Do NOT use USPS. If you are like me and are new to NY, then you probably didn't know they are the worst in the whole country. I had no problems in CA. They have failed 90% of the time to delivery my package. Either it says they tried to deliver but no one was home, or they said it was delivered even though I clearly didn't get it. And that is bull****! Either my bf or I were home every single time it was "delivered" and never did the postman ring the doorbell. So obviously I know they are lying. And when I go to this location to ask for the package, the lady makes such a huuuuge effort to look for it in the back for a whole 30 sec before giving up and saying "it's not here." Right. Once a package was even returned to the original sender after a month when it "failed to deliver" even though it said it was "delivered." This service is just nasty. NEVER have I had a problem with UPS or Fedex so I know it's not a theft problem. It's a USPS problem. If you can avoid it, DONT use USPS for your own sake. read more

Here's the thing, I've been alive long enough to know that USPS is a disgrace and complaints ALWAYS fall on deaf ears but yelpers here aren't kidding ....this place is the absolute worse. They don't even try to exercise good customer service when something is their own fault. They take pride in their incompetence. As one employee (young black girl) responded today when I told her that they've got only two stars in review engines online, "that's fine". No, it's not fine! In closing I frequently observed this institution's clients asking themselves if the workers therein were human. I would like to clear up this matter once and for all: they're NOT. I'm a pretty patient person, and appreciative when somebody takes the time to clearly explain something to me, except when it's the wrong information and causes my ebay customer to start shouting at me about why she doesn't have her package yet (b/c the post office has clearly lost it). It's called a "tracking" number so one can track it. I think it was the insanely rude woman everybody is talking about--she rolled her eyes at me when i asked which window to put my oversized package in. But all you postal haters are going to LOVE this one, it takes the cake with a cherry on top. Shortly after 9/11, I called the post office to ask how one reports a person deceased and thus cancels their mail, b/c my father had died the year prior and I was still getting his mail, most of it junk. The guy on the phone (at Wburg branch, the worst imo) tells me no problem he'll take care of it. I'm like, I am talking about reporting a person DECEASED, gone, forever, no more mail ever. He's says, yeah, I'll let your mail carrier know. Well, guess what: For two weeks, the post office returned all of MY mail marked DECEASED. I was wondering why I wasn't getting any mail so I called, and I also found out that proper procedure is you have to have power of attorney not a freaking phone call to some dude behind the counter. I called the main customer "service" number to file a complaint, and the woman actually said to me, well what do you expect US to do about it? !!!!!! Unfortunately, nobody who works at the post office probably knows what yelp is nor do they give a shit. about anything apparently. i have had shitty shitty jobs in my life and it does suck to have people complaining all the time at you but if you did your mother f*ing job, maybe people would be nicer. read more

My advice: Please be patient, courteous and respectful. If you enter the post office with a good attitude then you'll have a pleasant experience. If you walk in to the post office in a hurry, annoyed, impatient or irritated then you'll have a bad experience. Remember, you are not the center of the universe. Don't get annoyed. Stay Calm. You are not entitled to have a five star experience at the post office, you may have unrealistic expectations. Please say Thank you, be sincere. Don't be rude, control your anger. Be friendly. Every time I've come here, either there's been no line, or the staff has made a concerted effort to help everyone as efficiently as possible. Always a pleasant experience with knowledgeable, friendly service. I don't think I've ever waited here to pick up or mail a package for more than 15 minutes, max. I'm so confused. I got a package slip on Sunday, 12/4. Since when did the USPS deliver on Sunday? I get the slip on a Sunday, but this local office is "closed" on Sunday so I can't pick up my package. Then of course they are only open M-F until 5:00 PM so I can't even get there after work. I tried to call the office direct line to get some clarity and it was busy, and busy, and busy some more. Why do they make it so hard to get your mail? I mailed a bunch of invitations within the US. Not sure what happened to the invitations at the post office, but many people did not receive the invitations until two weeks later. (The invitations were cancelled at the post office on April 21 and were not received until May 3, 4, . . . (and some still haven't been received). Fortunately I had mailed out far in advance, but was concerned when I heard, at first, that people were not receiving the invitations. This post office itself is the last place you want to go. The workers are rude and unhelpful. I once saw a man use the self help, make an error, and then be refused a refund, because apparently they cannot refund anything done at the the self help station. I've lived in a few places around the country, and the post office was always a pleasant experience, until I moved to Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Completely unhelpful, rude, inconsiderate, inefficient, snobby, dirty, and just plain horrendous. The staff is incredibly illegitimate, and barely speaks any english. The line is always at least a half hour wait, even if there are only three people ahead of you, and trust me, its never their fault. I have lost a couple packages, including an expensive camera I sent through them to a repair center. I had a tracking number and it was wiped off the map when I checked its status. They said there is nothing they can do and refused to assist me further. I am usually a very accomodating person, but this just set me over the edge. If it was legal I would burn this place down with thermite and napalm. I really hope the employee's would take the time to read these reviews and look into whatever they have left of their hearts to change their ways. read more

I cannot think of anything more stressful than my near weekly trip to the post office to retrieve my 'undeliverable' packages. Please not I am also an intensive care nurse for reference to the stress I can tolerate. If there was a way to give a negative number of stars I would do it but as it stands the lowest I can give is one. How the US Postal Service remains in business is beyond disbelief. No business with this shameful level of customer service with a delivery status for packages as poor as it is would be closed a long time ago. The lines are not measured in minutes. Your only hope of getting served is that the customers ahead of you get so frustrated with waiting that they leave. Once you do get to a window you are treated worse than a criminal. Getting packages at home? Forget it. I get packages from fedex and UPS often and NEVER have to go somewhere to retrieve my package. With the USPS not only do you not get your packages you get no notice of any attempt for delivery. The only way I know a package is waiting for me is because the business I ordered it from contacts me. Management is indeifferent or downright rude to your concerns or complaints. How a class action lawsuit has not been filed it beyond me. If I could specify delivery options I would always choose fedex or UPS and for your own sanity so would you. As I stand here waiting every customer that gets to the window leaves in disgust. USPS you should be ashamed and postal employees consider yourself lucky you have a job. Sending a letter or a package to a loved one? Not from this zip code. I'm convinced their inbox is a giant incinerator. But I digress ...the one star is for a shite experience I had there. Needed to send a package before work, so I showed up at nine a.m. when it opens. Five or six employees were hanging out behind the counter, joking around and not doing much, so I thought, great, my timing is perfect, I'll be in and out in a couple of minutes. Except ...no. Nobody would talk to me, nobody would even look at me. I knocked at the window a few times, then banged and called, but they just kept up the early morning party, probably collecting good pay the entire time. After a few minutes I left, and upon exiting met the one human employee in the entire office, who told me kindly that though the lobby was open, the window doesn't open for another hour. I'm sure they are too stupid to know how to service their incinerator, and I'm waiting for the day the whole place goes up in flames. read more

Everyone I've seen have a problem with them was the cause of the problem. If you're a long time New Yorker you will be surprised by just how small -- downright small-town quaint really -- this USPS is, tucked into a corner halfway down a forgotten side-street. No giant Grecian columns or mammoth sheets of marble lining the walls here. This is more like a little ramshackle post office from the 1950s in rural Vermont. Only three windows in total. So lines can build up quite quickly. And due to the size of the place -- about half the size of a small studio apt if they're lucky, there isn't much room for a line of too much substance before people have to start waiting in line OUTSIDE. This may easily become quite insufferable during the colder busier days near the holidays one would guess. But the good news is that it doesn't seem to be very well known about. So it's usually pretty bare in terms of crowds. Or lack of crowds to be precise. Another aspect of the place is the down-homey atmosphere inside which is shared by the staff. I've had the misfortune of having to use this post office several times (I only say misfortune because let's face it, going to any post office in the United States -- being government owned and operated -- is never a pleasant experience, but every visit so far has left me exiting the tiny building satisfied with the service and content with how nice the staff is. These are not your typical snippy snappy and unhappy postal employees. They're as nice as one can be working behind a giant wall of plexiglass, waiting on the fast-talking, always in a hurry and entitled acting average New Yorker. So the service is surprisingly good and above par for sure. In terms of amenities, they've got the bare minimum. But nothing glaringly missing. They've even got a copy machine and offer some PO boxes. Of possible interest: The post office is right next door to the police station. If that is a concern. Their hours of operation are extremely limited. Literally a 9 to 5 type set up, perhaps still believing it's 1945 or something. So if you work a regular job, you're out of luck trying to use this post office. But they are open on saturdays. Nice friendly helpful staff. read more

The worst. I've had to deal with this place for 6 years now. Total chaos every time you go in. They purposefully leave their phone off the hook so you can't ever call, you have to go in and wait in a 30 minute line to ask about a lost package. And that's always. Packages never actually make it to me despite being "delivered," most recently wedding gifts which is what has me finally writing a review. My mailman told me that there have been a lot of problems with missing or falsely delivered packages and he thinks it's due to the "hired freelancers who don't know what they are doing." read more

the other day I was searching for the address of a post office nearby and came across all of these horrible yelp reviews for this post office. I immediately started dreading going to the post office to buy stamps, and started putting it off. When I eventually did go it was a Saturday afternoon about 15 minutes before closing time. There was a huge line, so I just used the machine to buy stamps, which took no time at all. Then I realized I needed to buy a cushioned envelope and so I got in line to wait. After reading so many horrible reviews I was expecting to be in line forever, but it moved So quickly! There were three windows open and I think there were two additional workers helping people do package pickups. When i got to the front of the line the woman helping me was really friendly and really quick. I think that there are just bad reviews on here because, honestly, who would write up a positive review for a post office under normal circumstances? The only reason I'm doing it is to try to set the story straight! Anyway, don't dread going to this post office like I did- it was totally fine and normal. Of course, no red carpet or anything, but as long as you have normal post office expectations (yes, there will be a line) you won't be disappointed. read more

My rating is purely for the clerks at this post office. About the post office in general, I have a lot of the same complaints as others. Why didn't my package ever arrive? Why can't you find it? Why can't you deliver it? Why did you send it back? I'll never use you again..Oh, I have no choice. I really don't want the post office to go away, I just want it to be better. The people working at this post office deserve a lot of credit because they have consistently been polite and helpful. Even in the middle of the summer when the line is long and the heat is high, they stay pretty cool. I appreciate them more after the awful experience I had on Lorimer Street. I went in to the post office on Friday with two of my packages and while I was taping them up, I heard two different clerks patiently talking customers through all of their options while they were trying to send their packages. The London Terrace post office on 10th ave in Chelsea takes the cake for the rudest employees (personal/inane cell phone calls while there is a line & I'm standing in front of the window already, uncalled for lectures by postal workers that came down to making personal insults against me). That said, the lines here are often very long (too long) & I wouldn't call any of the employees cheerful or pleasant, save one... the Asian woman that most often runs the package pick-up window. There is a woman who works here who has got to be the friendliest customer services person, let along post office employee, I have ever met. Time and again I see her and she is always as bubbly and sweet and helpful as ever. And while you wait online and watch her interact with everyone else in front of you, you see how much her kindness affects everyone she speaks with. Service depends on who helps you, I've had some great experiences and some terrible ones. But keep in mind the postal service as a whole is dysfunctional. It's not necessarily the fault of the people you interact with, but the system as a whole.
