I visited Oak Park Post Office because it happened to be the closest to me at the time while on Dwight D. Eisenhower Expressway. After a few loops through the area, I eventually found a parking spot along N Kenilworth Ave right outside of the entrance. During my loops, I was astonished to see the beauty of downtown Oak Park which I have never seen before. I will have to visit the area one of these days to go food hopping, or maybe even pick out a run route that would take me through it on foot. Now as for parking, it is 1-hour parking, 9 AM - 5 PM Monday - Saturday. Many of the visitors I see try to secure those parking spots along N Kenilworth Ave because you will have to pay if you choose to park along Lake St, which is pay by the plate. An adorable, classy looking building is this post office not only on the outside, but inside as well. I must say that this post office was my life saver due to its closing time on the weekend which will surely result in future visits for me. During my visit, there was absolutely no line of customers inside which resulted in an in-and-out visit (no pun intended), tehehe. As someone who visits post office locations regularly whether it be for Poshmark or eBay shipments, the clerk presented a friendly vibe during our brief encounter at the counter. I was on my way in minutes after she weighed and scanned my package, as well as presented me with mailing stamps for my postcards. I am terrible at doing the surveys on the receipts pertaining to my visits at post offices, but rest assured I always share a review based on my experiences. This used to be a nice post office with friendly workers. The women (except Kiara, Jasmine, and Tanya) and the one man that work at the counter are unprofessional, rude, and unrefined (ghetto). They have attitudes, gossip, and use their personal phones while assisting customers. Expect to wait in line while they finish their personal conversation in the back office. Expect to wait in line while they finish waiting a video on their phone or finish writing a text. Expect to wait in line and listen to them bicker. Except flat affects and side eyes. Expect to feel like you're pestering them while they are assisting you. Oh..and expect the self-service kiosk to be non-functioning. Ghetto carriers... they open mail when they feel that a monetary card was sent. My prettiest cards sent from an old and very dear friend have been tainted because carriers that we should be able to trust, get very curious. thankfully my friends are smart and hand deliver gift cards and such. Such a dreadful facility. I recently bought postage costing a little under $8, gave the clerk a $20, and she started bitching, complaining about how everyone comes in and hands over "big bills" to pay, which then makes the post office run out of money in the till. Everyone in Oak Park needs to change their behavior, apparently, instead of the post office upping the amount of change they give their clerks at the beginning of the day. So stupid. Then just today, I walked in to mail an oversized envelope--that was all. There were two clerks, BOTH of whom were processing people's passport applications, which takes AGES. Again, so stupid. They clerks couldn't care less, and the growing line of people waiting to be served sure as hell didn't make them move any faster. The Oak Park branch of the USPS on Lake Street is truly and consistently awful. If I have the time, I go straight to the Forest Park branch and breeze through the experience there every single time. People who are at the service desk here deliberately close the location early It's usually around 15-30 minutes before closing. They will hound, harass, and lie to the customers to get them to leave who simply want to be served during regular business hours. Normally, I'd regard that behavior as devious, lazy, and cruel, but I think here it's worse, because these individuals are aggressive about this behavior. I think it's fair to characterize them as mentally unstable, truly. If I have no option, I go here. I've learned to ignore the people who pose as staff, paid to work, but who won't. Being courteous hasn't worked. So, I direct them to do what I want them to do and repeat it as though I'm speaking to someone who is hard of hearing. They will complain. I ask for the manager. They'll complain more. When I ask for their names, they'll ask me to give them mine first. They'll give me false names, different names, and point to the other staff to say that "that one" is the manager, which is also false. Eventually, someone who may be a manager will arrive and get done what I've needed to get done, while the individuals posing as employees take their complaints about me to the red zone. The other Oak Park location has staff who are the opposite of this crew. Go there, if you can. read more

I keep hoping service will improve so every few months I go back to this post office but today was the worst. I didn't have a choice in location today since they were holding two IRS letters so I had to go to this location. I received a "final attempt" notice taped to our door even though there was no prior attempts as far as we could tell. So I rushed to the post office 1 pm on a Saturday to claim the letters. Huge line, never a surprise. Clerks either don't notice or don't care. They move at the same slow pace and frequently walk away from their posts without even eye contact with the person next in line who trying to approach the counter. There were 3 clerks at first then one just walked off and never came back. When it was my turn I just needed to pick up 2 letters being held. The clerk asked for ID "to show my address matches". Ok, no problem. The address matched. But she was upset that my husband and my last names are different "so I can't give you the letter." And she told me to have him sign the form and tape it to our door. But I explained again it was marked "Final Attempt" so could she please just go get the letters and check to see if MY name was also on the letters since they were IRS documents and should list my name too. She agreed to go check and indeed my name was also on the letter. Great. I thanked her and signed for them. But instead of just finishing the task she maligned the delivery person and complained how they did not do their job correctly. She's mad for two reasons now. 1. Why don't our last names match? That inconveniences her. 2. Her colleague was too lazy to write both names on the form they'd taped to my door. That also inconveniences her. Never a smile. Just a list of reasons I'm making her life more difficult. She did ask at the end if I needed stamps so that was good. I did have a parcel to mail but I didn't want to inconvenience her further so I went to the automatic kiosk instead. New machine that was slow and the keys stuck but I was able to print a label. But now the bin door was jammed so even after I'd paid for my Priority Post Box there was no way to get into into the bin. I walked back to the counter and now all 3 clerks were gone. I waited again, no one returned. I knocked on the bin and called through the a lot for help. No one. At 1:30 on a Saturday in a busy post office in a town of 50,000 no one can be found to help. I went to mail a package to Alaska last week and I asked clerk No. 15 to check the Zip and she said it was good, but it still didn't feel right, so I asked again and she said it was good. But it was not. So the package went to another post office in Alaska and I had to follow the package til it got there and then called and a much kinder clerk in Barrow, Alaska, got it rerouted to the right town. I have the feeling this clerk just likes to mess with you and then go into the break room and brag about how they screwed a customer. I'm sure I'm not alone. And in every other PO I've been to the passport office is in a separate room so you don't have the kids having fits about having their photo taken while you're in line. I go into the post office and look how it's run and every time wonder why? Like Christmas time when ALLL of the outside mailboxes were so full you couldn't put even one envelope in. I had to go in and tell them they needed to be emptied. I knocked on the postmaster's door and a woman nearby said, haughtily and not pleasantly, "How may I help you?" I told her and she didn't say thank you or "I'll get that fixed " -- nothing. So I give this PO a nothingburger. read more

My package was shipped to an entire different address, even though, I put the correct address on there. No one was remorseful, she insisted my customer gave me the incorrect address when a rep from the 1-800 number located the package and said it was addressed correctly, and the clerk at the post office dropped the ball. Not to mention as of recently items were messing from another customer's package. I'm just in awe at the audacity and unprofessionalism, you can't ship a package correctly but you have time to open packages and steal. read more

When I realized there was no way to get hold of any actual person who might care about my praise for my mail carrier, I thought, I'll just tell Yelp! There should be a Yelp site for 5 star mail carriers. I hadn't seen my new carrier but I had noticed that he/she always had my mail organized. I could just reach in and grab it. I did not have to fish for anything. I get a lot of mail, and I noticed how easy it was to pick up. Letters were stacked, folded inside some magazine or large envelope, and placed vertically in the box. I never dropped any. This morning I saw the carrier. His name is Montreus Armstead. When I said I wanted to let someone know what a good job he does, it turned out he had not realized that what he was doing might be praiseworthy. "I just take the pile of letters and I fold the magazine around them," he said, demonstrating with his next batch. "You're just a really organized person." "Yeah, I guess so." I said I had his name and I was going to find someone to tell. I wanted to clarify the spelling of his last name. "Armst Ead" he said. "Like the ship?" "Yes." Passport service, proceed with caution. First of all they only service passport applications between 10 am and 3:30 pm. If you are renewing you can go at any time. You just need all the proper documentation and old passport and you mail it in with your completed form. The fee is 110$ for the passport renewal. For a new passport application you must come during the hours I mentioned. If the passport is for a minor, BOTH parents must be there. They will have you raise your right hand and swear that the information you have both provided is true. The fee is 80$ for the child passport and a 25$ fee for first time passports. The woman said the passports would take about 5 to 6 weeks and I mailed a personal check for the fees. I love OAK PARK but it seems like all Post Offices give you the run around and their favorite word is No. I'm serious. Anyway, they have nice packing supplies and greeting cards. read more

This location continues to lose 1st class packages. They are not scanned at the location. They are sent to a processing center. There is no protection for the person mailing the package when 1st class mail is lost. You have to wait in line to have your packages scanned by an employee, if you want to be assured that your packages have actually entered the system. This sounds easy, but the Lake St. location usually has long lines. I mail a lot of packages. Five packages have disappeared at this location. The employees do offer apologies. No one has actually made any effort to locate the packages. read more

First, Orlando and the young woman he often works with in the afternoon are friendly and good at their jobs. They're greatly appreciated. Second, this is a great building. Artwork and history displays are fantastic. Unfortunately, overall, this place seems badly run. They are short staffed. Other employees I have met are consistently rude. And the two different managers/supervisors I've interacted with seem to be part of the problem. On three different occasions, I've been treated disrespectfully and dismissively. I am sure that some USPS customers cause staff problems - but I'm not one one of them. So don't treat me like a hostile person! I'm one of the good guys. My home is a short distance from this post office. I often receive someone else's mail. Twice, I've had to rely on tracking data to know that a package was being held for me at the post office because no actual notice was left. Once again, the Oak Park Post Office proved why it has the lowest Yelp rating of Oak Park, Forest Park, and River Forest. Usually their demeanor towards me and other customers in there is about a two or three stars. After today I'm giving it two stars. Background information: I ordered a car booster seat for my puppy that I needed by 5:30 yesterday. The USPS got to my apartment and put one of those orange stickers on my mailbox saying "sorry they missed me", and there wasn't a secure place to put the box. The didn't do anything to let me know they were down there, put it in the Luxer locker, or check in with the office (which is what people normally do for large boxes). The USPS is the only mail delivery that does this; all the others make some effort to contact me or they put it in the locker. So my husband, my puppy, and I went to the post office to pick up the box. It was massive--too big for me to carry because I didn't have the wingspan for it. So one of the people told me to come up, honk the horn, and they would bring it out to my car. So my husband drove the car up to the door while I stayed outside with the puppy. The guy came out (carrying the box by his finger tips) and when he saw my husband, he said "You've got a guy in the car, come on!" Then he dropped our box on the ground. I told him that he had to take care of the dog. Then he barked at me that "You're preventing people from actually doing work!" My husband commented that he felt like he was in trouble for just existing. That box was big enough that even my husband would have had trouble getting it to the car with his wingspan. Maybe this guy can't imagine being short. Maybe he has never had a three month old puppy before and doesn't know that you can't leave them alone in the car for ten minutes without them destroying it. But there's no excuse for that kind of rudeness. read more

This place is the worse I went during the week, in the evening, and paid for it. The customer service is non existent, lines for the main counter went back to the other side of the hall. With no relief in sight, one would go to the ONLY self serve kiosk, which had a line back to the far wall as well. With basically another post office seven minutes drive (near Harlem and Madison) in forest park, I wonder why is this one (or even that one) still open? Oak park is trying to expand the area with more condos near an outdated and outmoded post office like this? Either revamp the place, the employees and add more kiosks or close it and clear it for more boutique shops or a cultural center. Just dont leave this post office as is. Three stars is my compromise. Kudos for architecture, blahs for convenience. My advice is to be aware that street parking can be VERY hit or miss and there is a good chance that the closest parking spot is a block away. And definitely use the automated postal machine. With the normally long lines they have, its a life saver. On the plus side, this branch has longer hours of operation than many post offices, including keeping the lobby open for the automated postal machines. The big draw for this branch is the gorgeous architecture. This was a 1930's WPA construction project. I won't fill up this review with all the juicy information. This is by far one of the busier post offices that I've visited. I recommend (if you could choose) always have Joe assist you with sending your packages. Joe, a short man usually works the front counter...always curteous, friendly, and helpful. I always try to have him help me because he helps me find the quickest and cheapest way to send my mail. The only reason why I'm rating it 3 stars is because the service line is usually packed. I think maybe on two occasions I can think of was it dead in the many times I have gone to drop off or pick up mail. Anyone who visits this post office knows the drill sergeant lady who handles passports/customers coming to mail packages. She is by far one of the least happy workers I have ever met. This place is horrible! Waiting in line 50 minutes then was told I was in wrong line with no signs guiding everyone in the right direction. Only having 2 "workers", finally made it to the counter then had a desk sign slapped in my face saying "station closed" with no care whatsoever! All the customers were shocked. This was the lady on the right hand side of counter on 11/24 at 1:20 pm cst. God bless our wonderful lazy government employees who think they are one step above us protected by the Post Master General who never even followed through with his reform plan. Think he gives a hell? This is the largest main post office in the area and we were advised they are short staffed. Yes, I'm ticked off. Terrible terrible terrible. The incompetence is astounding. Most weeks I receive a piece of mail addressed to someone else. I put on front porch and wait for carrier to choose to pick it up. Sometimes it is a few days. But this week they have topped themselves with pathetic service. I received a letter addressed to Georgia (the state!!!) from Arlington Heights, Illinois. I live in Oak Park. I brought it to main post office and asked to speak to supervisor. I was left waiting in hallway for ten minutes. Wow - looking through the reviews here, I see I am not alone. I've always found the service in recent years to be slow here. I grew up in Oak Park and used to love to go to the post office because the building was so beautiful. It still is, but in light of the cutbacks that the USPS faces, I can't see them keeping this place open, especially with the attitude of the staff there. You'd think that would be a motivator to these people to get with it, but it's not. I had brought a package there for my mom - she was returning something that she didn't want back to a mail order place. The box needed to be taped a bit - nothing major, maybe a foot and a half of packing tape to ensure it was wrapped. Well, I had the "luck" of having to go to the "cranky old African-American" (as he seems to often be referred to!) man's window. I explained my predicament and he just looked and said, "well you have to buy some tape." Mind you, there wasn't even any tape to purchase that was visible at their supply stands. But there was plenty sitting there for use next to the old crab. I looked at him and said, "well, I'm going to have to drive back home then." He could have cared less. If you read it by the "letter of the law", he was right - the USPS shouldn't be expected to wrap everyone's package who steps to their window. But there were two ways around this. He could've provided customer service and did it anyway. Or, he could have said, well, I can tape it for you, but I'll have to charge you 50 cents (a fair, nominal figure that I just put out there) to do it. Then it saves me a trip home, or using mom's fixed income dollars for more packing tape than she needs. It also keeps the PO's costs down, while providing customer service. Apparently, that's too much work for the crabby dude. When I was telling my brother about my experience, he even knew about the guy. It's a shame this guy has a job when there are so many people that are out of work who could fill his shoes and do ten times better by barely lifting a finger. What a waste. How did this end? I decided to go about a mile down the road to the River Forest Post Office. Now their building is newer, but not nearly as nice... however, they have employees who are HELPFUL. And even though they did have packing tape for sale, the clerk there offered to tape my package for me and was more than helpful in getting it sent out. And I bet he gets up every morning loving life and looking forward to going to work. USPS - as much as I love the Lake Street facility in Oak Park, when it's time to make your cuts, either close it or move the RF employees to it and get rid of the miserable people that staff the desk in Oak Park. Go to the River Forest Post Office if you actually need to talk to a real live person. The people at the Oak Park Post Office are phoning it in. Yes... the building is a grand example of WPA art and architecture. It has that imposing deco-federal look... and tons of what I suspect is real and composite marble and granite. Beautiful murals. What it doesn't have... is a competent postal staff. It's slow. Many of the people there really need to be asked to retire. They don't care that you have a package to send. That you have a question about international shipping. All they care about is letting you know how much they dislike their jobs in customer service. Maybe their supervisors are to terrified of their attitudes in the wake of the recent lift of the gun ban? That's the only reason why I'd employ many of the people who works there... if I was afraid that if I fired them... they'd come back with an automatic. Any positive reviews are probably from the friends and family of people who work there and are trying to keep their jobs. In contrast... the actual mail carriers in Oak Park have always been wonderful. read more

The building is enormous, and yet the service counter is disproportionately tiny. There's a dedicated line for passport, and at most two other windows are open for regular postal services. Oak Park's population is five times that of River Forest, and that translates to long wait. In contrast, the Post Office in River Forest, albeit its smaller physical size, provides a much better, faster service. Parking here is okay. There's street (15-minute and metered) and garages nearby (free for first two hours), tho' street parking could be hard to find during busy hours. Afterall it's Oak Park. Hey Yelp!, You need a zero star choice. If the Oak Park PO is the fourth ring of hell, then it's passport line is surely the sixth. Standing in line watching Vickie process applications is like watching the proverbial paint dry. It took her over an hour to process two applications; I timed it. She pored over the applications like she was manning Checkpoint Charlie at the height of the cold war. The only thing she gave more attention was her gum which she lazily worked over while administering her pain. All the while her countermates sit mostly idle observing the torture. Generally when I'm here I can't help but feel negativity when waiting in line or dread while approaching the building because I'll be here for 20 minutes. It's a beautiful building but that's about it. Eddie needs an attitude adjustment, Lorraine has good days (last two times) and bad, but I do wish they could clone Orlando and distribute him around the building. He works efficiently and with a smile on his face. I'm gone to the USPS in Forest Park on William twice in the last week and had very smooth transactions. I had struck up a relationship with the folks at the UPS store, just west of the post office and would probably still be with them if the service was as it had been... The customer service here is really bad. I feel terrible for the only two helpful nice workers, orlando and another female that is always working the desk late in the day. However, I print labels through ebay and then drop the packages off at the post office. This is the second time I have dropped off a package with 2 day priority and almost a week later, there is still no tracking information, meaning...it doesn't even appear that it has left the post office! Another package I dropped off the day after has already been delivered to it's destination and they were the same weight and type of shipping. So this time, I called and was told there is nothing they can do and to just check back tomorrow. PATHETIC. I called back again the next day and thankfully the person I talked to this time said she would take my name and number and keep track of any changes or new information and let me know. It has been 7 days since I shipped a 2 day priority package...and no tracking information available. At least she understood my concern. read more

Much to the resistance of the clerk who answered the phone at the sort facility who actually YELLED at me twice. You'd think she would be cheerful she has a good job, no way. Five stars for our Post Master OP/FP. Zero stars for the uncontrollable clerk who shouldn't be working for the USPS, and certainly should not be speaking to customers. I've taken guests there to see it and everyone agrees that it's impressive. The clerk is nearly always busy. Like other post offices, there are usually only one or two employees staffing the counter; however, this office almost always has a long line. I'm undecided if it's because they're slow/unorganized or just busy. The length of time it takes them to retrieve my packages would indicate unorganized; but the people who don't have their outgoing parcels together ahead of time would place some blame on patrons. One important note is that I applied for my passport here. It was a long wait to see a passport rep and then to have my picture taken, but I was prepared for all of that. What bothered me was when they lost my only original birth-certificate and didn't tell me. The passport people were professional enough to pay for me to get copies and apply again, but it was a nuisance. What's strange is that I still prefer this post office over any other. I really think it's the magnificence of building. If I could use the self-service machine for my tasks, I would. For no merit of the underbelly workings and staff, I like this place. read more
