take a person more than 20 minutes to find a package. And this is happening consistently to every person waiting in line. You would have thought that they have a system in place -- maybe arranging them alphabetically by name or address ?? -- this is a waste of time for everyone and either the clerk or staff managing should be fired for negligence or incompetence (whichever is the case) read more

What I love about this post office - since it's the main one for Oakland-Berkeley it's open later than any other branch around - until 8:30pm, Monday through Friday. This is a godsend when you procrastinate as much as I do, and often have orders to ship out past 5 or 6 o'clock. What I'm not so thrilled about is the location of this post office, because as a woman, I'm always a little uneasy about driving over here. This is not a neighborhood you want to get a flat tire or run out of gas in, not safe at all. Have a full gas tank, healthy tires, a fully charged cell phone in your hand, and keep your doors locked. There are "postal cops" around somewhere, although they seem to be IN the building, not outside, and I do see the occasional police cruiser in the neighborhood, but still, be careful. I don't like that for some reason they no longer have a take-a-number system, nor benches for people to sit in, considering the size of the post office, and how long the lines often are. It's kind of hit or miss though - sometimes I've gone in there and there is no one on line at all, sometimes 5 or 6 people, sometimes 40 people. But the line is more often than not long, and when it is, it moves slowly, despite there being at least two people working, sometimes three. The women clerks are professional, calm, and reasonably pleasant, except one woman who never smiles and is not especially friendly, but as long as she doesn't abuse me like the clerks at Berkeley PO, I'm okay with it. It seems that if they had a pick-a-number system, people could at least sit down, or go back to their cars and make some phone calls, take a nap, or listen to the radio, instead of standing in line for sometimes 30 or 40 minutes. Some of us have hard time standing that long, have knee or back problems, and it would help to be able to at least have a counter to lean against, instead of their current system of people lining up in the center of the room with nothing to even hold onto. Wow, this is a tough one. I've lived 3 blocks from this Post Office for the last 16 years. I have a PO box there because we've had mail stolen etc from our house. A few years ago, the post office started offering a way to have UPS packages shipped to the post office, which is great when you order on line and they say 'we don't deliver to PO boxes." The problem is that the UPS driver delivers the package to this Post Office, and your delivered package gets mixed in with all the OUTGOING mail that they collect at the counter, so it then leaves the Post Office and comes back several days or a week later! I know this happens because one day a year or so ago, I complained that a UPS package that showed as being delivered on line, was not in my box. The person at the counter directed me to a woman who happened to be in the lobby. She told me the story I relate above. OK, I think I can live with that. But it happens every time we have a package delivered. I started thinking about it, the Post Office does one thing. They deliver packages and letters. That's it. So, why can't they figure out a SIMPLE procedure for when UPS drops off a package? It's nuts. I cannot fathom the level of incompetence it takes to screw this up. Don't get me wrong, most of the people who work the counter are fine. Sharon is always nice as are the other two women who person that station. So, where is the problem? Is it the guy with the braids who takes the mail from the counter? Is it the person who signs for the package is just too lazy to do the right thing? Is it that Oakland is just a fucked up place and all of our businesses are getting worse and worse? My wife's new cell phone got delivered on Thursday, it's Monday and it's still not there. read more

Always fast. Always courteous. Very nice station.lines are usually not very long. Very close to BART. Never had any problems here.

Wow. wow. wow. I went there earlier today at around 5pm as I had to send a package to a buyer in the east coast asap. I was in and out of the building within a minute - and smiling! While I did print my shipping label at home, I had the worker scan the bar code for acceptance, no complaints nor attitude! Impressive service from this usps employee. I think her name is Bernadette. She was very helpful and took my package with a smile even without the scan form 5630 (my local PO turns me down each time I ask for a scan even with the form). I don't get that kind of service from my local PO. read more

SHARON who works at the front desk as a customer service representative has the worst attitude and customer skills I have ever been exposed to. This is not a single incident. My girlfriend put in a package for me over two weeks ago and used priority mails and it still hasn't even arrived, the service is slow unpredictable and run by people who don't know their job at best, she even went in to talk to them and all they said was sorry can't help you and the lady from what my girlfriend said barely knew what she was doing, and other workers that over heard the conversation tried making it seem like it was her fault as if she was the one responsible to make sure the package was delivered very very unappealing service go to a different usps don't waste your money or time with this location they will give you no information over the package do yourself a favor and just stay away. And still waiting on the quote on quote package that they can't seem to ship out yet. read more

I've visited this post office a few times and found it to be a very convenient post office with helpful employees. I leanred that it's one of the few post offices open late night (8pm). I had to send something out that would get there quick and it was past the 5pm closing time of most post offices. I drove over to their location near 7:45 pm. I got a little turned around coming off the freeway, so be sure you have proper directions if you head over there and have never been. I get there right about 8pm, park and rush through the doors. Hmmm, where is the postal service counter? Where's the line? Where are all the documents? All I see is a police office behind glass and a bunch of closed turnstiles. The police officer approaches the window and asks if I need help. Apparently in my rush, I stepped into the police area rather than the actual post office. The officer was nice enough to direct me back outside and through to the USPS doors which were only about 100 feet away. Wow, it's now 8:03pm, I'm sure they'll be closed and I really need to get this letter out! I decide to rush in to see if I have any chance at all. As it turns out, the doors were still open and the employees were still assisting people. I head over to the first available employee and she politely asissts me with mailing my document. I was the last customer helped and at 8:05pm they started closing the doors. Really? A government agency that stays open a few minutes late to help the public all without attitude? Sounds too good to be true, but it is. I had a similar scenario during another visit, although I wasn't cutting it as close to closing hour. It was about 7:30pm and there was no line at all at this location. There were about 3 employees who seemed to all politely and efficiently help customers as they came through. I had a few questions for the employee about the best way to send my envelope and she patiently handled all of them. I think her name was Bernadette. Once again, no attitude, helpful and friendly service, and no lines to boot. To top it off it's very close to the West Oakland BART station. If you go to the post office via BART, just walk out to 7th street from the station, turn left and you'll be at the post office in about 7 minutes. Since all BART trains between SF and the East Bay travel through West Oakland BART, you'll be back on a train within no time. Oh and this is also one of the post offices that stays open late to receive tax returns on the night of April 15th. To assist on Tax Day, they have employees out front to receive your packages as you drive up. This is a great post office location. read more

Cannot say enough bad things about this place for passports applications. Wife and I both left work early and got our three kids out of day care/school to get our applications in. Arrived at 3:00 (an hour before closing) and were promptly told that the woman who processes the applications wasn't letting anyone else get in line. Worst example of government bureaucracy I've seen in a while. God help us if the state takes over healthcare. read more

Just left Passport services, lady behind the counter was extremely rude. At 4:15pm she yelled she was no longer accepting applications, I made three attempts to ask what's the cutoff time so I'll know for my next visit, She continuously yelled over me to let me know she's not interested in my question or concern as a customer, she was obviously in a really bad mood. Two customers whispered to me that the cutoff time is 4pm but the lady cut it off at 2:30pm, it's a shame the customers felt they needed to whisper around this employee she's obviously displaying a bad attitude with everyone. I will never recommend that location for passport services, I will make another visit to speak to a manager so hopefully no one will have the same experience. read more

did you ever wonder how simple $h*t can be so difficult for some?? wonder no more, as the USPS can screw up even the simplest task. Scan the tracking number, oh good there's an address, deliver....and here's the curve ball.... TO THAT address. Nope. Hmmmm, maybe we'll toss it back into the USPS black hole of nowhere, even though the flippin' package has a clearly indicated name, address and zip code. What scan?? Oh, a tracking number??, don't make me laugh. Expected delivery date....that's just a ballpark estimation of when you MIGHT get your delivery. Odds are better at winning the powerball without buying a ticket. Ok, I get it, it's probably not the error of the post office that receives the package in error, but hey, do you think some sorter with his headphones on and one sleep deprived eye open would re-direct it??? See above reference to powerball. Maybe tomorrow they say. Maybe. Maybe means go home again at mail delivery time - which again is a crapshoot since the delivery can be at 12:30, 2:24, or 4:00. Check the mail, all bills, no package. How come they can deliver those damn bills like the speed of light, but when it's a tracked (yuk yuk) package it gets lost in the deep bowels of some dark, scary post office with Homer Simpson as the sorter? read more

usps is only good for mailing letters anything else is a complete gamble. i mailed 20 boxes to myself when moving to Texas, and there lost 5 of the boxes! you cannot track the packages accurately, their sorting facility in Iowas is crap, and apparently the location of most of my missed packages. i have gotten 2 labels with out the boxes, and now they want me to give detailed descriptions of what i had in the boxes to see if they have it laying around!!!!! i suggest they stick to what they know best, and thats only letter. on and their customer service is a joke read more

Returning to Oakland recently I was shocked to discover that all the city's post offices but this one (and the Emeryville post office nearby) have a (bulletproof?) glass partition between the clerks and the public. ("Because people are so friendly in Oakland" the clerk told me his superior explained during orientation.) Such a barrier must make for an unpleasant work environment for clerks--and it doesn't do much for the customer. (Packages must be passed through a plexi-glass "revolving door" like affair to be processed and mailed.) In addition to being open late, with small lines, fast clerks, & a parking lot, the absence of the glass partition makes this post office much more pleasant to visit than all others in Oakland. read more

I like this post office. This post office really is "as good as it gets." It's only open M - F and the service counters open from 8:30am - 8:30pm. I have been here at different hours of the day, even during December, and my wait has never been more than 10 minutes. There are 3 regular ladies working behind the counters and they are all efficient. Plus, there are always plenty of parking and it's walking distance to the W. Oakland Bart Station. read more

My packages always arrived sooner when they were mailed from this PO location. I used to drive a couple miles further just because the agents were so efficient and they were open until 8:30pm! Unfortunately I had to drop a star because I just discovered they are no longer open until 8:30pm so I can no longer get to this location in time. Bummer! This was so convenient and so customer-oriented... Guess I'll have to make do with the PO near my home on 41st St where most of the agents deliberately work at quarter speed just to piss off the people 30 deep in line. Pathetic. read more

On several occasions there was no mail delivery to my home. I know this because I placed outgoing mail in the box with the flag up. Monday and Tuesday, July 11 & 12, 2016 - No mail delivery. I have called the post office and lodged complaints about poor service with no feedback. I have used this post office for more than 40 years. I have never had a bad experience and have never felt I was in "creepytown" or in a "sketchy" part of a neighborhood. Its located in a historic and culturally rich neighborhood. The people who live in it are probably more insightful than those reviewers choosing to write. I've also used the outside boxes between 8 and 8:30 pm and on the occasions I've run into the postal staffer emptying the boxes, I've seen him/her wait for patrons to drive thru before leaving so all the mail can get collected. I have no plans to stop using this location. I would be more leery (yes, i know how i spelled leery) of using a san francisco location, especially if its not in downtown. If you visit this location, like many reviewers have said, you'll be just fine. Peace. read more

Sent an Easter card ( yellow in color) to my daughter. It contained 100 dollars in cash and a rent support check inside. A few days later, I received a "Loose in the Mail envelope" from U.S.P.S., sent from 1675 7th. st. Oakland Ca. office. The letter stated "the article was inadvertently dropped or became loose in handling within the postal system". The article was the un cashed check that was supposed to end up at my daughters residence. The resealed envelope made to my daughters residence without the cash. A large piece of tape was used to reseal the envelope. I have tried to contact the (Loose in the Mail Div.) numerous times for several days at 510-874-8636. No answer and no opportunity to leave a message. I can only assume that someone opened the card,stole the cash, taped it, and sent it along. The check dropped to the floor and an honest person found it later and sent it via the ,Loose in the Mail, envelope. My address on the check allowed this. Lesson here is to not send holiday colored cards via the mail system. It creates an opportunity for dishonest employees to steal. Use regular envelopes. read more
