What you need to know: - Latest time you can drop off letters to be stamped with today's postmark: 8pm at the inside letter drop box. (Yes, park your car and drag your butt inside. Don't use the outside drop box.) - Latest time you can run over to this branch and get a live human to attend to your postal needs: 8:30pm - Don't bother coming here on the weekends. They're closed. - Mailing out a letter at this location will all but ensure that one day is cut from your letter's time-in-transit. Why? Because this is the USPS's main sorting and processing facility for the area. - Neighborhood is sketch, or as Realtors would describe it: "Up and Coming!" So...use good judgment around here. - If you miss either of these deadlines, you're going to have to see if the Post Office at San Francisco Int'l Airport (SFO) is still open. Last time I checked, they were open till midnight on weekdays and extended hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Not much else to say. It functions as a Post Office should. I brought our save the date cards here to have this done, but the woman up front indicated that they did this but it had to be done "in back". So she wraps my stack to be hand canceled with a note saying "HAND CANCEL" on it...I should have known better. Sure enough they all arrived after being run through a machine. They look terrible. Oh my God this post office is amazing. The only time I've even heard someone behind the counter say anything rude was yesterday. Ironically she wasn't talking to a customer, rather to a co-worker and the gist of it paraphrasing was "Really? That's as fast as you can work? There are customers waiting." Even that was said rather nicely. I've used this post office 12 times in the last 9 weeks. I've seen them deal with a cart full of caged cocks that were squawking at the top of their lungs. I've seen them deal with a mentally ill customer in pajamas. I've seen a lot at this post office that I've never seen before. Do these people have an actual phone number?? Package tracking number on a priority post shows as being stuck at this facility for 2 days now. I called the 1800 line and was told it would be a 15 minute wait. 45 minutes later a woman comes on and gives me a story about how the systemwide USPS computers were down and my package is 'probably' well on it's way but the tracking is showing it as stopped at this facility. Then I asked her for the number to this facility and she looks up something for me, which when I tried it, s disconnected, as is the other number listed for them in the yellow pages. How can a person run a reliable business if the packages they're count on to be delivered with tracking don't have any real accountability and there's no way to find out what happened to them? I used to be a huge fan...after all, they're always open and it's easy to get in-and-out. UNLESS, that is, you want a passport. The dedicated passport window was closed years ago, I guess. Nowadays, you're directed (by signs and the security guard) to get in line and wait. When you get to the window, one of two things will happen. Option 1: there's a short line behind you and the person you get is in a good mood. You'll be helped. It's quick and friendly (even if they don't know that the passport application form was updated 2 years ago from the one they use). Option 2: there isn't a short line behind you, OR the person you get isn't in a good mood. You will be informed that an appointment is REQUIRED in order to process passport applications. And that you can't do it on Mondays, ever. If you point out that you've just waited 10 minutes and there's nothing on any sign about appointments, you'll get told that "it's on the website" and the tone may shift from unhelpful to downright hostile. It's really the hostility I object to, because I've had BOTH experiences here: the woman who smilingly helps, and the woman who clearly doesn't want to be bothered with actual work and invokes a rule when it suits her. [BTW, it turns out that with some work, you CAN find the small print, under the asterisks, on the buried government webpage that says appointments are needed. Of course, it also says they DO process passports on Mondays, so go figure.] read more

I use only this location for everything because it's the best. I have lived in many different cities in this country, but this is the best Post Office I have ever been to. Postal workers at the counter know what they are doing and they are kind and thoughtful. Post Offices vary in quality. Some post offices have unbelievably mean people. I've been there, done that. I don't need more stress added to my hard life. So I use only this Post Office because I don't need bullshit that I get from some of other Post Office. What people don't know is that this location is actually a mail processing center. I have a PO Box here, and mail to me get delivered first thing in the morning before delivery people are dispatched. They are open longer hours than most offices, and PO Box is open 24 hours. It comes in handy when I am desperately waiting for a certain mail and when I can go get the mail only at an odd hour. read more

I can't rate it on history, I can only say they usually the line is short, and the parking lot unchallenging. Also, I've put mail into there at 8:00pm, and it was in L.A. the next moring. This is my experience at the West Oakland USPS distribution center on 7th street in Oakland: - 5 stars for location, parking, and open late hours until 8:30pm (sharp!) Mon-Fri - 5 stars for mailing/delivering first class mail in a timely manner - 3 stars for the inconsistent service at the main desk from USPS staff (some staff are great and some can't be bothered...sad) - 0 stars for priority mailing service (I paid approx. $35 for next-day delivery from Oakland to Clayton, CA) and it took 5 working days - I used the tracking number to watch the envelope travel all over the Bay Area (San Pablo, Fremont, San Jose, finally Clayton). In summary, if you have a stamped envelope and you need timely delivery and you can get there before 8:30pm, this is your go-to spot. It's worth the effort. A final note - no mail/package delivery service has the distribution network of the USPS. It is an institution that delivers everywhere in the U.S. and deserves our support. read more

Very annoyed. One day later, after dropping it off, calling the 1-800 USPS number to verify that this location, 7th street, indeed "hand canceled" mail, I got my invitation in the mail. Only it had been run through the machine. Not hand-canceled. There's no excuse. I was the only person IN the entire post office. I placed them into a box, an had them tied with a piece of paper that said "hand cancel ONLY please." Will be calling manager, and head postmaster. i use the drop off boxes here sometimes, no problem. i remember working as xmas casual here years ago soon after they opened. the first year, i was paid overtime after 40 hrs. which amounted to megabucks! when sorting packages, i learned upon finding a package with broken things inside. i should write "rattle ok" and send it on it's way. working on the docks was hard work. dropping mail bags down a hole. some people tried to throw many bags at once into the shute, trying to jam it and causing a slowdown, thus creating a break. inevitably, i found empty bottles of vodka and o.j. in the emptied trucks. i put 2 and 2 together and had a great time working the docks. durihg a break, me and a bud had a few tokes on a smoke. upon returning, the sup says, " you smell good, but as long as you can do the work, it's cool".. the 2nd year, overtime was eliminated, hours truncated. the fun was over. read more

I dread the Post Office during the holidays, which is unfortunately one of the few times a year I need to use it. But, with only 16 days until Christmas, we walked RIGHT UP to the counter here. No jockeying for position in line, no frazzled staff, nothing but pleasantries and friendly staff getting my family's presents off to their respective corners of the country. And the building itself is fun to behold. Neat old PO boxes and cavernous hallways... We guessed it was built in the 40s and "updated" in the 70s (I know zip about architecture, though, so don't hold me to it). The experience was so uncommonly good that J thought I should refrain from reviewing, keep it a best-kept O-town secret. I love that this post office is open later than every other post office, so if you really need something postmarked the same day and it's after five, you have until 8:30 pm over here. And a lot of people of all backgrounds come here, so it's all good. One night I came here and they had the radio on to KBLX I believe. I love me some old school jams even if I wasn't born in that era, so that was much appreciated (it was George Michael, by the way if you were curious). Minus one star for the size of the parking lot (it's really small), and for the fact that I always have to make a U-turn to get here because there are pillar's or whatever in the way, but I guess they can't be at fault for every piece of infrastructure. Thanks for being the only USPS open past 5 PM...but be prepared to deal with the lines due to all the other people who can't come until after 5 PM too. Week before Christmas, expect to wait up to 30 min in line! iPhone games come in real handy here... ;) And the staff was still nice despite probably being super tired and still having to deal with the holiday mail season. A bit hard to find at first as my GPS took me into the police station first...and then the first USPS parking lot was full and I slightly panicked until I found the second parking lot just further down. I love this post office. I ahev never had an issue here. But I also do go ate in the evening. The staff has always been very friednly. The building is huge. I really liek that they stay open until 8:30 every night so I can go after work. I have not gone to this post office duringt he holidays soI can;t really speak on that. They have a pretty good selections of cards and cute shipping boxes and padded envolpes if you need to put a gift together last mintue. But note they wil not give you tape you must buy it. They have two parking lots and also a place that you can drive through and just drop ooff your package. I recommend this post office! read more

I couldn't call for an appointment because the phone line is not even working! How are we supposed to make an appointment where it is "required" if the phone service does not work?! So, I walked into the regular postal service area to ask for an appointment. The man took out a very messy clipboard with handwritten appointment dates/slots scribbled on and found me a spot two days away (even though most dates looked like they only had one or just a few appointment slots taken!?). In passing, he said I should try UC Berkeley's Rec Center because they take walk-ins (or walk-ins only?)!!! So, guess what?! I drove over to Cal and at 10:00am, it only had two people ahead of me in line and took just 2 minutes to submit the paperwork & pay and I was DONE!!! This is the main post office for the east bay. I come here pretty regularly and I have to say this has been one of the best post offices around. For starters they are open from 8:30am until 6pm M-F. Most of the post offices in the area close around 4pm making them useless to those of us that work business hours. Second this place never has a line, and if they do it moves uber fast, I've never spent more than 10mins waiting to send a package. Also the workers are pretty helpful, the lady behind the counter allowed me to use box tape for free the other night, I know it seems like a insignificant item but the other location I went to made me purchase a roll. Anyway if you do come here make sure your bring an ink-pen, apparently pens are in high demand and there are none available in the lobby area. I always have to borrow one from one of the people behind the counter and get harassed about bringing it right back. All in all though it's a good place to send your mail. read more

It was 6:45 at night, my grandmother's 101st birthday was tomorrow and I realized her carefully chosen bday card, the one I spend 20 minutes picking out, was languishing in my cavernous new bag. I had completely forgotten to go to the post office in time! Aaggghhhh! Hopeless situation worthy of despair? Heartless wench of a granddaughter am I? The clerk Carolyn got through them in about 10 minutes each. She was very competent and extremely helpful. She explained every step in the process, which was quite complex. As sketchy as this location is and I literally roll here on bicycle after 7p when all natural light has disappeared and it's Creepytown, USA, their pro-activeness help get me in and out and back on BART in record time. The happiest, friendliest, most helpful workers are here. They seem to treat each other like family and know how to speed things along, anticipating customer needs while we're waiting on line to keep desk talk efficient, and all with a smile. ****VIDEOS AND PICTURES AT THE END**** ************************************** on 4/29/22 the mail carrier lady was sitting on the bottom of the staircase, blocking the residents from coming and going. when I asked her what was going on, and why is she standing there camped out, she complained of her leg being painful but when I offered her to sit down on the other side of the stairs, or to get a chair for her, she said no. she smelled like she was drinking alcohol and her eyes were red. I asked her if she needed an ambulance, and she declined that too. I told her she should go to her truck and she said it was around the corner. as I left I noticed she never sat down at all, and she continued to stand in the walkways of the front of the premises where residents have to get mail, take out trash, and do whatever they have to do. her reason for remaining on the premises for over 55 minutes was questionable as she looked fine. at one point she started crying but there were no tears. then she started to get loud and she started to argue at me when I was trying to help her. she needs recovery and treatment for alcohol and narcotics too in my opinion. (the way I know how long she was on the premises is I have Ring video device so I went back and saw she was there for over 50 minutes. In that video when she first enter the sidewalk gate she looked like she was licking the gate and she was having trouble standing, like she was intoxicated on alcohol or a narcotic. she looked disoriented and inebriated. at that point she came to the stairs and sat there for over 50 minutes) recap: she sat on our porch for over 50 minutes. It doesnt take that long to rest your legs as she said they were hurting. I believe she was drunk on alcohol and a narcotic. They close at 6 now. the postal service needs to learn how to compete better. For example: 1. If you want guaranteed overnight mail it is most likely to fail even though they use the same planes as FeDex. 2. If you send overnight mail to a building Fedex delivers to the designated room. USPS goes to the mail room. 3. I do not understand why there are no 24/7 postal facilities. 4. I do not understand why there is a lack of automation. 5. I do not understand why they are not open later on Saturday and not on Sunday. No wonder Staples had a contract with them. When USPS employees protested the consumer lost. Was told to call this number by USPS. Called several times the first day and no response. Realized the voice message you receive is different when the phone is in use than when it is not picked up - meaning no one was picking up the phone all day. I left a couple voicemail messages, leaving my name, phone number, and situation. Got no call back. Called back again the next day and after calling all day (it was a very time sensitive situation) a very agitated lady picked up the phone. Did not hear out my issue, did the very bare bones minimum to look into it (ie. checked my tracking number) and then told me USPS lied to me and they are wrong. I then asked about the lost package warehouse, and if I could call them to see if they had the package. At least then I could narrow down where my package could be. She told me they had no phone. Literally, they physically did not have a single phone in the entire warehouse. Exasperated, I asked to speak with her supervisor. She said she was out, but would patch me in to her voicemail.. I asked for the Supervisors number, but was told I could not have it. I left a voice mail and have yet to receive a call back. Later today, USPS gives me the phone number to the lost package warehouse. The phone number that the lady told me didn't exist. The USPS rep and her supervisor could not believe the treatment I got from the lady at this office and neither could I. The absolute worst service I have ever experienced. nope nope nope! never again! my boyfriend and i bought a computer together at the beginning of JANUARY. i sent it to him the next day and we thought everything was fine..... there wasn't an update on the package's status for a good two weeks on USPS.com. we thought we'd wait it out since there was a bad winter storm where he is in the east coast. nope. nothing. at the end of january, i visited this USPS office since the latest update was that it left this sorting facility. the lady seemed really annoyed, and said she can't do anything regarding my package and that it's definitely GONE. i asked if she can check their warehouse JUST IN CASE it was still in oakland. she said no. bad customer service! she definitely didn't care about my package and she didn't even try to help! read more

What a wonderful surprise in my own backyard! I needed to get my mom's birthday gift in the mail and it was after 5:00 p.m................naturally, I looked to YELP for HELP and it didn't disappoint. Sure enough, this post office is open until 8:30 p.m. The main entrance is closed, so don't park in the lot where the drop boxes are (closer to BART)...instead park in the lot at the West End of the center. You can also drop mail that already has postage on it in the drop boxes in the "drive thru" and there's even a FEDEX drop box here that picks up at 5:00 p.m. The line was about 10 people deep when I arrived at 6:00 p.m., but the three clerks were efficient and I was out of there within 10 minutes. So much better than the USPS offices I used to visit in San Francisco! Just want to address the other reviewer on her concerns of driving in the neighborhood. This office is on 7th Street just off the 880 Frontage Road...so getting here couldn't be easier...and if you do have concerns about the neighborhood, you shouldn't even have to drive through it if you don't want to. But I live here and "not safe at all" is simply not true. Just be smart and take the same precautions you would anywhere else at night. read more
