I don't know why so many people don't like this Post Office! I have only been here about 3 or 4 times but I haven't had a problem. The staff is friendly especially that guy on the end and yes, I have had to stand in line but I wouldn't say it was slow, I say they take time to make sure that every customer gets great service! I say if you are in a hurry you get there early! This is one of my favorites and they aren't behind glass which to me makes it more welcoming! If I lived in the area I would be back more! read more

Awaiting for delivery scan for over 3 weeks, filed a claim, workers not helpful when I called on their impossible to find phone number that isn't the generic cooperate hotline. I couldn't even understand what they were trying to say because they were 40 feet away from the telephone. read more

I think that the building is awesome. Like everyone else on yelp.....I think that finding street parking in Oak Park is not something you should take lightly around here. I have never had too many long waits at the post office in Oak Park, and the people have always been helpful who serviced me. The building/check writing stations and counters seem cleaner then I would expect them to be. I won't rate the post office down a few stars for its parking because ....if you live in Oak Park you probably already know that parking stinks here. It's not just by the post office, its everywhere in Oak Park. read more

I have to agree with one of the other posters that Orlando is the ONLY employee at this location who has a functioning brain and is actually worth dealing with. There is one old African American male clerk who is by far the slowest, dumbest, and rudest individual I have ever encountered anywhere in the United States who deals with the public. I always pray I don't get him - I will purposely switch places with someone behind me just to AVOID this old fool. No matter if there are 30 people in line or 1, he can only handle 2 people to Orlando's 10! He is barely alive he is so slow. One pace, and the most miserable facial expressions. He slows the entire process down. He is a perfect example of a typical, lazy, ignorant. Civil Service employee! It's no wonder the Post Office is losing millions - with people like this old fool serving the public I'm surprised they've lasted this long. read more

I have gone there and felt very sorry for the people working b/c they are clearly very understaffed. However, I have also seen them perform super slowly and several of them have poor manners. I had a Change of Address done for May 20th. I still have not gotten any mail at all. They did not follow through and today kept me on hold for 5 minutes, just to tell me to call another place. I think a big part of the problem is the lack of funding for appropriate staffing. However, if they chose to work there in those conditions they need to keep a smile on their faces and get the job done. Where is my mail!!!!!! read more

I wish there was a way I could give them half a star- I came to the post office to get a passport renewal. I was disappointed with the service. They were very, very slow but nice. I made an appointment but had no idea where to go. There's no signage, instructions or anyone to help. Chances are, if you go you won't know where to go and be stuck in the wrong line which I saw happen on more than one occasion the 2 HOURS I was there. read more

The front staff def seems like they are overworked. I find them to be fine...oppose to what the other reviewers say. They usually have 2 ppl working the front counter. The back office staff did help me a bunch when I needed to retract a package that was just dropped off. They found it and was able to give it back to me! Very pleased! read more

The one Star is for Orlando. ALl those others can suck it. The old African American guy is such a cranky miserable old man. The women all have attitudes are rude, and condescending. All except Orlando (who frequently sings, humms, smiles) complain in front of the customers about how their jobs suck. WTH? he post office is already a miserable place where people go only when they absolutlely have to...they all just makes it worst. They are cranky and unorganized and if a person makes a mistakes or ask a question they do their best to try to make them feel stupid about it. The thing with these government jobs is that you literally have to choke a customer to get fired. They really suck. I just wish they gave these jobs to people (like Orlando) who seem to reall y appreciate being there. read more

They truly just don't give a damn. Twice I've gone out of town and filled out the hold mail form online. The form works just fine and I get my confirmation emails before and after the hold. I selected "Carrier delivers mail at end of hold". The first time I came back I had to go down there and ask where it was after two days. This time it has been three days since my hold expired and I still don't have my held mail. I'm getting junk mail again, but nothing from the 9 days I was gone. I just called them and they tell me the carrier has gone home for the day and my mail is nowhere to be found in the building. They truly don't care where my mail is, they really don't. Sure wish I could have a job where I stayed employed no matter how much I didn't care. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with my experience at this post office yesterday. I highly recommend making an appointment if you are getting a passport. I walked right up in front of the line. The two ladies that were there were very friendly and had great customer service skills. There were people complaining about the line but one of the workers explained that everyone in line would get helped. I was in and out. read more

The lines at peak times (Saturdays and after work) can be insane. Don't accidentally get caught in the passport line! Use the self serve shipping station at the opposite end of the regular counter to send priority mail and buy stamps. The employees are not that happy with their jobs here but what can you do? Even if you never have to buy stamps or mail a package just go and check out the interior. It's fabulous! read more

This is another historic post office building. As with all government service, you will find folks working who are, well, less than motivated. Perhaps there is something for an economist or an efficiency expert to look into as a possible explanation of why the post office continues to lose money year after year... But I digress. Yes, I have waited in line and found absolutely no help at the end of that line. But I have also found very helpful clerks who were actually trying to move the line along, too. This is very much like going to the Secretary of State's Office, the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court (although I've yet to find the helpful clerk at that office after 15 years), or the office of the recently dead from Beetlejuice (it is a movie if you don't get the very strained reference). You might hit the jackpot and be out in 2 minutes or you might get the clerk who wants you to suffer as long as he or she has to, too. By the way, Elizabeth A., did your package EVER arrive? At least one inquiring mind wants to know! read more

Totally incompetent. Worst post office I've ever had to deal with. I've had my mail put on a vacation hold twice and they've managed to screw it up both times. The most recently time I was supposed to pick it up at the post office, but my mailbox was jammed with mail when I got back. I went there anyway and there was another pile of mail on hold. As others have mentioned, there are ridiculously long lines. Also, there's no way to bypass the line to get packages and such. So, you have to slog through that just to get sent to the door the next section over. How about a bell at that window, eh? The building is really cool but the post office service is atrocious. read more

The staff is so rude. I was there on May 12 around 1pm. The women was not kind and seemed very mad. I will not return to this post office if I can. I will avoid at all costs because she basically told me they wouldn't give me what I needed here. So I told her I would find another post office who would. All I needed was a clear sticky slip to put my label in. She contradicted herself because the last few times I was here they told me I HAD to use that type of label. So confusing. I can't believe we pay for this kind of service. read more

Took my family here to get their passports, including my 2 little girls. The woman helping us was nice but man oh man the other women in there were very rude. I ended up getting scolded by one of them in front of my kids. Why do we just have to accept that a visit to our post office will be met with rude workers that are miserable? We need to change that. read more

Beautiful building, but that's where it ends. I have had more problems w/service here than any other PO ever. 2 vacation mail holds and mail was delivered, being squished into an apt mailbox resulting in torn magazines, bills and cards. Mail held when it was not supposed to be (??) A large package left on the floor of my building lobby that was lost/stolen, that should never have been left. An undelivered package they claimed to have never received was found sitting on the floor in the back of the PO 2 weeks later. And when I filed complaints about these issues 4 separate times, I never received a single call back. When I complained at the front desk, I received a blank stare and a meek apology from the supervisor! Worst service imaginable! read more

Everytime I come in to this post office the clerks are always arguing with a customer. They're always loud, confrontational and ultra defensive. I hate that they just can't fire these people because it's a federal job. Great location though and the post office has a great old times feel to it. The post office staff in this location is a sour point and place in a great FRIENDLY and small business community. I'm surprised no action has been taken by the regional director, manager, post master whatever his official title is. To relieve the staff in place now and replace it with a competent, customer service, friendlier staff. read more

worst post office on earth. the elderly man who is in charge is passive-aggressive, lazy, on a permanent work slow-down and sets the tone for the rest of the crew. oh, and he absolutely hates anyone who is not black. includes middle easterners, white, people who look jewish, asians, you name it. i would never ever deal with them but they are my home post office. and i will pay any amount of money to have any packages sent by other means. they spend most of their time acting as federal agents, refusing to give people their mail if they don't have id or if they are visiting and don't have a permanent address. they "informed" my credit card company that i was "address unknown" and my credit card was cancelled. (later reinstated but still . . .)they have randomly changed my mailing address and started delivering all my mail to an address which is on a new alley/street behind me. everyone around here has horror stories of how they can't bother to deliver the mail but they are constantly hounding people and reporting them to whoever you do business with including your magazine deliveries! this is what happens when the government uses the post office as national security. the river forest post office is fantastic, btw. read more

I used to love this location because the workers were nice and friendly and you could always count on getting good service here, no matter whom you encountered. That is not so much the case these days. One of the original people are still here and he is still as friendly as he used to be. But everyone else is new and they don't have the best attitudes with customers, and it doesn't matter what time of day it is. I have personally been here during all times, from when they first open to later in the day, and the attitude is still the same. The good thing is that for me it is rare that I have to deal with the workers here. I am usually just getting my mail and leaving. read more

Having your mail held while on vacation= the worst idea ever. I would rather have every envelope stuffed into my tiny little mailbox and have it all torn up and unreadable before I EVER do that again. When I went to pick up my mail, I was told I would have to wait until my carrier was back. Why? Because they didn't know where my mail was. After seeing my carrier on my way home, I stopped him and asked if he had it in his possession and he says "Oh no... tell _____ (insert supervisor's name here) it's in a box under my desk." IN A BOX UNDER YOUR DESK!??! Is that really protocol for how 'held mail' is taken care of???!!! The one star is for the building's gorgeous architecture. If all you have to do here is use the self-serve station, or drop packages/letters off directly into the box, then by all means use this post office. If you have to do ANYTHING that involves interaction with one of the employees at this location, go elsewhere. For instance, the North Riverside location is really great, and the employees are helpful and friendly. We made the mistake of going to the Oak Park location to try and obtain passport services for our minor children. It was on a Saturday, the only time we could take them, and we got there at 10:30 a.m., an hour and a half before the passport services closed. We were still in line at 12:00, along with about half a dozen other people. The elderly african-american man who was providing the passport services was painfully slow, and impossible to deal with. If you have questions, forget it. If you ask him to get his manager so that you can ask her questions, she is also remarkably unhelpful, and I suspect a little bit malicious. The long and short of it was that after waiting in line for over two hours, we were unable to get our kids' passport applications processed, and had to come back the next weekend to do it all over again. HOWEVER, when we returned the next weekend, there was a sign on the window saying that the passport services were closed for the day, and that we should go to the Berwyn post office. We got to the Berwyn post office to receive essentially the same treatment. There were about four families ahead of us in line for passport services, and the Berwyn post office employees were absolutely furious that Oak Park had sent us over without giving them a heads up. Naturally, they took out their anger on those of us in line, and we ended up going to North Riverside, where we got service in under half an hour. read more

The absolute worst post office I have ever experienced. Anywhere in the world. I've been to post offices in more than 20 countries. NONE have been this rude and inefficient. Not only is the service at the retail counter awful, but the last 3 packages shipped to me were not delivered. A slip was left on my door and I completed it asking for re delivery. I authorized them to leave it at the door after confirming a signature was not required. In all 3 cases the pig was not delivered one week later. I called the post office and was told it was still at the po available for pick up. No explanation at all for why it wasn't delivered. To go into the office and endure those rude, unhappy employees is unbearable. I even refused to pick up a package there. I would rather it go back to the sender than go there. read more

In general, I dislike going to the post office, probably because I almost never have a positive experience. This one is no exception. The building is really cool, and I want to like going there. However, there is NO good parking unless you luck out and get a street spot. To add insult, the line is incredibly slow. Most of the staff could really care less about customer service. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time if you use this location. read more

The passport line at the OP Post Office will test every ounce of patience that you may or may not have. In order to apply for or renew a child's passport, they and you have to be there in person. There is no way that you can make the weekday hours if you have school aged children therefore you are forced to try on a Saturday. Myself and my two children arrived at 9:15 am and did not make it up to the counter until 11:40, and we walked out or the door at 12:15. Keep in mind that we were only the 7th or 8th family in line. There are no chairs so come prepared to sit on the floor and to have your children whine endlessly asking 'how much longer is this going to take.' Bring s bag chair, snacks, activities, electronics, and candy for bribery! On a side note, when our turn was up Ms. Lorraine was very kind, detailed, and she provided excellent customer service. If you go to the OP PO for children's passports on a Saturday, get there @ 8:15am and be in the line before the passport window opens at 9. Maybe you'll be out by 10:30. And to think, the passports are only good for 5 years . read more

Customer service..... Rude all the time. I've called 3 different times in the past 7 months and they always seem to be irritated. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE EVER. ANYWHERE. Went to post a letter overseas on June 22, 2019. I was #13 in line on arrival, and it took 35 minutes to get to the single clerk. Only two clerks working. The other clerk handling passports had many people waiting, too, and there were problems with missed appointments The issue is not the front-line employees, though they could show a little more hustle. The problem is POOR MANAGEMENT. President Trump, make the Post Office great again, starting at 901 Lake Street, Oak Park!! read more

.....continued.... Joe walked away to pick up a call while I was speaking to him. Later, he said to me, "HOLD ON" and walked to the back. He left my son and I waiting in limbo for OVER 15 MINUTES....JUST WAITING...without a clue when or if he'd be returning or what he went to do. One thing I've learned from being in customer service for over 30 years is that it is not polite, in fact it is extremely rude to leave a customer waiting (in person or on the phone) without giving them an update. When he returned he said, "yes, can I help you?" as if he'd never seen me before. Who knows how much longer he would've made me and my 10 year-old son wait except that after 15 minutes of waiting, I asked a young lady working over in the next counter if she had any idea where Joe had gone or what he was doing. Of course, I apologized to her for interrupting her just before she took the next customer. I also thanked her for going to look for Joe although she ignored me. I didn't let this bother me though! --------conversation continued like this---- We never got keys to the mailbox, said. Joe says, "it's not the post office's problem". I said, "well, I have to get the Oak Park Post Office's custodian to unlock the box so that a locksmith can remove the lock and make new keys, right? "yes", he says. I said, "your custodian is out of town until Aug. 17 and no one is covering for him". "yes", he says. I say, "you cancelled my mail hold (because he miraculously found the missing card I'd filled out) and you are denying me to re-start it?... "yes", he says. So, I say...." and you are the supervisor....so what should I do?"..... he says, "the custodian returns on the 17th" ............ I was extremely upset, almost an hour had gone by, I had other kids to pick up, and this man was of no help! I asked for his name....he said, "Joe" but I read "Joseph" on his ID. I couldn't catch the last name so I requested it...... there were a whole lot of people in the post office so I think he had no choice but to give it to me.....Joseph Thurman. I also asked for his supervisor's name and I let him know that no customer should be left in limbo without an explanation or an expectation of how long the wait time might be. I advised him that I'd be reporting him to his supervisor although I have the feeling it will make no difference!!! Horrible, horrible, horrible experience for me. Unfortunately, my son was there watching and listening to the whole thing. I left at 4:28p and had arrived there at 3:36p--- Joe never, not once apologized to me for his behavior or for making me wait so long. Neither did the previous lady who also walked away from me while I was talking and then just told Joe to "please handle this customer"! And when a female customer who was not there before to see/hear the whole thing, made a racial stereotype remark about me along with other things that she shared with the young lady who had previously gotten Joe for me.....the young lady agreed and joined in the making fun of me, my son and the situation I was in. We were only 3 steps away from them and so I could see and hear them perfectly! Not very nice! -Thanks for listening! BTW.......the mail carriers that deliver the mail.....wonderful people! Just wonderful! I've met quite a few in Oak Park and they smile and greet people hello. I met Bonita today and what a gem she is! Such a happy and friendly person so unlike those stationed at the post office. Maybe it's the air! I know I always feel better when I get some fresh air!!! :) read more
