I recently visited this location to pack and ship a package, and unfortunately, my interaction with Norma was disappointing. When I approached her counter, I let her know I needed assistance packing and shipping my item. She began explaining something about the tape and packaging, but her explanation was unclear. When I later realized the box already had adhesive built-in (which is a great feature I hadn't noticed), I responded with surprise and appreciation. Instead of responding in a helpful or friendly way, Norma replied with a snide comment: "Was what I said not clear enough?" Additionally, when she needed to inspect the package, she said "hand me the package" in a curt tone, even though it was already sitting on the counter in front of her. Her demeanor throughout the interaction came off as impatient and dismissive, which left me feeling uncomfortable. I understand that customer service roles can be challenging, but it wasn't a busy time-- there wasn't a long line and only one person in back of me. A little patience and kindness go a long way--especially in a public-facing position. I hope this feedback can be used constructively to improve future interactions. read more

The WORST customer service. I had an appointment for passport service. Appt was 3:45-4:00- arrived at 3:40 got into the line and got to the lady at 3:50- she states I missed the appt I'm late- I provide her the confirmation and she states well there's only 10 minutes left and we stop at 4. Very very Poor Customer Service! One of the worst I've been when it comes to dealing with public. Ladies working the counter are not friendly or helpful at all. If you want to mail a package or have questions this one is not the place to go. I've always clicknship packages and usps has always provided printed labels for me through my email or in person. But the lady snarked when I ask about it and said why would we even do that very rudely, and said you need to hand write the address and tape your package. I ask about tape and she said well we sell it you can buy a roll. saying you need to be more prepared and step out of line and take care of that. First and last experience there. Online option said " we're sorry we cannot proceed with your request because the system is having technical difficulties" also has been saying that for 3 days! I had a really great experience with this post office! A Groupon order went to my old address in Monterey. I tried for weeks to get the order redirected to my current address. Groupon did nothing; the vendor did nothing. BUT, the Monterey postal service went to my old address and retrieved the package from the current resident!! They let me know that they had the package. This post office needs definite change within the administration system. I feel sorry that I need to write this review, but I don't have a choice. This is my way to, hopefully, help improve their service. I have had great experiences as a customer over many years with the employees helping customers in the front. I received the notification that a package arrived at the post office, I went the same day to retrieve it. I had the tracking # but the employees could not find it so one of them asked me for my phone # and said that the supervisor would call me the same day or the next day. Two days went by and no one called me. I went to the post office again, waited for 1 hour for the supervisor to be told that she has left for the day. I left work early the next day, and went again; waited for 40 minutes until an employee who is in "charge" of the packages in the back, told me that the package was lost. Today, 6 days after the package arrived to Harnell St. Post Office and 5 trips to talk to the supervisor and over 20 phone calls (no one ever answers the phone), "they are short of personnel" according to one person there; and all the rudeness and suggestions "that I had picked up the package already" The person in charge of the packages in the back, called me to tell me that a customer had the large locker's key in her mail box and returned to the front desk because the package did not belong to her. My suggestion the first day I went to pick-up my package was that it could be inside one of the large lockers, but I was told that it was impossible because my name was not in the "list" for the lockers. I had 2 incidents before with misplaced packages in the same post office. read more

These were the rudest, laziest people I've ever encountered and I'm never going back. It wasn't a busy time and there weren't many people there at all. More than an hour before closing time. I was told to go to the end of the counter where no one was there to help, so I waited for a while.. maybe they're busy? Decided they weren't when they were all casually talking going back and forth to the back and ignoring me looking at them as the only customer in the building, so I went to the lady at her register. She didn't answer my question, she didn't offer a suggestion to help me, and she made me feel like a complete idiot. She said she'd get someone to help me and walkie talkied someone who happened to walk up while she was trying to contact the other lady. They greeted each other, ignored me, and continued to help another person who walked in and was in line behind me.... I was so humiliated I wanted to cry with my 3 packages, 9-month pregnant belly, and hormones. So I just left with all my stuff and went to a UPS the next day where I wasn't treated like a dumbass. read more

Usually these folks are very nice, polite and helpful and today, all went to hell in a hand basket. I tried to speak with a supervisor, again, on a very serious problem on behalf of my Rotary club and it was like "who's on first" with a very mean and sarcastic edge on the part of 3 separate workers. I have no idea and honestly, I was on my best behavior because I really, really need their help at an upper level of service. And there in lies the rub...How does one get to a supervisor, when "Danny" is called on three separate occasions and never comes out of the back to see who needs his help.and this is after 40 minutes of my patient waiting. I was first pointed to "Danny" who turned out to be "Manny" yes, he even shoved his name tag at me when I inquired and when I asked if that was "Danny" who just walk by, leaving the window where I was told to wait by Manny, he replies " I don't know, I don't look out of the back of my head." I understand that "public servant" and "customer service" have sadly become oxymorons; however, being rude and sarcastic at any level of the government, whose salary we pay and pay for dearly, is unacceptable behavior and needs to be addressed, mentored and monitored a the highest level of local management, Granted, it is a service where you can't exactly go next door; however, this may explain why their business is so depressed from before: Folks are finding more user-friendly and helpful alternatives. Why am I ranting here? Because short of being a friend of the Postmaster General, I don't know how one voices a concern with the postal department and I believe these folks' boss needs to be aware of the public persona his/her employees are displaying and how rude and inept they present. Again, this was a first and maybe these folks are on loan. Hard to boycott the post office and honestly, our carriers are some of the finest and friendliest folks I have met in Monterey. But if you so dislike the public and helping them solve serious problems for volunteer agencies that work to help aid our community and our world at large, maybe you need to be working in the back, where Danny seems to be hiding from his frequent pages delivered by a female clerk who seemed ready to tear my head off just for politely asking if he was available. If anyone knows how I might file a formal report of this treatment where it will have any real impact, please let me know. This is a good, but not great, post office. On the plus side, they have the most windows around, and are normally fully-, or nearly-fully-, staffed. On the other hand, it's often crowded, but the large number of clerks means that the lines usually move pretty smoothly. They also have passport services in a separate part of the building, accessed from a different entrance, so that reduces crowding in the atrium. The downsides? Well, for one, the drive-past mailboxes outside are on the curb, making it well-nigh impossible for the driver of a car to reach from inside the car. For another, parking is a bear. Most drivers will stop for postal patrons using the crosswalks, but far too many customers try to cut across Hartnell, which is both inconsiderate and dangerous. But the worst part of this post office is one particular clerk. I don't recall his name, but he looks like an ad for Jheri Curl. His fingernails are long, his uniform dirty--but it's his attitude that takes the cake. He made me want to go postal! Avoid him if you can! read more

Things I'd rather do than visit this post office again: Visit the DMV for a week straight sans appointment. Have a root canal. Do taxes for hundreds of people. Take a whale watching tour, jump overboard and live inside a whale. Every. Single. Time. I call I get placed on hold for no less than 10 mins. Once I called and by minute 7 I walked to the post office and stood there watching them ignore my call and have zero customers. Why was I on hold? Too early for ya to work? I've had passport appointments canceled on me the day of, I've been given zero courtesy or ease to reschedule, I've tried four times to get a passport. It's absurd. I've ended up going to Pacific Grove and I was on hold for all of two minutes, the lady was VERY nice and knowledgeable about my request. I was well taken care of. It's sad I have to commute to my post office of choice, and not use the one within walking distance of my home because the interaction with some of the staff raises my blood pressure to the point of rage. It's a friggin post office. It's not hard. Answer phones, process requests, don't be rude (I'm not even asking for a smile heaven knows that's too much), repeat. read more

I have to say that I had a bad experience at the post office today. I went there to send a small package to China. After comparing the price I decided to send the priority express mail. The lady at the counter told me that she can not find the city in the computer system according to the zip code I wrote. I felt strange because I've been using this zip code multiple times to send packages home and each time it worked perfectly fine. But given that the express mail may require the exact code, I immediately looked up the zip code on my phone and suggested that she try the zip code on the top of the list. This zip code showed in the system and enabled her to enter the next step. As the process went on, she got more and more impatient with me. She was first stressed by the fact that I did not put in the "province/state" on the custom form. I explained to her that my city is at the province level so there is no province to fill in. I suggested that she try to see if she can find my city on the list of provinces and she found it. Then she got pissed off by the fact that she couldn't find the city in the list. I managed to help her find the district on the list. I know that foreign city systems can be confusing, so I kept explaining to her and tried to help her get through. Finally she got stuck on another blank asking for zip code, she then refused to try one on the suggested list, saying that I should go figure out the correct zip code and that she has a long line waiting. I asked if I can switch to priority mail to avoid this problem, the lady seemed quite impatient and told me that no matter what, my zip code would not work. As the result, I had to leave the counter and search for the "correct" zip code. After finding a third zip code (there are just so many zip codes popping up for that area), I went to a second clerk, this time the lady was not able to find the city, but she told me that it is maybe because the express mail does not deliver to that area. She asked me to confirm that I still want to send it even if there's no guarantee and the package may be returned. I had no choice but said yes. The clerk probably thought that it is too risky and costly, so she told me that I can send regular mail (first class mail) instead. Finally after filling out the form again I went to a third clerk. This time the lady was friendly and helpful. She suggested that I could send priority mail instead of first class, and there was no issue with the zip code or anything after switching to the priority mail. The whole process took me about one hour and I was quite confused and frustrated. I understand that express mail may need exact zip code, but the clerk in the first counter neither offered any possible explanations as why my zip code did not work this time nor suggested me send the priority mail instead. She kept accusing me for not providing a zip code that matches her system. Well my lesson is that never send express mail to a foreign country unless you get a zip code approved by the post office clerk. Otherwise, you will be ashamed for not knowing the correct answer. read more

I had such a great experience at this post office today, I just had to write a review! Rachel autographed her work with excellence! I had three heavy packages and she went over and beyond helping me with getting it to where it needs to go for a reasonable price! She was absolutely wonderful and extremely kind and fun! I also needed help for a separate matter from Denni. He too autographed his work with excellence! He immediately took action and helped resolve the mystery! In fact, when I think about it, every person who has ever helped me at this post office has been very kind and helpful. Sure, I timed my trip to this post office to maximize the potential of few other folks being there (I aimed for soon after 10am), so it looked like my plan was coming together when I parked right outside the door amid an ocean of free 12 minute zone parking - I was a little scared before going in though, wondering if 12 minutes would be enough. However, once inside, over half the counter positions had people working at them, there was no line and one counter position was free - I walked up and handed over my slip of paper for the insured packaged I was picking up. I had to show id (sure, makes sense), sign my name on the electronic pad (makes sense too), print my name on the pad (hmmm) and print my address on the pad (wtf - doesn't my id cover that??) - but all in all was in and out within 2 minutes, giving me 10 minutes of parking to spare! After living in town for the best part of four years, this was indeed my first time visiting this post office - and compared with previous PO visits in other places I've lived, this location puts the others to shame. In fact, I was far from PO'd by the experience (yes, I did just type that). read more

I thought I've seen that advertised a million times over the past 10 years. The parking thing, well, I like to think of it as an adventure. Either park at the library and walk over and enjoy the library as well as a post office visit. Or park at Trader Joes if you can find a spot and pick up groceries and do your post office business. My first interaction with this post office was when I made a phone call and needed some questions answered and clarification and the male associate was very helpful and friendly. I made an online appt. for passport and it was quick and easy. When I arrived to the post office, it was very busy. A gentleman with the name tape Roel was friendly. However, Rachael (sorry if I misspelled your name) was awesome! She was so helpful and informative and had me worry free. I have to come back to take care of some stuff and I hope I get Rachael again help me. I see that the opinions on this post office are divided but I just want to say that his place has mostly supremely nice staff (except for one lady, she can be quite intimidating and hard to talk to). I think the reviews depend on the staff they meet that day and on their own emotions but I went there today in a good mood. I didn't know which box to choose to ship my items. One of the post office staff helped me out by showing me the options (he went to where I was to restock but immediately helped when I asked him a question). I was very impressed because its not the first time that Mr. Ruiz has helped me with my problems over which options to choose. He's very nice and patient and I appreciate that kind of attitude! So, I like the atmosphere and I like the service. Mornings at around 10am are the best and usually have smaller lines, so choose the times you're going to go there carefully because the staff have to help other people and that does take time. I think some people on here whine unnecessarily when it comes to lines. As for parking, downtown Monterey doesn't have a lot of space to begin with, so the parking is not bad and I always find space if I come at the best time. If not, then like others suggested, park somewhere else and walk back. read more
